Super rare find, and also Ed Boon’s comment on this being for kids too. Oh oh oh! Thank goodness the ESRB didn’t see that back then. Heh. It’s ancient history now but wow all the archive footage is awesome. A completely different time in gaming, when the limitations of the time pushed for creative solutions. 🎉
Wow this is so long ago I feel old. I play mortal Kombat 1 and 2 and 3 on my android phone I like mortal Kombat. I even play mk2+ and umk3+ on my phone with my moga controller.
Amazing footage! It’s crazy to think that Ed Boon has been involved with Mortal Kombat since day one until now! I don’t know many other game creators with such longevity.
Please more like this videos!!!. Awesome to see when MK was MK, with guys like Daniel Pesina, Divizio, Ho Sun Pak, John Tobias, when there were no troubles at all.
@@KenMasters.I’d say it shattered the story at the end, and the music was semi-bland in some places, but I get you. It just felt like campy fun, and controlled really damn well. X got dumb, story wise, and the OST was rancid, but the gameplay was so damn smooth. :)
@@K12machinima MK's gameplay never fails to impress. But X though… It was like if Kathleen Kennedy of the Star Wars Rey Saga became the CEO of NeatherRealm. The only "progressive" thing that everyone actually liked was how the Asian characters actually look and sound Asian this time. The sucking thing is that MK is now too woke to be silly and comical, Raiden no longer yells *Furaingu Sandaa Rei!!!* (Japanese: "Flying Thunder Ray")when tackle-flying at his opponents because "it’s mockingly offensive to Japanese people". As a Japanese-American, they can just STFU and stop patronizing me.
@insertcoindoc it saddens me that places like Dave & Busters have lame arcades or what a RUclipsr would call them kiddie casino arcades. There are some places that have retro arcades like MK, Street Fighter, etc. but where I am currently in Albany, NY I haven’t found a place that has REAL Arcades.
Check out galloping arcade in Chicago. Prob the biggest in usa , 930+ 80s,90s,2000s, arcade cabinet type games. I want to drive there 4my birthday this year. I'm in Brooklyn NY. 12 hrs drive lol
@@jfitnesshealth I’ve seen the place on RUclips. I hope to go to Chicago and go there and hopefully NetherRealm Studios. I’ve been to the Barcade in NYC and Billy’s Midway Arcade in New Jersey, I just can’t believe Albany got nothing though.

Yup that is the one I play it cost a quarter at the laundromat, no tutorials no manuals, I was loosing and freak out, push all the buttons and did a fatality 😂 no I had no idea how I did it, but all the people there yo wtf was that 😂 I did got really really good at it, I will go to the mall and there be a line trying to beat me, the owner of the arcade will come over and say, take a brake let them play, good old day, on that note where is Kano on mk1 what is up with that ?
Interviewer: "This isn't really meant for kids though is it?" Ed: "Actually it is" US Gov.: "Am I a joke to you?" and thats my friends is how ESRB exists.
These guys knew what they were doing. Kids of all ages loved mortal Kombat but it was definitely more geared towards older kids like 10 and up. The moves were complicated. I remember when mortal kombat came to genesis and I had to do a special code to get blood. I still remember that code. Abacabb. I remember my mom being concerned over the blood and I told her. Mom it's make believes it's not real. And my mom was like it's looks real. I'm like mom that blood from that one uppercut is more blood than the human body has. It's cartoonish. I was clever as a 10 year old. I just didn't want her to take the game away.
Dear God I did the same shit, and it WORKED!!! Didn't fair so well with some other games, but in this case worked like a charm, been my favorite franchise since.
Fascinating :) MK is not a game, it is a philosophy. Huge fan (understatement) since day 1! Blessed, cause i have 6 or 7 Ed Boon autographed MK games here in my collection. CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY!
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it was a press thing, because they’d already gotten the footage they needed for the animations at that point, as Ed mentioned he’d already coded to the footage. I mean, to be fair, MK was one of the first games to fully utilize digitized sprites, and make them look good, so, showing people how they did it was a smart idea, as far as press goes. :)
That reporter has no idea how they worked on mortal kombat they don't record the fights like that each one do what ever move they can use in the game and it's programmed and its edit from the editor in to the game
Homie with the cigarette is a true MK veteran haha.
This footage is super clear and well preserved, especially for the year 1991. Awesome footage!
MK1 is from 1992.
@@xmini-ul7je Correct, but this is development footage from 1991. The game was developed in 1991. Released in 1992 to arcades and the public.

Beautiful footage. The beginning of a legend.
Also, all the actors and the crew are super nice.
I really prefer this cast over the ones from the 1995 movie,
in which Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's Shang Tsung carried everything.
These dudes still hang out together and to all types of conventions, it's really cool to see
16 year old in me who spent hours in arcades playing MK is screaming right now.
I'm stressing my muscles trying to be born ten years earlier
Omg a buudy and i spent all oyr allowances every weekend playing this and when MK2 come out we spent more
Such clear footage, what a treasure of the origins of Mortal Kombat!
Great footage. Shame about the interviewer
Wild footage. Cigarettes and arcade machines, what a vibe

Has he done anything else besudes MK?
This is still the best mortal kombat they ever created ❤ happened now nowhere good what they did back then

Part of history is over there. Great quality.
Not woke costumes, not micro transactions, not DLC, not reboots, not “another timeline”, just Mortal Kombat 🔥
MK9 was the last game in the franchise to not have any of that "modern" bullsh!t.

And now these same devs are corporate bootlickers it’s a shame WB owns them and midway is gone
The interviewer was kind of a dick at times... but the MK team just kept it fun! Would've loved to meet these guys, they're heroes to me.

Richard Divisio is so sexy!!!
Holy shit the MK team even had HD cameras before they were invented.
