This match is such a gem. It can't be understated how fascinating it is to watch sisters, who know each others games more than anyone else, play at this level for a championship. The staging is so beautiful too.
Playing against a sibling is not easy either. The important thing is neither sister acted like one was better than the other. Same can be said for Jim and John Harbaugh in Super Bowl 47. Two great coaches with two great teams against one another. They didn’t let the competition get between them. Right after the game ended, Jim and John hugged each other and congratulated each other too

These LEGENDS DOMINATED Wimbledon over the last 20 years. 12 titles between them. It’s INCREDIBLE.
Venus made 16 Grand Slam Finals and only won 7 of them. Of the 9 she lost, 7 were against Serena. If Venus had faced any other player, she would have won 10-12 Grand Slams for sure.

It's kinda crazy that for an entire decade from 2000 - 2010 only 2 women whose last name wasn't Williams won a Wimbledon title. Sharapova in 04 and Mauresmo in 06. And only one year that didn't feature a Williams in the final. Pretty amazing

Finally!! I've searched RUclips for years looking for highlights of this match lol. This is the best GS Final the sisters ever played against each other. Venus with the back to back to back finals 07-09, if only THIS Venus would return to the WTA.

If I remember right I think the average of Venus's first serve in this match - the AVERAGE - was 119 mph. She was consistently hitting 122, 124, 125 and wasn't straining. Those were right in the wheelhouse for her. I just marvel at how Serena and Venus absolutely crush the ball, and neither of them is rattled. They've done this with each other all their lives so the power doesn't phase them.
Venus' average on her first and second serves were both higher than the male champion, Nadal. That's how insane she served that tournament.
I believe it. And both Venus and Serena's groundstroke speed in this match was higher than Andy Murray's.
Venus struck a 129 in this game which the announcer said was the fastest ever hit at Wimbledon by a female player!

I have been watching the William Sisters for years, it is still to this day, very hard for me to watch them play one another in a life match as I love them both so very much. Alas, I know in tennis, one must win and one must lose, so I always wait to just read the headlines or watch the highlights of their match :-I
This is one my favourite matches they both played
this is just one of the many finals were the sisters met...... during the French Open 2002 to Australian Open 2003....four straight grandslams where the sisters met in the finals...... to be a grandslam champion is already rare.... but being siblings ranked 1 and 2, and both became # 1s...met finals, winning doubles together, ONLY sisters to have won 4 Olympic golds.... like what?.... one in a trillion scenario..... or... will never be replicated at all

There were a few times in this match that Serena could have come to net, and didn’t, and Venus snuck away with the point. Venus had no problems coming up to net when she needed to. I think that was the difference. And Venus played really incredible defense and played a perfect mental match.

The commentary from Austin and the British guy was exceptional. Have watched most of it before but the commentary made me appreciate Venus' long gone intelligence in shotmaking - the selection of spin serves, body serves, net presence, and the subtle footwork. Her serve was shaky here, but compromised those by wise choices. The commentators also correctly pointed out Venus' forehand being weaker than the solid backhand, as seen here where the forehand was explosive but sketchy at times. If only Venus has 1/3 of the "thinking" as shown here today. Also she really needs to go back to this backhand.
Venus was very intelligent here, that is true. But she also wasn’t in her late 30s and her body was a lot healthier here. That auto immune disorder does more than just takes her energy. She explained that. Though she has made some unwise and illogical decisions shotmaking wise for a minute, it’s probably because of her body too how she reacts.
@@TarHeelBlueFreak yes, but there were a lot of subtle things she would do back in the days. She wrote notes and brought them to matches, was willing to put out gritty matches even in subpart forms by changing tactics. I know she did this even in 2012 (and 2015, I presume) but somehow she has lost the will to adjust. Of course that disease and the disastrous wrist injury factored, no doubt, but it was painful to watch her now.

@@Mysicalgreenunicorn03 yes. Since then she has had so much trouble against slices - there is no wrist motion since she couldn't use it anymore because of a surgery. Before 03' she would simply rip off slices (except for Graf's) hence why she had little problem against Henin.

This was a scramble for Venus. She was constantly on the back foot of every game. I am impressed by how she kept her nose down and managed to secure the win in the end. That truly does show her championship character.
There were only a handful women's finals at Wimbledon in the past 30 years in a same or higher league - Graf and Sanchez 1995, Venus and Davenport 2000, Venus and Davenport 2005. Maybe Serena and Venus 2002 too.

I like how venus returns the serve of serena staying inside the baseline and that backhand of hers is just lethal and solid
1:45:01. The point of the match and indicative of what this match was. An in form Serena was trying to break Venus down, but not only did Venus hold firm…she went on the offense and pushed the error from Serena. Time after time in the match this was the case.
2008 was a year with Venus and Rafa winning Wimbledon!
