    FFRC PLEX VALVES UPDATE The creators of Plex Valves sold the FFRC business. We picked up new Plex Valves for our latest DR650s and unfortunately they just don't seem to work they way they used to as the new owners have tweaked them. The forks are quite harsh and lost all the 'plushness'.
    We tried 2.5W fork oil with no success. I took them back to FFRC for adjustment but they was a small improvement but still harsh on bumps. I eventually just swapped to a a pair of RMX250 forks.
    It might be worth trying the Intiminators or Cogent DDC in the USA or DXF Parts in Australia in the meantime. It seems FFRC has changed yet again to new owners...

      How do these compare to the Cogent or Ricor mods on procycle.us ? Any Idea?

    • @crosstrainingadventure
      @crosstrainingadventure  3 года назад +2

      I haven't seen a direct comparison, Rob. But I do know there was exhaustive testing on a $30,000 suspension dyno to get them just right. And there's no need to do any extra work, just drop them in. The old intimanators required taking the forks apart and modifying them. The latest versions still need heavier fork oil to make them work properly... but the FFRC Plex valves are designed to work with the stock fork oil.

      I haven't done much to the forks just springs the bike is like about 250 kgs loaded up so it doesn't deflect easily and l replaced the rear shock with a Elka complete shock with external preload adjustment it works very well and high and low speed compression on the fly adjustment is very handy the external preload adjustment lost its hydraulic pressure but l can still adjust it with tools it's done over twenty thousand ks and hasn't missed a beat worth every cent of 1100 hundred dollars it cost (cape York,Tanami,gt central D, Simpson , golf country etc )

    Sam at FFRC was so much help.
    Purchased plex valve and springs for my weight and riding.
    Sam talked me through what he recommended. He Got the shock sorted.
    (Spring,plex valve) for me ridiculously quickly.
    I did a full rebuild on the fork including plex valves and heavier springs,seals and bushings
    All back on the bike and took it for a spirited lap through a local fire trail today......
    Transformed.
    Different bike,cannot believe the difference it has made.
    Thank you for recommending FFRC

    I just got on a DR650 off road for the first time in Texas, and yeah they left much to be desired! Still... the power and feel of the DR was addictive, even with most things stock! I think I'll be doing a DR 650 project within the next year, and try to copy everything you've done to yours... then I'll see if I can finally wheelie like you! Also, the drone shots are fantastic!

    Talking about timing. Wow! I have not watched one of these in weeks and typed in "Adventure oz" to see if there were any DR650 related clips I had missed.
    Suspension is the last thing neglected on my bike, but it has not seen real rough off-road yet just two track and gravel roads.
    I'm about done modding the DR, mostly just ergonomics, carb mods, hand guards and a larger fuel tank at this point.
    And I want to thank you guys for the epic BST magic tricks. After 3 iterations, the shortened and tapered stock needle works like dark-magic. My ass says its 20% more power, though its likely 3hp, the throttle response and over all change in power delivery is astounding! There will be no pumper carb on this bike. :)

      Justin J G'day Justin. I just installed the procycle jet kit a few days ago. I have a staintune exhaust so I put in the 155 main, drilled the second hole in the slide, put in the new needle and air fuel mixture screw. I didn't follow the instructions for the airbox mod, instead I drilled a 2 inch circle (51 mill) as per the adventure Oz video. Mate what a difference! Stock gearing and in first it just throws the front wheel in the air so bloody fast I almost flipped it because I wasn't expecting such a difference! I honestly couldn't be happier! Why anyone would spend the extra coin on a pumper carb I'll never know. It runs smooth and without any flat spots.

    I've been two routes with DR650 suspension. One DR I had used a DRZ250 front fork (fits right in but uses smaller front disc and DRZ400 rear shock which required machining on the bottom fit the DR650. This was an okay set up but my second set up was excellent. A KTM WP front fork and triple clamp (same size steering bearings but needs a spacer) and a re-valved and sprung mid 90's KTM rear Ohlins shock (Cost about $150 US plus 400AUD for the Ohlins servicing). This set up also required a KTM front axle and wheel which adds to the costs. If I went another DR I'd go similar mods as described on the video to keep costs and modifications to a minimum. The DR requires KTM money to make it into a KTM.

      it's fun messing around with forks if you like tinkering, hey bing O? i messed around with some old RM250 on a DR650 a few years ago but it is a fair bit of messing around. otherwise i'd say these plex valves look like a good value option.... which could even be sold separate to the bike if you really wanted to get most of your money back. same with intiminators too although you'd probably change the fork oil back to 5w.

      @crosstrainingadventure  8 лет назад +3

      i think the stock DR suspension is adequate for plodding around the streets but the moment you push it hard or get into a panic situation it can turn nasty, especially with the front diving under brakes. the bit of road riding i've done it still has the plush feel of the stock setup at normal speeds but is way better when braking hard or riding aggressively.

    edit:
    plex valves will NOT fit on pre 1996 DRs.
    Pay attention to this - I did not; read below... ;-)
    my advice before ordering plex valves:
    Disassemble your fork tubes and check out if the inner diameter decreases.
    The plex valves are meant to be insert all the way down inside the fork tubes.
    I run a DR650 SP42B from 1990 and unfortunatly the inner diamerter of the fork tubes decreases after 2cm by a few millimeters - plex valves stuck on the top of the fork tube instead of making all the way down.
    Check out if there is such a transition in inner diameter at your fork tubes - very likely Suzuki has modified the forks over the years of DR production.
    Despite the non-fitting plex valves on my DR - much appreciate to this channel; love your videos due they are a great help to me as a rookie.
    all the best!

    Okay blokes, I had the plex valves pre ordered before the production version were ready for sale. FFRC sent them to me as soon as they were able so I've had them in for a couple or so months now. Stock springs, stock oil and plex valves inserted. Goes for ride and f&ck me!!! Fellas, just buy them! I'm 110 kg's (fat) with a 20 litre Acerbis tank fitted. I consider myself an average experienced rider and unless you are more like the bloke riding in this video, I don't think any of us DR650 riders need heavier fork springs, so try just the Plex valves first. Seriously just order yourself a set cause the bike handles so much better on road especially during braking and offroad it's the bees knees! Just do the mod you won't regret it I guarantee! 😊

      ADVENTURE OZ Yes it's an awesome upgrade alright! It's very true what you said about them being plush over the small stuff. The first thing I noticed when riding down the dirt road that I live on, was where have the corrugations gone? Then under braking, ahhh, suddenly I felt some confidence flow through me! 😂 Then I noticed that the bike just sits flatter for want of a better way of putting it especially during gear changes. Then to some harder dirt tracks and off the track even, the forks now give me a much smoother/plusher ride to the point where I noticed my speeds are much higher now on the same tracks. My rear shock is still stock but the massively improved forks have somehow made the rear feel better. Is that even possible? Anyhow I couldn't be happier with the Plex valves and to anyone who reads this just buy them! Cheers!

      Salutations d'Australie aussi, Cudi! The soft part of the stock dual rate springs is too long, and the width of the Plex valves helps to reduce this. I don't know if this would have much effect on progressive springs... it would compress the softer part to some extent.

      just found the link frogzie.... goo.gl/ftLRHC i think their earlier jumps were stock springs and it was bottoming out a fair bit on the big 50 footer. then they went single rate and a bit stiffer.... but only because they were riding the poor bushpig so hard. as far as i know FFRC will be mailing the PLEX valves worldwide. for rear shocks, just mail it up to them i guess. or you can order the valve/piston to put in yourself maybe?

      from what i've seen their suspension costing is similar to everyone else, but the big advantage is that dyno and their design and manufacturing background - these guys make custom suspension parts for the rest of the suspension tuners here in australia and even some overseas. the PLEX valves are more complex than emulators and intiminators but will probably cost about the same... around US$185 or so.

    Awesome video as usual.
    I am thinking back to your Advrider thread "myth of the lightweight adventure bike" in terms of what you were trying to accomplish with this DR650.
    The obvious choice seemed like the 690, but I remember you weren't a fan based on the narrow gearbox and other factors. Your main point about the Drz400E as a platform was also the narrow gearbox.
    May I ask why you decided to start with the DR650 instead of the Drz400 given that the Drz400 would only potentially require wide ratio gears and perhaps a bore bump and 15T CS sprocket to get it to a similar level as the DR650?
    Is your DR650 now roughly comparable to a 690 in terms of usability?

    • @crosstrainingadventure
      @crosstrainingadventure  8 лет назад +3

      for some reason i'm not fussed on the DRZ but it would be a very suitable candidate for many riders. i hate ktm 690s with a passion so wouldn't be the person to ask about a comparison. :D

    just watching this video , and as the proud owner of a dr650 2019 model , i can honestly say that if this is the type of riding you are going to do ,then the dr is not the bike for you , spend a little more money and get a ktm .. to get the dr up there were it needs to be . you need to change the suspension , tyers , carby jetting , breathing in and out , front and rear sprockets , and that seat is a ball breaker . .iv put an american made after market sargent seat on my dr .. that all said and done as a 60 year old whos happy to just putt about from a to b . the stock standard dr is just right and at the right price

    • @crosstrainingadventure
      @crosstrainingadventure  4 года назад

      The only problem is the KTM costs close to twice as much, and then often you need to do update the suspension, scrap the tyres, remap the fuel injection, replace the exhaust, change the gearing to try and get around those narrow gear ratios, and scrap the ball breaking seat... mostly the same updates as a DR and then how much has the orange bike cost?

    DOES "FFRC" HAVE A FRONT FORK
    EMULATOR OR INTIMINATOR MOD
    FOR THE BMW F700/800GS SERIES ?

  • @frogzie
    @frogzie 7 лет назад +1

    My (short) experience with the Plex valves...
    My weight is around 75 kg without gears. My DR650 is extensively used off-road, either on gnarly single tracks or faster fire trails; it has no long-range tank and no extra bling. My forks have single rate 0.46 kg/mm springs, along an after-market shock.
    I have never used Intimidators or Emulators so I can't compare the Plex valves performance against them. Nevertheless, without going into details, there is no question that the Plex valves do work and I'm pretty happy with them.
    When you are 80 kg or less, the budget DR's stock shock may be OK for most situations, provided you adjust the sag and set the compression settings adequately. However the non-adjustable forks will never be acceptable. Way too soft. Small jump will make it bottom out and on-road braking can be hair-raising.
    The Plex valves have a definite advantage over other front-end systems since they procure a simple, decent suspension upgrade that is relatively inexpensive and dead easy to install yourself. No needs to remove the forks from the bike, just drop the valves in, add the recommended amount of (stock) oil, keep the original springs or upgrade them, and that's it.
    Of course, if you are heavier or more performance demanding, a shock upgrade will be beneficial as well.

    • @crosstrainingadventure
      @crosstrainingadventure  7 лет назад +3

      great to hear it's working out frogzie. i have used emulators before and they certainly help but i think the plex valves are another step or three up. the stock forks are so bad anything is going to be an improvement lol!

    Question. Now I won't be off-roading the DR like you have in the video. I'll just be riding it down a 13 mile hard dirt road, with a few pot holes and during rain it will be wet. The other half will be street riding on asphalt. Should I think about adjusting the suspension like you recommend? or just leave it alone stock. I just sat on on today, Thursday May 7th, 2020 I am only 5'6, and I was tip toeing with the kick stand up. The dealer said he can lower the suspension 1 3/4 inches. Hopefully this will allow me to stand up using one leg when I stop at lights and stop signs. Do you have any other recommendations I might be able to do with this bike to lower it if this doesn't work? I mean I understand i'm not going to be able to place both feet to the ground while sitting on this bike, but can I do anything else if this doesn't work?
