Mark is awesome. He and the other two members of Khruangbin are so damn refreshing. They've saved "modern" music for me. Turns out he and I are the same age, so I don't feel too old to get down to it.
I'd have to disagree on the "best band" claim, my vote goes to Ghost for that one. Don't get me wrong Khruangbin are talented but Ghost's output is near flawless thus far and their genre bending is top tier.
To many music fans out there, whether the guitar Community realizes it or not, Mark n Leezy are massive guitar heroes to many, most if whom do not listen to a lot of 'guitar' music. Be grateful this incredible band exists
All my step dad’s picks were worn like that… he played for many years before passing and he had a collection of his worn picks that was his badge of honor… Guild D40 with 11s… sometimes I’ll use one in memory.
Love his unorthodox and un-guitar hero approach to the instrument! He really is an inspiration and an unsung hero of guitar! I remember hearing them on random on the radio at work one time thinking, "What the hell is this pompous shit" lol... But after listening to a few of their songs, I was like... HOLY SHIT this guitarist is just shredding his Riffs and guitar parts!! Mark just shreds the guitar quite differently than anyone else really does!

as you wear a pick down it becomes better suited to your play style. I have the rubber gripped Dava picks that I swap between for certain songs and they all wear the way they are played and I find myself favoring some over others as a result.
Ok- I’ve got a drawer full of picks. I find them in my washer and dryer, under my bed, in the console of my wife’s car, etc. I admire Mark’s simplicity.
I used to play the green ones as all rounders on electric. Good for rhythm, good for solos, and they just felt right to me. The yellow ones are probably as thin as I'd go, and I'd use em for strumming. Even on electric, the thickness of the pick makes an audible difference, mostly in the attack. With thicker picks you get a harsher, more treble-y sound (at least to my ear). Now I play a jazz iii made of the same material, and i love it
Those green ones (the .88mm I think?) are the best. I love them. I specifically play the sharp ones. My love for the sharp ones makes my guitarist friends so fused, but it just seems more intuitive and precise for me. Either way, same for me that thickness was just right when I tried them all. Just enough flex, just enough toughness.
@@dawnkeyy I might have to give the Jazz III's another try, specifically with that thickness. When I was using them for a time, my only gripe with the jazz III's were the small size of them. It would feel like I was always about to drop or lose them. That's why I ended up using the sharps. But I know they have a few variants on them. Might be fun to look around at them again.
@@markiszak I actually did this past year and started using them! And actually, since then even, I've started now using bone picks (made from bone). I love the shape, durability, and the lack of flex (since I started learning some thrash metal riffs and other more technical music, I've warmed up to picks that don't flex at all). But more than anything, believe it or not, I like the sound of bone picks more. There are these upper harmonics in the note with them. Not for everyone, but I like them quite a bit.
He's the antithesis of the whole overlanding offroading "movement." It's not about the GEAR. It's about HIM and what he does. I can only imagine the countless hours of him just noodling around on the guitar by himself that no one is ever fortunate enough to hear.
The other guy: ooohh wow that's an austin green pick damn how incredible is that😯😯 The guitarrist: i don't know is just a random 5$ pick i found around 😀
He is sooooo much cooler of a guy then I ever realized. I never knew his personality. Before this snippet of a rig run down, my impression was that he was somewhat of an OCD/elite'ish character. But, he's really got this " guy next door friendly" kind of guy. (I mean, as a compliment, of course). I'm still on the fence with his music. Thumbs up....I will listen to more of their music.
he was just like " wooow" i might have lost my job. there is no reason for me to be here, this guy plays amazing and doesnt care about all the stuff im here to talk about
Tortex .88s. If you had to use just one, single solitary pick for the rest of your life, that'd probably be the one I chose. Jazz III version specifically.
Trying to act like they don’t know sh!t about sh!t. They know damn well the Tortex sizes. Been using them since high school, we all have. .50 red, .60 orange, .73 yellow, .88 green (my favorite) 1.0 blue, 1.14 purple. Then the 1.35 black and 1.5 white but only in the Jazz III, sharp, and FLOW shapes. I wish I could throw their price in your face as well, but I don’t got it like that.
Full Rig Rundown: bit.ly/KhruangbinRR
Damn. That’s impressive. I’ve lost 4 picks just during this video.
I can sit one place not get up. Lose 4 picks. No way could I keep a pick For two days impossible
😂
I can't remember the last time I lost one.
I got sick of losing all my picks, so I made a nice wooden container to hold them all. Now I cant find the container.
And the bottom E string.
This guy is flying under the radar, he is one of the most impressive guitarrists out there
100 percent
Still the case in 2024 imho, Mr. Speer is filthy good
@@markiszak agreed
100% every live set he improvises at some point. My had would be soar after 3 songs.
Came here to say this. AMAZING Talent!
Mark is, hands down, my favorite living guitarist. He's one of the most original players on the scene today.
This guy is what i would call GOLD
on Father Father that damn riff that runs through it is something ethereal
Honestly the more I read about and watch this guy, the more impressed I am. We should all keep it this simple. And what a talent.
1 wig, 1 pick, 1 guitar 👍
1 hair cut
Gotta be a wig
Ctm! 😂
@@TheAgentAssassinit's a wig
hahaha
This band is one of my biggest joys. I'm so fortunate that I found them- they always get my mood right.
😂😂 “yeah so this is my only pick. It’s a standard whatever” love this band even more now lol

This was a great Wig Wundown.
I wonder

Best freakin comment! Thanks 😂

Speer will go down as one of the greats of our time. Such an inspiration. 🤝✌️
I'm not generally into the strat sound, but Mark has singlehandedly changed that.
I could listen to this dude all day
Honestly one of the most talented guitar players around.
What a dude.
There music is amazing and funky.

He can REALLY play....what an inspiration, and the simplicity is refreshing.
Him and his bandmates, walk there own sonic path, for sure.
Saw this guy last Friday. Absolutely incredible guitarist!
This is also funny when you also remember that Laura has never changed her strings either. I love these guys.
To be fair, bass strings generally last a lot longer than guitar strings, they’re practically ropes; still funny though
Don't EVER stop playing, genius!
I would be sweating bone narrow trying to play anything like this and the three of them just look so relaxed and mellow.
❤
Nothing like an engaging guitar pick discussion.
the green Tortex ones are .88mm… i used them for years
Same here. I've tried others, but always come back home.

That series strat he uses has some definite tele vibes in styling and tone. Absolutely love his sound
Such a cool dude

Yeah, I had one of those once. I've been thinking of buying a nickel tipped one.
Damn, I thought I was the only guy that did that with Dava pics! Thanks for posting.
Love this band🤘🏻

.88’s. I love them. Just switched to .73 yellows, which I think strum better. But, who knows if it actually makes a difference 🤷♀️
.73 are mine too.

i got .71, but use .46 for acoustic
It's the fkn PikofDestiny my Man!!

What a guy! Awesome
I’ve got a pick I used since the 80’s. If I change strings once a year I’m doing good!
It’s just so rustic . And post modern.
Omg that’s genius. I wish I would’ve thought of it .

I have a signed demo of theres from like 2011 somewhere… i need to find that.
I love that the bassist plays an SX!
Just seems like a real down-to-earth kind of Dude.
I’ve seen guys play with basically dots of plastic that used to be a pick.
He had one guitar....pick. felt good in his hands
He showed his pick like he offered some cigarrete 😅 pretty chill guy.
That’s all you need
Legend
I Love this
The 21st century Jerry Garcia.
What a tasty band.
Sparticus ,,, awesome
Tortex Rocks!
Spend all the money on cocaine. Rock n roll
Cocaine and wigs
I spent most of the money on alcohol, drugs, and women, and I wasted the rest…
I’ve got that same type pick, and mine is damn near round, too 🤣
Blokes is the best right now he is the bomb.
I just picked up a 72-pack of these and there was a mutant non-completely formed one in the bag that has this guy's name written all over it.
My fav picks too

Are we going to see relic picks now?
I've got a single dragon heart pick I've used for 4.5 years
I use the red ones and I have one thats just starting to really wear down after a year
Mark Spear is so fucking bad ass

I believe the green ones are .81
Tortex .8 all the way
the green ones are 0.88
the 0.73 are the yellow ones, I believe Mustaine uses them.
The last year I experimented a lot with what I gravitate towards and it’s definitely the .88 Flow Tortex.
I like the flow picks to, but I like the ultex over the tortex. I think they're a little less bright.

Bro that makes you sound a little elitist. Listen to khruangbin. They borrow from so many cultures. Their music is a beautiful hybrid.
The sweet tone comes from his hair
My picks are too expensive for me to lose, thats why im mad some are missing, its the jazz 3 kirk hammet edition with the cutout
I like the orange tortek
Like to see how this guitarist would work in heavier style bands like Tuber, Pelican, King Buffalo, etc..
This is Spinal Tap.
I literally have a thousand picks. Every time i need one they all disappear 😂
They’re all at my house. I find picks in my underwear.
One pick to rule the world.

Dunlop Max Grip .73…. All day!
There is no way you've used the same pick for months without selling your soul
I lose a pick every time I play in my own garage lol

This dude gets so fuckin much out of minimal equipment. He makes his guitar sound like different instruments around the world and shit. It’s nuts 😅
How’s it not rough?
Green Tortex . 88 mm
I don’t know who that is can anyone send a link to a song
“I have one pick….here is my other pick.”
It's a backup that's never been used 😂
He basically wore it down to the size of their jazz III pick, so he should start with one of those instead of a replacement full size pick.
He should use an Ultex pick. Wearing down won’t happen like that.
Cray cray
I can’t play with a rounded pick. They have to be super pointy to get those clean, accurate runs
He also said in rig rundown that Steve Ray sucked
That was my pick for about 10 years, then one day I tried a 1.5 mm my speed increased x1.5
Never let anyone touch your guitar pic, esp if its your only pic.
