  • Megyn Kelly sits down with Joanne Rogers, the widow of beloved children’s host Fred Rogers, and Nicholas Ma, son of cellist Yo-Yo Ma and a producer of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, the new documentary about Mr. Rogers. Ma talks about how Rogers “simply, quietly and elegantly” addressed such topics as race relations.

I know I am not alone in this......Mr. Rogers saved me......I grew up in a very abusive home, and had no Father in my life. Mr. Rogers came into my home every day and showed an angry, scared kid that it would be ok, and that there were good people in the world. His peaceful heart came into my life, and I learned kindness and goodness even while the world around me unraveled. I thank God for his influence in my life, and am proud that his legacy lives on in me. It will live on in my Son as well, and that says more than any other words I can share. Love you Daddy Rogers! You are an inspiration!

I think I understand a little of how you feel, as my father was not exactly a role model.
After the divorce, he and his family hated me and my mom in often very twisted ways.
A mayor influence for me wasn't TV, but a kind teacher, Rose, who had green numbers tattooed on her arm, and yet who could not hate, despite how her family was turned into soap, when she was a child.
Looking back, Rose & Fred Rogers both conversed with children, instead of talking down to them...

He did bring it up sometimes, but only when he felt it appropriate. His first TV role was a more religious program and they sang Christian songs and stuff. He has mentioned his faith in some interviews but not much more than saying Jesus's lesson of love above all else was his inspiration. I think he was so in tune to the fact that religion didn't matter, we are all capable of unconditional love for one another. When you bring religion to the forefront of that conversation, it detracts the message and divides the audience.

Shortly after Fred passed away, Joanne edited a book of Fred's quotes and thoughts. At the time, I was working at a network radio news operation, and - on a family visit to Pittsburgh - thought I'd try to interview her for a radio feature. She agreed, and asked what I was doing in Pittsburgh. I told her I was visiting my little brother, who had Down Syndrome, and loved Misterogers. I told her that he loved all the songs. "Then we can do the interview at my place," she said, "and please bring your brother." After the interview, she took my brother's hand and led him to the piano, sat down, and played several of Fred's songs. My brother sang along, with a smile that brightened the room. Earlier this week, I saw the movie, and she was sitting in their home, and that same piano was behind her. When I saw it, I let out a gasp and wept. Words cannot describe the depth of love and admiration I have for Fred and Joanne Rogers. See this movie. It will make you rethink your life and remind you that life is all about love - or the absence of it.

Chuck D's All-New Classic TV Clubhouse Friend, you either know nothing about Mr Roger’s spiritual beliefs, or you know absolutely zero about the teachings of Christ!!! Fred was a universalist, not a Christian. He believed that all people were saved, the antithesis of what Jesus Christ teaches! Only one example of his errors in understanding. Unbelievable!

Mister Rogers was a true disciple of Christ without sounding preachy. He was an amazing man. I think it is good show for parents to watch to help them with raising children. Didi G I don't think that was their point. Their point is he embodied and practiced what Jesus preached, and it's not a surprise, as he was a Presbyterian ordained minister. Most people don't embody their beliefs but he did.

The Bible teaches us that God is Love. You will find that in 1 John 4:8. Jesus taught that the Second Great Commandment (after loving God) is to love they NEIGHBOR as thyself. That's where the "neighborhood" came from. Fred preached the Gospel and God's love every minute of his life. On rare occasions, he even used words. But he made certain to include people of all faiths - including yours Omar, as part of his beloved neighborhood. Won't you be our neighbor?

I was so bullied as a child, and I often felt alone. Mr. Rogers was my friend. He never knew that he made such an impact. I made it through such dark times knowing that he really did like me. I feel now that his sincerity came through so strongly that although in my mind I knew he didn't know me, I so desperately needed his words and believed him; that I was special and had worth just the way I was. He understood me in my childhood frailty. Amazing.

People have a capacity for spirituality. It is a real need. It does not make them dupes. Mr. Rogers apparently had Bill Nye on his show. I would call Mr. Rogers a holistic educator. Science, music, art, love, spirituality, etc., etc. That is Mr. Rogers.

Something I have great respect for about Fred Rogers is that he didn't strut around with his chest puffed out and a big cross emblazoned across it. He clearly opposed divisiveness. He wouldn't let any such identity get in the way of his true goal, which was to help people learn that they can be kinder, more understanding, and recognize a world that can be imperfect but truly beautiful in its ups and its downs. I think he took his own ideology to bigger and better places than it had been before. I consider him to be a great humanist for the way he conducted himself with such compassion, as a remarkably wonderful person.

Fred Rogers, a truly beautiful soul, a beautiful person, and a beautiful neighbor. His influence on many generations can’t be matched by anyone today, I truly don’t think. A selfless man who delivered the message of peace, love, tolerability, and friendship to many generations of children, and adults through television for decades, something that no one will ever be able to do today. We only wish he was still with us today, when the world needs more of him more than ever today, an unmatched legend and legacy. Rest in heaven to an amazing soul named Fred Rogers. YES. I feel as though a lot of the children's shows from my generation (I'm 23) were all about being fast-paced and loud. Maybe I just didn't find the right channels, but other than a couple shows on PBS, nothing really struck me as wholesome and educational as Mr. Rogers.

Mr. Rogers taught my generation love, compassion, empathy and so many other lessons that were not routinely taught in my home when I was little. He is greatly missed and his widow is such a beautiful soul, as was her husband. We don’t have such enriching programming now for earlier generations... I am so honored to be able to watch the documentary ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I think so too. There is a more significant impact when children connect with an actual person as opposed to a cartoon. The kids don’t even know that an actual person taught all of these lessons when they are watching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood because it is a cartoon.

Moments later I turned on the radio and that was when I learned he had died. I live in Pittsburgh and he is a local legend here. Wrote him a letter. He wrote me back. Very personalized and lengthy; based on the content of my letter to him. I was 33 at the time. My sister saw my autographed picture of him inscribed to me and said oh the girls (her daughters) would LOVE this. Wrote him again. He wrote me back to say he would be happy to write them with a photo for each of them. He did. In his letter to my nieces he talked about how lucky they were to have an aunt like me. He is what I fondly refer to as an Uber-Soul. I think about him and cry which I really have to get over because he wouldn't want me to. Thank goodness for reruns right? Love you fellow Neighbors!

I just can’t say enough good about Mr. Rogers. I cried when he died and I still tear up when I see video of him. The tears are bittersweet.
I watched his show all the time. My mother would encourage me to watch it. She loved Mr. Rogers, too, and found him to be wonderful with young children.
I believe that Mr. Rogers influenced my interactions with my young students (K-2), my godchildren and my great-nieces and great-nephews. Like Mr. Rogers, I always told my kids the truth, even if it was unpleasant and scary. I was there to answer their questions, calm their fears, and comfort them if need be. They need to learn in a safe and gentle way that life can be hard and scary sometimes, but that they can get through it either by themselves or with the guidance of a trusted adults. Children are capable of a lot more than most adults give them credit for.

That's what he thought, too. What's interesting is that he conceived of the idea that TV was a real relationship to a child. That's why he went about his business like he did, with the gentle tone and pace suitable for younger children. He tried to provide a safe space for kids to be quiet and thoughtful, as opposed to the loud raucous crap that's everywhere. Guess we have an appetite for crap.
