My wife and I are truck campers. We are retiring in a few years and my goal is to replace our 20 year old cheap camper with something I build. It won't be as cool as yours but it will be fun. Thanks for the inspiration!
Congratulations on nearing retirement! Building a camper that suits your specific needs is definitely the way to go if you plan to use it often. We look forwarding to following along on your build!
I own a Lance truck camper. A big model and similar to yours. Your project is not only amazing, but there are many, many aspects of your built that are way better and superior than the factory built models. I would buy yours before a Lance or Arctic Fox model without thinking about it. Seriously. Watching from Puerto Rico. Subscribed!
I noticed Riley installed the sink with the drain on the front, then when seen from below it was suddenly in the back! Way to sneak that shot past the censors! lol. Great channel!
Cortenay the sun is shining up here in New Westminster, B.C. Canada and it will be cloudy with sun for the next few days then it will be super Hot Weather, who knows when we will get rain as we need it in the worst way. Peter
ebay has chinese diesel water heaters for about $350, they look to be all the same design. this way you don't heat up the cabin space at the same time with a combo air and water diesel heater. plus it heats it 2-3 times faster than your truck engine. I think it comes with a small insulated tank to hold a small amount of water like your house water heater tank, but I would build or source a bigger holding insulated tank. I think you guys would like it better because it heats it way faster. theirs also a mod where you use a car water manifold to convert your air diesel heater to a water heater, I'd go with the $350 water only one
I am no expert but think you should use a heat exchanger. When you are using an auxiliary heater to heat your engine there is no risk with a leak other than a mess. When you are using engine heat to heat your water for your sink and have a leak you could be drinking engine coolant. You may say you will only install non-glycol based coolant but how about fuel or oil leaking into the coolant fluid. Using a heat exchange gives you more control over what is circulating inside your water heater. Nice build!
You make a valid point! I don't think we'll have an issue with leaks in the heat exchanger that is built into the water heater. It is made by Whale, a reputable marine brand. However we will keep an eye on the coolant levels as a safety precaution. Adding a second heat exchanger and second coolant loop was proving more complicated (lack of space) than we were willing to deal with. So far this system is working great. Thanks for following our build!
We are really enjoying your videos. I (Teresa) especially appreciate when sometimes things don't go exactly as planned (and you share it). For a "new to building" person like me, it allows me to realize that it's ok to still try stuff. Even when things don't go as planned, we are still making progress and having fun. Thank you! (Teresa)
I am so very impressed! I am just starting the build on a perfect 2008 Ram 2500 Laramie. The truck is so very ready and has had some good suspension and engine work to get ready. This was perfect timing since I want to work on the Sprinter Camper I just bought next. Thank you both for an amazing view of how it would be if I was about 10X more skilled. My build will be cool on the Best truck ever, but you two are the masters.
@Courtney Casey . Hi from Australia, are you guys going to video your travels please say yes. I think your fans would definitely enjoy because you are so pleasant to watch.
Excellent job Yall! Very impressed with the progress. I like how clean and innovative this build is going. Looks like every thing yall have added will be very user friendly! Great Job! The "Touch" Water facet was a nice touch! (Pun intended ) Haha
You Guys are incredible! If you need more clearance they make a even more compact basket strainer for your sink that will save a couple of more inches. Keep up the amazing work. You rock!
Motorhome has same feature that heats with metal lines , love it when i show up where i am going and water is hot, pretty cool. Great work on the camper, first class!
I'm really surprised the engine water pump was able to push coolant all the way back to the water heater then back to the engine without a boost water pump for the coolant. Awesome build!
Hey guys! Been keeping up with your build and I really enjoy the videos! I think if you guys slowed the pace of the videos they would deliver even more value. I think most of your videos are around 10/12 minutes.. even extending that to 15/17 would allow for more detail to be shown. Just my two cents.. you guys have such an attention to detail it would be cool to see more!
It is hard to find the time to make even 10 minute videos right now as we are pushing hard to hit the road in time for plenty of snow skiing. We have plans to do some much more detailed videos once we hit the road! Thanks for watching and following along with us!
Really good thing that you decided not to use that S trap, They are illegal in home installations because it allows for a siphon effect when you use it so that it actually drains the P-trap which will then allow gases into the home.
Thanks so much for subscribing and following along! You can shop some of our favorites here: www.trailtestedmfg.com/shop We do have plan to put together a comprehensive build list once we hit the road.
Another great video. Coming along nicely, you guys should be ready to hit the trails shortly. Btw you guys got a shout out from another youtuber I follow “RV DIY by TITO” Happy New Year guys.
Once this camper is built detailed maintenance and upgrade videos from design to implementation. So far, you guys are going above and beyond in my opinion.
Awesome job guys, quick question though as you now have added more coolant and more importantly pipes / distance to your engine cooling system will you be installing an aux water pump for the engine cooling system? It might be worth looking into if not. Keep up the awesome work. 🍻🤘
Hi James! Our lines are pulling from the heater circuit, not the engine cooling circuit. The heater loop and engine loop are in parallel, not series. So we shouldn't see any adverse effects on engine cooling, but we will keep you all updates. (As of now it appears to working just fine). For reference we added about .5 gallon of volume to the system.
@@AmbitionStrikes awesome thanks for the information. Did not know it had two different systems on it (makes sense though) very cool it’s only added half a gallon or so of extra fluid. Looking forward to your next video 🍻😀
@@AmbitionStrikes I’ve mentioned your channel on other similar channels. People are always looking for good quality & amazing channels. Happy New Years from Texas.
Love the build. Keep up the awesome content.... I do have a slight concern about the size of the drain on the P Trap that you installed. Will it be a slow drain? I recently installed the HepvO waterless trap on both the shower and vanity in my travel trailer. It uses 1.5” thin wall PVC just like in the house kitchen sink, so should drain easily... I say should because I haven’t actually tested it yet. It my also save you another inch or so for better clearance to your bikes.
As an old guy who has done tons of fabricating, I am really impressed with this build. I have only seen one miss step so far and it's not that big of a deal. (Exhaust fan placement.) I can only hope that you build a solar system correctly. (Unlike every youtuber). Here are some of the mistakes I see all the time. Use of the wrong TYPE of wire. Please use Automotive grade wiring (can withstand vibration without breaking down over time) instead of household grade wiring. Ever circuit should be fused including solar panels and battery protection. I can't stress this enough: There is no such thing as a catastrophic fuse, systems with this design are not electrically protected!!!! I recommend if you are going to use an inverter over 1000 watts, design your system for 24volt operation. I wish you the best of luck! Oh also a little RTV on the rubber hose conections will stop leaks in the future.
Hi Glen! Thanks for following our build! We placed the vent fan over our bed to help control humidity while winter camping (keep heater on and vent slightly open). Where would you rather see it placed? We are using marine grade wire for all our circuits. It has a tough UV stable jacket, flexible stranded wires, and the wires are tinned to make them even more corrosion resistant than automotive wire. The battery cables are 2/0 "welding cable" and very high quality. All battery cable connections are made using a hydraulic crimper for a secure connection. We are using a Blue Sea circuit protection in all necessary locations. A 48v DC system was considered but ultimately we decided to stick to 12v. Stay tuned for a future video where we dive into our electrical system in detail!
@@AmbitionStrikes On my van Build I placed a smaller 6 inch fan on the highest point on the side of the van. My roof is covered with solar panels no room for a fan. I don't think it matters where you place the fan (as far as air flow)as long as it is the highest point and you can reach it.
Progress! I've found the harder a plumbing joint is to access the more likely it is to leak. Just wondering- why did you decide to forego the accumulator tank? Happy New Year !
Fact! Riley spent hours fixing the leak to the water heater. The accumulator tank is installed in the bench seat area next to the water tank and works great!
Will you guys only have hot water while the truck is running? Curious what you will do if you are camped somewhere for an extended amount of time and don't need the truck running.
Great work on the camper and videos, I know your running that h2o heaters electric element through your inverter. Will your batteries actually power that when your camped in one spot for a couple days?
We actually just tested it today! It takes about 80aH to heat the tank to about 120 degrees, but that should then hold shower temp for about 24 hours. Right now that would use about 25% of our batteries capacity but once we have solar we should be able to recoup that! The other option is just to idle the truck for an hour which will give us hot water and charge the batteries!
I have a pretty big concern, and would feel like a jerk if you had a problem down the road and I didn't say anything when I had the chance. All your electrical and plumbing wires and hoses are passing through the sharp aluminum holes you are cutting without any kind of grommet or something to protect the hoses and wires from abrasion while driving down the road. I am super impressed by the quality of the build other than that. Can't wait to see it after a lift and tire install.
Thanks for taking the time to voice your concern! Any electrical or lines were are concerned about actually do have grommets! The coolants hoses and sink drain are in contact with the thick layer of plywood, not the aluminum so we do not have any concerns there. (They come through the aluminum skinned floor but the body of the hose itself is surrounded and held in place by the plywood, so it can not rub).
@@AmbitionStrikes Not criticizing, but the lines should only chafe against like material, even smooth sanded plywood will abrade the lines, especially with a diesel powered vehicle. is your truck decile? i have the 5.7 hemi, and just sank $6k into it. my engine has a not uncommon cam/lifter failure. you can see a lot of youtube vids on it. many think idiling doesnt pump enough oil to the roller lifters. i like that exchanger system though! but for me its just more stuff to winterize. your trips are probably gonna be longer, but my trips are short and inbetween :)
Happy New Year to you as well! The water heater can keep water hot for up to 24 hours but there is also a backup electric heating element we can use to heat the water.
ive seen alot of rv youtube shows and your sink if gushing water, most rvs the water trikles out, seems like youll go through all ur water supply quickly
The kitchen faucet will definitely not be used on full blast when we don't have access to a hose! It is a touch faucet so you can get it set to a flow and temperature you like and just leave it set to that.
Throw away Teflon tape! Unpredictable. Also, there are a lot better options today than old fashion plumbers putty. Approximately where are you located? Your weather is a clue, but a lot of places fit your weather.
Rileys words "I'm never using that stuff again! Unless it's for an air compressor because then I don't care if it leaks... 😂 " We're located on the central coast of California! (for now...)
I do a far amount of plumbing as it is part of my job. I have found that a quality grade of silicone caulk works much better than plumber's putty. I'm not sure what it's good for. Also I use thread tape and pipe dope together. Tape tightly first, then a thin application of dope. Leaks are very rare that way.
Hi Oscar! When possible we are shopping from local suppliers (wood, metal, etc) but it really comes down to sourcing the best part for the application.
Sure, I'll send some right over! "There are others less qualified than you, doing the things you want to do, simply because they chose to believe in themselves."

Riley does all of his design work in Solidworks!
is your truck decile? i have the 5.7 hemi, and just sank $6k into it. my engine has a not uncommon cam/lifter failure. you can see a lot of youtube vids on it. many think idiling doesnt pump enough oil to the roller lifters. i like that exchanger system though! but for me its just more stuff to winterize. your trips are probably gonna be longer, but my trips are short and inbetween :)
Yes our truck is diesel! Sorry to hear about your Hemi troubles. I had a Hemi Commander for awhile and loved it but I sold it before it let me down. 😂
Happy New Year! You can only have hot water while your truck is running?
We're located on the central coast of California!
How much of a focus has been put in the build with USA made parts?
Hi Oscar! When possible we are shopping from local suppliers (wood, metal, etc) but it really comes down to sourcing the best part for the application.
Can you share some Ambition? I plumb ran out long ago . . . .
Sure, I'll send some right over!
"There are others less qualified than you, doing the things you want to do, simply because they chose to believe in themselves."
@@AmbitionStrikes Got it! Thanks! Think I will go plumb a turbo.

Hi! The truck is a 2015 that we purchased used last year with a Lance cabover that we eventually sold. We had a GMC Sierra for awhile that I loved!
That touch faucet is junk, I hope you learned your lesson by now
We’ve put them in 3 homes now and love them!
