Hi there - great vids, thank you! I wonder - where is part 2 please? Thanks
Just wondering how to access part 2 - it's been made private! I followed the link in Co-Creating Change, but no luck!
Thanks
Nice series, but what happened to Video #2 in the 5 part series?
Wondering the same thing
Great question! See Blackman's book 101 Defenses for a great list. In intensive short term dynamic psychotherapy we have an additional category of interpersonal defenses (tactical defenses) which are tactics to distance from other people.
I'm glad you find the information useful. In my book, Co-Creating Change: Effective Dynamic Therapy techniques, you'll find lots of visual aids. Briefly, the triangle of conflict (feelings, anxiety, and defense) can occur in past relationships, current relationships, or in the therapy relationship. So we call that the triangle of person (past, current, and therapy relationships). Often we will explore a conflict in a current or the therapy relationship, then feelings from the past rise.
A method marked by a sense of omnipotence "Nothing can break us. It is our illusions that break, not us." This "we are the best" doesn't convince me. Apparently, however, it is difficult to accept diversity and the fact that there is no one miracle method. The method is supposed to fit the human, in ISTDP the human is expected to fit the method, this is a very directive approach. ISTDP is not a good choice for trauma and some personality disorders where a sense of security is needed. To put it bluntly, Pan has an idea for healing trauma by skinning the patient - now there are no wounds inflicted by others, he is the author of his own work, so he can stop blaming others. But people do hurt people sometimes, and that's also a reality. Not the way.
Maybe your sadness is something important to listen to. Sometimes we get anxious when we share our sadness with others because we have been hurt before when we were intimate emotionally with others. If you keep putting the anxiety to the side, over time you will become more aware of the feelings that trigger your anxiety.
Thank you! Very helpful.
great video. very helpful.
Thanks. I'm so glad you found it useful. Jon
Hi Jon, great vids. Jon I can't seem to locate 'Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy Part 2' Any ideas?
Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy Part 2
Here it is. If you liked this, check out my book, Co-Creating Change: Effective Dynamic Therapy Techniques. Thanks for your interest.
The video is set to private
Jon this really has given me a better understanding of this approach. Do you have books for sale. I'm very interested in your work. Also do you have workshops
You can get two books of mine, Co-Creating Change: effective dynamic therapy techniques. It won the first prize in psychiatry from the British Medical Association. My new book is "The Lies We Tell Ourselves: how to face the truth, accept yourself, and create a better life. Both of these books will give you a detailed way of understanding and experiencing this approach. I have core trainings that I offer in Washington, D.C.
Hi Jon. Iam an avid follower of your work, have read your book 'Co creating change' and now also reading 'Learning to Listen from Multiple perspectives'. I was hoping if you could provide me some more suggestions as to what I should read or see to clearly be able to differentiate between wish fear and defense for when Iam listening to the client, then atleast 2 elements seem interchangeable as if, -is it a defense, or a fear and so on. And also how to direct the sessions through effective probing and rephrasing, if you have any papers on the same, kindly suggest!
The thing is I havent undergone psychoanalytic training as of now and have started working only an year back, but I have been undergoing psychoanalytic therapy myself for the last 3 years, so that is my main source of learning and then your books! Kindly offer any suggestions that you have, it will be invaluable
+Aastha Jain Feelings are what mobilize the patient. Anxiety is a feeling in the body. Defenses are the things we do to avoid the feelings that make us anxious. My book on learning to listen will help some. What will help a LOT are my skill building exercises at www.istdpinstitute.com. You will notice an audio download of skill building exercises for about 20 different defenses. Once you've done those, your intellectual and experiential knowledge will take a quantum leap. And once you've done those, you can go on to the next set of skill building exercises. Thanks for your interest!
