That "natural" reverb effect with the gated mics is brilliant. I knew that the howling vocal at the end had some magical quality that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Now I know why.
It’s included in the UVI String Machines 2 plugins. I got that because of the ARP Omni II used on Joy Division’s “Closer” album, but I’m only realizing today that I’ve got the Heroes “bee’s knees” sound as well!!!!!!
No work of art has had more impact and influence on me than this track. The production is so brilliant. Visconti to me is second only to George Martin for his innovations. He's terribly underrated. Hearing these isolated tracks is wonderful. I never would have been able to pick them out otherwise.
Simply crazy, Bowie, Eno, Fripp and Visconti absolute geniuses but also the rest of the band is fundamental. This shows that "Heroes" is one of the greatest musical masterpieces of the '900.
S2S for me, with Low a close 2nd. Then again, I was 17, living alone for the first time & owning my own motorcycle. Life was extremely intense & those albums of 76/77 are burned deeply into my own solidifying psychic circuitry. Quite a line, 🤔
its true that some of the its a cheesy sound compared to todays' options, yet the timbre and instrumental mix with guitars with the harmonium and melodicas, melotron, chamberlain etc... so moody and perfect!! nice video.. this is a treasure! thanks for posting
Fripp came in later, well there goes the story i heard that Fripp gifted to riff/song structure to David i read that on the video where KC with Belew do an amazing cover of heroes-London 3rd July 2000)
Honestly, David's voice sounds a little raw, brittle, on the isolated vocal track. Still one of the most powerful songs I have heard. His voice got much better when he got off the drugs and recovered for a few years.
Fripps ebow and Wimborne guitar is ripping thru the track. David particularly inspired and lovely gated reverb courtesy of Viscontis mix. Alomar insistent rhythm guitar is funky yet direct as well.
@ripplebear, correct - no ebow there, jut Fripp using amp feedback to hold the sustain. A similar sound can be created overdriving a tube amp with compression and the sustain knob cranked all the way
When Tony says "the first interesting sound" ..then didn't point to the swimming bass, I felt just a tad snubbed for my 4-string brothers, gotta tell ya, had to be said. Is there more where he at least names the modulation effect?
Heroes was the first bowie album I bought in the 70`s. I thought it must have been a complex undertaking with bowie seated for hours on end writing sheet music. The truth is he didn't, he just cobbled it together from improvisations!
Have a listen to the single version on the German "Helden" - single version. Between the last "Dann sind wir helden" -chorus and just before the fade out, you can clearly hear the low pianochords hammering towards the end. Have a listen to it with earphones on! :)
Toni Visconti, co-producing this record, doing more than people think.
He does a good Derek and Clive too.
to quote captain america "I understood that reference"
You just reminded me of the worst job I ever had. 😉
Stuff it up yer bum.....!

I love the photos of Eno, Fripp, and Bowie from this recording session.
The one of Bowie with mustache is still pretty shocking. Like, oh yeah, Ziggy still had to shave.
That "natural" reverb effect with the gated mics is brilliant. I knew that the howling vocal at the end had some magical quality that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Now I know why.
That "Cheesy" Arp String Sound makes me weep.. I love it so much ..
Seriously, it IS the bee's knees even now.

Every time David worked with Tony Visconti and Brian Eno it was magic. Thank you guys.
Amazing how much went into this song. One of my all time favourites. So many geniuses worked on it.
god I would die to see him explain the process behind the entire album. my favorite album of all time

Quite a line, 🤔
Well-structured track, it all comes together beautifully!!!
This is Bowie’s Hey Jude or the Stones’s Sympathy For The Devil ..a total masterpiece.
Tony’s stories are always fascinating...
You should read his autobiography, 'Bolan, Bowie and the Brooklyn Boy', it's a great read and gives terrific insights into this genius producer life.
@@rozzgrey801 - Thank you! Tony is also a phenomenal bass player, too.
Tony Visconti putting together "Heroes." Fascinating, and it reveals how much an artist the producer was.
what an honour to have such genius explained to us all.
Masterpiece. I saw Eno's synthesizer.
"The bee's knees". One of the best Albums ever Made.Bowie,Eno,Fripp and Visconti.A masterpiece.
05:07 when u step on lego
Lol
THe world is less creative without Bowie
Cool I thought the girl was annoyed before realising she's feeding the track's
NO she was grooving to the music at one point.
I thought she was just working, but was more interested in what Visconti was saying.
Excellent production assistant making it look easy.
She is Erin Tonkon
@@Franky58135HA Yeah she was assistant engineer on his Blackstar album.
2:07 the girl is not annoyed, she's enjoying it. The David Bowie estate refuses to credit Robert Fripp for this performance.
He is credited and has always been.
@@ivankaramasov he is credited, but not on the publishing.
Thanks Mr Tony for professionalism, art, and wet eyes ...
Stax is in Memphis. I think he was referring to Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Tony is amongst the best music producers ever.
we are crying

Genius.
What more could you ask for? Bowie, Fripp and Eno
Fripp came in later, well there goes the story i heard that Fripp gifted to riff/song structure to David

Someone please tell Tony that Stax is in Memphis. Muscle Shoals is in Alabama. :)
Bowie used to write very sophiticated songs only! WOOW! Rich in each detail
I am CRYING
the synth at 00:57 is amazing
It's an EMS, I think (not sure) an AKS. And yes, it is amazing.
Celestial Fripp sound 👌
Honestly, David's voice sounds a little raw, brittle, on the isolated vocal track.
Still one of the most powerful songs I have heard.
His voice got much better when he got off the drugs and recovered for a few years.
he did that on purpose in the other tracks his voice sounds different.
Fripps ebow and Wimborne guitar is ripping thru the track. David particularly inspired and lovely gated reverb courtesy of Viscontis mix. Alomar insistent rhythm guitar is funky yet direct as well.
Actually I don't think that's an ebow there, just pure raw fuzz feedback!
@@ripplebear You are correct.
@ripplebear, correct - no ebow there, jut Fripp using amp feedback to hold the sustain. A similar sound can be created overdriving a tube amp with compression and the sustain knob cranked all the way
Robert fripp+david bowie=god
And Brian Eno
Nick Capone Certainly. I just love Eno’s own work of the era, truly magical.
@@ncapone87 Bingo!
So...this is the Tyrannosaurus Rex absolute miracle worker
The George Martin of the Beatles parallel.
I think I have all those sounds on my Roland Rs-70 FUN!
Excellent

Fripp was at the top of his handsomeness

'He', 'he', 'he'?
I bet the gate was the valley people dyna mite
That chick in the background just looks so out of place and seems like she wants to leave but is stuck.
The sound of the future made with guitar, bass and drums and a bit of dodgy old synth
They are all Heroes.
Someone make a movie about the Bowie/Eno sessions just so Fred Armisen can play Tony.
Very interesting!
The piano sound was barely audible, Bowie was just playing the chords? It sounds the left hand is also duplicating the driving bass line

Genius
Hey Dhr A Verzie, Thank you for posting this, but can you spell my name right? Tony.
I own a synthi, nothing better for drones
Fripp Bowie and Eno and the world is complete,,
When do the actual musicians play together. Lol
👍
It's a fucking lost art. smh
