Yeah, much like alot of things I will not mention by name. If they stuck to their original vision, with the normal changes that happen along the way of production rather than a different vision, things mightn't have been great. @@I_dcd And there’s the crux of there problems. 343 has no faith in what they showcase to old and new fans in the games. They don’t take ideas they’ve started with and expand on them in future games, they abandon them and start over from scratch with something else.
I remember seeing that legendary ending in Halo 3 and being soooo excited about the mystery planet Chief was drifting towards. Man, I miss that sense of excitement and wonder. After Reach, it was pretty much a long downfall.
"Stop saying Halo 4 was a love story" Well who's gonna stop me from telling everyone that Halo 4 is a tragic love story where Didact is unable to Express his emotions for chief.
I really do think Spartan Ops was a good idea just done poorly and in place of a loved fire fight if Halo Infinite had a couple of episodes release every season rather than a cutscene that said "go play multiplayer" I think HI would have been a much better experience.
I think one of the primary issues with Spartan Ops is that it was built off multiplayer as a base. If they had instead just used the campaign and basically just had SO be an additional fifty "mini levels," that would have worked a lot better. The way it ended up isn't challenging or fun, because you can just respawn and throw yourself at the wall of enemies over and over again, and the story is decent but not compelling enough to make up for that most of the time. Maybe they had to do it the way they did for some technical reason, but it sucks to see what was honestly a cool idea end up being just kind of meh.
Spartan Ops was a great idea. The way Destiny does its story weekly during Seasons is very similar to Spartan Ops. SpOps was very ahead of its time in certain aspects
@@ClonedGamer001 Although, that respawn mechanic did make it useful for grinding "complete legendary missions" challenges in MCC if you don't have a co-op group to do them with.
Damn. Can't believe 343 dropped the ball with lore again lol I'm SHOCKED. It's almost like when they wrote him, they had an idea but didn't have the balls to finish the story
One thing I don't think anyone truly realizes, is how the Prometheans paralell the Flood in a way in that they both rely on absorbing other life forms to create themselves, with a twist of irony since the Didact made the Prometheans to be the perfect weapon to use against the Flood yet ended up creating another threat on the same scale in a way as the Didact became corrupted because of this goal, just like how the Precursors became corrupted by their own goal for peace and unity yet unfortunately turned into the Flood to do just that, but not in the way they may have originally intended.
Honestly I think it would have been cool if S2 of Spartan Ops focused more on your personal Spartan IV which led up to the interaction with the Didact which then brings Spartan Black into the fold. And then a S3 could have continued from that point, but put Spartan Black more on the back burner to bring Blue Team in which would have been a great build up point to lead into Halo 5.
@@lukebeakum1316 I'd go a step further and retcon everything post Halo 3 and just set games during the long period of the war with the Covenant. Reach already showed you can do just Covenant as the primary enemies.
Honestly I think the skeleton is at least good enough to have been H5's ACTUAL plot. Jus don't kill Black Team, & don't end the Didact in the way they chose to. Everythin else could be added to or given some minor tweaks. The version of H5's story we got was not only the "worst" option of wut I believe to have been like 5 revisions to the story durin development but it was also done in the "worst" way possible too.
Truley a shame that Halo 4,5,6 didn't have Jul Mdama and the Didact as the central antagonists. Really makes the kilo 5 books and Forerunner trilogy kinda sour.
@@Mediados You say that like prior titles had story DLCs or whatnot. Infinite having a new story team does not mean they won't continue from the last game for the next.
@@OKMBVideos Sadly, you're right. Despite that Infinite had a very well developed, well paced, and fleshed out story, a lot of people went into it with a strong negative bias, and 343 is likely to try and appease the fanbase by changing things because they're too considerate to realize that the whiners are always gonna complain no matter what
Brian Reed admitted he killed Black Team simply because he asked 343 who he could kill and they gave him a list which was so dumb. Also he nearly dismembered Fred in this story as well. Should've just made Halo 5 the reunion of Chief and Blue Team and had Didact be the main villain
Not just the Didact but a COMPOSED Didact. Imagine the Warden's deal of physical bodies as well as an AI, but with Cortana's control over the Prometheans we saw in 5, and rather than identical bodies each time the Didact, only freshly digitized into an AI, experiments with different bodies in a way akin to Resident Evil's experiments
Halo: Escalation is when I began to fear that the Halo lore was starting to fray and become incoherent. Forerunner artifacts going unelaborated on, Black Team character assassination, the signs were there.
Most of the Spartan-2s were deleted in a single battle and the Forerunners had a time bending crystal that was destroyed and not remarked on for many years, and those are both from the Bungie era lore. Not saying it's how the writing should be but it was present back then too.
This story like so many of 343s stories around Halo 4 and 5 has so much potential. But they either fucked it up, made the wrong decisions or closed doors which they shouldn't have closed earlier e.g. in Halo 4s terminals. I would have killed for this to be Halo 5 tbh. Shows 343 didn't have an overarching narrative they wanted to tell from Halo 4-5 into 6 and beyond. Just went from pillar to post and didn't plan long term.
The only thing that makes me happy about all this is that everyone in charge of the creative direction are now gone. It can’t get worse, right? Right?!
Where I do think that this is one of the dumbest stories that whole comic series was filled with wtf lore moments. Never forget Halsey outsmarted and HACKED a Contender-Class AI........ HOW?? Mendicant Bias and Offensive Bias are literally the only other 2 we know about God level AI and Halsey outsmarted and hacked it....
Wait, if the Forerunner armor can adapt and become immune to whatever weapon is firing at it, then shouldn't Forerunner weapons be capable of evolving as well, to counter this?
The Janus Key Arc had a strong start and then the ending was so dissappointing. Arbiter showing up in the First issues and the Virus Arc are good on their own right, specially the Virus Arc because no characters from the main games mean real stakes!
15:04 - You actually CAN put out a fire with enough gasoline. If you put enough on it, it'll suck the heat out of the fire and cut off it's oxygen source, taking out two thirds of the fire triangle. It's still a terrible idea, and the metaphor makes sense, but physics is weird sometimes lmao
Do you have any idea how expensive this comic was? Im not the biggest fan of Escalation, but up until now I used to be a halo collector and bough anything I could find that had a halo logo on it. And when it came time to get escalation, the 9th issue, which is the one covered here. suddenly sold out. It was my first experience with the scalper army. And ebay wanted $150 for this comic due to its in game tie in. I eventually got a few copies that were priced lower. It has since lost its value and dropped in price. But I remember my frustration with this well.
I've got an idea, instead of rebooting the entire series like some people toss around, let's reboot the Reclaimer storyline! Wipe everything after 3 and start over. No Created Conflict. No Banished somehow becoming the greatest threat to the galaxy. Just an insane Ur-Didact trying to destroy humanity and restore the Forerunners, like a Zod to Master Chief's Superman.
If they had just stayed the course I think they wouldn't have had nearly as much negative reception. Resolving major character arcs outside of the games is probably one of the dumbest things they could have done. A better idea would have been to have comics about Laskey and Palmer's backstories or something, and leaving the main story stuff with the Didact for the next 2 games.
Also... Sets didact up to be cool new baddie: deletes him Introduces and hypes up osiris: deletes them Introduces maranda keys: dies in h3 Introduces atriox: dead in infinite As for 72 hours, i can deal with his compossion IF they come up with a REALLY good story to whats going on
Want to talk about wasted potential? How about that single Flood Infection Form within the Spirit of Fire with the giant sign above that said "ABANDON SHIP". I still recall all of my friends (Back when we played halo. :( ) theory crafting on what happen to the crew..... that sucked!
Honestly, im glad that the Spirit of Fire wasnt completely flood infected...they could have done more with that, definitely, but then we would have never gotten Halo Wars 2, and right now, the Spirit of Fire is in a perfect position to save the UNSC on Zeta Halo...
It actually makes the Didact look like a coward, "I will tell them some bullshit and get away with this, sacrificing for the greater good is for others lol"
Pretty much agree completely. Loved the Didact. If they were just going to write him out of the story because they changed directions or didn’t know what else to do with him, they should’ve just simply said “he died at the end of Halo 4 like everyone kinda thought.” Next 72 hours did have some very interesting ideas, but ultimately a dissatisfying execution. Halo 5 just continued on the weird unsatisfying stuff even though it had so much potential to be really good. John dealing with the loss of Cortana (still get love story vibes. Sorry not sorry), the Didact being the main antagonist, Jul Mdama leading the new Covenant, the Arbiter…there was just so much potential. I absolutely LOVED Halo 4 and everything it set up. Even the Spartan Ops stuff. And I absolutely LOVED Halo Infinite despite a few issues I had simply because it follows Halo 5 and the fact that Hyperius and Tovarus didn’t get any cool cutscenes or anything to explain why he had Locke’s helmet as a trophy. John didn’t even say anything either, but I still LOVE the game. But between Halo 4 and Infinite is Halo 5, which as you said is the Halo game of missed opportunities. I just kinda have to imagine my own thing to fill the space between 4 and Infinite. Great video. Like I said, basically agree with everything you said
When I clicked the video and for like the first 5 seconds your face had a smile I'd have associated with the victims of the Joker's laughing gas. It was more unsettling because I had just turned off the sound.
Sad im the only one that liked the new art style in halo 4. I loved the black on covenant vehicles. the warthot and scorpion looked REALLY good. I loved the redesigns of some of the weapons (assault rifle being my favorite in halo 4, its firing sound is unmatched) and apparently im also the only one who liked halo 4 for what it was.
I love how the images of the spartan with the partially shattered helmet are blatantly ripping off the cover art for Haze. Which is ironic as fuck considering Haze was supposed to be a "Halo-Killer".
There’s so much wrong with this story that you actually managed to completely skip over one of the worst things about 72 Hours, which is that Blue Team’s reunion with Master Chief was given one single panel… these are characters who grew up together, fought side by side for decades, Blue Team thought Chief was gone forever, they were finally reuniting and…it’s completely glossed over in the story.
I don't understand why they would want to kill off the Didact so fast when he legit had a lot of potential. This dude is the last Forerunner alive and the first one we see in person. As much as 343 hypes up Atriox, the Didact had the same amount of potential as him in terms of being a major antagonist within the series moving forward. Absolute shame they chickened out and instead wrote themselves into a corner with Halo 5.
I was disappointed they ended a villain with such a massive reputation and presence. I was also fine with the armor change on Halo 4, it had an elegant yet formidable design. Although, it was strange to make this change despite the setting Chief was in.
We also gonna ignore the fact that the monitor was ok with taking a chunk out of the ring? In halo 3, guilty spark literally killed Johnson over firing the ring too early, cuz it would sustain damage. But this ones ok with directly ripping a chunk out The most important part, no less. The control room.
Likely was Spark's connection to the installation concerning how long he had to spend there completely alone prior to CE. However yeah this monitor probably had the same wait so the plothole stands out badly.
@@I_dcd Spark was deranged. His programming was battling with his insanity, which is what caused him to be so unpredictable. And, the Rings can rebuild themselves. The Sentinels and other constructs have that capacity. The lesser Ark, too, could build an entirely new ring within a couple months, like 04
So not only does 343 retcon Bungie's lore. They're also retconning their own lore now? I can understand killing off strong characters to show off how big of a threat a villain is. But you gotta show these fan favourite characters put up some kinda fight otherwise you're just killing your own fanbase 😥
@@Angry_Peanut_52 Bungie didn't really retcon it as it was more an example of them learning the actual truth since it was so early on. Meanwhile 343 on the other hand is changing well developed lore for their own benefit just to fit their own story despite multiple previous stories saying otherwise
Honestly, this just makes me wish 343 stuck to the planned Reclaimer trilogy with the Didact as the main antagonist rather than scrap all of it to give us the bundled mess that is Halo 5: Guardians (on a side note am I the only one extremely disappointed that we will probably never fight a Guardian ? Like, those things just scream 'boss fight' to me like the Halo 3 scarabs did.)
Black teams deaths are one of the few things i don't think can be fixed without a full retcon. Halo 4 through infinite have obviously done unfathomable damage to Halos image, but at the end of the day, they can be largely forgotten about in the next installment if needed, like infinite mostly ignoring 5. But 4 of the last handful of spartan II's being killed pretty much off screen? No fixing that.
This story was so stupid. Black team deserved so much better. Them and Rookie had the worst deaths in all of Halo. Those stories are unforgivable and we will not let this bastardization of our beloved characters.
Just a reminder this is the same comic series where Halsey hacked a Contender class AI with an iPad. Who let them cook? Also the Halo 4 slander needs to come to an end.
I agree, this is Halos worst piece of Lore. Some might say Halo 5, and although it made a lot of mistakes, i have been warming up to its ideas, and i hope they are continued properly post-Halo Infinite. With Cortana dead, the Created can surpass the baggage of being "the thing that ruined Cortana" High Auxiliary Sloane is also allowing AIs who didnt agree with Cortanas Plan join them, as he believes different perspectives can lead to a greater outcome.
That's because the Hive would win, hands down. The Flood could only ever even come close to competing with them if they were at the height of their power, like during the Forerunner-Flood war, where they had access to insane levels of neural physics. The Hive ALWAYS has access to that level of what is essentially neural physics though, and their leaders are effectively immortal because when you "kill" them they just retreat to their respective Throne Worlds. I know that destroying the Gravemind's body doesn't KILL him, but he does require a significant amount of time to be rebuilt so he can fully return. That isn't true with Hive Gods, they can return instantly as long as you don't go to their Throne World and kill them again (which cannot be done through means in the Halo universe). This fight would just result in a war of attrition, and the Hive would eventually win simply because they have an infinite number of troops and similar combat capabilities. The Flood requires biomass to transform and create new soldiers, whereas the Hive essentially use magic to just...come back. And that's all assuming we're talking about the Hive before they got access to Hive Guardians, which would absolutely mop the floor with most Flood forms. The only way I could see the Flood coming out on top is if the Gravemind is used to his full potential and does some SERIOUSLY wacky stuff involving neural physics and his immense planning capabilities. But that's veering into unknown territory with the Flood's abilities because we've never SEEN them do anything on that level. Sure, the Gravemind being able to literally warp space-time with his thoughts to make travel times shorter is really cool, but the Hive can just...teleport between places at the same speed anyway. The Flood is also only capable of doing things like that when at the height of their power, which I already conceded would give them a decent fighting chance, but they wouldn't get anywhere close to that powerful if the fight started earlier, because the Hive are that strong from the get-go.
I really disliked how 343 killed off a lot of big name characters off-screen for God knows why. First The Rookie, then Black Team and then Demarco from Spartan Ops. It seems like they can't agree on what direction they want the lore to go. Those characters had SO much potential for possible badass spin-off games. This whole franchise since 343 took over has been shockingly mismanaged.
Rookie wasn't a character we knew litterally nothing about him he have more lore on Chipps Dubbo than we do the rookie the only reason anyone cared about him was because we played as him but we also played as litterally every other member of alpha nine as well. His death was far more impactful as character motivation for giving reason as to why alpha nine was in the state that it was in
@@collincaperton6718 Honestly, agreed. Rookie was more or less just a vehicle for the player to control in the game. And yeah, his death and what that did to the rest of Alpha Nine led to a pretty interesting story.
@@collincaperton6718 Sure but that doesn't mean he couldn't have been used in some other way. Point being that 343 could have done so much more than they did with the palette of characters they had available to them. Heck, you could even argue the same for Master Chief. He was mostly taciturn, save for some cutscenes in the first 3 games, giving the player a chance to "feel" like the Chief for the most part. His background story was saved for the novels and the games gave no history of his upbringing, training, etc until Halo 4. But I can also see your point regarding why he had to die. I just think the way they killed him off was a bit over the top.

Yeah, much like alot of things I will not mention by name. If they stuck to their original vision, with the normal changes that happen along the way of production rather than a different vision, things mightn't have been great.
But things would've had time to cook at least. Instead it felt like each of the 343 games were trying to start a new trilogy of their own. @@I_dcd

Well who's gonna stop me from telling everyone that Halo 4 is a tragic love story where Didact is unable to Express his emotions for chief.

I really do think Spartan Ops was a good idea just done poorly and in place of a loved fire fight
if Halo Infinite had a couple of episodes release every season rather than a cutscene that said "go play multiplayer" I think HI would have been a much better experience.
As Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear said, "ambitious but rubbish."
343 needs to take notes from your comment
Spartan Ops was a great idea. The way Destiny does its story weekly during Seasons is very similar to Spartan Ops. SpOps was very ahead of its time in certain aspects
@@ClonedGamer001 Although, that respawn mechanic did make it useful for grinding "complete legendary missions" challenges in MCC if you don't have a co-op group to do them with.

One thing I don't think anyone truly realizes, is how the Prometheans paralell the Flood in a way in that they both rely on absorbing other life forms to create themselves, with a twist of irony since the Didact made the Prometheans to be the perfect weapon to use against the Flood yet ended up creating another threat on the same scale in a way as the Didact became corrupted because of this goal, just like how the Precursors became corrupted by their own goal for peace and unity yet unfortunately turned into the Flood to do just that, but not in the way they may have originally intended.
....Holy Shit, that's Actually a Great Parallel between the Prometheans and The Flood.

The concept of Blue Team working with Black Team to find The Didact is really cool. Great video

One retcon I am down with is the de-canonization of the *Next 72 Hours* comic.

Agreed! Such a shame they wasted such an interesting and cool character.
Truley a shame that Halo 4,5,6 didn't have Jul Mdama and the Didact as the central antagonists.
Really makes the kilo 5 books and Forerunner trilogy kinda sour.
343 has clear committment issues. The Didact, Cortana, Atriox, pick a villain already. Now we have 3 dead story ends.
Atriox isn't dead and is still the main antagonist of the new arc of the story.
@@Espartanica They stomped the story department. We are not going to see any story expansion within the next 3 years
@@Mediados You say that like prior titles had story DLCs or whatnot.

@@Espartanica Absolutely no way they continue in this direction after the reaction to Infinite.
Another reason why no studio should cooperate with marvel universe trash and its writer.
You have been on a roll with these recent videos, love to see it!
Thanks man, having a tonne of fun making them :)
This is the result of being so confident in your writing despite how detached you really are to what you are writing. Bravo 343.
343 is not confident in their writing. If they were, Halo 5 would have had the Didact as its main villian.

Pretty much agree completely. Loved the Didact. If they were just going to write him out of the story because they changed directions or didn’t know what else to do with him, they should’ve just simply said “he died at the end of Halo 4 like everyone kinda thought.”
Next 72 hours did have some very interesting ideas, but ultimately a dissatisfying execution.

Ah, the Next 72 Hours. Another Brian Reed classic!
There is no Halo TV Show. The only show Halo ever got was Red vs Blue.
Imagine if the Didact had been wreaking havoc for a couple games and then Bornstellar came back to face him

But you gotta show these fan favourite characters put up some kinda fight otherwise you're just killing your own fanbase 😥
The whole retconning of Forerunners being ancient humans was all Bungies doing. They made humans and Forerunners separate species in Halo 3
@@Angry_Peanut_52 Bungie didn't really retcon it as it was more an example of them learning the actual truth since it was so early on. Meanwhile 343 on the other hand is changing well developed lore for their own benefit just to fit their own story despite multiple previous stories saying otherwise

343's handling of halo is the biggest blunder in video gaming history
I've seen worse, like Naughty Dog with TLOU2, or Bungie with Destiny.
The rookie dying off screen still hurts
Can you do a video on halo flood vs the hive from destiny? I cant find anyone who has covered this
That's because the Hive would win, hands down.
