Bonnie Dobson, The Grateful Dead, Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart, Robert Plant, The Allman brothers, and now The National--They all have done justice to this song. It just shows what an amazing song it is.
Pure magic. The cover version has always succeeded when it sounds like it would be performer's own song. The War On Drugs and The National made the best versions to this collection.
5 years late, but I've done this multiple times in those 5 years and keep coming back to it if I'm ever struggling to sleep. It was probably your comment that gave me the idea in the first place, so, thanks!
Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey Walk me out in the morning dew today I can't walk you out in the morning dew, my honey I can't walk you out in the morning dew today I thought I heard a baby cry this morning I thought I heard a baby cry today You didn't hear no baby cry this morning You didn't hear no baby cry today Where have all the people gone, my honey? Where have all the people gone today? There's no need for you to be worried about all those people You don't never see those people anyway I thought I heard a young man mourn this morning I thought I heard a young man mourn today I thought I heard a young man mourn this morning I can't walk you out in the morning dew today Walk me out in the morning dew, my honey Walk me out in the morning dew today I'll walk you out in the morning dew, my honey I guess it doesn't matter anyway I guess it doesn't matter anyway I guess it doesn't matter anyway I guess it doesn't matter anyway
So pumped about this album. Love their version of this. Starts like it's coming from a monster Wharf Rat or Terrapin. Nice work National. Can't wait to hear the rest
"you are not of my blood" -- seriously, the most "hey, this should be a true detective theme song" song if I've ever heard one. But yeah, this is a killer track :)
'Morning Dew, by The National, from the forthcoming 'Day of the Dead' tribute to Grateful Dead. Released 20th May on 4AD, with all profits going to Red Hot Organization.
+Mad Mack 4 AD, like, as in...the year 4, after Christ-?? I seriously have ZERO fuckung idea what you're on about, but know this: if you're laughing at me, well, better just remember where you left your groceries.
It can only be a cover once, just different versions. There is no such thing as a cover of a cover. There is the original, and different covers. Cover of a cover makes it seems like the 3rd version is related to the first cover. It is not. They are all just covers of the original.
I fucking nigh on worship the National, and I've always felt that (stylistically) they we're heading down a certain route. It can't be summed up or defined in simple genre terms. Its just "The National sound" whatever that may be. But I heard this fucking epic cover and it just dropped my whole prerequisite on it's fucking head. The National ARE and CONTINUE to be outstanding. It's as if they're sailors floating on a sea of sound, and long may they reign.
Good job on a VERY spooky song... The lyric of this song is downright chilling (its about the conversation between a couple of nuclear holocaust survivors). Nice version.
+Silas Curtis ....Hi Silas... Certainly know Mark Lanegan - have five of his solo albums and a few with his old group.... Just as dark is former Magazine member Barry Adamson - have you tried him - especially his King Of Nothing Hill album.
Matt's voice sounds like a cross between Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen on this, much darker sounding than the normal bitter sweet feel. Still sounds awesome
I don't think it gets any better than this.............the music, the voice, the interpretation...........
Bonnie Dobson, The Grateful Dead, Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart, Robert Plant, The Allman brothers, and now The National--They all have done justice to this song. It just shows what an amazing song it is.
Also Blackfoot and Nazerath
Very beautiful and powerful. We must avoid the unthinkable
Pure magic. The cover version has always succeeded when it sounds like it would be performer's own song. The War On Drugs and The National made the best versions to this collection.
And Bonnie Prince Billy's version of Ruben and Cherise, imho
The National meets psychedelia... and the world was great again
I'm in love with Matt's voice.
This is some solid cover work, I think the boys would be proud.
This was written when lyrics meant something, and I am old enough to remember that lost era. Social commentary, protest, it's all gone.
This is the best cover I've heard on the album so far. Their interpretation of this is effing brilliant.
I can't stop listening to this!
Thank you THE NATIONAL for this great version of this amazing song!
I really wish they ever once did it this well live.
This sounds so excellent. I'd love it on a loop-especially for late night low volume "falling asleep" music. Hypnotic.
5 years late, but I've done this multiple times in those 5 years and keep coming back to it if I'm ever struggling to sleep. It was probably your comment that gave me the idea in the first place, so, thanks!
This feels like making slow love to the voice of Matt Berninger. I long for a new The National record.
An acid trip in slow motion... I like that. The Dead meets Leonard Cohen.
Just discovered The National!! beautiful voice reminding me Leonard Cohen💗
Awesome rendition of an amazing song.
new National, today is a good day
+Aiur National covering GD...I would say its the best day.
Absurdly good. I use this song to test speakers or sound systems.
Yesss they're back!!!
They do a pretty good job much better than I expected!
Goosebumps goosebumps
+Ayoub Igmir i've read dat
The National is, easily, the best indie rock band of the century.
wilco
+Emiliano Polverari lolol
I think you might be right Lucas.
+kristopher dalgleish haine why?
I'm agreeing with your comment.
A very good cover version of a great song. Excellent all around...
Brilliance. Absolute and utter brilliance.
By far the best cover on that tribute album.
I love the video graphics on all four of these tracks. Too much darkness is still blocking the light.
Well done guys.
Sixties immortalized! Atmosphere of the era recreated... It's like time machine
Great description!
Nailed it!

So pumped about this album. Love their version of this. Starts like it's coming from a monster Wharf Rat or Terrapin. Nice work National. Can't wait to hear the rest
Love this rendition ...gives my chills!!!
Me, too.
the best sound ever. to be at home!
another amazing song from this band!!!! love you guy's!!
2:00 when the drum beat picks up just slightly ::chills::
+Eric Saltes So good.
great cover!
Where have these guys been hiding ?? I just got weak. Lovin the hell outta this sound.
Good take on the song. This will end up on a Movie soundtrack, mark my words.....
or the opening credits for a TV show. true detective season 3?
"you are not of my blood" -- seriously, the most "hey, this should be a true detective theme song" song if I've ever heard one.
But yeah, this is a killer track :)
This is cool stuff. The National reaches another level.
Wow, what a take on such a great song
So good.
'Morning Dew, by The National, from the forthcoming 'Day of the Dead' tribute to Grateful Dead. Released 20th May on 4AD, with all profits going to Red Hot Organization.
I don't know what 4AD means
+bionicbigfoot Famous indie record label since the '80s, home of the Pixies, among other legendary acts.
+Mad Mack St. Vincent released several albums on 4AD, so no.
+Mad Mack 4 AD, like, as in...the year 4, after Christ-?? I seriously have ZERO fuckung idea what you're on about, but know this: if you're laughing at me, well, better just remember where you left your groceries.
St. Vincent is brilliant, dude. You must hate everything. And AD stands for "Anno Domini" for everyone over age 10.
So beautiful!
Beautiful. I love it.
It's beautifully sung, hypnotic. The great cover of cover of cover of cover.
+Chairat Yingkitsthaworn Thank god someone recognized that this is a multiple cover. Jeff Beck/RodStewart did it, Nazareth did it, DEVO did it.
It can only be a cover once, just different versions. There is no such thing as a cover of a cover. There is the original, and different covers.
Cover of a cover makes it seems like the 3rd version is related to the first cover. It is not. They are all just covers of the original.
I prefer the dirt music (hugo race, chris eckman, chris broksw + others) cover of this song
Outstanding!
I literally CAN NOT WAIT - :-)
Total magic, with a little Johnny Cash flair.
love this
chuffing brilliant
the national does it again!!
Powerful version of a powerful song.
This is great!!
Great! Loved it
Fantastic. Really love the alchemy of a great cover. The nationals version is menacing while the dead's version is more sad, melancholy.
great version.....
yessss please! loving this!
love this, love this band
Sooo right on !
Just the best remake
This and ripple by Jane's Addiction are FAR better then the originals. The National blows my mind with how talented they are
Oh Hell Yes.
masterpiece
dude wtf? lets go!! tour to montana!
Why does this song give me a "This is the End" vibe from The Doors...
Excellent observation
Same here!
Sounds like that because it's about the aftermath from a nuclear war. He's describing what he sees when he awakens and walks outside.
Apocalyptic
Apples and oranges. Open your ears and mind!
Sublime...
This is it what you feel next morning when you get your heart broken
delicieuse a entendre
douce sensuelle relaxante.GOOD
.
That voice!
That was beautiful man. I put it up there with Devo's cover of the song too ;-)
Good job on a VERY spooky song...
The lyric of this song is downright chilling (its about the conversation between a couple of nuclear holocaust survivors).
Nice version.
God has this on his iPod .....
powerful!
His voice is like a dark chocolate *.*
Darker than dark chocolate
+Jelena Dereta ...Everyones A Winner - more Hot Chocolate..!!!
+EnosEverything try mark lanegan if you want noir...if you don't know him already
+Silas Curtis ....Hi Silas... Certainly know Mark Lanegan - have five of his solo albums and a few with his old group.... Just as dark is former Magazine member Barry Adamson - have you tried him - especially his King Of Nothing Hill album.
Hahaha lol
grateful
nice!
Love u guyz :*
In my opinion it sounds like mix of The National, Grateful Dead, Simple Minds and R.E.M. Happy Easter!
This sounds like it would've gone well in the Red Dead Redemption soundtrack
But I digress, what a nice, kinda trippy, song to just zone out with.
Ironic that the best National song in 10 years isn't really a National song.
This is really good though.
Not, of course, a Grateful Dead song. But this is a good version. A cover of a cover if you like
Z
Grateful Dead covered it from a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Bonnie Dobson.
It's not a Grateful Dead song. They borrowed it from Debbie Dobson, like a few others including Nazareth, Lulu and Tim Ross.
the national come back!!!
Is it just me, or would this make the perfect theme song to the new Twin Peaks series coming out?
Interesting that this is a GD tribute when the song was actually written by Bonnie Dobson, inspired by the post apocalyptic book and film On the Beach
The best versión i've heard. The National rules☝👏👏💪💪💪👍👍
I love the national and alt j
The only song with many great versions.
haaaaa love you
so good, sounds like the end by the doors
Matt's voice sounds like a cross between Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen on this, much darker sounding than the normal bitter sweet feel. Still sounds awesome
+Kiran Green
I hear Jim Kerr's soulful voice here as well. :D
Reminds me of Leonard Cohen's singing in "Natural Born Killers". It has some basic, constantly repetitious chords but the arrangement is outta sight.
Written in’61 by Bonnie Dobson
Try the long john baldry version
Cool
yes
j'écouterai cette music dans mon vieux pickup avec mon chapeau de cowboys
really gets at the sense of dread and apocalyptic menace .
Pretty fuckin badass
Some sweet forbidden drug from another time and place.....
Stunning.
