I had the 2017 Mazda CX-5 and I loved the way it drove. Only complaints I had were that the dashboard (the screen was also too small) wasn't loaded with more tech and the "leather" seats were very hard and uncomfortable.
I would have thought that at 20k miles, the bumper to bumper warranty would still be in place and you could have had the seat trim replaced. Just picked up a CX-5 for my wife and she loves it. I will agree on the thin paint. Be sure to get some touch up paint and keep it handy.
I just bought my 2018 CX-5 Touring for $17,200 at the end of my lease (residual value). How you noticed a difference in how the seat feels between the 2018 and the 2021? I've been reading in the forums that the comfort of the leather seats have changed after 2019...that they are firmer now. I have a 2021 and I feel the seats are very firm.
They do feel firmer but we moved from fake leather to real leather. My parents also noticed the seats dont get as hot from the seat heaters in the real leather seats as they used to in the fake leather. A full review of the 2021 CX-5 will be available on my channel on May 25th!

Enjoy your new CX-5! I really like your review because a pre owned CX5 may be in my future. There so many on the road where I live that dealers usually have a good selection to choose from. Given wher I stand I probably will be considering a pre owned 2017-2020 in a few years. I am glad that are trouble free. I have a question about the paint color, if not the grey & red how does the black, white and silver paint hold up?
I own a crystal white pearl 2019 CX5 GT 2.2 Turbo Diesel and the paint is very nice, car is outside and under a tyvek car cover most days - 20,000 Miles / 32000 Kms - will be with me for another 2 years. Excellent performance and better fuel economy than the turbo petrol.
I have a 2018 CX-5 GT , 30k mileage . Traded in a 2005 6 , both bought new. No problems, have had Honda's & Acura's also. Probably keep this car for many years.
I borrowed my neighbours 18’cx5 gt and she filled the tank before hand. Once on the highway. I reset the trip and was getting 7L/100kms. But after the 400km trip, I filled it & it only got 9L/100kms. I’ll have to see if she filled it all the way. Also her trip 2 was 3,000kms and showed 13L/100kms. Mazda needs a hybrid option. I really thought the projected digital speedometer on the windshield was safe and cool. The lack of Apple CarPlay & Lane Keep Assist was a minor inconvenience. The leather seats looked cheap.
I bought a 2014 Mazda CX-5 the first with the sky active technology in 01/13 it was their top of the line Signature model. I recently traded it in for a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Addition. The new has a lot of more features and is quieter in the inside, but the biggest plus is the turbo engine. The real surprise is I paid about the same for both vehicles $31,000. How does Mazda 8 years later sell me a better equipped CX-5 for the same money? Mazda for the money is the best car line on the market. The CX-5 is my wife’s I am waiting to see if Mazda will come out with the 6 in rear wheel drive with the inline 6 cylinder engine. If they do I will be first inline.
I just bought a 21 and I love it! Only thing I will say is I only get about 260 miles in range after filling up not sure if anyone else’s is the same. Other than that i love it!
I know what you mean but the fuel gauge isn’t so friend. If you look at the total gallon when you fill up to full, if it’s probably around 10-11 gallons. The car have a 14.8 or 15.3 gas tank capacity so if you think about it, the extra 3-4 gallons before empty can get you another 100 miles.
Mazda is going up market! Would not surprise me if the new CX5 is $3K more than this generation. Just like they did with the Mazda 3. Cars are rapidly getting out of reach for a lot of people.
I just purchased one of these in July I haven’t had that issue yet and I have about the same amount of miles well it makes me feel relieved to know that doesn’t sound like there’s much wrong with it
Just bought a Grand Touring AWD CX-5 without the turbo last week. So far, we love it! Glad to watch and read all of the positive reviews. I think we made a good choice!
Just bought a 2021 Grand Touring, same color, so glad to hear about the paint. I am still learning all the features. I have one question. When you raise or lower the power tailgate is there any safety mechanism that will stop it in case a kid tries to reach in when coming down. Or, when raising in a new spot, stopping it from hitting the parking deck top. The windows have one so if you have your arm out the window it stops. The liftgate is much heahier.
He makes a great point at about 6:10 about getting another CX-5. I had two consecutive Mazda 3's of the same generation - a 2014 and 2018 - and I have NEVER done that before (I've been owning cars since 1986). My 3's were also a Touring-to-Grand Touring step up. I now have a 2019 CX-5 GT Reserve and not one competitor makes me want to leave it. Mazda has a magic to it that I hope they don't lose. I was a Honda driver for 18 straight years because they just had that something about them; then they lost the plot (and regained it recently, but then also dunked their head in the CVT/economy turbo bucket, so I'm not quite interested again).
Hey there, curious about the switch from Touring to Grand Touring. Anything in particular get you to upgrade to the higher trim level after the 2018, or was it just to gove it a try? Anyway, great vid, thanks for the info!
The soul red is not a thin paint. The mx5s with that paint job were delivered to the race teams and they asked to not ship those because I’d the added weight of the paint
thanks for sharing your experience with cx 5. any comments on the infotainment screens? the new model has a bigger screen. there is a used 2018 cx 5 GT for sale near me. my only concern is the smaller screen. do you think the difference is huge since you have driven both models?
I'm curious what your thoughts are on the infotainment menus. Everyone seems to agree the screen is a lot better, but I've seen people say the menus are more difficult to use compared to the old system.
I owned the exact same Cx5 model (but 2020) as you, loved the color & wheels…. My seat panel didn’t come loose. However, do you (or anyone here) find the transmission little jerky? I find it downshift often, slows down my car quickly… my dealer didn’t find anything wrong…
@@ShootingCars Thanks, but I wonder if this created another problem.... I share the car w/ my wife... I drive aggressive, she drives slow... so how's the car learning? I'll ask dealer later if can turn off learning mode.
I posted this on another review: I just finished paying off mine after 6 years, and I have a list of what bothers me with mine: hellishly shocky ride quality, bad brakes, infotainment system that sometimes chooses a random screen when I start the car, when I re-select the song list from a USB thumb drive it always takes me back to the top instead of showing me the currently playing song, A/C sometimes likes to switch from dash vents to floor vents while cutting off the compressor (a real necessity in the summer). I see that they moved the start button out from behind the steering wheel, but on my 2016 it made no sense to have the start button obscured. The one thing I do like above the competition is that this car has a real transmission & no CVT. As soon as I take care of a few things I'm trading mine in for something with a better ride and more reliable. Something I forgot to mention before is that a few times a year the navigation claims I don't have the SD card installed and I need to go Mazda to get one. After I restart the car the navigation detects the SD card. There were two recalls, one for the gas filler and one for the rear door struts. Something that many CX-5 owners have mentioned is the center console compartment latch will eventually break and a new latch will need to be installed. I got mine for about $6 at the dealer and I installed it myself.
@@kd5you1 as a matter of fact they did address most of what you said, one of the big things for the new gen in 2017 was ride quality and NVH, and now for 2021 the infotainment is 100x better. Try test driving one of the new ones and see if you feel like its a possible upgrade!
@@unrealisticgoals I hate to say this but some things are engraved in stone. Every time I see another Mazda I'm reminded of what I experience on a daily basis. I've written off Mazda for any future purchases, and besides, I'm planning on getting a truck that I can use to pull a trailer that weighs more than 12000 lbs. :)
We just test drove a CX-5, grand touring reserve. Loved the car but after watching reviews I’m not sure about the infotainment screen. Is it user friendly?
To me they are, but they are no longer touch screen which some people do not like. The software is decent, the Mazda navigation is not good, but if you use apple carplay or android auto you’ll never notice Mazda’s system
My 2017 just hit 40k miles has issues with the electronic parking brake. Seems to eat the rear brake pads super fast and the rear bumper under the taillight popped off some clips so doesn't line up perfect with the body. Should've got a RAV4...
Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 both have about 7 cubic feet more space than the CX-5. So if you need that extra 7 cubic feet for things you haul around, then the CX-5 wouldn't be a good fit. I've never encountered a problem running out of space in mine though.
@@Grebus Mazda's are very stylish... I just take the more cargo space plus that extra sense of reliability... not saying Mazda isn't reliable now, they are but we all know the king of reliable vehicles
Did you consider a lease buy-out, and if so, what drove your decision to lease the same car again? Since lease buy-out rates were determined 3 years ago and used car prices have skyrocketed, you would have likely paid less for a lease buy-out than the current wholesale value of your CX-5, gaining equity in the process!
I don't remember what the price was, but the dealer paid off our last three months of the lease early and gave us nearly the same price on the new one. With my parents getting older, it's really important to have a reliable car so a 0 mile car was more intriguing than a 20,000 mile one.
So I must have an exception to the rule. My transmission makes a band or pow feeling like someone hit me from behind in going from first to second gear???? I feel cheated!!! Cannot duplicate at dealer. Problem started at 489 miles BRAND NEW! I am done!!
I have the same 2.5 non turbo in my Mazda 3 as well as of course we have it in this cx5. I love the engine, I’ve never felt like it needed more power and gets good fuel economy! I’d say go turbo if you really love driving and driving a car in a sporty manor, but otherwise it’s not necessary

Wonderful review man! I was worried at first but I’m glad to see you still love the CX-5. I am looking at the CX-5 or the 2022 Civic Sedan Sport. I know they are in two different segments, but they are practical, reliable and fun. Does the CX-5 provide a “fun” enough drive, or should I go for the Civic?
My 21 cx5 gt non-turbo isnt exactly a racecar, but its not a slouch either. I dont have any issues pulling out into traffic and getting up to speed, i get 25 mpg city, nice ride, nice build quality, nice grocery getter but it aint gonna soak panties
Funny, I'm looking at the 2022 Civic Hatch myself as well, along with the CX-5. I'm a big Honda fan, especially after owning 3 civics and putting 400K miles on my '93 Accord. But Honda reliability ain't what it used to be. I would be careful.
We're at 50k on our '16 and so far it's normal maintenance. We aren't hamstring with lease milage limitations. I will agree the soul red paint is not durable. It looks great, but can't (rock) chips like crazy. Mazda needs to use German paint. Our replacement will be bigger, think CX-9/Telluride/Grand Cherokee...
doesnt bumper to bumper cover stuff like your seat plastic thing? since it a lease and you returned it, they'll fix it before they sell it as pre-certified..
No. Bumper to bumper is only for big things. I had to pay for my seat clip in my 2015 mazda3, and I had the seat cushion replaced because the stitching went bad. Originally they were not going to warranty the replacement as it happened in 2017. The seat cushions are only covered for 1 year.
I think it’s a great starter car!! I got a Hyundai Elantra as my first car to last me through college. Right around graduation this May, I planned on purchasing a Mazda CX-5 because I fell in love with the vehicle. I couldn’t find one in my market for the price & specs that I wanted. So I ended up going with a Hyundai Tucson! I still plan on purchasing a Mazda CX-5 in the next year or so

260k in just 3 years!!!!??? I've been looking for a used cx5 and I keep seeing these with very high mileage! Are you guys all meeting up at the same Mazda cx convention!? 🤣
@@taylarogers313 🤣. That's a helluva lot of miles in 3 yrs. Many yrs ago I had a long commute and would put 40k + /yr and thought that was awful. Can't imagine 260k in 3 yrs. Yikes. Did he ever get out of his car????
Just bought a lease return 2018 touring CX5 with only 12k miles. Got a great deal. Unfortunately a doofus let his shopping cart go in a parking lot and totally smashed the rear bumper. 😤. We got the white. Love the color.
How much did you get it for ?
It had 18940 miles on it, and I did all my oil changes (every 4K miles with Mobil1 Extended Full Synthetic), and kept it immaculate in my garage. Car prices have skyrocketed, and I thought where can I buy a great car in this great of shape for $17,200? I couldn't, so I bought it :) Love this car...zero problems, drives great, and I don't see a reason it won't easily hit 150K miles with proper maintenance.
Congrats on your new 2021 CX-5 Grand Touring...it looks gorgeous!
What was the MSRP of the car?
We had a 2014 CX-5 grand touring and traded it in 2016. We absolutely hated the seats, they were very uncomfortable for long rides and we did a lot of traveling back then so we got rid of it. Other than that it was a good vehicle
I have a 2018 Grand touring and my biggest grip with the car is the seats. Very uncomfortable.
@@irandoosty gripe
Good choice I own Mazda and they are amazing quality product and very reliable and I love the way it drives and very comfortable seating Congratulations 👍👍👍👍👍 let’s not forget it’s 💯%. Made in Japan 🇯🇵
lol
It’s a Mazda it’s going to be reliable regardless of where it’s made, made in Japan means absolutely nothing it’s just being xenophobic
I have a 17 CX5 in the same color. Grand Touring with the upgraded option package which includes head up display, heated steering wheel and rear seats, memory seats. I have 43,000 miles on it. Replaced the original tires this past Tuesday. Runs great. No problem areas. Waiting on the 2022 redo. Great video!
@@ShootingCars The seats are a concern for us as well., but we're about to pull the trigger on a 2021 CX-5. Any updates you can provide? Have the seats softened up? BTW, I did a double take when I noticed the lic plate frames, looks like we go to the same dealer!
@@J.Weldon I have a 2020 CX-5 Signature. It has Nappa leather seats and they were a bit firm at first but perhaps not as firm as the Mazda's standard leather. Gradually they will soften as the leather naturally breaks in from repeated use.
@@GizmoRob176 thanks. We ended up with the Grand Reserve and are really happy with it. Give me a beep beep if you see a light blue cx-5 with after market roof racks driving around town.

Best car ever. I talked my brother in law to buy a 2016 cx5 I have own 2 cx5 a 2017 and a 2018 . I have the 2018 cx5 grand touring in Mecca blue with the white leather interior omg it’s beautiful love my car
Love my 2020 CX-5 Signature. It's a great car!
I have almost 42k on my 2018 cx5. Changed the stock toyo tires at 37k. Will need new rear brakes in the next 6 months. Other than that, 0 complaints
Update ...needed new brakes and rotors at 43k. Rotors get rusty inside. Horrible
2016 here. Bought in 2015, 6 years ago when my son was born. STILL running like a champ, no issues. Gotta agree with the seat issue, the seats arent the best, but man I still love this truck, my family has grown in it. Still tons of fun to drive, gas mileage is still great, we are just outgrowing it with two growing kids.
whoooaaa a 2016 and it’s still running well?!
I fondly remember the review of the 2018. I’ve been on the channel for a little while. Sad to see it go, but happy to see a new member
We just got a 2019 CX-5 Grand touring in the different color mica blue which we love also and it had 41k Miles 1 owner lease trade in from my town. got a super dealer asking $ 26,998 with tax title reg in my state of Connecticut makes it $29,799 dollars out the door. With a 3-year 100k miles powertrain certified warranty. We love this car. Has the bose apple care play and no issues with the 2.5l non turbo and 6 speed trans all made in Japan. BLK leather interior is so nice and clean
My 4th Mazda cx3, cx5, cx9, and cx5 again. Love Mazda. QUALITY AND COMPORT AND ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES ONE NEEDS!
lol, I was surprised when you say you wanted to replace the CX-5 and was not surprised the replacement was the almost same car..Good choice.
I just got the red with white interior I love it 😍
I bought a new Mazda in 92 95 2011 and 2020 , my wife drives one and I drive the other. First 2 had over 200 thousand miles on them and all I ever did was put a half shaft in one because my wife hit a few deep potholes. I changed plugs in the 92 at about 120 grand in the summer , but it didn't need them. the 2011 has 75 thou on it and the 2020 has 5000 I love both of them , especially the 2020 cx5 . I am an old man and it already saved me from an accident , I started to change lanes ,safety beeped and light came on and I stopped , guy went past me , after hanging on my bumper for?
You just CONFIRMED it for me this is the vehicle I should get... and ohh bo, I am. TY for the review 👍🏽
That shows how much Mazda cx5 is a good car. I agree forever Mazda 👍
May fav color on mazda is also blue. It looks good and unique.
It is beautiful with the Parchment interior!
I had a 2014 Mazda 6 and it was the best car I ever owned. Was going to buy another one but was turned off by the cylinder deactivation.
Same here! I got the fwd version as they don’t have it in those models, only awd , (vice versa previous 2 model years)
I had a 2015 CX-5. I got rid of it and got a 2022 CX-5. I also looked at the RAV-4 and the Forester. I went with the CX-5 because I like it better.
I have the 2018 and thinking 2021 is in my future. I absolutely love this car
It's sleek!!
I'm planning on having a 1 yr lease on the CX5 since there is an upcoming inline 6 engine next year
Mazda is going up market!
How many miles to fill up your tank Micheal Gabriel Thankyou in advance
They sound good when pushed hard...deep growl from the dual exhaust ...sounds like a V6 truck....cool engine.
They don't really have dual exhaust. There are two pipes coming out of the muffler.
I’ve put 20k miles on my 2019 in the past year! Absolutely zero issues, currently has 37500 miles.
Love my 2021 Grand Touring in white 😊
Congratulation.
How much did you got before tax? I am going to buy cx5 touring or GT too
I completely expect to watch maybe 1 min of this. But... you're entertaining. Keep it up man
Just bought a 2021 Grand Touring, same color, so glad to hear about the paint.
Anyway, great vid, thanks for the info!
how good is mpg highway? 100km/h? what is real fuel conscumption km/l?
I drive the cx5 diesel. The torque is addictive, great fuel economy, great handling and so far no issues. Love it.
Had mine almost 4 years, 21000 miles and haven't had a single problem.
I'm curious what your thoughts are on the infotainment menus. Everyone seems to agree the screen is a lot better, but I've seen people say the menus are more difficult to use compared to the old system.
What do you think of the arm rest? It seems kinda small and hard to actually rest your arm on it.
Agree. I also have a CRV and it has real arm rests.
I owned the exact same Cx5 model (but 2020) as you, loved the color & wheels…. My seat panel didn’t come loose. However, do you (or anyone here) find the transmission little jerky? I find it downshift often, slows down my car quickly… my dealer didn’t find anything wrong…
Make sure the car isn’t in sport mode. It changes the gearing in sport. It also “learns” your driving style, the dealer can reset it
@@ShootingCars Thanks, but I wonder if this created another problem....
Yours is the old model. not this one!
@@a.j.patron9214 So? Having a different model doesn't mean that all of the problems were fixed.
@@kd5you1 as a matter of fact they did address most of what you said, one of the big things for the new gen in 2017 was ride quality and NVH, and now for 2021 the infotainment is 100x better. Try test driving one of the new ones and see if you feel like its a possible upgrade!

I hate to say this but some things are engraved in stone.
Is it a lot more to lease higher trims? I’ve never leased, the reason I ask is because all I ever see is lower trims or the sport model for lease?
Where did You get information on how thick the paint coatings are on the Car?
My 2017 just hit 40k miles has issues with the electronic parking brake. Seems to eat the rear brake pads super fast and the rear bumper under the taillight popped off some clips so doesn't line up perfect with the body. Should've got a RAV4...
My issue with Mazda CX-5 or all Mazda products compared 2 competitors is the cargo space... super bad
Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 both have about 7 cubic feet more space than the CX-5. So if you need that extra 7 cubic feet for things you haul around, then the CX-5 wouldn't be a good fit. I've never encountered a problem running out of space in mine though.
@@edwardmackey747 that extra space is very needed and it makes a huge difference. I brought a Rav4 over CX-5 due 2 space
I'll sacrifice a little cargo space for the superior styling of the Mazda (this is a small SUV after all).

I purchased the carbon turbó edition. So far I have not seen another one on the road. Makes me feel unique
So I must have an exception to the rule. My transmission makes a band or pow feeling like someone hit me from behind in going from first to second gear???? I feel cheated!!! Cannot duplicate at dealer. Problem started at 489 miles BRAND NEW! I am done!!
I didn't like how they changed the key fob to the newer style fob. I liked the old one better
That Dark Blue Is Super Nice 👍🏾
How’s the non turbo 2.5. About to buy same car. Any info appreciated

@@ShootingCars I purchased two cars from them and travelled from Countryside to Naperville for service because I was so loyal to Continental dealerships. Good to know that nothing has changed but the name!

Does the cx5 GT have digital speedo?
@@JimMontanus I agree. With the AC condensers and the oil dilution issues, Honda isn’t as reliable as it was.
Thank you !! Great review
doesnt bumper to bumper cover stuff like your seat plastic thing? since it a lease and you returned it, they'll fix it before they sell it as pre-certified..
No. Bumper to bumper is only for big things. I had to pay for my seat clip in my 2015 mazda3, and I had the seat cushion replaced because the stitching went bad. Originally they were not going to warranty the replacement as it happened in 2017. The seat cushions are only covered for 1 year.
I am a freshman college student , do you think a 2017 cx-5 used grand touring would be good as a starter car ?
No. Get a Honda or Corolla until you have the funds for a newer car of your choice. Why do college kids think SUV’s are starter cars.
@@robob221 I am tall . I tried Corolla and I feel super awkward

From what I've read, the paint issues seem to be on the Machine Gray and Soul red. I didn't see many people talking about the blue, white, or black. This is just going of forum and Facebook posts!
