Bobwhites are partridges that are native to North America and Central America, they constitute the genus Colinus, their closest living relatives are the wood partridges (genus Dendrortyx), both genera belong to the subfamily Dendrortyginae (New World Partridges), partridges and quails are gamebirds that constitute the superfamily Perdicoidea, which is divided into two families, the new world Odontophoridae and the old world Perdicidae, Odontophoridae is further split into the subfamilies Dendrortyginae (New World Partridges) with the genera Colinus and Dendrortyx and Odontophorinae (New World Quails) with the genera Philortyx, Oreortyx, Callipepla, Rhynchortyx, Cyrtonyx, Dactylortyx, and Odontophorus, while Perdicidae is further split into the subfamilies Coturnicinae (Old World Quails) with the genera Ophrysia, Perdicula, Coturnix, Anurophasis, and Synoicus and Perdicinae (Old World Partridges) with the genera Lerwa, Ptilopachus, Alectoris, and Perdix, out of the total of eighteen genera of partridges and quails, only six genera (Colinus, Dendrortyx, Lerwa, Ptilopachus, Alectoris, and Perdix) are called partridges, whereas the other twelve genera (Philortyx, Oreortyx, Callipepla, Rhynchortyx, Cyrtonyx, Dactylortyx, Odontophorus, Ophrysia, Coturnix, Anurophasis, and Synoicus) are called quails, members of the Perdicoidea superfamily are also sometimes referred to as true partridges and quails to distinguish them from partridge-like or quail-like gamebirds that belong to different families under the Galli suborder, which includes all living gamebirds other than guineafowl, curassows, guans, chachalacas, pollopavos, and megapodes.
