    Getting skulls with my friends in halo 3 so they could unlock it as well was 1 of my favorite experiences in co-op campaign. And for the friends who were quite competent in higher difficulties, we would knock out both EOD and Hayabusa in 1 run. Along the way i would show them various easter eggs too. When halo 3 odst came around, getting recon was the icing on the cake! So much content and memories were had when we chased these pieces of customization. Showing it off in matchmaking after a long days work was the payoff. Boy was it a perfect system! My solution for Armor Coatings in Infinite:
    Introduce a single "Custom Coating" to the game. This coating would be very rudimentary, only allowing players to customise like 2 or 3 color channels (Acting something like every past Halo before it).
    This would then allow paid or unlockable coatings to feel more "premium" and justifiable - offering unique patterns, textures and materials to separate itself from the regular custom coating. I feel this would also encourage 343i to place more effort making armor coatings far more unique looking instead of like 50 versions of grey.

    • @hummingbird71
      @hummingbird71 2 года назад +14

      If it's between this and cross core customization, I'd take this any day.
      I can see cross core being somewhat problematic with armors possibly clipping into each other due to them being designed with various styles and sizes in mind, especially with fractured cores.
      Basic custom color coatings in addition to the curated armor coatings we have now should make a lot of players old and new happy, and should be less of a headache for 343 to implement (I think). Further monetization in color palettes for custom colors could also be done, similar to Warframe's system. Seems like 343 is listening to player feedback (to some degree), I just hope it won't be as long a wait like MCC had for players to get this level of customization.

      Honestly, I really like the base Spartan customization. The prosthetics, the body-types and the voices let us make Spartan customization feel just a little bit more personal. It's a shame that the armor/monetization system is a strong contender for the worst I've seen in a triple-A game.

    Thank you! Giving Halo 4 some actual credit for the customization for Halo 4.
    One thing I should say is that I personally found both Reach and 4 to be the peak when it came to armour customizations for the games. I WISH Halo 4 gave us the MK VI MOD Chief used Halo 4. Personally, I actually liked how Halo 4 had no arnour effects, and I personally don't like how Halo 4 just got the Reach ones in MCC instead of unique ones. But this was actually a good video man

      I feel like Halo 4 should also get more credit for being the only game in the series, that let you switch out some very major, but weirdly underutilized armor pieces. Namely the legs and the forearms. There is a lot you can get out of just those pieces, so I find it weird how none of the later games allow you to switch them out individually anymore.

    I adore Halo and have for such a long time. Unfortunately, my passion for Halo was awakened by the story of the Arbiter in halo 2. Over a decade of 343 neglecting to include playable elites has honestly caused my love for the series to diminish. I loved customizing my elite and Spartan in both 3 and reach. Not having a choice now leaves me feeling relatively empty with each new Spartan helmet I "unlock"

    As much as people will throw shade at Anthem, they had the “coating” system down right. It was material based. Allowing you to change the different parts of the armors to any material you owned in any combination and allowing a full color wheel for paint customization. That’s what I had hoped for with this “coating” system 343 threw at us. Man was I wrong.

  • @sargeantBones
    @sargeantBones 2 года назад +12

    I feel like they could still fix the coating system without removing it. Maybe instead of functioning like presets they could function like patterns in a way. You equip a coating on your spartan at which point you decide where each color goes. Take scorpion punch for example. It's a 2 color coating so you'd get the option to pick one color for the arm and one for the body. By default every player has all the base colors unlocked like red, orange green, etc. In addition to these base colors you can also unlock shades either via the shop or battlepass, stuff like maroon, salmon pink, or pale yellow. Maybe for each coating you could also customize it's material, so you could have it look more metallic or plastic. This could give players greater incentive to buy coatings since it would mean they get to choose how that coating looks.

    I think if infinite did the coatings similar to how warframe does skins for characters it might of worked out. For example you could have the default looking mk7 armor armor that you can choose the colors you want and you could have the option to buy a camo coating that changes the armor from its default look but you can still choose how the colors look on the armor.

    • @remor698
      @remor698 2 года назад

      I think a different aspect of Warframe is more applicable to the idea of monetizing player made coatings: Color pallettes.
      If you scroll through the armor coating previews on the same armor, I see a pattern of the armor parts being actually split into individual pieces, each of which has a color, material and/or pattern attached to it. That in the hands of the players with color pallettes, material and pattern selections being monetized would yield more creative results than even Warframe could and it would still make 343 quite a bit of money.
      I don't understand how they didn't see this potential.

    A way to potentially fix Infinite's armor color problem: have a custom palette to give us the customization we used to have, and keep some of the preset palettes for those that dont have an eye for customizing colors (or for those that dont really care). BUT, keep the custom curated palettes behind a paywall, which can remain highly detailed and high quality (perhaps moreso). That would not discourage us from purchasing their work, BUT allow us to freely customize without having to break out the credit card.
    If the armor material is desired for customization, we could have what Digital Extremes has done: Voidshell skins! Essentially, we can have Spartan Armor models with CUSTOMIZABLE sections, in which we can not only color them up, but also make them have a special material texture on them! Make armor look as rusted or polished, bent and warped, or even something not even metal, can make our Spartan fashion take a step in the right direction.
    Of course, even IF they dont think Infinite should have Elites, you can argue that the Swords Of Sanghelios are still allied with the UNSC, so it stands to reason that in some Spartan training programs (Multiplayer matches), we can choose to play as a Spartan OR an Elite (even if it has Reach level customization for them, SOMETHING is better than nothing)

    with the ACs in Infinite, lets say the green camo AC for example, they cudve release that and still allowed us to change the primary and secondary colors WITH the free colors that we been getting in past games. that way no two players can have the same AC color. itll be the same AC as the next players BUT only difference is that the players gets to change the colors of em to better fit THEIR spartan. thats where i think they missed the mark with infinite. Also they tried using the campaign as a way for us to go out and explore and i guess "randomly" find secrets , such as ACs, WCs and VCs but like you said, non of it feels earned.

For example, instead of Emile's colors being forced to the black armor with the red shoulder, you would be able to change the color of the shoulder and the base armor. This would allow so many options for players and the armor color/pattern system they made would still be useful.

    I have a simple fix for Infinites coating system that still allows 343 to monetize it. Make a “custom coating” that is the most basic form of polish, and simply allows the player to pick the primary and secondary color. 343 can then continue to sell/allow us to earn coatings that do things like have 4 or more colors, have asymmetrical colors, have different levels of dirt/polish, etc.
