Xperia PRO I :: The New Photography Smartphone

- Sony has announced the Xperia PRO-I - the first mainstream phone to feature a 1 inch sensor. In fact, its the same sensor found in the RX100-IV. With native video capture up to 120 fps at 4k, and dual 2.0 and 4.0 aperture for photography and video, this just might be the most camera centric smartphone on the market today.

I've gotten a lot of comments about the sensor size. Before I used the phone I had a 1 on 1 briefing with a technical manager with Sony. I wasn't told anything about the lens only using 60% of the sensor. I wanted to pin this here as there was no intention on my part to be misleading. That being said - I still stand behind everything in this preview and the image files do look fabulous. When I do a full review I will address this.
Ted, will you expound in the next video the use case for this phone over traditional cameras at this price point? The additional (likely costly) selfie/vlog rig is even less obvious over a camera with a flippy screen. Thank you.
Wack! For that high price and still with that ugly fixed battery compartment? Stick with a real camera, folks!
@jthomas5o1 An actual camera maybe?
Well, all you said about low light performance and bokeh is lie. Because even iPhone 13 Pro camera has a better bokeh and low light performance simply because its lens gather more light. I'm just curious (if you understand something in photography) how could you explain this silly sensor transformation from 20 Mp in Sony RX100 to 12 Mp in Xperia PRO-I? And didn't you see that huge difference in lenses between RX100 and Pro-I? How in the world small lens of Xperia could cover whole 1" sensor?
@@Alex-fk3ni It can't. I think the lens only covers 60% of the sensor!

@@Alex-fk3ni i was talking about the software, but you found something, big brain
Just a heads up, this camera can be better than the pixel 6/iphone 13. You have to treat it like an actual camera though, otherwise the computational photography from the other phone makers wipes the floor with this phone. In other words, you have to know how to bracket and merge images, you have to know how to use an actual Mirrorless/DSLR
The phone is in an awkward position.it tries to compete with phone but someone buying a phone only cares about easy photos on auto mode.and lets be honest this phone is not close to replacing a camera and at that price you can get a flagship phone and a midrange camera.the idea is nice but considering the options out there its hard to choose this

You didn't cover something very important. The camera doesn't use the full 1 inch sensor, just a smaller portion of it... to then say it is a 1inch camera is very misleading without adding that important information.

Does he even breathe while speaking?
Sony is clearly tricking us by calling the sensor "type 1", but in their marketing material they mention the word inch not even once, except for their display size. The Phone has 12 MP and each pixel is 2.4qm. A Sony RX100 or ZV1 has 20 MP while the pixels are the same size. Doesn't it sound kinda fishy? For comparison, phones like the Samsung S21 Ultra have 12 MP in its pixel-binned mode, while a binned pixel is 2.4qm big. That device's sensor size is about 1/1.3 inch. So the Sony Xperia Pro-i's sensor should be also about the same size.
There is crop to avoid module to be too large.
Lens is about 19mm ..
Panasonic actually had the CM1 already a few years ago with a 1" sensor and a Leica (design) 28mm equivalent lens. The phone part was so-so, but the camera was great! (another Leica phone with 1" sensor was also released a few months ago - in Asia only - and so this Xperia is certainly not the first one. Having said that, this one looks amazing!
I think they meant the first phone with PDAF on a 1" sensor.
Considering the RX100 VII is $1200, the Xperia Pro-I with normal high-end phone features is pretty reasonable for an additional $600.
But it's far from the reall performance of a rx100 vii with its 24-200mm lens coverage! Also using the full whith of the sensor instead of only 60% of it.
Wait this phone is $2000😂☠️
@@jcap8391 🤣🤣🤣my thought exactly.i can get an iphone 13 pro max and a camera😅🤦🏾♂️

I was so excited until the price tag.
You could buy a rx100 Iv and a decent phone and still have 700 dollars left.
That’s too much
It is for rich people who wants camera and phone together
So how do you justify iPhone and galaxy top model prices.
There is barely 200 to 300 dollar difference. And this model offers way more camera features.
What about galaxy fold price. 😂😂
@@akhilesh718 they are for flexing
Lmao, it's not for casual user.
@@akhilesh718 iPhones are easy to use point and shoot with this one you won’t get the best results by doing that.
But a pro how takes time to take picture would pic a camera and not this phone
The big story is of course the 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor from the RX100 VII. However, in order to keep the phone small, Sony has designed a lens that can't project an image circle large enough to cover the entire area of the 1" sensor. That's why, instead of 20MP images, as you'd get from the RX100 VII camera, you get 12MP images. But this has a broader implication: the combination of a slower F2 lens (than many of its smartphone peers) and a sensor that's not quite as big as a 1"-type sensor means the image quality might not meet the initial expectations you might have when you think 'smartphone with RX100 sensor'. In fact, if you consider just the area used for 12MP stills, it has roughly a 12mm diagonal and 70mm2 sensor surface area: closer to the specs of a 1/1.31" sensor (such as the one in the Google Pixel 6).
I felt as though i was in a lost world when he said 125GB of RAM.
Wow, this phone sound so perfect, its also have microsd slot n headphone jack that very rare on now day phones
yeah and if it feels too expensive you can check the rest of Xperia lineup
I'd love to be able to shoot with my phone, but I think phones have gone crazy with the prices to a point where it's almost cheaper to get a Sony a7III than a phone...So for me, for photography, does not make sense to spend that much on a phone when you can get a full frame camera for the same price. I can't understand how a phone can cost almost 2K $.
Well this phone is from their PRO lineup which is different than let's say Apple's. When Sony uses the name Pro it really means it is meant for professionals. This phone for vloggers and the previous pro was meant as an accessory for other Alpha cameras as a camera monitor and 5G modem. If you'd like more affordable phone with same features, check Xperia 1 III or 5 III, these cost like your common flagship phone but it's true that they don't have an 1 inch sensor. Btw Phones and cameras have totally different use cases, makes no sense to compare them like that.
@@MrMozkoZrout I know this, I´m just saying that as a camera is not as good as what you can get for the price, and as a phone, to me, is really expensive...so I could not justify getting one. I´d love to be able to carry a computer in my pocket that takes decent photos, but 2K...Again, just me, I use the phone for very basic tasks (e-mail and social media) and for photography.
@@DavidCJPhotography yes I understand you. I was in market for a new phone recently and I also wouldn't spend this much money on a phone even tho I'd love that camera capability. A 1-inch sensor and accompanying software are indeed fantastic features... for a phone. But in any other context I would laugh myself out the door of the shop at the idea of spending so much dosh on a fixed lens camera with that kind of limitation, let alone on a phone that's going to be completely outdated (and probably not even supported) in a couple of years' time. For $1.8k I can get a decent APS-C body and a suite of lenses.
and if you buy used you could get full frame + lenses for that price. it's so funny to see all these photography channels losing their minds over this phone.
Try making a phone call on your APS-C body……….

It is damn expensive... I will buy a sony rx100 vii for 1300 usd and keep my phone for watching your videos...
All I'm going to say is the Xperia 1 II came out just over a year and a half ago, and carried a hefty price tag for what it was. I have no issues with Sony making two updates to the hardware since then, but I sincerely hope they plan to port that new camera app to the older phones, because there is no good reason those shouldn't have had a better base app. The single most frustrating thing for me was not cinema pro, but that the shutter button launcher couldn't launch it. So I was stuck with the crappy base camera app and zero ability to take advantage of the advance camera features for video with out taking a significantly longer time getting into the pro app. To summarize again one had crappy video in an instant or a great video in under a minute. I want that new app, but refuse to spend $1800 on a new phone when my existing phone still functions fantastically outside of what I spent the extra money on it for.
Sell it and upgrade to what your heart desires. I am glad i waited and not caved into the initial xperia 1 ii. Selfie camera put me off. Glad it did. Cos now this phone is whole other ball game. Plus your one is losing value fast
@@EdoHDpro No offense, but that response totally missed the point. While I'm happy for anyone who gets any phone at any time that fits their needs/desires the point of my post was that the software that easily should run on any of the older Xperia 1 models, even the first one, has not been made available to these older Xperia models. The fact Sony has not released a software update to add this software is a huge negative for them. Why? Because people bought this top of the line phone with the hardware it has knowing the software could be updated, but when a company fails to upgrade the software that represents the core marketing point of the whole phone, it disrespects their users. Thus I will not buy or upgrade my existing phone to any future Sony phone if this kind of issue doesn't get satisfactorily resolved.
At nearly $2k I have no use for this chatchkee and would put that money toward a new full frame mirrorless body
Kind of shows phones are nowhere near capable of competing with real cameras. The ergonomics alone are enough to keep me from filming or taking pictures with phones.
But you just get a camera with it. With this device you also get a full flagship smartphone

Can the ZV-e10 stream 1080p60 8 Mb/s to Twitch by itself? or stream 18 Mb/s to YT? NO, you would need more equipment for that, this can be an all-in-one approach for live streaming on the go...

I think people who are complaining about the price miss the point of this. I'm not saying it's cheap by any means, but this is an all in one solution for mobile creators. You have a very capable camera from both a hardware and software perspective. Your able to edit those photos and videos on the same device and then share them by whatever platform you are using anywhere in the world long as you have a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Yes you can buy that little Sony vlogging camera or something and another phone. How do you move that content effectively to the phone? Or do you wait to get home and put the footage on a computer now you're well over that 1800 mark when you factor that in. This isn't a device for everyone and that's fine. I hope we continue to see improvements in this space that will trickle down to the more mainstream lines later on
But the camera isn't actually any better than other high end phones... The phone uses a 12mp crop of the 20mp 1" sensor, meaning it's actual imaging area is about the same as a 1/1.3" sensor.
I wouldn't have minded if they made it a little bit thicker to cover the camera bump while incorporating a 5000 to 6000mah battery

LG had manual video options years ago shame they were ahead of their time just no one was looking. Props to Sony for finally bringing imaging on a serious level to the Phones. They need to bring back the cybershot brand and zenon flash.
LG were the only ones apart from Sony who were doing things differently, it's shame they stopped. They made a big mistake that Sony didn't tho and that is consistency. Ever since Sony rebooted their lineup, they had lazer focused vision of what their phones are supposed to be and they stuck with it and kept improving on it no matter how much other people criticised them for not being accessible for the masses. LG sadly were constantly trying new and trully interesting ideas but they never stuck with anything and always abandoned the tech they put into their phones. It was especially a pitty with their modular phones, that could have been a revolution if it got improved and established.

They've been doing this for years - trying to convince users that their smartphones have the best quality, but in reality it falls behind by a lot. Google Pixel/iPhones/Samsung Galaxy are still the top three for photos, with the iPhones being the best for video. Even the samples in this video don't look anything crazy, the images might be cleaner but the post processing is so undeveloped, compared to the other three brands.

Wouldn’t compare it with an rx100 vii but a ZV1 which can be bought for 600-700 bucks and it still doesn’t have the one inch sensor at just one focal length, but across the entire range.
Add to that, that the 1 inch sensor is cropped to around 1/1.3 inch (60% of the area of an one inch) and the lack of space for a decent optic and it just stops making any sense at all.

They should have made rx100 VIII instead with 4k 60/120p. Whatever they calls this is still just a phone.
