Tom Hanks On ‘A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood’ | TODAY
Mr rogers IS for adults. It's a message that takes 20 years to understand,.
Very well said 👍
That’s a good point. As kids, we actually thought he was geeky and corny
One of the VERY BEST comments I've ever read on you tube 💯
@@janetownley When I was a kid, I thought he was just making it up - almost NONE of the adults in my life were in any way demonstrative of the virtues he espoused.
So true.. you get it more, and more as you age. If only we were all as pure, and loving as he was... RIP Mr. Rogers.
I saw this movie on Sunday. It was the best 1 1/2 hours I have invested in my mental health in years. It was healing and I walked away wanting to be a better person.
Carla a 💯facts
I also left the theatre after watching this movie wanting to become a better person. Who loves me for me, and just be more polite, optimistic and calm.
Hehe, it made exact opposite to me. Documentary about Mr. Rogers cured that! :D
Me too, exactly.
I felt exactly the same.
My act of helping my daughter as a very young child to write a letter to Mr. Rogers on her birthday turned into a yearly pen pal birthday letter exchange to not only my daughter but to me as well. As you might guess my knee jerk pessimistic reaction to those first letters was how nice to have Mr. Rogers’ administrative assistant send us one of their letters. If anyone reads one of his letters though, it quickly hits you that only he could have actually written these letters. His letters displayed the compassion and insight he displayed on his show. My daughter & I exchanged these yearly birthday letters with Mr. Rogers right up to his death. We will always remember our genuine dear friend.
Jim Mauch thats incredible!!!
Beautiful! Makes my heart smile.
Jim Mauch wow what a treasure you were so involved in. How fortunate.
I was born in 1972, so I loved his show. He was a constant for me. You gave your daughter, and yourself, an amazing gift. And I can only imagine those letters brought him comfort, that he was doing the right thing. I imagine the letters are private, but I admit to being curious about them. I can only imagine love and kindness in his letters.
Those would make a good book
When I was in grad school, under a great deal of stress, sometimes I would come home and turn on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. Somehow, even thought he was on tV and no doubt prerecorded years before, he knew just what to say to make my day better and make me know that I would get through it. At times, it was uncanny. One time it was stormy and I was soaked to the bone from making a long trek to the campus parking lot. Mr. Rogers said, “It’s a beautiful day.” And i said, “Well, not today, Fred.” And he said, “Some days are good on the outside and somedays are good on the inside.” I said, “Good point....Are you actually listening to me, Fred?”
Mary Ann C I was still preschool age when Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood made its national debut, and watched regularly until I “outgrew” him for “more mature” fare such as Giligan’s Island reruns 😆
About 8 years later, I was at that awkward tween age and had just moved to a new home and school district. I had always been a bit of the odd duck, and was never a member of “the popular” crowd.
I too, would come home from a stressful day at school and found comfort in watching that afternoon’s broadcast (though I now see those were hiatus years) of MRN. He was so sincere when he spoke directly to the camera and said “I love you just the way you are” 🥰
Mary Ann C 🤣😂 wow
I’m writing my undergrad thesis right now and doing the same thing ❤️
I also discovered Mr Rogers when I was in grad school (I was an international student). During the hard times, I just watched the clips of his interviews or him talking and instantly cried. Whenever he said I like you just the way you are, I bursted into tears, good tears. Needless to say, he has something to do with me being able to overcome those tough times.
@@colinhyou Absolutely! There are clips on RUclips that get me teared up every time- testifying before congress, Emmy acceptance speech, even appearing on Johnny Carson. I’m glad I’m not the only one!
He made so many of us feel important, valid and cared about...
Very much so. Thank you. This was very inspiring. It felt like it had so easily reached a place where it's rarely able to make it through the fog and layers that are now hopefully transformed into hope. I wrote "JUST BE GOOD ' (+ ref) on paper and stuck it on view for morning reminder. Thank you for the Hope. Gn.
One thing about Mr. Rogers that I never noticed until I was an adult was, he was talking to me and he introduced his neighbors to me. Not to all his friends watching the show but just me. He always spoke to the camera in the singular. Like I was the only kid watching, I was the only kid with him.
Great interview but Tom is wrong on only one thing. I think Mr. Rogers is for all of us. Especially Adults. We as adults even more than children, need to watch Mr. Rogers with our kids and take the lessons he is trying to pass onto them and apply them to us, because don't think for a minute that we all can't use what he is trying to convey in his lessons and apply it to our lives.
Im not a young millennial
But by your comment and implication it does seem like you could use a recap yourself in your old age.
@Too Wun You're talking about learning good morals but you took this nice comment about a wonderful man and had to turn it into some crap about the generational war
I don't know, doesn't really check out with me
Ashamed to say now, but I felt the same as Hanks did about the show. Even tho I’m a slow-paced southerner, watching Mr. Rogers was agonizingly slow torture for me... until one day I noticed my 3-yr-old niece, whose parents were in the mist of an ugly divorce, hanging onto every word he said. She was the most quite, yet the most standup child. If she saw someone mistreating someone, be it a cartoon, a doll or another person, she’d calmly intervene.
Many adults loved him and cried heavy tears at his death. My son and I loved his slowness, he hated he faster paced shows. Mr Rogers respected that he could understand something longer than 1 minute.
As a human being, Fred Rogers was so great that Hanks has never had a greater roll to play.
Tom is that person who, despite all of his fame and talent, can still manage to talk to you like he's your next door neighbor. Gotta love this man. 🙂♥️
JadeMusic Remember he’s an actor. I bet he has an ego bigger then his bank account.
Ha, @@granny4897, just because someone is an A-list actor doesn't mean they're gonna have a big ego. I suppose they could be good at _acting_ like they don't, though. I met Tom and Colin in Salt Lake City during the Sundance of 2008, and they both seemed genuine to me.
@@granny4897 I *know* he's an actor. That doesn't mean he can't be genuinely *nice* .
my cousin met Tom. He’s a very sweet & caring person.
Wonderful person 👏👏❤️
I sincerely believe that Fred Rogers, in contemporary times, was the best humankind had to offer.
.... and the angry bagel guy.
Jay Trace Really? Mr. McFeely? Have you watched a CREEPY episode lately?
Carl, Sagan, David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, Bob Ross. The best humans have to offer.
Only one person was better.
Ditto
From that interview I got the impression that choosing a good man to play a good man was singularly appropriate
Also Susan it's just been discovered that him and Mr. Rogers share a great (x6) grandfather who was born in 1732, so it seems even more appropriate now.
Fun Times wow that’s cool
Deep.
Tommy Sweetweather 🤗 Thank you!
@Tommy Sweetweather until there is irrefutable proof about Tom Hanks being on Epsteins island I will continue to call it what it is...a conspiracy theory.
This man is a philosophical national treasure ...playing a philosophical national treasure. I couldn't be happier.
He said Trump would never become president.
@@BonafideToolJunkie Yep, he's a fraud!
@@BonafideToolJunkie he was wrong, so what? Nobody's perfect.
Why can't my day just consist of beautiful conversations like these?
You are a beautiful person!
Probably because you surround yourself with ugly people.
BRITTANY---YES! PLEASE!!
I think Tom Hanks expresses it well-we CAN have conversations like this. We need to lead into it, with sincerity, genuine interest in understanding the other person, noticing the good in them.
What a wonderful question to get the day going with and you created it and shared it with us so that we can ask that same question. I think that’s a terrific thing. It’s one of the best things that we can do. You have every right to bring those good conversations into your daily life and I personally hope that they continue to make their way to you. Why? Because you deserve it. ☀️
"It's good to talk, it's good to say the things we feel..." We all could use this line in our everyday life.
Mr rogers is truly a legend. A hero to many, a friend to all. May his legacy live on forever.
When Mister Rogers was on PBS, I was a self-involved high school teen. One afternoon, I turned in KHET and found Fred Rogers contending with a
dead Guppy on the bottom of an aquarium. Rather than scoop it up roughly and toss it into the toilet and flush it away, he gently retrieved the
fish and checked to see if it really was dead by putting it into a light salt water bath. Satisfied that it was "swiming in heaven," he took the
defunct fish outside and gave it the kind of a burial reserved for a cherished pet, like a dog or cat. That is what made Mr. Rogers a "top of
the world" TV host and a friend to children...of any age.
He still _is_ on PBS.
i watched that episode and remember
I keep fish; well tended, and well loved, those little guys can live, for years.... My betta (Red Chief) swims directly, to me, loves music, plays with my hand, and we interact----on a daily basis... Mr. Roger's sensitivity to Life's smallest details, and knowing their impact, on a child's sensibilities, is (not simply rare), but a practically unknown gift..... The World is too busy, and much too noisy..... May God hold this darling man, in the hollow of His hand.......🌹
I always liked watching how stuff was made and how Mr McFeeley always ran off.
I think I remember this episode. I think this is how he taught us about Death. Such a gentlemen💙
I love how Tom Hanks made this interview really about Mr. Rogers and not about him playing Mr. Rogers.
Robin Mantari good point 💯
Hanx has something behind the 👀
@@saltress1126 ?
What a lovely interview. I mean, of course Tom Hanks is awesome as always, but Savannah did such a great job leading the conversation. Well done!
She is a Mr Rogers fan; you don't want a troll interviewing Mr Rogers.
Authentic. The best compliment I can think to give to another man.
8:53: “I think that’s Divine.” 🙂
Fred Rogers was more than a nice guy. He was a powerful man.
In the heyday of Sesame Street, my adhd son would instead sit immobile before Mr. Rogers and his neighborhood. I'm sure it was because of "I like you just the way you are. "
Tamra Houser did you heavily medicate him like so many boomer parents did?
My bots, too. No meds.
I grew up in Pittsburgh and watched Mr Rogers every day. I then hung around for Sesame Street afterwards, but considered it a secondary show to Mr Rogers. As a kid, I thought the switching of the shoes was the coolest thing ever. Too bad I didn’t know I could’ve convinced my parents to drive me 20 minutes down to the studio to see him in person. I had no concept of locations.
Mom?
Same with my ADD son.
I live in Latrobe, Pa (Mr. Roger's hometown), and its very surreal to realize the magnitude of the popularity of this local pop culture icon. I never met him, but he was an amazing man!
Mr Rogers was more Christ like than any famous Televangelist on TV . Mr Rogers was a genuine and beautiful human being who was so selfless , compassionate and an Example of Jesus Christ . He actually visited the sick in hospitals and didn’t showboat
IllO Str8 As someone who is not deeply religious, but familiar with the Bible, you are absolutely correct! Rogers was a great example of what it means to be Christ-like.
Mr. Roger was the real Christian the follower of Christ. And he live and show Christ in his life for the world...
Thank you. Very well said. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood didn't have to be overtly religious because as both you, Mrs. Guthrie, and Mr. Hanks agree...Fred Rogers was living out His faith in Christ every day. It's not about saying it. It's about living it.
This is a wonderful two way street interview. The way Tom asks Savannah questions is great to watch as well. May Tom be a part of our lives for another quarter century or more.
He never used the word "God" because he's a minister at practice, not preaching!!
Love that
I never realized that. I was raised in a home with no religion, and it might have been a little off-putting if he had talked about God. But as it was I could be completely comfortable with him.
Exactly. He's a humble man. His life speaks for itself.
I'm pretty sure that he sometimes said both the word "god" and the _name_ "God," but not in vain.
I’m glad he wasn’t preachy, rather he explained why it’s important to be kind and empathetic which religion doesn’t have ownership of.
Mister Rogers was a great individual when I was a child; I remember that I couldn't wait each day for his program to come on TV!
This man cannot make a bad movie. What a great person and actor.
Joe Versus the Volcano.
I agree 100%. He is my favorite!
Rebecca Bamford 🤗 Yeah he saves all the bad to use on children. Lost shoe anyone?
You've got mail is the only bad movie I think he was in. But only one in ? That's amazing.
@@MaddyWalker98 Cynicism is alive and well.
This interview is splendid. I wish people could actually sit down and talk like this more. All we do is argue back and forth these days it seems. Actually talking, and hearing what the other has to say is nice.
"It's good to talk" ♫ ♪
I try this every day. As I get older all I want is CALM AND PEACE.
People nowadays are always in a hurry. Looking at their phones instead of actually speaking to another human being. We all need to talk but to listen more. God gave us 2 ears and only 1 mouth.
What a gifted actor and character!
I think Mr Rogers is for everyone, EVEN (especially) adults. I mean after all, isn't there a child inside all of us? I love how when I watch Mr Roger's shows I get to feel the joy of being childlike and remember the importance of being a light in a world of darkness.
I have avoided watching this movie since I heard it was going to happen because I felt Fred Rogers was not to be touched by Hollywood. I've relaxed on that and after seeing this interview I'm ready to watch it. Before not even Tom Hanks was worthy but he did the work and the research and I'm sure I'm going to love it. I sure did love growing up loving Mr. Rogers! As an adult I cried and watched his last episode and cried again the day he died. What a beautiful man!
I hope you enjoyed it 😊

About 31 years ago Tom was in a movie called The Burbs. If memory serves, there's a scene early on where Tom's character is in some sort of early morning haze sipping orange juice and quietly singing the Mr. Rogers theme to himself. Serendipity.
I saw that.
The Burbs...best comedy, ever.
Nice. Very funny movie. 80s classic.
William McGalloway I own this movie lol
I seemed to recall that scene from The Burbs as well, came out way back when I was 8 or so but still is a great movie all these year later. Pretty hilarious movie actually. Especially the first half of the movie: the dog going on his lawn, the nutty neighbors, especially the one always over at Tom Hank's character's house always helping himself to the fridge...
Fred Rogers was brought up with faith as the cornerstone of his life.
He was a living testament of that faith. Such a beautiful man who touched so many hearts. 💖
There is something very delightful and kind about the woman giving this interview.
Tom Hanks should win a third Academy Award for the movie A Beautiful Day In The Neighbor as Fred Rogers.
It's for children looking for someone to invest in them. Yes, that sums Mr. Rogers up. He was determined to show children that they mattered and that at least one adult wanted to invest in them.

As someone who works in the early childhood education field, I think of Mr. Rogers as my personal hero. I always try to think of what he would say to someone in a certain situation before I say anything. I am also a practicing Catholic, and I personally cannot WAIT to meet him in Heaven.
Mr. Rogers has NO DARK SIDE! He saved a generation from the disparity of convoluted adults. This was before the pandemic and challenges now present. Leave your hang ups at the door. Mr. Rogers is an American Saint- something we Americans are not known for producing.
Everyone has a dark side. But Mr. Rogers was very intentional and very real in dealing with his dark side.
Hello from Pittsburgh! Mr. Rogers is basically a saint of this city and I saw Tom Hanks when he was filming this movie in town. Absolutely perfect casting is all I can say.
As a young Marine I'd pick up my son from daycare after work and we'd go home, sit on the couch and watch Mr. Rogers. Often there was another Marine buddy that would follow me home rather than go to the barracks. There we were. Two Marines with a less than two year old boy between us, watching Mr. Rogers.
I love this comment
One of the best interviews I've ever seen
Mister Rogers’ lessons mean more to me as an adult than they ever did as a kid. He was my hero though! That half hour each day was a place of safety.
Tom Hanks is probably my favorite actor of all time. He totally nailed the role of Mister Rogers in this movie
I was a first gen Mr. Rogers kid, and the thing I carry with me today is that he had a calming effect on me, and I always felt like he would always tell you the truth.
A good man doesn't have to be perfect. A good man is just being a good human being.
Except that it's not being human that makes us imperfect; it's being temporarily _mortal_ that does that.
Oskar Schindler was like that. A gambler, drinker, and womanizer..but he saved people from death. Once you do something like that, the negative things just seem to become irrelevant to your character.

I remember watching Mr. Rogers when my daughter was sitting in her little chair to listen to what Mr. Rogers and his Neighborhood was on and I can see she really paid attention and I actually cried through some of the talks he had with the audience which he made one think about certain subjects. It was wonderful to say, "It's you I like" I loved that song very much because it makes sense to listen to the words.
Tom, you did a top notch job and I am sure Mr Roger is smiling. I cried and loved the move so much, it was deep and it was right on the money.
This is one of the better interviews I've seen and I think Tom Hanks has it ... He's got Mr. Rogers down ... Isn't it great how we can all see things from different perspectives
It's awesome and interesting to see someone of Tom's caliber meet his match and be humbled by the enormity of trying to fill the shoes of someone of Fred's character.

Fred Rogers
"There are three ways to ultimate success:
The first way is to be kind.
The second way is to be kind.

George Washington
“Every Action done in Company, ought to be with Some Sign of Respect, to those that are Present.”
Two great leaders both emphasizing kindness and respect. In today's world where we are leaderless or you might say we have someone in a leadership position who is lacking in every way possible. Mister Rogers represented a simple message. You are allowed to be human. Try to be kind. Simple as that.
I think he was really saying that you're allowed to act _mortal_ while you're still _mortal,_ since it sounds like you're saying that he's talking about trying to be kind while we still have imperfections at the moment, which is different from just being human.
@@HelloKittyFanMan. I'm using the term "human" as it is often used to indicate that we as human beings are inherently imperfect. I said what I wanted to say in that regard, and in the way that I wanted to say it. You're using the term "mortal." Mortal as opposed to what alternative? Immortal? Not sure I understand your intended meaning here. However, from a purely linguistic position, I would argue that the commonly used English phrase is "I'm only human." Not "I'm only mortal." Take care.
Mr. Rogers means a lot to me and Tom Hanks did an amazing job. I can't imagine anybody who could do it better.
I watched mr.Rogers as a child, and I don’t remember much, but as a parent I saw him a different way,it’s a tool for all parents and kids,it shows parents that it’s good to talk to kids on their level,we all can be a little blue,or angry or happy, and it’s ok to talk abt things,he also teaches everyone that each person is beautiful,I find it hard to believe that some one could be so nice, toms performance was incredible,I rank this movie next to Gump, excellent work, and the movie for those that viewed it ,I’m sure has opened their eyes,to be kind,

I smiled the whole time watching this interview. I loved it and I'm glad that they exist. I'm glad you all exist. Stay safe during these crazy days that we are all trying to get through.
And now I have a crush on Savannah Guthrie. She's endearing and open here. Great interview. The 20 minutes flew right by. Tom Hanks is a great talker. Of course.
I really enjoyed this interview! Thanks Savannah and Tom!
Great interview best I've ever seen.
Without guile...that was our Dear Mr. Rogers...can’t wait to see .the movie! Amazed at the wonderful acting of our dear Mr. Tom Hanks also! And although in my 80’s I’m still a little child who loves Mr. Rogers.
Tom was trying to demur when Savannah characterized him as a kind person, but she would have none of it. She pointedly called him out by saying “I’ve seen it in action”.
When was the last time you talk to somebody who insisted that you’re good, who refused to accept any explanation otherwise?
That is such a beautiful gesture. One of the highest compliments anybody can give.
1st minute... thumbs up.. just for the wonderful interaction between these two.
