    Wow! That was amazing to watch. Japantown looks almost the same today in 2020. Soko Hardware at 5:12 looks exactly the same! I remember San Francisco in the 80s. Seems so different yet there are parts that somewhat stood still through time (Japantown and parts of Chinatown). That PanAm airline sign in the window in Japantown was awesome. Life was chill back then. Lastly, the white pants! Reminds me of my grandpa, and was the thing to wear back in those days. (Fun Fact: The Peace Pagoda at 5:16 was designed by Yoshiro Taniguchi)

    Japan Center and Miyako Hotel look virtually the same in 2018, almost 40 years later.

    That was fun! I'm old enough to remember when the city looked like that. Time flies.

    2:40 The South San Francisco sign on the hillside is visible from my house. In 1980 we visited SF now and then, nice to see how it looked.
    3:36 Aw, it kills me to see Candlestick Park. All gone now. Sure it was a windy old wreck, but it was OUR windy old wreck.

    The 80's was a time where you can raise a family in San Francisco, now people are moving out of $6000/month apartments to live out of state (COVID-19).

    That old footage of Japantown is SO COOL!! It brings back some of my best childhood memories. It still looks very similar structurally, but it has changed a hell of a lot in just about every other way. You can totally see that if you look closely here.

    Thats Japantown... At 5: 32 that walkway... I remember that, and right beyond those doors..I remember a restaurant, and right to its left an electronics store with all-glass walls that sold Beta vision VCR's along with TV's and answering machines... Or something like that... And a Japanese grocery store that was on a hill.... I remember bits and pieces of it... My family were closer tied to Japantown in San Jose so most of memories are of that... In 1980.. :)

    Woah i didn’t know there were no railings between the people and the cars back in the 80’s,it’s so interesting how different at that time compared to today!

      Jake Smith $175, even factoring in inflation, a regular person could still afford to live in the city. That might be like $500 today.

      @andytaylor5476 5 лет назад +3

      You could not get a one bedroom apartment that cheap ($175.00) in 1980!

    • @edwardmiessner6502
      @edwardmiessner6502 4 года назад +1

      @@andytaylor5476 no but I bet you could get one for $500 a month. That would be like $1500 today. Not cheap but affordable for a professional not like the $3900 market rent rates today.

      I don't really think of 1980 as a long time ago, but that's probably because I spend a lot of my time reading history books about things that were happening hundreds of years ago.
