rooferkim i am so glad you found and like The National. My mother is 71 and likes them, my daughter is 22 and saw them live last night for the third time in the last three years. They are without question my absolute faves, after 15 + years of listening they still [implorable emotions] make my eyes water!
Yours is the best comment I have read on RUclips, in like, the longest time. Thank you, my friend. The National have been my absolute favourite band for a decade and yet today - 7th November 2019 - is the first time I've ever landed on this song! I've since learned that it's an ode to a long-ago Scottish song, but Matt's voice and the boys musical arrrangement, is over-welmingly - beautiful. Long may you keep enjoying them, as I do.
this is an auld scots sang(bonnie lass o fyvie'o) that bob dylan adapted in the early 60s. he also adapted another scots sang......farewell to tarwathie to farewell angelina. he also adapted another scots sang.....the road and the miles to dundee to the walls of redwing. he also adapted another 4 scots sangs.
I got to experience this performance in person. I don't have much for words, but it was amazing. It's better heard in this video/clip, but the atmosphere that night was amazing. Huddle up among like-minded music-loving humans, in between concert stages (even though this was the only going on), and very little wind in the bottom of a river-bed near the Chippewa River.
I've seen these guys 5 times, and each night I saw them was amazing in its own right. Having said that, I've always wanted to hear this rendition of Peggy-O live, what a treat for those who got to experience this.
This song!!! Wow and what a PERFORMANCE!! I cannot listen to this once; I have to re-listen at least twice. Goosebumps every time. Man. APPLAUSE for the band!
I am just moved and blown away with tears streaming down my cheeks. The sound ,the emotions of this guy...I wasn't expecting this. i had forgotten about this Civil War Song( I've heard it was originally Scottish) until I recently watched a clip of Lead Guitarist G. E. Smith of Saturday Night Live House Band in the 70's talking about first meeting Bob Dylan. Then weirdly enough I came upon one of the The Grateful Dead Versions just 2 days ago and now THIS. I am 68 , played (piano) and have listened to many versions of many Songs from long ago to present. But NEVER something this Hauntingly beautiful. Thank you for transporting me back to The Civil War Days (or to Scotland), a true love lost , and s broken Heart best 7 mins and 12 seconds in quite a long time. An excellent surprise. Love this and will share with many Thanks for Posting this !
it's an adaptation of a scottish sang called the bonnie lass o fyvie'o. a think bob dylan was the first to arrange it ."fennario" he also used other scots melodies for more of his sangs.
I’ve heard many versions and interpretations of this song and I’d have to say this band does a fantastic version. The vocals are clear for a live performance and the guitar work superb. Excellent upload.
this reminds me of when i saw the National live this year for their "sleep well beast" tour. Matt forgot the lyrics to 'i need my girl' and he screamed into the Mic "I CAN REMEMBER" I wanna go back to that night.
I will always regret not going to this concert when i had the chance. Its still my favorite live version of this song . No matter how many times I've seen them live .
Thinking of a lovely friend who passed this week. Fly high Catherine, you were one of the nicest that I had the pleasure of having met. An extraordinary woman that was called way to early.
My dad introduced me to The National at a young age and we grew up listening to them together. I've for some reason always known since the first time I heard this cover that I want it to be my father-daughter dance with him at my wedding. Can't wait for that moment.
I love this song. And what an incredible interpretation! Never heard of The National before I found this. Comments are accurate. Heart wrenching and beautiful!
who exactly gave this thumbs down? Gee...what a masterpiece, and I just learned that Kaufman did an album with Bob Weir a few years back - Blue Mountain - just bought it a second ago - that's gonna be good, if this is any clue...
Yes. Yes it does, and the dirt and grime and pain and longing and fears and regrets all wash down my cheeks and collide where she used to kiss me.., hoping she’ll come home soon and kiss me again.
@@elaztec.azteccaYes it DOES make me tear up. A beautiful rendition of a well loved song. But your comment crushed my heart to pieces while the tears flow freely , more than they have in so long. Heard the acoustic cover of this Grateful Dead original first and then this a couple of years ago and was blown away. It’s the crescendo half way though that gets me!
This and the first year might've been the strongest years. '15 was a low-key tribute to The Dead with 90% of the bands in lineup featured on the Day of the Dead comp. I heard a fair amount of them doing those covers at ExC. The collaborative efforts also made it the most energetic of years. Of course each year has something amazing to it - seeing John Prine in the pouring rain was a one of a kind experience!
This is dope by all measure, that guitar solo notwithstanding. But what I really like, is when your man walks off after laying the vocal down for the first measured bit of the song there, then he quenches his thirst. I feel it was a still well-iced drink. I felt those ice cubes hit my own teeth. It was watery; the drink was watered down. It was likely whiskey and water. Or a watery whiskey. I want that it was.
heartbreaking and so true...a young poor soldier on his way to war falls in love but is rejected for his lack of funds then loses his life and is barely mourned....300 years old or did it happen yesterday..??
Timeless . I wonder if he ever could've imagined for one min -- that his story would be so loved ,and still told over and over and over again . 300 year later we are still a sensitive ,human race - mourning his ,heartbreaking loss and feeling his pain....
He sang this song like he was possessed by the soul of a brokenhearted ghost
10/10 no one else should cover this again.
It's a traditional song. Everyone should cover it.
Great comment. Wow!
Love this…but just saying that Vampire Weekend did a pretty good job.
I'm 70 and thought I'd seen and heard eveything musical. This is an incredible find.

The National are one of America's greatest 21st Century bands.
This song is a heartbreaker and this version just gives me goosebumps. Matt's voice is in my top 3 of all time.
what's your top 3? :) I really love Andy Hull and Gregory Isakov, together with Matt
The guitars on this are just immense. The Dessners are talented beyond belief

❤❤ I never knew and here I am in the historic city of Edinburgh next door to a guy with a helicopter 🚁 🏰❤❤🎶🎶
His voice - pure velvet.
Matt's voice is a panties dropper.
Please remind me to quote you, the next time people say men are shallow :D
I still can't believe I was there live watching this. And the way this video was shot is incredible. Just wow
Matt is a superb vocalist. Long may he continue.
isn't it so freakin amazing how many songs the dead introduced us to...well done here....
Horay yes. This is one of my favorite of theirs. What a find.

To quote "life of brian" ... you lucky, lucky bastard! ❤
What a sound. Its the whole package. Haunting, deliberate, complex and totally unique. The National has to be the best band out of Cincy EVER!!!
this breaks me into pieces
@filippo barbetta I sounds like William O is threatening war crimes for being jilted by Peggy O. Or is that just internal monologue on his behalf?

Haunting yet soulful and beautiful rendition. You can feel it surrounding your body. A++++++++
I was there and this was my first time seeing The National. As a big deadhead, I found a strong connection with the band as they played this
On my 300th listen. Just brilliant.
I'm getting there myself 😅
Possibly my favorite Grateful Dead cover. A true chill bumps song. Thank you, Corrie Folk Trio, for putting inspiration for this song into the world.
Sorry but this is not a grateful dead song. The song is hundreds of years old .The grateful dead does a nice job covering this classic .
Listening with headphones on.. beautiful.
Fantastic ... THE NATIONAL give Life Again to this very old song ...

He messed up these lyrics too -first line is “we marched on” not rode??/. Still really good

So on love with Beringer. Amazing voice! Saw him last night with Bob Weir & John Mayer. Great show!
What a tone on that guitar! Who says that a "guitar band" cannot make original and different sounding music
Absolutely 💯 love guitar music. The Dessner brothers are just so good, though.
