Francis could have distilled her signature recipe in the last round. You do not need to have your signature ingredient to distill your signature recipe. You only need to have the sugar of the specific type. In Francis' case, she needed at least one of her plant sugars to come from potatoes, which she had. Signature ingredients are only special ingredients of the required type for the recipe.

Frances made a slight mistake in the 1st round: she would've been better off to trade back one of her ingredients for another ingredient (other than yeast or alcohol) of equal or lesser value (this is an option every player gets at the start of the distill phase). Trading one of her waters for mixed grains would've allowed her to distill and make some money, which is critical in the first few rounds. [Note: edited for clarity/correction]
Ahh this is a great call. That definitely would have helped me NOT get set back. Also the storage of unsaved spirits was a back and forth we had a lot - I was also understanding that they have to go in the storeroom. Thanks for watching!!
As far as I can tell, only aged spirits go to the storeroom during the aging step. I don’t see any mention in the rules that all spirits go to the storeroom after distillation, regardless of whether or not they need to be aged. Also, I don’t think basic water can be traded at the beginning of distillation. I don’t have the game in front of me, but I think that prohibition is printed on the card.
@@tlleitner You're correct about non-aged spirits not needing a slot in the storeroom, that was a mistake on my part. As for the distilling phase trade, I believe it's yeast, not water, that can't be traded with the basic market.

this game and earth are my top 2 games of this year..distilled is very thematic.. components and artwork are amazing...i wish more games were like this deep gameplay...no fluff great playthrough btw! francis shoulda made that spirit in the end...lol!
If you need 3 things from the basic market, you can buy something from the premium market with the sole purpose of trading it for that 3rd basic market card. So, Francis could have traded a card of equal or greater value for the wooden barrel she needed for tequilla in the last round. Though as pointed out in my other comment, she could have distilled her signature recipe instead.
25:55 Frances could have claimed Aquavit instead of vodka - it requires at least one grain OR one plant, and she had a grain. Looks like Anthony caught this at 35:50, but just pointing it out for anyone checking the comments during the video 😺

Bought this as an Xmas gift for one of my close friends took forever to arrive so hopefully it feels as fun to play as it was to watch.. Thanks to you both
It has a decent variety of characters, goals, and recipes, as well as the different ingredient and upgrade cards, but the gameplay is basically the same each play. It really depends on if you want variety of gameplay, or just variety of options within each play. As they mentioned in their play, you're never gonna be able to do everything you'd like.
There are a lot of different goals, characters (each with their own starting resources, signature ingredient and signature spirit), a pretty large deck of upgrades, ingredients and equipment, and a bunch of different flights that change up the strategy. Lots of ways to mix things, plus an expansion (Africa & Middle East). Mechanically the game is quite simple but everything is so tight (in terms of money and time) that you never have the chance to do everything you want. I liken it to Terra Mystica in that regard; lots of decision space to explore within a fixed set of options and actions.

You can’t trade for basic items, only for ingredients.
