Thank you for this, my Father was a Zappa obsessive. I was a little kid listening to Billy was a Mountain and Jewish Princess. I have inherited all his vinyls and photos they took seeing him live 100x over. Zappa always makes me feel connected to my Dad.

It was indeed Ralph Humphrey on drums. The full lineup on this album is:
    FZ-guitar & vocals
    Ralph Humphrey-drums
    Sal Marquez-trumpet & vocals
    George Duke-keyboards & synthesizer
    Tom Fowler-bass
    Bruce Fowler-trombone
    Ruth Underwood-marimba, vibes & percussion
Ian Underwood-flute, clarinet, alto & tenor sax
    Jean-Luc Ponty-violin & baritone violin
Backing vocals: Tina Turner, Debbie & Lynn (the Ikettes)
Dirty Love is one of the more straight forward songs from this album. Zombie Woof for example is a lot more complex and crazy. Ralph Humphrey also plays (together with Chester Thompson at the same time) on the live album Roxy and Elsewhere and the excellent Roxy movie made from the same concerts. If you really want to see these musicians in action, check out the Roxy movie.

Yeah, I have a huge soft spot for the "dull" 70s drums. Makes me want to have a space of my own where I can try to rig up that sound. I haven't succeeded in getting that fully through in my DAW. Not even the 70s drums in the old Toontrack selection sounds like that...

EDIT: "Poodle Bites, Poodle Chews" is a line that recurs here and there in his oeuvre.
EDIT/EDIT: You should consider something (anything) off his Joe's Garage effort. It's, IMO, his magnum opus. Maybe even consider doing an entire side of the four sided album. It's structured like the score to a musical play about the pitfalls of the music industry. Every song is a blast and in its totality, the whole is far more than the sum of its parts!
