Before What We Do In The Shadows, Matthew Berry was mostly known for The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, 2 British tv classics. He's also the voice of a robot in the upcoming Fallout tv show.
The use of piano music was a movie reference, like you were guessing. The main piece you guys were humming was "The Entertainer" by by Scott Joplin. It was used along with some other piano tracks in a 1970s movie about two grifters called "The Sting" starring two of the GOATs -- Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
I'm kind of surprised they didn't pick up on that. I've never seen The Sting and knew nothing about it, but considering that they literally watched it in the episode, I put the context clues together to assume that they were doing an homage of it.
@@peterlewis2178 Honestly a really great movie, my dad would let us kids watch it (not too violent for the 80's) and we loved how they screwed the bad guy over at the end. Classic grift!
Yeah, the final season was on Yahoo. It was when everybody was trying to have a streaming services of some type. 9:15 That was the original TV show, The Equalizer, from the 80's.
Every line Matt Berry speaks in anything is always pronounced to perfection. Shows he's had a prominent role in other than WWDITS: -Garth Marenghi's Darkplace -The IT Crowd (season 2 onwards) -The Mighty Boosh season 1
Ryan Ridley isn't just The Guy From Jeff's Gym, he's also a writer for Community and Rick & Morty, as well as being a producer and doing voices on Rick & Morty.
The final shot is a spoof of the 80's show the Equaliser which was remade into the films with Denzel Washington. The music is from the Sting starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman which was about grifting
The style of the episode is based on The Sting itself and the ridiculousness of it is because Dan Harmon has a famous dislike of of grifting/heist movies and how over the top they can be
You guys should watch The Sting. It’s actually a really good movie, but you need to be patient and pay attention to what’s happening. I don’t know if the characters finding the movie boring represents Dan Harmon’s views on The Sting, but I find it funny nonetheless.
Clearly, The Sting should be watched soon. The music is from that movie, the still pictures in between the shots is an homage to the movie as well. Robert Redford, Paul Newman and several others are in it.
At this point, I'm tempted to try and convince people to vote for The Cape, just so the others can finally watch it and Aaron can have vindication. And I haven't even watched it myself!
The spinoff final shot is a reference to the original Equalizer series from the 90’s with Edward Woodward (which was remade as the denzel washington movies and the queen latifa series).
Yeah, this one makes a lot more sense if you've seen "The Sting" (which everyone should BTW, minor '70s classic IMO). "Guy From Jeff's Gym" was styled a bit like "The Equalizer" (80s show with Edward Woodward - it's been remade since both in films and on TV).
Yes Community was cancelled by NBC after season 5. Yahoo picked it up for season 6 because they wanted to get into the streaming business. It had Community and 2 or 3 other shows whose names escape me because it was years ago, and they all lost Yahoo million and millions of dollars and it was shut down after one year.
IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, Snuff Box, Toast of London, etc. Matt Berry is incredible. His music is also good. IT Crowd should be reacted to if enough people haven't seen it. I know posting that here means practically nothing, but it's worth a watch.
That is interesting fact about end credits. I remember it being more about the fact the community ending, and that means new shows will replace it. The whole vibe of the season is serene.
Can we get a reaction video of you guys watching The Sting? Classic Newman/Redford film, worth a watch (and would make this whole episode a LOT more enjoyable/relevant).
Yeah, NBC finally cancelled the show after S5, but Yahoo!, trying to get into the streaming game, picked it up. *However...* the app was so laggy and glitchy, that it made it extremely hard to watch _Community._ I don't think I even finished the season while it was on Yahoo! Screen because of that. And the episodes that I did watch were excruciatingly painful to get through because of the technical issues. So, I always had an unfavorable opinion of S6 until I got to actually watch it for real on Hulu or something later on down the road, at which point I ended up loving it. After seasons 3, 2 and 1 (in that order), S6 might be my fourth favorite season now?🤔¯\(°_o)/¯
It's true that this season feels more "experimental", but I love that so much. Usually shows as they go on they play it safe as they settle into a formula, which is why most likely the first season is the one that feels out there, not the last one. So it's refreshing to see a show kinda lose its mind on the last season in the best way possible, just not being afraid of getting weird.
Young America Like a teenager exploring life. 1900 s alcohol, prostitution , grifters was a daily thing. THE STING. A movie with Robert Redford. Clue kinda . Who , what did it. Music is the style of the time. Yes, all of you need to review the movie. Sequel .
This episode has always been one of my least favorite episodes. It just never felt right. It wasn't until today that I realized how much that piano music killed the tone of this episode. I know it's part of the homage, but it zaps all the humor from the episode. I now want to rewatch this episode with regular music to see how it feels then.

7:15 Love Annie sticking up for Britta lol. "You can't expel Britta, she's been here six years. Three more, and she'll have her two-year degree!"
Annie didn't even Britta the math on that one
The ragtime piano, transitions, and drawn title cards are all referencing "The Sting"
Loved Community and White Collar for doing a The Sting episode. It’s one of my favorite movies and nobody knows about it 🥺
Right! Incredible movie. I'm such a nerd I have the soundtrack. Would love to see them do a reaction to that movie
Before What We Do In The Shadows, Matthew Berry was mostly known for The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, 2 British tv classics. He's also the voice of a robot in the upcoming Fallout tv show.
i'm so glad What We Do in the Shadows became successful, the man deserves wider fame than just his British shows.
Matt Berry is a gift from the gods.
Speaking of being the voice of a robot, he voiced the Torture Droid in Book of Boba Fett.
He was also the prince who was turned into a pig in Disenchantment.
I'd love for them to watch Darkplace, it's one of the funniest and most underrated shows ever
You know the movie they mentioned several times and watched, The Sting? The music and title cards are a reference to that.
How can someone not recognise the music from The Sting??
By having never seen The Sting?

THE STING is, regardless of Elroy Patashnik's opinion, one of the best films of the 1970s - it won Best Picture for a reason... :)
Every line Matt Berry speaks in anything is always pronounced to perfection. Shows he's had a prominent role in other than WWDITS:

I hope to god that they get the whole crew together to watch What We Do In The Shadows.
Each week I hope I see the 1x1 thumbnail, not yet though 😢
Yes 😂
Love Matt Berry. He has some of the most iconic line deliveries in tv ever
"You and he were......buddies, weren't you?"
That's the mother, Rick!
"faaatttthhheeeeerrrrrrr!!"
Also he is from Tucson, Arizoniaa
especially in NEW YORK CITAAAAAAAY
The Sting is an awesome movie starring Robert Redford. I would love a movie reaction!! I had to watch this in high school and I fell in love with it.
Watching a The Sting parody without knowing The Sting exists... Obviosly not ideal.. :D
Defo . Went way over there heads . Millennials 😂
Ryan Ridley isn't just The Guy From Jeff's Gym, he's also a writer for Community and Rick & Morty, as well as being a producer and doing voices on Rick & Morty.

I'm not gonna lie. I have no memory of this episode and I've seen all six seasons of Community twice through.
I find it a pretty forgettable episode, to be honest.
FYI: Aaron was talking about The IT Crowd when he talked about a series with Matt Berry that he only appears in after the first season.
The style of the Community episode is based on The Sting, that's why they referenced it in the episode. I'm surprised you guys hadn't even heard of it
I haven’t seen it myself yet, but I think the episode references «The Sting»
Yep I watched it recently. The hand drawn fades and the music. Good movie. Great cast.
So eric hasn't seen IT Crowd yet. I'm definitely putting that as a recommendation.
You want to kill him?
Did you try turning it off and on again?
The green ball is from Snooker. The music and scene transitions are from The String.
Matchstick Men is a fantastic, underrated Nic Cage and Sam Rockwell movie. Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
the song is the entertainer and it was used in the 1973 movie the sting the movie mentioned in the episode about a grift.
The style of the episode is based on The Sting itself and the ridiculousness of it is because Dan Harmon has a famous dislike of of grifting/heist movies and how over the top they can be
Yeah. Shitted all over them in that Rick and Morty ep.
You guys should watch The Sting. It’s actually a really good movie, but you need to be patient and pay attention to what’s happening. I don’t know if the characters finding the movie boring represents Dan Harmon’s views on The Sting, but I find it funny nonetheless.
I think you would enjoy reacting to The Sting. It stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford after they made Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
They haven't seen IT Crowd? Please put it on the list
The Work Outing episode is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen.
It seems Aaron has. Pretty sure that's what he was referencing.
It’s up to them obviously but I’d rather they reacted to things that weren’t written by legitimately evil people tbh
nobody should invite debates about that show's insane creator into their comment section
Clearly, The Sting should be watched soon. The music is from that movie, the still pictures in between the shots is an homage to the movie as well. Robert Redford, Paul Newman and several others are in it.
cant believe the british jack black was in this
At this point, I'm tempted to try and convince people to vote for The Cape, just so the others can finally watch it and Aaron can have vindication. And I haven't even watched it myself!
Annie looks so beautiful in that shirt and trousers ngl
9:16 THE EQUALIZER, the original
Peacock is doing the movie and all the episodes are now on Peacock!
Also still available on Hulu.
the end scene is spoofing the equalizer (the original not Queen Latifah or the movies)
I can't wait for the day that what we do in the shadows finally wins the poll
The spinoff final shot is a reference to the original Equalizer series from the 90’s with Edward Woodward (which was remade as the denzel washington movies and the queen latifa series).
Yeah, this one makes a lot more sense if you've seen "The Sting" (which everyone should BTW, minor '70s classic IMO). "Guy From Jeff's Gym" was styled a bit like "The Equalizer" (80s show with Edward Woodward - it's been remade since both in films and on TV).
I foresee reactions to The Sting, Matchstick Men, The Cape, The Equalizer, The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Dark Place.
You guys should watch THE STING
Lol, yall have never seen "The Sting" ? Thats what this is based off of. The entertainer is the song by scott joplin utilized heavily in the movie.
The thing I knew matt perry from was the it crowd growing up and random uk ads too
I wish someone would react to Garth Marenghis Dark Place.😂
You guys need to watch more films 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
omg. I forgot he was in this. Now i want Blind wave and me and everyone frankly to watch IT again
I started watching Fallout. I saw Matt Berry in episode one and went "HEY! It's a grifting teacher!"
HOT DOGS HOT DOGS HOT DOGS HOT DOGS
The "spinoff" trailer at the end seems very inspired by "Streethawk" (kind of a Knight Rider on a motor bike ;) )
Similar aesthetic but no, it's The Equaliser with Edward Woodward from the 80s.
Toast of London, IT Crowd and Snuff Box are all great.
Need to watch the IT Crowd. Berry is in that later on in the series but over all it is great.
That's the series Aaron was talking about.
You guys should definitely watch The Sting. Elroy is wrong. It’s a classic.
I love S6 but I always skip this episode. I don't think I skip any other non-S4 episode
Please watch The Sting. It’s amazing. I don’t care what Elroy says
The ragtime music is the academy award winning theme from The Sting. This whole episode was a homage to The Sting.
The theme didn't win an academy Award, the score did. The theme was a previously existing song "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin.
That is interesting fact about end credits. I remember it being more about the fact the community ending, and that means new shows will replace it. The whole vibe of the season is serene.
Ok. You have to now watch and review “The Sting”.
me, any time matt berry walks into a room: “FATHERRRRRRRRR”
Ryan Ridley is a buddy of Dan Harmon, check out how many Rick and Morty characters is Ridley given his voice to 🙃
I angrily look forward to your reaction to "The Sting".
"I owed him my life... he agreed."
You need to add The Sting to your list of movies to watch.
Can we get a reaction video of you guys watching The Sting? Classic Newman/Redford film, worth a watch (and would make this whole episode a LOT more enjoyable/relevant).
In case literally ever comment hasn't already enforced this idea, you should definitely watch The Sting :) It's a oldie but a classic!
Yeah, NBC finally cancelled the show after S5, but Yahoo!, trying to get into the streaming game, picked it up. *However...* the app was so laggy and glitchy, that it made it extremely hard to watch _Community._ I don't think I even finished the season while it was on Yahoo! Loved your reaction as always💗
You should check out society of the snow, i would love to hear what you have to say about that one
Community Season 6 was on Yahoo Streaming for their last season and then a year later Yahoo Streaming shutdown and blamed Community for it's failure
Matt berry is in the it crowd.
YES!! I love this one, Matt Berry is so damn funny.
At least u guys got a few episodes left
One of my favorite episodes just because of Matt Berry
Now you gotta react to the film "The Sting"
Looks like y’all need to watch The Sting💀
It's true that this season feels more "experimental", but I love that so much. PLEASE GOD WATCH WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS PLEASE THE GRIFTER TEACHER IS IN IT AND ITS SO HILARIOUS PLEASE GOD
Y’all need to see the British ‘IT crowd’ then, mat berry is so good in that as well as the rest of the cast.
You need to watch the sting- great movie- all the references you didn’t understand
The Sting for a movie reaction it seems
The moral is something like the only real grift is The Honeypot.. or the main character wins.
U know there is a community peacock movie coming sometime this year
Community was recently added to Peacock streaming
Despite what this episode would have you believe, The Sting is actually a really enjoyable movie.
Matthew Berry will always be the dude form It Crowd to me
Ok, wait. Definitely watch The IT Crowd.
The final season was on yahoo tv
5:11 😢
Ouch!
Arghhhhhh it’s not knight rider it’s a parody of the equaliser series 😂
Young America
Like a teenager exploring life.
1900 s alcohol, prostitution , grifters was a daily thing.
THE STING. A movie with Robert Redford. Clue kinda .
Who , what did it.
Music is the style of the time.
Yes, all of you need to review the movie.
Sequel .
Ryan Ridley. You’d recognize him if you checked what else he’s on and associated with. It’s community adjacent
Dear gawd - have you guys not watched "The IT Crowd"???? How can you not know Matt Berry from that, at least....
the spin offs are jokes on the shows their network kept making and renewing while cancelling community
Gotta say, I’d rather have the reaction delayed than have no Calvin
While this episode may be a bit forgettable it's also a lot of fun.
IT crowd Reactions happening ?

Watching this episode for the first time I had no idea what griffting was. Still kinda don't
Should we all become grifters together? Sh - should we all become grifters - should we - should all become grifters together? should we should
Well, if it isn't Randy Daytona...
Can any of the patron tell me if they ever had Modern Family in their polls?
Nice
Too bad Calvin wasn't here
