Cecily IS Halfrek, so at some point after she knew William (Fool for Love S4) she became a demon. Anya mentioned Halfrek had a "thing" for helping kids (like when Dawn made the wish) who are in unhappy home situations. Anya's "specialty" was wronged women. People get this idea in their head that Spike is a good guy now, because he's not actively trying to murder everyone. They completely overlook the fact he spends the season gaslighting, manipulating, and taking advantage of a depressed and emotionally broken woman for his own selfish needs, contributing to her depression and pain and not caring because he's getting what he wants. In fact, they think it's *good* for her and never listen when she says otherwise.
Maybe the next episode will help them see. But, maybe not. Because a lot of S6 Spuffy fans tend to complain it's "out of character" despite being exactly the same thing he's been doing _all season._

    • @ninjaboy4831

I always compare Spike to Vegeta from the Freeza to end of Cell Saga. People are surprised other characters don't like them or only keep them around for convenience (in universe he's a good extra hand when he's actually cooperating, out of universe he's too popular to let die). People also think it's inconsistent or bad writing whenever they do something that reminds the audience they aren't really good guys.

    • @shanechipman7157

Ya the problem with the fan base regarding spike is that James marsters does such a good job playing him that a lot of people like to ignore the negative things he does to Buffy because they love spike so much. That’s not being objective though lol I love spike too but both he AND Buffy were at fault he manipulated her and she used him and discarded him like garbage so neither were in the right. However I do also think the other side of the fan base that never even gives spike a crumb of a chance to redeem himself for what he does next episode is also unfair. Believe me I understand rape is no matter to be taken lightly and no one should ever have to experience something like that but to be fair spike didn’t have his soul so he technically was still a”evil demon” so to never even give him a chance after he gets his soul back and tries to become a better man is a bit too far in my opinion but again when it comes to rape people are going to have very strong opinions as it’s such a sensitive topic to discuss.

  • @dionjenkins963

I find it interesting that no one has an empathy for Xander. Yet, people had empathy for Spike, a literal murderer, when he was being used by Buffy. Imagine finding out your ex-fiancée and best friend slept with a literal serial killer who has harmed you and friends on multiple occasions. I admit that Xander leaving Anya at the altar is trash but I think people forget that Xander is at most 22 years old, so yeah he’s going to be dumb. It feels like a lot of people are demonizing him and acting like he’s the biggest POS on the show when others have done far worse.
I’m not liking this season of Buffy maybe because all of the suffering and trauma condensed so close together in this season. Other seasons have had it but it’s been more spread out. It’s so bleak. It comes off as Misery porn.
Btw this isn’t directed at you guys specifically. It’s what I’ve seen generally online from the fandom. All love. #SundayRundown

I think the problem is how entitled Xander acts. He left Anya at the altar and then tries to shame and belittle her for basically living her life. She can sleep with whoever she wants now, yet he believes he has an opinion over it and acts as if he owns her. He takes it so personally as if Anya's world revolves around him. If you forget about it being Spike and think about it, Xander literally went out to murder the guy Anya has slept with. A bit over the top considering he left her. He's been like this since season 1 though. Constantly putting his opinion in and acting like he knows better. It's exhausting. At least with Spike, you know he's evil so you don't expect any better from him.

I'd say no one, with the exception of Buffy cause her trauma is so different from everyone else's, is okay this season in terms of how they handle adult situations. Buffy on a fundamental level was broken when she came back and didn't want to be alive. She entered into a toxic tryst with Spike that has no soul and would not hesitate to kill all of her friends if it meant He could have her all to himself. She knew that and it wasn't till later she knew it was not healthy, left and has been trying to get back into life.
Xander, while what he did is messed up, came back to try and explain to Anya but it went poorly and he more or less just came back and acted like nothing happened last episode. Anya is saying she doesn't owe him anything and that it wasn't vengeance but whos really gonna believe that when this whole episode she kept going to his friends and trying to get back at Xander even when he was trying to talk and own up to what he had done, which I get because she was left at the alter but we've seen she clearly does not deal with human interaction. While Spike did this to blow up Buffy's life by fucking with her friends...again. And it's clear that Anya knows she messed up doing this as she's clearly sad and ashamed of it after.
I'm also surprised you guys are going "Well, Buffy told Spike he can tell people". She said to go for it because Spike was clearly gonna use that to create tension and drama by blackmail which he did just this episode going "it was good for Buffy". You guys are gonna be in for an upset when it hits you that SPIKE IS A MONSTER WITH NO SOUL!
Xander is being literal and right when he calls him a "Soulless Monster" cause that's what he is. Xander has no reason to like him, care about him, or treat him with dignity because Spike has tried to kill them on multiple occasions. A chip doesn't suddenly make him good, it just makes him fang-less against people, and that doesn't change no matter how many nice or romantic things he says to Buffy or if they've been fighting for a year. That doesn't out way seasons 2 - 4 or 5 where he committed murder, mayhem and a litany of other things.

We get it. When you break down Xander's relationship with Anya it's pretty toxic. And looking at it from this perspective does make Xander look really bad. But we're also talking about the comic relief of the show.
Much of the hate on Xander is coming from the comedy. "He's always correcting her & saying she's wrong" yeah, that was the bit. She's a "fish out of water" character so he has to explain why things are done a certain way & in their back & forth on the subject the show is able to satire issues.
Yes, part of the story is that Xander is just kind of lost & not being the best version of himself. And I think THAT's why I find the Xander hate coming from the couch to be annoying. But it is also telling on how society can be so easy to hate on a man when they would give a woman the benefit of doubt.
Seriously, just gender bend the situation and ask yourself....would you be SOOOOOOOOOOO vitriol in what you've been saying about Xander if were Alexandria? I mean we gotta take EVERYTHING into account. Xander's only other relationship being more like a fling with Cordelia. Xander's trauma of having to kill his best friend that turned into a vampire & created his core personality trait of hating vampires with a passion. Having a rough upbringing.
I feel like if that were a woman we'd be a lot more understanding about wanting to hold off on marriage. We'd be like "yeah girl, you need to be on your own & learn to love yourself before you can love someone else for the rest of your life". But whenever a man is in that situation it's all like "don't be a pv$$y, be a man about it and step up at once, this is all your fault".
Yes, he could've done things better. But damn, can we have SOME compassion for a PERSON going through some stuff? And yes, maybe the show could've done a better job with the Xander/Anya stuff. But again, there's only so much time you can give to the comic reliefs for more than comedy.

    My Sweet Summer Children,
It's truly wild seeing how calm the couch crew is at this moment....knowing that an out of control 18-wheeler is about to smash through that wall sending Funkos flying everywhere & sending the crew into utter chaos.
I believe this was Wheedon's attempt at the Slow Burn format. This season hasn't really gone anywhere. If anything, everyone has almost regressed in their lives. The Big Bad has been some boring sorry nerds that need to get some hobbies. It's without a doubt the slowest season of Buffy...and it was a choice.
This is why this season is pretty divisive. The message boards at the time were filled with "Angel is so much better" and I get it. Buffy was a little too real with the theme of "sometimes life is the Big Bad" and many viewers (especially with SciFi/Fantasy) are looking to escape. They don't wanna be reminded of their shitty jobs by seeing Buffy dealing with a shitty job cause even bills gotta get paid in her universe too.
But I appreciate where they took Buffy. It was a gamble and it would've failed miserably if the shit doesn't hit the fan in the next episode. But Joss and the others had the balls to go where they do. And it was pretty impactful for the times too. Not something you'd really see on Network TV.

Entropy is a great name for the episode here. We can see the Season collapsing into complete randomness and disorder created by past events. The Anya/Xander meeting is so awkward, when she asks him again about getting married, he still can't commit, and Anya continues the pressure, this looks like the final straw, he keeps telling her he loves her but this isn't enough. Interesting comedy bits when Anya approaches Willow, Tara, Buffy and Dawn about hating men, and she says to Tara and Willow 'what kind of lesbians are you'. She realises that the Scoobies will never turn against Xander. A great dramatic conversation with Spike and Buffy when he tells her to 'get out' he says it with such venom we just know things have now changed. Halfrek of course obviously a bad influence on Anya who thinks Spike could be an ally. Once Spike and Anya get drunk, we inevitably see what is going to happen ( a true life reflection again, as many times this randomly happens once alcohol is involved ). Willow of course is trying to find the source of the cameras, but boy are they in for a surprise. Strangely we can see Buffy is actually hurt watching Spike have sex with Anya, he has kept her secret up until now, but as he has now totally rejected Buffy lets it out to Xander and Anya. Xander just cannot believe this is happening all at once, but that is the Entropy. Now the whole 'can of worms' has been opened, and the Entropy that is Pandora's Box' cannot be closed.

I will say that I can understand everyone’s frustrations with Xander. His is fueled by his self-loathing, insecurities, and fear of becoming his father. The vision that he saw on his wedding day was all of his inner fears being exposed like a raw nerve. He basically saw himself in a mirror and hated the man that stared back at him: a clone of his father. Xander hurt Anya, but he truly meant to spare her long-term heartache by ripping the band-aid off in the short-term.
As annoying as Xander can be, I do appreciate that the writers have constructed a believably flawed character. They aren’t afraid to make their characters be unlikable and expose their vulnerabilities. This doesn’t mean they always hit it out of the park as I do still have problems with Xander. But I do like that they were willing to go to those lengths and let the audience decide how they feel.

    • @Madbandit77
      @Madbandit77 17 дней назад

I don't know if Xander is believably flawed as he double down on those flaws. According to JW, who's not exactly a paragon of virtue nowadays, Xander is an extension of him, a self-hating teen with lousy parents and a bad education experience who feels the cutest girls should swoon over him instead of hunky guys, let alone vampires. That's disturbing because JW, when he wrote the pilot episode, wasn't a teen. He was an grown ass adult, but, like Xander, he didn't deal with his troubles in a healthy manner and fell into his own escapism.

In this episode's case, entropy is a lack of order and a decline into disorder.
Sadly, if Xander had just listened to what Anya said when he proposed he would still be dating her. He wasn't ready and she knew it, but he convinced her he was and then got cold feet and expected things to go back to them being fine when he didn't talk to her after leaving her at the alter. Xander fans shouldn't have to wonder why non-fans don't like him. It isn't the negative actions (although they don't help) themselves. It's how he reacts to them.
Some examples: 1. Xander asking Buffy out only to react by saying, "I guess a guy's gotta be undead to make time with you" before asking Willow out as a backup knowing he doesn't feel that way and she does, when Buffy doesn't return his feelings. 2. Placing a spell on Cordelia in reaction to her having issue of old vs new friends. 3. Yelling at Buffy, instead of talking to her, every time she disagrees with his opinions. 4. Cheating on Cordelia with Willow and then saying, "We didn't do anything wrong," only to afterwards start bullying her the way she did in S1 towards everyone. 5. Waiting until Buffy and Riley imploded before saying "I told you so," when he overheard Riley say Buffy doesn't love him two and a half months in advance of saying "I told you so" to her. 6. Say he was going to spend more time with Buffy, only to focus more on wedding plans, then leave Anya at the alter. Thus not helping Buffy in the healthy way he mentioned in _Tabula Rasa_ and also leave Anya at the alter and acting like he does in this episode towards Anya and Buffy when he didn't like the way they were handling their issues of depression and being left at the alter.
These are only a few examples. All characters have moments of negative actions and reactions. Xander has more than most characters. All characters also have reactions that allow a forgiveness from the audience and/or other characters. Xander has incredibly few. As much as I dislike what he does, I understand Xander's issues, including the cold feet in _Hells Bells._ What I dislike, is his negative reactions to his undelt with issues. They only cause more issues afterwards.
He even has the same problem here as Willow had towards him in _Innocence_ when she discovered he was with Cordelia. What I mean by that is if Xander and Willow in _Innocence_ and this episode want to feel hurt, they have that right, but Willow taking it out on Xander when she has heard him say he was never interested in her, and Xander left Anya at the alter show anything, it is that others (in this case Anya and in _Innocence's_ case Xander) have a right to move on or be with someone who isn't the hurt individual. Xander taking it out on Spike because he's angry at Anya is not OK. I prefer the way Buffy handled it (which showed the audience that emotionally she is now doing better since Riley came to town). She told Spike it hurt her to see him with Anya (not in those exact words, but when they faced each other after Xander left from attempting vengeance), but she didn't get angry. The tone was a little negative, but it wasn't portraying anger. Anya telling Spike not to wish (which he wasn't thinking about on word choice) makes her the better person in dealing with her issues over Xander who still isn't. Spike and Buffy leave this episode off in a healthier place towards each other than they have been since the musical. They also still have a lot of issues to go, though. And Spike is still soulless. He wasn't entirely being with Anya to move on from Buffy. Despite not knowing he and Anya had been watched he wasn't sad or upset it happened and welcomed Buffy knowing, even if she reacted as she did. Mickey's gas can metaphor was a perfect example. All four characters still have a lot to talk about, and a long way to go towards healing. The episode was named Entropy for a reason. Not because of the conclusion to the episode, but because of the first 2/3'rds of it.
I love that The Normies said they had no sympathy for Xander. Everything they stated about him is so true.
Buffy said to Dawn in _Normal Again,_ like Why would I sleep with a vampire I hate?" That's how Dawn put it together.
The idea that the other fifth grade kids Micky was talking about could get away with it by the second one asking what ("Que") when the first kid said "Fa" would make that situation even more funny.
Anyone who tries to tell me Xander ever got over what he claimed was love for Buffy, I wouldn't believe them. The dream at the end of S4 showed his love language is still confused horny scholboy who is in denial about his real relationship with Buffy vs finding her attractive. And it shows in evwry romantic relationship he's ever had.
The reason they are slowly dealing with things is because Riley, whether he meant to or not, pulled Buffy from her depressive state. So now despite the Xander Entropy, other situations are getting better because Buffy is no longer depressed.

High school everything was super scary and life or death. Now the problems are internal. Giles left, and without wise mature guidance, everyone dealt with their problems in the worst way and showed their worst selves. Addiction, depression, loneliness, rejection, fear of the future, trauma, heartbreak...all everyday non monster issues that the gang dealt with horribly. Even the nerd Trio are symbolic of childish boyhood power fantasies. When viewed in a mature context, it's just misogynistic, creepy toxic incel behavior that seemed okay when they were kids. And each one represents a stage of maturing from that state. Jonathan is growing out of it, Andrew is a lemming who just wants to feel important and fit in and Warren is a pure misogynist. And you can trace their development back to theie first appearances. Except Andrew bcuz he's was the unseen brother of the prom night villain. Season 6 is the gang at their worst and is right their with season 2 and 3 in terms of quality imo. Most people rank this as their least favorite season but not me.
Edit: regarding the Cecily/Halfrek debate. Some of us believe Cecily was already a vengence demon when she met Spike and she was answering the pain from Spike's mother to get rid of him bcuz he was such a mama's boy. ((((SPOILER ALERT))))
Halfrek will be shown with Anya as vengence demons in the past but long before Spike was born (Spike's around 150 y/o during BTVS) during the French revolution. Could be a continuity error but considering how far the show was plotted in advanced, it's not likely an error.

I don't understand how the entire couch is acting brand new on this. I'm not a xander fan, but they can't understand how bad a rebound can't make you feel, if your ex hooks up with a friend, or someone you hate? After she try to indirectly kille you? I swear, they have a big boner for spike, they just want to live the fantasy through anya and buffy

      He should've married Anya then.

@theFILMaDDICT16 yeah, probably. But what that has to do with what i said. Spike is still a soulless monster, and a grapist. I don't like xander, but it seems you spike groupies based all your opinions on defending your precious bran of a serial killer

I have my own opinions on Spike's story which is long but all I'm saying is what they're feeling is justifiable. They're just expressing their frustrations with the writers for choosing this route for their favorite characters that's all. Which in my opinion wasn't necessary.

@theFILMaDDICT16 yeah, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But they clearly don't like any of the characters in the show anymore. They complain about every stupid decision they made, like they don't have 20 years years old, but spike... no, he is the best, he does nothing wrong, like he haven't try to kill everyone in the show. But you know what? Good for them

How could Chris possibly think the show wants us to side with Xander? The show frames him as the literal villiain of the episode, causing the final fight and acting as the aggressor of the episode's climax. It's illustrating him as a damn mess at his absolute bottom as a human being.

Such a great reaction. Loved how wild it made you.
But this is just the start of the rollercoaster. Next episode is WILD (there will be a lot of talk and it’s gonna be controversial). Next few episodes will be so good to watch. One of the all time great punch the air moments coming up. Emotional final. Can’t wait.

Xander doesn't deserve the hating he gets from the couch. They just can't grasp what brings all of his insecurities throughout life.
