I glad I'm not the only one who make mistakes spelling. I believe you meant reached and not rich there. I'm not knocking it brotha. I'm the worst speller ever. I'm great a math art and music, but I can spell good. It's good to see someone I look up to make the same mistakes.
Love ya man!
Thanks for all the help
The purple shirt was a good choice.
This song has mesmerized me since the first time I heard it during a late night road trip on my buddies old bootleg tape, Thanks Ian!!!!
good looks, brother. hard to play exactly like jerry. the man had more soul than any other guitarist i'm familiar with. that being said, this strategy creates a very solid approximation of his playing on this song. some of my favorite solos occurred during peggy-o
You are a rare and appreciated talent, here. Thanks for the time and effort you put forth. So smart.
Such a great sad song. The lyrics plus a great Jerry solo always gets me
Great Lesson. Been noodling around with this song for decades. I finally got serious a few months ago. Been working on The Dick's Picks 29 version from Fox Theatre Atlanta GA 5/19/77. I've had the recording since about 1981. I'm working on the finger picking. This lesson was very helpful. Thank you, Thank, Thank you!!!
The finger picking is getting better every day. Going from A major to The D major with the pinky (the way Jerry picks the base line in Peggy-O) is tough to get all the notes to ring out clearly. Maybe you can do a follow up in Peggy-O finger picking as there are not a lot of finger picking videos out there.
The 5/19/77 Peggy O is so good! You should check out 5/5/77 if you haven’t heard it. It may be my favorite they ever played :)
The most beautifulest song I ever learned. Thank you Mr. STITCH :)
I love your "teach a man to fish" approach. I'll be honored to contribute. Thanks so much.
Watching you for just a few minutes open up things up for me... thanks... first time I it all clicked in my head based on the way you laid it all out.
I'm not sure how difficult it is for you to edit in the chord changes the way you did during this video but it's really great when you do it as the chords change. I've watched a lot of your videos and this is the first one I have seen with this. So much better.
You’re doing a great job with these videos - thank you
Absolutely fantastic. Agreed on the purple shirt reference. Englishtown 77 my personal favorite. I have performed this song many times live and find this to be very helpful and enjoyable. Thank you.
Thank you Rabbi Stich!
Mind blown you always a great way of explaining not olny jerry garcia but the ways that make the guitar work thanks
and thank you stitch for everything you're doing!! You're lessons are great. Would love to see more that delve into jazz/theory territory if at all possible.
YES! Been waiting since you mentioned this...
Keep the series up,got here via sean
Great stuff
Great choice. Few songs more beautiful.
this is gonna be what i need to get to the next level. huge thanks
.... good video...... this supremely challenging, no doubt
Another stonking lesson from one of the best on RUclips ;-)
I use my Roku to watch your videos on my LCD TV and it looks great nice high definition easy to look at clear and crisp. Chord tones my new focus with playing Garcia songs. I will apply to other songs as well. Cheers!
4-16-78 best Peggy-o solo.
Agreed. I transcribed it all, will upload it to my main transcription channel
Hey Ian thanks so much for this, every where I look up the chords or any videos they always play it in G. Sounds good still but in A it sounds waayyyy better. Thanks agin for this and all the other help. Forever Grateful Forever Dead
Hey i know this is years later but jerry switched it from G to A in the early stages of this song. Probably because jerrys voice sounds sweeter in A and jerry does some fingerpicking embellishments over the A chord as he sings
@@herbythechef7624 better later than player haha thanks!!
Awesome insights! Thanks.
You do yourself a disservice. You have everything you describe in Jerry. I bet neither of you could do ANYTHING the other couldn't.
Heart !!!!! Your heart is contagious. And I don't play.
Can I say, I'm listening NOW, in England. Where are you replying from ?
Florida, US
@@StichMethodGuitar Still listening. You play/teach so well. I'll also check out the documentary.
Last thing. Does Garcia rank up alongside Mark Knopler and, say, Mike Rutherford ? Players I'm more familiar with. I'm trying to get some perspective. I'm currently more mainstream.
Great work by the way. Thanks
@@neilnoble1771 hey bud, just thought I would say something about it ... I happen to love Mark Knoppfler by the way ... I seriously do.
But Jerry is on an entirely different system of trying to measure quality and ability. He plays more emotion into his music than anyone I have ever heard ... the only way to really put it out there with improvisation is to drop the ego and see what happens ... sometimes it is truly Magic. You need to find the on fire really good versions of some of the tunes and try and get to know them. Sooner or Later it will sound different and catch you ... before you know it we will be seeing you ar a show someplace =]
this is a bob dylan adaption of an auld scots sang......bonnie lass o fyvie'o.....his title fennario.
great stuff thanks
Inside the mind of....
JIMMY HERRING !!
Come on Ian! I know you dig him.
Nails Jerry’s tone
Love what you do with these lessons!
I think the first F# minor scale on the chart should start with the root on the 14th fret not the 13th. btw your lessons are great!
Impeccable video.
Look at the beard grow..nice,,,You will look like Jerry one day,and thats a good thing...thanks for lessons.
Excellent - thanx
Would I be out of line to ask how can you play we can run by the Grateful Dead on guitar?
Your fingers and hands are very much like Jerry's, I met him in 1971:)
Fantastic
great stuff!!!!
would you have any advice / practice exercises or tools in order to get better at keeping time while soloing in order to not miss the changes or hit them more accurately. just keeping time in general. I guess.
GRACIAS! Long live Jerrys music
Great lesson. Have you done one on Brokedown Palace?
Appreciate your insights! Prefer that you post the chords like you did the last part instead of calling out the chords so I could listen to the notes and see the chords on the screen. worked better for me! Cheers!
Hi Ian, glad I came across this video again. I just bought scale and tone chart! Looking forward to practicing. Quick question. I've got the pentatonic scales down, but haven't practiced the major scales much. Can I use the major pentatonic scales instead? Seems to me it would still work, as they still have the chords tones. Just wanted to double check.
Hey man, I love your videos. You've really helped me a lot. But one thing that I wanted to mention is that in the beginning, when you're talking about Jerry soloing to the chord tones of the A to D change, it sounds and looks to me like E mixolydian, i.e. the fifth of A. In fact a lot of Jerry solos and a number of Dead tunes sound to me like Mixolydian... happy to hear any thoughts. Keep it up. thanks.
Ian, Dark Star Orchestra is coming to my neck of the woods this summer. I've never gotten into the Grateful Dead but your videos have more than intrigued me. Would DSO be a band you'd recommend seeing? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
They went to the show and got lost in the tide
They went and threw away their phone and went on tour
Still a great video cheers Ian
This is what I wanted to ask you. Can you use the blues note (like you would in the pentatonic) for the Major and Minor full scales. I know from another video that you can use in in the Myxolodian mode because that sound bluesy. But can you use it in the Dorian, or Lydian?
I can't figure out why the Lydian has the blue note in it... Maybe tomorrow when my mind is fresh. I'm going to assume that it also works for the Phyrigian, and I'm guessing that it doesn't for Locrian. Thanks a lot for the answer.
Aloha brotha,
I'm not able to get to my guitar right now or later. I really wanna learn this song.
Can you please put a thanks for watching, so I can find it again easier.
Please! I still have got my Qtron plus pedal. As soon as I do I would love to get a few lessons a month. I need you to hear me play, so you can decide where I'm at as far as a guitarists.
Mahalo brotha
At 13:44....does that minor shape have a name? Or just total anarchy?
Using a pick or no?
Thanks Stich! Just download the PDF. I don't know why, but I keep landing on G# rather than C# for the soloing. Seems my ear just brings me to that. But it still sounds like it fits?
At what part? Haven’t watched this video in a long long time. But if it sounds good, do it
@@StichMethodGuitar maybe because G# is the 5th in the C# scale so that makes it sound like it fits. Either way, I need to learn the chord tones throughout these scale shapes. In this video, it's A, D, F#m, C#m. I'll keep workin' at it! My solo living room concerts are starting to sound much better these days. :)
best dead song you never hear
Beautiful thank you for sharing
Here Here. . .... Hear . =]
So how do you make your mind move fast enough to plat the chord tones of the changes?
That is coming real soon!
practice
:-)
great lesson Ian.Are you still focusing in landing and starting on root notes?
Loved the video! I found you while attempting to understand the fingerpicking and which chord inversions he uses. Why did you choose that lower voicing of the C#m? after watching a few videos, it seems he used the Am shape for the C#m. I love the voicing of the Cm shape barre chord you are essentially using, but you are correct, it's a bitch to play, especially that low on the neck. anyways, you taught that very well. wasn't what i was looking for, but a very nice bonus during my search. ... and yes, I found peace with my fingerpicking search. Now i just got to find someone to sing it.
In the mind of Michael Schenker: anything solo would be awesome if you felt like it. I really like the Jimmy Page ocean one
Am I mistaken? I bought your course and assumed the charts came with it including peggy-o. Please advise.
+Michael Morris what course did you buy? I have a Peggy O chart they accompanies this lesson. As in, how to do this lesson in several places. Did you purchase that and not get it? Or were you looking for something else.
hmmmmm - I sent you like $10 or something for a course (I thought there was only one) - guess I'm mistaken ... Navigating your stuff is a little challenging, but ultimately worth it
+Michael Morris was it the blues master class? I just want to make sure you got everything you paid for. Feel free to email me at StichMethod@gmail.com . I really don’t mind answering questions for anyone who supports the channel. Just let me know if you have any more questions.
the beard is looking voluptuous. and the guitar playing is nice too
Cool lesson! Why change the scale anyway? All chords fit into the A major tonality... ok, Jerry might do it like this, but doesn't it make unnecessarily complicated for beginners?
In the mind of.
I've recently discovered both Jerry Garcia and this guy. I get Jerry was a great guitarist. Okay, but why was he any better than this tuitor ? I can't play guitar. And my love of music far supersedes my knowledge of the subject. This man does everything Jerry could. What's the difference ???? Anyone as passionate and knowledgeable as this man I find so fascinating. This man is as good as Garcia, Clapton, etc, right ?
Neil Noble experience, ideas, time and heart. Watch the Amazon documentary and it will show you how much he played.
Neil Noble Jerry is like Michael Jordan and this guy is the best guy on the court when you drive by your local park. I’m the guy who can’t make a shot from the hoop in my driveway. I hope this explains it.
@@chrisc2756 THANKS
When are minor chords used for the 4th and 5th?
When you are in a minor key
I'll be referring to major keys as William Spears said it for minor
4th: used for a minor plagal cadence (Nowhere Man and In My Life by The Beatles, creep by Radiohead, etc.).
5th: Mixolydian mode
Great Job.... PLEASe teach and emphasize the melody! It's the launching pad for the improv.
would you consider Jerry one of the top 25 guitar players of all time?
jonno63 jjg is that top ten fer
You would do well to consider that they are ALL playing on his stage.
Putting him into top 25 or whatever number group would give people the idea that he has company.
So could I use myxolidian
StichMethod Guitar ok I didn't have the guitar in my hand when I left the comment. Yeah it doesn't fit as well as a major
What does the triangle in your chart mean?
Keith Tidwell it is the minor third of the A , I discuss this concept in the vid. When he is coming home to the A, he uses the minor third to add some spice.
Nevermind, I didn't see/read the comment under it at first
all good, hope you like the chart and the results. Rock on and thanks for the support.
Isn't this song more properly called Fennario?
Tablature Butler no its called Peggy O
+Robert- Guess you didn't read my second comment. Or if you did - feel free to explain where I'm mistaken...
👍👍
I would love to learn Hell in a Bucket, but half of the video Bobby's part and what Jerry's doing. Then you can add Jerry's solo or have it set up to pay to learn Jerry's solo. I'm not making any money on happy hour gigs. Hawaii well Maui and Oahu passed a law you aren't allowed inside anywhere without the Covid-19 vaccine. You have to not only get a the card, but to work inside of anywhere. You have to have your doctor put it in the computer base. I'm 💯% disabled. I got hit walking a boy to the store. While I was back in Ohio on visit.
I got hit by a car doing 45-55mph at least because no ones knows because he was high and nodded out as he was driving.
It broke my back and both legs. Spit my head open too. I couldn't have surgery for 8 hours or have much pain meds because I couldn't go to sleep with a concussion. So I'm pretty bored playing the same stuff. I don't get out because I'm still in a lot of pain. I'm on SSDI witch I was a Tattoo artist. That's being self employed and I didn't claim to be making a lot. I thought I would be Tattooing in my 80's and have about 5 shops. I only made it to owning two shops. Anyway I need your help finding my love that I've always had for playing music. Hell yeah!
Even finding you love for music. I had a chance, but I couldn't do it. I loved playing in front of people. I couldn't go though with everything that I had to do to make it. I would have made it to 27 years old. I need your help and advice.
Please!
think your great but what about in the mind of Gary Moore?
Rob Reiner rocks.
ah,, apologies should have watched the whole thing before commenting
I always thought they played this in G...
awesome, I love this song! Check out this version for one of the most beautiful Jerry solos my ears have had the pleasure of hearing. archive.org/details/gd1975-06-17.aud.unknown.87560.flac16 Recording isn't great, but its a legendary show as it's the first one after their hiatus in 74
Question:"Whatcha playin'?" Answer: "Some arpeggios" Shout to 3rd person:"I think he said the song's called Peggy O!"
nice I've always loved this song.got an awesome version on one of my dicks picks can't remember the volume but it's 76.solos every couple verses it's amazing.
D Picks 29. It's hands down the best version. It's 5/19/77 at the Fox Theatre Atlanta GA. Jerry throws in a second solo near the end of the song.
Jeff S I'll definitely check that one.found mine is dicks twenty 9-25-76 landover MD.can't see anything topping it.4 killer solos in this one
I'm going to buy it now. Wow 4 solos! I'll let you know if i find it.
Jeff S yeah.it's awesome worth checking out.want to find the version you were talking about too.wonder if relisten has that show I'll have to check
I just downloaded Dicks Pick Vol 20 From Amazon for $24.00. They have Volume 29 too, That's where I got it. You should check it out. I'm Listening as I write this. Great Peggio or (Peggy-O) I'm glad you suggested it. Three more solos to hear for the first time comin' up!
i hate when you point with your MIDDLE finger. is this some kinda passive aggressive message?
it’s just nice to be able to do some things Jerry couldn’t
