On the software side, there is no reason for not to add "active track" feature to mini and mini 2 (with a small update). But the company doesn't want to take responsibility for the crashes during active track due to lack of sensors. Great tip by the way.
Even the air 2s doesn't have sensors that detect left and right which seem to be most needed for active track. The Mavic 2 is the only one with that. I had forward obstacle sensing on my original Mavic and had to turn it off most of the time due to false alarms due to sun glare. I really wish the mini 2 had active track.
@@Zephxual that would make sense if it wasn't for the global new rules that basically limit everyone to buy a mini 2 unless they want to get a drone flying license

I wish the Mini's had active track. I did however learn this method on my own, but the tips you suggested are sound and I agree with them. One other way I've found to follow me in my car is to use boomerang quickshot and simply lock on the car, drive (slowly) and just hold forward on the flight stick to keep the drone flying forward. It will inherently fly behind the object and stay locked on with no interference to break the lock. I did this for almost a mile, but it stopped because of home point distance fault.
Yeah it's sad it doesn't have it, I just assumed it would have it for sure. I'll try your way, hope it works for bikes. If it doesn't maybe id regret buying it
Bought the mini 2 today not realizing it doesn't have active tracking or sensors. Bit pissed about it, should have jumped on RUclips in the shop and had a look. Thanks for this video.
Interesting. Would love Active Tracking on the Mini 2 - that would make it truly great indeed. Quick question: Would the settings for gimbal (yaw/pitch/speed etc) affect the QuickShots using this method? Cheers, Al

Tried this over the weekend, tracking boats on a lake.. got some great shots and effects shooting boats that changed directions as the Mini 2 was trying to track a circle.
Good news! DJ I just told me they will be sending over the SDK to the litchi app folks. I then asked lychee when they thought they were going to have the software ready and they said beta version by mid-January! If it's like all the other versions, you're going to have waypoints and all the follow me modes! Woohoo
While trying this hack out today Matt, it lost me a couple of times ( as expected , I was also walking thru some shadows etc which is great for confusing it ). On the final attempt something strange but cool happened, I was walking a little too slow so it started to go into the anticlockwise circle ( with the camera tracking me anticlockwise )as it passed over head, but i sped up slightly so then it went into a circle behind me , all while tracking me ( camera now tracking me CLOCKWISE) into the distance as i kept walking. Have you experienced this? Looked pretty cool.
The two obvious reasons for DJI to not include AT in the Mini2 are 1) the drone has basically no obstacle avoidance and b) there have to be enough differentiators for their marketing department to work with to sell the bigger sister models. By and large though, the Mini2 is probably still the best bang for the buck when it comes to drones, and with the upcoming SDK it will be even better (I'm hoping for programmable GPS waypoints in the not so distant future...)
Takes some practice, but for short "follow me" active track simulation it works ok. Still anxiously awaiting the SDK to drop later in the year and Litchi to pick it up and add "real" follow-me tracking like they did for the Mavic Mini.

I still don't get why they don't add a "Use at your own risk" type of active tracking. It could easily track cars, people etc out on fields, if set on a appropiate height and clear space (like a field).
Because they make enough money from their other major drones, to not have to compensate an 'un-needed risk' for the budget friendly customers. Its also not like without active track, this drone is utter trash. Its still top tier product.

Bro, you can feel pretty well at ease imo, in using the Litchi software app for some of these features. When you are using Litchi there's no threat whatsoever if a fly away, being as the drone is always committed to the bind between the drone itself and the controller in your hands. Even if say for example, your phone has low performance specs and cannot keep up with the demand, worst that's going to happen is your connection on screen will suffer, or the feature you selected may not perform up to demand. You won't ever have a fly away or anything happening beyond the controller and your controlling it, ultimately being able to cancel or stop. Hope this is helpful, I use Litchi with the Mini 2 quite often and never had anything questionable to compromise the drones security or surroundings.
