As already mentioned elsewhere, if you just want the drone to follow you, then Litchi has a better and more reliable mode for doing this called "Follow Me" mode. It works better than the "Track" mode in this case. It actually follows the controller GPS and not you, plus you do not need to draw a box around yourself. This also works great when following a bike, motorcycle, car, boat, etc., just as long as the controller is also along for the ride. However in the case of following a moving vehicle, you will need to stay under a certain speed. Also it is recommended to have the drone far and high enough away to keep you centered (experiment to see what minimim distance works best for you). With the Litchi "Follow Me" mode you can even go behind large objects (that completely hide you) and it will continue to track you. You can also select which angle to have it follow you. I prefer this method of tracking, because I am more at easy knowing that the drone will always be locked on. However, keep a close eye on a drone that does not have obstacle avoidance such as the Mini or Mini 2, otherwise your drone may hit something.
Hello from Switzerland.. very nice videos. Just one important thing.. I bought app Litchi, but is this app work only with VR goggles? I can’t sea camera cos it’s say all the time about VR goggles.. thanks for advice
Hi guys, Greetings from Norway. Thank for the tips! The only thing I feel is weird when I do this is that the controller is hard to hide, making the footage kind of "artificial". For my solo work, hiking, I need the drone to keep tracking me, without me holding/using/showing the controller. Then the options are third party, or wait for the M3 and hope DJI offer multiple tracking options. Keep up the good work!
@@54DegreesNorth Thanks for the comment! Really cool name you have, my buddy and I have a channel called 60 degrees adventures :-). Yeah, need a solid active track to catch the big scenes on my upcoming summer adventure as I will hike for several weeks on a remote Island, with scenes almost like "Lord of the rings" profile. Can't wait!
@@54DegreesNorth Tracking is software feature, so there is no reason why the mini 2 shouldn't have it, except marketing. Since it is considered a low end drone and so will be the mini 3. I wouldn't hold my breath on the mini 3 getting tracking.
@@ColdieHU i thought I’d read somewhere it was to have it, but to be honest I would probably just stick with the mini 2 anyway, I’d be happy to pay for the software upgrade if DJI decides to go that that route though
I've got a mini 2 and am going to upgrade to the mini 3. The primary reasons are the active track and the fact the viewing panel is built into the control unit.
Jeven, tracking is not very good with Litchi, however using the Follow option works perfectly. The Follow option locks onto the GPS in the controller and never loses it, even if you disappear behind trees.
I’m not sure about Litchi, but the software called Maven has the ability to do follow me by using the GPS coordinates of either of the remote controller or the phone. In the videos it seems to work well.
Hi I have enjoyed watching your video but I am confused because the company says that the app does not work with the mini 4K however the mini 4K and the mini 2 are basically the same drone aren't they?
The app works with mini se and mini 2. It doesn’t work for mini 2 se even though it’s the same drone as DJI have stopped releasing SDK software which enables the app to code the drones. So it may be the same drone but its software locked and without the SDK you can’t use it for follow
Hi Jeven, great vid as I was going to download the app to try but I won’t bother now, will DJI be able to add active track through a software update in the future or is it just not possible ??
it isnt really possible because they removed lots of sensors which can help with active track so it could weigh under 250 grams. thats why this drone is a great starter drone
Hi, Jeven! Thank you for video. Please, tell, what is your favourite gimbal settings on the Mini-2 in each of the modes? And do it works well on Mini-3 into the bargain?
@@JevenDovey It really works well. I've done cycling and hiking with it. What's really cool is when you use Litchi Tether then the drone will follow another mobile device which makes it easier to 'hide'. But then you need a second person to pilot.
I was literally looking yesterday at these! Deciding if I should carry it on my Appalachian Trail thru hike for different shots. Do you know how much it weighs with just the drone, 1 battery, controller and charger? Thanks Jeven!
Wishing you ATB on your epic journey on AT. Minimum weight as you stated would be about 1.5Lb. But AT doesn't allow drone flights above its trail lands. So you'll have a very limited opportunity to fly it.
Set your controller to cinematic, and set it to the speed you will run, for example. Walk the same speed and you can take longer shots with manual tracking.
This video mostly makes me insane that DJI doesn't just update the firmware or something so it's built in. They have to be blocking it intentionally, right? To create separation in product?
Hi from Canada, got and idea, i will love if Dji do a update in there software and use a part of the quickshot, like the green square to put the drone focus on you and than you choose a timer like 10 , 15 , 20 sec. of tracking and maybe a warning saying look your surrounding and press OK

DJI won't add active-track (optical) or follow-me (GPS) because of their warranty. People will think it avoids obstacles and crash it. Then ask for a new drone, which they won't get, and DJI gets a bad name. Of course people who know how to fly ( like children) will use the sensors they are born with: their eyes and brain. Unfortunately most DJI Mini people lack those sensors. They only have money and never learned to fly properly without GPS and get skills like orientation. And yes of course it is ridiculous a hikers/bikers drone does not have either active-track or GPS. Now they are trying other quickshot 'hacks' and crash it even more often. Wouldn't it be nice to have a specially dedicated follow-me drone for a budget? Trust me, the Chinese easily can for $200. All technology is already there on cheap toy drones. They just need to put it in one package. Simple front sensor, 2k camera, reasonably good quality camera, small and silent possible, safe prop guards, audio sounds to hear where it is, controller with built-in GPS instead of a clumsy phone......
