I was faced with the decision to pursue a smallmouth bass I saw in the Musselshell River that would have broken our Montana state record by an easy 2 pounds. In order to claim that distinction I had to kill the bass to get the 'official' weight from certified scales. Well, I just could not bring myself to kill that critter so I had to let a guy who caught a smaller smallie claim that record. The one I know about is still in the river or dead of old age now.
In my view, you did the right thing. That fish had superior genetics to reach that size, and you allowed it further opportunities to pass that along to future generations. Others will catch those progeny and derive great pleasure in doing so. Having the record could never compare with what you did. And, I think you realize that. From a dedicated angler, Thank You.

Wow! That was so informative, evocative, and fun. I mainly fish a 15-acre public pond in North Bergen NJ. Watching this talk has made me want to find out more about the health of my pond and how it's being or not being managed. There's a decent Bass population along with some Blue gills, and some abundant and large carp and Catfish. And there's the occasional Crappie. I've caught 15lb Carp, some Bass in the 3 to 4 lb range, and some 10 lb Catfish. On the rare occasion I catch a Crappie they are huge 11 to 12 inches. I'm going to try to reach out to the Pond Boss for advice about how to check out the health of my pond. It's so sad when I see kids come to fish and they give up when they don't catch anything. I help them catch Bluegills when I can, but I'm thinking all the fishermen could do better if we made sure the pond was being tended to like the garden he mentioned in his talk. Thank you for posting this.
This guy is awesome. And it sinks home the point... I'm sure a lot of you experience this, but it just hits different when you catch bigger bass. When you catch a 4 or 5 pounder you already know it beat way more odds than most of the other bass. Especially in highly pressured waters or waters with lesser food resources. A double digit bass is a lifetime catch for most anglers, and it should be. I've seen a few in the wild, and he's not kidding about heart rate. Such a cool moment witnessing something so unlikely.
When we first released it, RUclips was limiting videos to 10 mins. We thought it was time to release the full version, now that they no longer restrict videos.
At a public lake I fish the average goes around 2 to 5 pounds however I have seen 8 and 9 pounder's as well. What I haven't seen in years is a population of bluegill over 4 inches. We do have a fare share of catch and keep angler's there as well, maybe thats why. 10 years ago we had crappie. I haven't caught one since then, somebody introduced tilapia to the lake and I have seen some strange bluegill maybe a hybrid but none of them large at all. Back in 2004 these students showed up in a weird boat we never seen before turns out it was a shock boat and they were going in to check the fish population we got lucky and they took us with them to observe. We collected fish all around the central islands of the lake where no one could fish because they haven't allowed boat rentals since the mid 70's what stumped us was the very small amount of bass we found and their small size. Lake management in public lakes like you said must be tough with all the cut's in funding but as long as I can catch a few each time I go I'm happy, I've been going there since I was a kid so I do know many honey holes LOL.
I caught a largemouth in western Pa and when i put it on my scale unknowingly it was set to Kgs. The scale read 7.4 kg. It wasn't til I put the fish back in the water that I realized it wasn't a 7lb it was a 7kg meaning it was a 16 lb fish. If u arent going to eat it put it back. I practice the same idea when I'm hunting, if I'm not gonna eat it im not gonna take its life for nothing. Unless its a groundhogs.

My local lake was famous around here for producing 8-12lb bass. I can’t tell you how many pictures I’ve seen of people holding 10-12lb bass in their back yard at home… absolutely drives me nuts. Weigh it, measure it, take some pictures and put her back in the water!!! I’ve heard stories of people putting out yo-yos under cypress trees and catching huge bass to take home and eat.. almost makes me sick to think about it.
so when he says they drove around with the fish for 45 min and found the fish the next day back where they caught it, how does it remember to go back there if its memory is only 15 min?
ericstrongman because he's telling a 30 to 45 minute video of lies guys like him come up with 💩 like that to say so the people who keep fish will stop its kinda like the History book where white people have altered and lied about for years
im from florida... ive seen 2 bass that where over 10 pounds... one maybe close to 20 pounds... talking huuuuuuge bass never caught them but i saw them.... over 2 feet in length .. ive caught 8 pounders and the4se where twice the size... one of them was in a lake in towngate the other in a canal in grand palms infront of towngate.. anyone seen the one from grandpalms? that one was so big it scared me when he popped out the culvert
I fish logan martin lake in alabama and it is a Coosa river spotted bass hotbed. I have recently been keeping all or most of the pound and a half and smaller fish I catch. Believe it or not I have began to catch more 3 to 5 pound spots from that area than I ever have.
Matt Jones this past winter will help too. More of a true winter pushed down for all the great seasonal triggers. So far the spawn has seemed strong across all species here to your north on Pickwick.
Matt Jones if your keeping the small fish you better make sure they are all legally long enough to keep or else youll get a 100 dollar ticket for ever under sized fish in your live well. I also fish logan Martin and got a ticket for just one small bass
Fantastic video that should be shared by all. Lake owners and fishermen alike should be following this advice, especially on public lakes. Great job! I can't imagine why anyone would not "Like" this video!

I don’t think that’s particularly difficult dilemma. Even if a creature isn’t “intelligent”, it can learn in its bones what is and isn’t food....what is and isn’t safe to be around. And bass are individuals like us. One might fall for the spinnerbait okie doke five times while another gets caught twice then “realizes” it’s not food the next time he sees one.
Very informative but think a good portion of anglers aren't interested in catch and release. I catch and release 100% and never realized I should actually be keeping some to help manage the waters I fish.
I have a nine Acre Lake and it has a pretty big stream that feeds it and one year I caught a bass or we caught a bunch of them with a black tongue and black lips and had more pronounced teeth a they were only in the lake for that one year nobody ever caught one after that year I live in South Jersey and when I went upstream I did see were somebody had a pond that they made with riprap all around the edges and we had a bad storm and it washed everything down into my lake and that's when they showed up has anybody ever seen or heard of anything like that
So if I basses memory is 15 minutes, how did that bass that he caught with the crappie in it's mouth know to swim that 400 yards back across the lake to get back to its territory so that he caught it again the next day in the same place? Great video guys. Is there a part II?
Some of it just comes down to instinctual things more than memory. Scent might be a factor, even just the fact that the bass had went to that spot for a reason before, why not again be it for the great cover, food, or other fish.
Bill dance doesn't think many 10+ bass are pulled out of florida? I know one fisherman who's caught 15 10-12.5 pound bass out of a local central florida lake! A 10 pounder is big but no more rare than a 5-6 pound fish up north.
Zachary Bogert just go throw whatever in there. They're ready for it. No people for 3 or 4 years is basically too good to be true. Somebody slips on it.
Kyle Jacobs I'm sure a couple people have slipped across it, but due to logging the access has been virtually cut off. Can't wait to try it out in a couple days.
Something that small your choices are fairly wide open. Granted it's bigger than many ponds, it still falls into that easy water category compared to large bodies or water such as impoundments, reservoirs, and river systems. Why most people think record fish caught from them should have an asterisk mark next to their listing lol.
if you are not going to mount a bass that is over 18" let it go! If you fish long enough this will not be a big trophy and you can not eat them the meat is soft, especially in the heat of summer, and the fun of catching is shared with your co anglers!
Catch and Release I hate seeing guys and kids who catch 7-10 pounders on Fishbrain and when you look at the catch and release tab it reads NO Does a 10 pound bass even taste good? I'll never know!!!
I see tons of bass here in the western basin. Absolutely tons. None that are truly big until you start hitting coves and break walls out and around the islands. The smallmouth fishing is as great as ever here. See great sizes and numbers. I dont know what you mean buddy? Its a huge lake. I am curious.
Great speech, his religious views dictate his theories on hybridization far too much tho. Anyone who's fished a few years can tell you Sunfish hybridize ALL the damn time, and Smallmouth/Largemouth do it occasionally in the wild.

I’ve heard stories of people putting out yo-yos under cypress trees and catching huge bass to take home and eat.. almost makes me sick to think about it.
I enjoyed the video.
I recommend watching the whole video.
Thanks for watching pink mist!
Fantastic lecture! Very informative
What a fantastic video. Great information.
Glad you liked it Copperhead Outdoors!
so when he says they drove around with the fish for 45 min and found the fish the next day back where they caught it, how does it remember to go back there if its memory is only 15 min?
ericstrongman because he's telling a 30 to 45 minute video of lies guys like him come up with 💩 like that to say so the people who keep fish will stop its kinda like the History book where white people have altered and lied about for years
man this was great. thanks.
Amazing bass knowledge.
This is a great video full of information
Glad it was helpful!
That was fantastic! Thank you!
im from florida... ive seen 2 bass that where over 10 pounds... one maybe close to 20 pounds... talking huuuuuuge bass never caught them but i saw them.... over 2 feet in length .. ive caught 8 pounders and the4se where twice the size... one of them was in a lake in towngate the other in a canal in grand palms infront of towngate..
anyone seen the one from grandpalms? that one was so big it scared me when he popped out the culvert
Which lake in NC?
Great talk
Glad you liked it Greg Vincent!
amazing
Do you think you're affecting that by just what you've culled?
Thanks for the information.
Great info, thanks.
Awesome Info!
Glad you liked it Chasing Fish!
Thanks for such an informative video
You're welcome Derek Stewart! Thanks for watching.
If the lake does not have a slot state limit is 14 inches, where should I cull? Keep 14 to 16-inch release anything above 16
I just always release .
Fantastic video that should be shared by all. Lake owners and fishermen alike should be following this advice, especially on public lakes.
Great job! I can't imagine why anyone would not "Like" this video!
Learning how to unhook a gut hooked fish will come in handy once in a while, if you release your catches
You're right. Here ya go! www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/12981-how-do-i-remove-a-hook-a-bass-has-swallowed/?do=findComment&comment=153524
Would like to hear his explanation how bass get conditioned to some lures so quickly, and refuse them to bite.
Memory
i live in Texas pretty close to this guy and i feel like i have seen him around lake ray roberts a few times :o
Great info
Very informative but think a good portion of anglers aren't interested in catch and release. I catch and release 100% and never realized I should actually be keeping some to help manage the waters I fish.
You got that right! Thanks for watching, Bryan Rudy!
1:25,000,000 to be a double digit and right now OH Ivie producing them weekly.
That’s only because that lake is part of a share linker program. Where they only stock big Bass genetic fish in there.
This is awesome thanks for uploading! Any more of bob would be awesome
Thanks for the support, 331slash, and thanks for watching!
Great video,
I have a nine Acre Lake and it has a pretty big stream that feeds it and one year I caught a bass or we caught a bunch of them with a black tongue and black lips and had more pronounced teeth a they were only in the lake for that one year nobody ever caught one after that year I live in South Jersey and when I went upstream I did see were somebody had a pond that they made with riprap all around the edges and we had a bad storm and it washed everything down into my lake and that's when they showed up has anybody ever seen or heard of anything like that
Great information, Loved the talk of more then one spawning which is something I always believed !
Thanks for watching TheWeasel606!
Thank you Brother!!!
You're welcome Kevin David Brummett! Thanks for watching.
So if I basses memory is 15 minutes, how did that bass that he caught with the crappie in it's mouth know to swim that 400 yards back across the lake to get back to its territory so that he caught it again the next day in the same place? Great video guys. Is there a part II?
Fish had 8 minutes to get back before he forgot where he lived fish was out of the water for 7 minutes. Lol
Quinton Quiroz wow good explanation man
Some of it just comes down to instinctual things more than memory.
Anybody have any tips on fishing a 3-4 acre lake that hasn't been touched in years.
Zachary Bogert just go throw whatever in there. They're ready for it.
No people for 3 or 4 years is basically too good to be true. Somebody slips on it.
Kyle Jacobs
I'm sure a couple people have slipped across it, but due to logging the access has been virtually cut off.
Great watch ! Love it!
Thanks for watching Eric Miniard!
BassResource - Bass Fishing Information thanks for posting!
Bob I'm in California seen em all.. have you gone out at night?
if you are not going to mount a bass that is over 18" let it go! If you fish long enough this will not be a big trophy and you can not eat them the meat is soft, especially in the heat of summer, and the fun of catching is shared with your co anglers!
Thank You
All I can say is thank you 🙏. The bass god
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
one word...wow.
Caught 4 nice bass last night. Had no knife or ice. They stayed in a bucket with water for 6 hours.died ofcorce, safe to eat???
Wow, more angles need to watch this video. People get the word out..
Thanks for the support, Jeff Cavitt, and thanks for watching!
Catch and Release
I hate seeing guys and kids who catch 7-10 pounders on Fishbrain and when you look at the catch and release tab it reads NO
Does a 10 pound bass even taste good? I'll never know!!!
Be nice if someone stocked Lake Erie with Bass it's really not the same like the 80's
I see tons of bass here in the western basin. Absolutely tons. None that are truly big until you start hitting coves and break walls out and around the islands. The smallmouth fishing is as great as ever here. See great sizes and numbers. I dont know what you mean buddy? Its a huge lake. I am curious.
I wasn't around back then but I fish erie often on the Ontario side, great bass and pike fishing
people. Is right I agree with.
I`ve heard this guy before & wish everyone could hear him just once & not just bass
I catch bass for fun, and catch perch and crawfish for food.
Bass can’t rember 15 minuets after but can move 400 yards to the same spot hmmm
Sell&Resslers GreatOutdoors they’re way smarter than that lol
Great speech, his religious views dictate his theories on hybridization far too much tho. Anyone who's fished a few years can tell you Sunfish hybridize ALL the damn time, and Smallmouth/Largemouth do it occasionally in the wild.
Some fishery biologists believe that they can remember for 6 months and can identify different members in their school of fish by smell
The same could be said about some humans too! LOL
I think some people are missing the point of this lecture. Cull the dink’s and catch and release the ones that have a chance
Lmao people study show we only got a 20 min. time limit so bass smarter than u giving them credit lmao
study showed we only use 10percent of our brain so that's tells u brain don't need to be big just makes our heads bigger lol
Say what you want but bass are smarter than what you’re making them to be.
10 lb bass = 1 in 30 Million
Like or not he is right. Please follow the Regeres were you fish poeple.
