  • This is a role play of a session where the Helper in a Human Resources Dept. is using counselling skills to enable the man to talk about a difficulty with a black female colleague. She uses the skill of Immediacy to name what he might be finding difficult. This role play is useful for anyone interested in healthy communications but it is particularly targeted at Level 2 & Level 3 counselling students. Jheni and I teach CPCAB counselling courses. If you have any comments or questions we would be delighted to hear from you.

can you help me answer some question
    1. The attitude of the counselor (may check in the book, how the body position, voice, etc., ask the counselor and observation of these things in this video) 2. Counselee's attitude (how body position, voice, etc. 3. Name 3 techniques and questions used by the counselor in the counseling process.

The counselor is very skilled and is able to address the concerns of the client. However I noticed that she is overdoing the use of her hand gestures which in some situations can cause the client's attention to be diverted to the counselor's hands.

I think I see... if the person seeing the councillor remembers not to blame anyone while expressing their feelings should make it feel safer to say especially if you are bottling things up, then that should work out if the workplace coworkers are shifty ... so glad the ipad did not predictive text that! Lol

Good approach however I was concerned with all the background noise. The session felt like it was being done on a corridor as there were people talking in the backgroung.

"Everything you say here will be confidential." Not true! The "therapist" reports back to the person paying for the session. If a manager at work has arranged this listening session the listener will report everything said to the manager. In a situation like this it is inevitable that the employee will be accused of racism, and yes this listener WILL be offende! These "therapists" are not bound by any professional code despite their protestations to the contrary.
    Leave the room now!

Is this only in the UK? Because here in the States professional counsellors in all fields of employment are bound ethically to the APA Code of Ethics and Confidentiality. If that happened here, a law suit would more than likely ensue and he would be the winner. Loved this woman's technique! She is a true and kind professional, and I doubt she is lying straight to her client's face!

He would be better to journal his feelings and pray about it. If they were cooler in the office and he has a friend or two in there it would work out because he wants reassurance and to be loved

HR in the workplace is there to save the company than the people. Hr was friends with my colleague, so I was carrying 3 peoples workload. When I left 2 more people were employed.

Christopher, I'm sorry to hear you had a negative experience. I can only talk about my experience as a therapist when I see clients who are referred by HR in companies. I make it clear that everything will be confidential except confirming that the client has attended. Since they are paying they always (in my experience) have agreed that with their member f staff at the outset. Under no circumstances would the content of the sessions be disclosed apart from the usual limits which are negotiated with the client. Hope that helps. I wish you well. Donal
