    FAQs
    1. What color is the blue paint?
    Glidden Diamond semi gloss. (10dd 11/126) Americans cup (the Dark Blue)
    2. Is it anchored? No - I could, but it's so heavy even pushing against it with most of my weight and strength won't move it at all
    3. Why no electrical? We wanted to have the island in the kitchen and use it before we decide to add electrical to it
    4. How do I open appliances? There is ample room on all sides to open things - nothing is hindered or blocked
    5. Why Ryobi? Because it's affordable.
    6. Is it sponsored by Ryobi? Do I ever say that in the video...
    What color is the paint:

    For a Rookie you did a great job. What I really appreciate is, you did what you could within your skillset, planned a lot, took some reasonable advice (from the father in law,) and tried your hand at this. I would have bought the butcher block too! We've got a great lumberyard here in the LA area (Ganahl Lumber) who does similar builds (in Corona and Anaheim at their mill locations) for reasonable prices. Keep going. You'll learn more, the more you do! Don't let the trolls get you down. They're jealous.

    Thank you so much for the information my friend! My fiancé and I will be purchasing our first house in a year, and most houses being sold these days have a small kitchen or not enough counter space. Our first project will be to build an island with outlets! Large kitchens are very underrated. I hope you don't mind us borrowing your idea and process! Good work btw! Looks great!

    Great job. I grew up in a professional cabinet shop, and was super impressed with your improvisation on the raised panels; I would never have thought to do them with a router that way, but I was spoiled by having top of the line tools. However, now just doing wood working as a hobby and not having a ton of tools, I was really inspired by your work. Thanks for sharing!

      @workshop_edits  6 лет назад +3

      I wouldn't say I am low on experience - I have a general set of knowledge on how to do most woodworking things - but executionally it can be daunting. One step at a time with lots of research in between. Measure twice, test your cuts on scraps, measure again, then make your cuts!

    You know I'm coming around on this whole pocket screw thing. It's pretty impressive that you can build basically any shape with a few cuts and some inexpensive tools.
    Project looks great! Btw a 50/50 mix of mineral oil and beeswax makes a great coating for butcher block. You might even save some money vs. MinWax!

    I just did the same thing, but I took the easy route. I used prefab cabinets, with an old table top with glass as the countertop. I had built a butcher block top, but the table and glass is just so much easier lol

      I wanted to use pre-fab too but honestly my work is not so precise (yet) so I was worried about ordering cabinets that might not fit.

    Nice build. It's always great to see other DIY'ers doing good projects without all the fanciest tools. When it comes to pocket holes, I've found glue is not necessary. I've done many face frames and various other projects without glue and they've stood the test of time. I've even done some testing and concluded the same thing. Yes, the glue makes it stronger, but the joints are easily strong enough without so you can save yourself a bunch of time in assembly. I'm all about the practical. Keep building!

    Very nice job...I just got done building one...I got the idea from Tom Silva from this “Old House”...He used two kitchen cabinets back to back with a butcher block top... I made mine a bit different...It was cheaper to build it from a 4x8 sheet of birch...The most expensive part was buying the birch “butcher-block “ top...It came out very nice...Again,,,nice job...Oh yeah,,, the “ pocket screw” jig works very well...I use it often...

    Was cringing on the barefoot and I would have refurbished pallets with a planer and jointer. It's a beautiful build but I would just look at the butcher block top and it would drive me crazy!! It looks great!!

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  6 лет назад +1

      I don’t know if I understand your comment - you would use pallet wood as your kitchen counter top instead of clean hardwoods? That’s kind of disgusting and would take weeks to break down, mill, and process

    • @kirkbrindley1951
      @kirkbrindley1951 6 лет назад

      The Cutting Bored actually it’s some of the nicest finish you can get and the set up process would take you a weekend to prep the boards and a day of glue and set up
      I think you did an amazing job and as someone who has had to buy a piece like that to expedite the work, I am speaking for myself when I say I always tend to go back and put my own touch on it cause it drives me nuts to know it’s not my work.
      Also I mentioned the pallet wood cause of the cost factor. Now that means you have to have access to a planer and jointer as well but you can’t get much more cost effective than free

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  6 лет назад +1

      @@kirkbrindley1951 I guess to each their own - right? I think pallet wood is great, but I don't personally thing old gross wood has it's place in the kitchen as an eating surface. I think the labor and time to source, break down wood for often very little useable material, and then being the process of building also makes it just terribly not worth it - and I'm saying that in the context of a 15 square foot counter top - that is a TON of pallet wood.

    Awesome build. I did notice when you pullout the garbage door that it did not pull out nicely. So thank you for letting us know you got better quality glide bars for it. I have been in the process of designing my kitchen cabinets with pullouts so I will definitely keep in mind which glide bars are appropriate for which use. P.S. I enjoyed your humour as well. Bravo 👏

    I went the same route, built the island as one large piece and assembled in place to save some money on lumber . Ended up taking it all out and built four individual cabinets. Ended up being a lot easier to move around

    Great job! I’m in the process of putting a walnut butcher block Island in my kitchen also. I am going to cheat and not only buy the ready made top, but also buy stock cabinets for the carcass and then dress up the back and sides. I priced out the ready built and I can not build it myself cheaper. I built my own bath room vanities so I know I could do it, but it can take a lot of time and I want this done right away.

    Great build and a definite future project for me. Way bigger than anything I've built so far and I definitely can understand the intimidation of the task. One thing I might suggest doing differently next time, for the drawer/door fronts is either 1) router the edges prior to glue up and cut 45 degree angles, or 2) use small quarter round trim pieces instead of routing edges. I've seen other woodworkers use these methods and both make an aesthetically pleasing front and a great way to avoid those rounded inside corners.
