My mother was a Frank Fan from her Bobby Sox days. In her later years she inherited a decent sum of money, which she vowed to spend on having fun. One of her splurges were front row tickets to see Frank at The London Palladium, a literal dream come true, when he blew a kiss her way. I must have listened to this track a 100 times growing up. Nobody had timing like Frank. ✌️
That's a terrific story! Thanks for sharing.
Frank Sinatra and Cole Porter. A smashing combination.
Plus Nelson Riddle doing the orchestrations!!!
@@ianlove1215 Exactly!
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Summer Wind" and "It Was a Very Good Year"!!!!
Those are two of my all time favourites! ❤️
Or anything from the Live at the Sands album.
I think they'd both love "It Was A Very Good Year", Amber for sure.
The video of Sinatra in the studio recording It Was a Very Good Year, he's at his best.
Summer Wind is the ultimate easy breezy top down, sails up, beverage in your hand song.
Yes, yes, yes!
Love Summer Wind
I love that song!
You should watch a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie!! The dancing is phenomenal!
I got three Sinatra songs that have stood out for me:
"One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)" (I pick this as Frank's greatest song.)
"Angel Eyes" (Frank used to use this as his show closer for a lot of years.)
"I've Got You Under My Skin"
Definitely agree about One for my Baby. My favorite Sinatra song.
I’d add or switch out one for Funny Valentine!
Sinatra always liked to stand with the band. His voice is one of the instruments in a way.
And it’s not just his stellar voice, it’s the phrasing - the way he plays with the syllables - stretching them out of shortening them or adding an extra one. Often imitated but never truly duplicated. He’s the original.
Frank was a big fan of Billie Holiday, and learned jazz phrasing from listening to her.
Love the crooners. But also like instrumentals- you should try some “Big Band” style music from the 1930s & 40s!!! Like Benny Goodman “Sing Sing Sing”… but no singing. Just great music you want to dance to.
alsoon YT Lionel Hampton "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" on The Ed Sullivan Show.
He sings, plays piano, xylophone, vibraphone, drums and a little tap dance, all in 3 mins!
Definitely agree with that. Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. Also some other jazz standards. They may also like Dick Haymes and Jo Stafford.
Yes, absolutely!
Music is the answer..
Sinatra classics I listen to I’ve got you under my skin,
Fly me to the moon
Bewitched,to name some
During WWII my uncle was stationed at Gander AFB in Labrador, and was responsible for taking care of the USO acts that were on their way to Europe. He met Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., among many others.
Oh wow how cool is that? What exciting memories.
I'm a rocker and love heavy metal music, but Frank Sinatra has the greatest singing voice in my humble opinion. Creed and Alter Bridge guitarist, Mark Tremonti, recently did an album of Frank Sinatra songs. He has a great singing voice and sounds uncannily like Frank.
This is what you get when you have a great voice, a great band, a great conductor and great song writers.
Another act you should check out are the Mills Brothers, a black jazz quartet that got their start around the late 20's. Some of their songs to react to would be Paper Doll, You Always Hurt The One You Love, Glow Worm, Till Then, Bye-Bye Blackbird. They worked with Lous Armstrong. They also appeared in films and had a radio show in the 30's.
With their love for The Bee Gees, they should know that as kids they grew up hearing their dad play The Mills Brothers on the record player and learned harmonizing by listening to them.
Tiger Rag ["Hold that Tiger"] too, their version is hilarious, skat singing and all.
Yes! One of my favorites of their older repertoire is "I Heard".
You Always Hurt the One You Love! Great tune! I worked as a postal carrier in the 80's,and one of the old timer's would play that song! I came to really enjoy it! Love some Tony Bennet,Because of You! Rosemary Clooney also great!
"Night and Day" is a popular song by Cole Porter that was written for the 1932 musical Gay Divorce. It is perhaps Porter's most popular contribution to the Great American Songbook and has been recorded by dozens of musicians. NPR says "within three months of the show's opening, more than 30 artists had recorded the song."
Fred Astaire introduced "Night and Day" on November 29, 1932, when Gay Divorce opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
-Wikipedia
Actually title is Gay Divorcee….
Now they need to react to the original, from the movie, by Fred Astaire. A whole different approach to this great song, and my personal favorite of all the many covers.
And watch Fred and Ginger dance I love it!
@@ediefolta9494 Yes, Fred's singing of "Night and Day" was personal, intimate, and romantic. Fred was so romantic !!
@@jamessumita9523 Thanks, I missed that!
When my mother was a teen, she used to go see Sinatra when he was in town, and all the teen girls would scream just like they would later do with the Beatles!
...and, TOTALLY AGREE, JAY - HOW could ANYONE not just LOVE THIS?!?!?! So GLAD you've found Frank and enjoy him, so!!
One of my favorite Frank Sinatra songs is "All or Nothing at All". "I've Got the World on a String" , " Witchcraft", and "Come Fly With Me" are also great Frank Sinatra songs.
Nothing better than Frank singing a Nelson Riddle arrangement of a Cole Porter song!!! Mr Porter was one of the best songwriters ever, penning both music and lyrics. Possibly the most famous of Sinatra/Riddle/Porter collaboration is I've Got You Under My Skin. One of Frank's BEST!!
You should also listen to the first Sinatra/Riddle teaming, I've Got The World On A String. You'll LOVE the swinging song!!!
Love this song by Cole Porter . Try Ella Fitzgerald's cover of "Night And Day"
"It Was a Very Good Year" (the live clip that shows him recording it in the studio, if possible)!
This song was written by Cole Porter who was a composer and song writer who composed around 300 songs between the 20s and late 50s. There is a tribute album to some of Cole Porter's most famous songs, and U2 actually does a cover of this song that is pretty cool. It's on an album called Red Hot + Blue. So many other cool covers on that album from Annie Lennox, David Byrne from Talking Heads, Sinead O'Connor, K.D. Lang, the Neville Brothers, Lisa Stansfield, and others.
LOVE THAT ALBUM!
Red Hot + Blue is *FANTASTIC*.
Another excellent Porter collection is the old Verve record Ella Fitzgerald did. 'Ella Sings Cole Porter", she also did a Gershwin one. There available in other forms but I still have my old records.
I am guessing this masterful arrangement was done by Nelson Riddle. He also arranged for Linda Ronstadt's albums of standards. You two are delightful.
Those arrangements are legendary!
Even if you weren't familiar with the tune, you can almost anticipate the way Frank Sinatra is going to end a song. He goes out with a bang!
Jay you want horns? Check out Frank live at the Sands hotel in Vegas with the Count Basie Band, singing "I've Got You Under My Skin". It must be what Heaven sounds like.
This is a great FS song and I also love, It Was A Very Good Year, from 1965. It's a wonderful video of Frank recording in the studio. He's even talking between takes. You rarely find those anymore with many of the greats from way back when.
There's like 5 different versions of this song with Sinatra singing. This is my favorite ,but the one with only strings is spellbinding.
This is a cover of a Cole Porter song from 1932. Covered by many artists, including Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ringo Starr, U2, Chicago, The Temptations, Rod Stewart and more recently Willie Nelson and the Lady Gaga duet with Tony Bennet. The band Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 did a great bosa nova version of this song.
I always love me some Frank Sinatra anytime at all...especially during Christmas when he sings with Dean and Sammy for a Rat Pack Christmas... Great reaction, guys...Keep Being Awesome. !!!...
I love when he sings "The Christmas Waltz".
Please, please, Bobby Darren; “Somewhere, Beyond The Sea”. You will love it!
My best friends grandfather was good friends with the Sinatra's in Hoboken NJ.... I lived in Hoboken until 6... I still love Hoboken... What a voice ole' Frankie had...puts a smile on your face....
(I'VE GOT YOU) UNDER MY SKIN,
THE SUMMERWIND,
WITHCRAFT,
and a black and white video of Frank recording IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR live, shows his audience and professional cool. These are some of Sinatra's best songs fromm his catalog. And just for Jay, I'd like to throw in the song IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS.
You guys are a welcome addition to my daily routine. Keep going and enjoy
A masterclass in phrasing. Nobody can duplicate Frank, no matter how hard they try.
THOSE HORNS JUST SHINE...and, with Frank's vocals: OMG - MELTS MY HEART!!! Hugs, Ya'll!! ENJOY!!
You have to watch Guys and Dolls the movie with frank you'll enjoy it.
Or "On the Town" with Gene Kelly
Frank Sinatra was amazing on screen, also see: The Man With The Golden Arm, Pal Joey, the Manchurian Candidate, and his Academy, Award-winning role in From Here To Eternity. All great great films.
Chairman of the board!
Love Frank!
I was fortunate enough to see Frank live. Absolute class act.
Old blue eyes 💘man with a velvet voice💞
The era of the big band, lots of horns & percussion with a few strings in there!!
One For My Baby (and one more for the road) is my favorite Frank Sinatra song. Please let that song be your next Frank reaction.
This is a classic song from what is known as the American Songbook.
It was on the first solo Beatle album with vocals, Ringo's album, "Sentimental Journey." He made the album for his mother. The great thing is you can sing better than him when you sing along.
For more American Songbook, you can't beat Linda Ronstadt's three albums: What's New, Lush Life, and For Sentimental Reasons. On what's new, the title track and guess I'll hang my tears out to dry. On Lush Life, When I Fall in Love and Skylark. On For Sentimental Reasons, i get along without you very well and straighten up and fly right.
Frank Sinatra recorded this song at least five times. I think that this is the 1957 version (I was 3-years-old) from the album "A swingin' Affair". Nelson Riddle arranged and conducted the charts. Fads and fashions come and go. Class and true style and endures.
The GOLD standard which all musicians strive to achieve. His aura was a thing of magic and his confidence supreme. The ultimate entertainer.
Someone once told me that what separated Sinatra from most singers is that he wasn't just up on stage performing for you, but that you felt that he was singing 'to' you.
Frank Sinatra "Summer Wind" A favorite
Hi Guys greetings from England 🇬🇧 thanks for playing Sinatra on your channel and you should check out Frank Sinatra singing his song "THATS LIFE" from his TV special Sinatra a man and his music as this was classic Sinatra as his absolute best!!! Also can we have some more TONY BENNETT on your channel especially his song "Fly Me To The Moon"
Sinatra starred opposite Doris Day in the musical film Young at Heart (1954)
Sinatra featured alongside Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in High Society (1956)
Grace Patricia Kelly (November 12, 1929 - September 14, 1982), also known as Grace of Monaco, was an American actress and Princess of Monaco as the wife of Prince Rainier III from their marriage on April 18, 1956, until her death.
Von Ryan's Express is a 1965 World War II adventure film starring Frank Sinatra, Trevor Howard, and Raffaella Carrà, and directed by Mark Robson.
Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga - "Night And Day".
Never again will the world see a musical talent like this man. We have his music forever to enjoy. Great job describing your feelings for his music. There are so many more songs to play and listen to.
A CLASSIC TUNE WRITTEN IN 1932 BY THE GREAT COLE PORTER-IT WAS THE #1 SONG OF 1933. SINATRA RECORDED IT WITH THE NELSON RIDDLE ORCHESTRA IN 1956. BACK THEN THEY HAD TO RECORD IT TOGETHER, SO THEY HAD TO DO MANY TAKES TO GET IT RIGHT. FRANK ALWAYS HAD THE BEST SESSION MUSICIANS AND HE WAS A PERFECTIONIST.
I grew up hearing my mom's Sinatra records. What I appreciate most about him now is how he could change a song with a change of phrasing and musical arrangements. This is the first time I've heard this arrangement of Night and Day, and I love it! Thanks for choosing this version.
Not an easy song to sing. I love Cole Porter and his great lyrics. Frank Sinatra sings it masterfully. This one and Begin the Beguine.
This is a classic, but done in that Frank style...yes! That voice was like a bell.
Since you mentioned Liza Minnelli and musicals and big band music, you guys should watch "New York,New York" on your movie reaction channel. Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Liza as a big band singer of the '40's and '50's who marries a jazz saxophonist played by Robert DeNiro. They match like water and oil but manage to make a go of it for a while. Features much great music from that era with Liza really shining as both a singer and actress. Well worth checking out.
I was raised with this music playing in our home, my Dad was a huge fan of Frank, but also, Sammy Davis, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and the big band sound like Artie Shaw. I inherited the enthusiasm for these and along with my own music of the 60s 70s, I have a full collection of the Chairman of the Board, from his early years with the Tommy Dorsey band right up to the 90s. I love to put on my headphones curl up with a book and listen to my music.
You have got to do 'Thats Life'. I think it's his best.
Night and Day is a song by Cole Porter written for the 1932 musical Gay Divorcee. Fred Astaire made the song famous and was even a bigger hit after the musical was made into a movie with he and Ginger Rogers. Many people have covered this song including Frank Sinatra.
The title was actually Gay Divorcee….
That Nelson Riddle arrangement !!! The best with the best, written by a great !
Thanks so much for this. You've made me smile.
Wow! You selected one of the most beautiful songs of all time. I adore Cole Porter’s Night and Day and love how Frank makes it swing. You once reacted to the Little River Band’s Reminiscing, which name checked this tune!
Amber, you said you’d like to check out more Liza Minnelli. You may want to start with her rendition (the original!) of New York, New York that Frank later sang. Or you could take in my favorite Minnelli story song: Ring Them Bells. Both songs, as well as Cabaret, were written by the legendary team of John Kander and Fred Ebb.
No one could match Frank's phrasing. People have a hard time replicating it.
Frank Sinatra...you guys should have a Frank Sinatra Week!! Songs? Well, just a ton to pick from, throw a dart!
This song is used in the movie What Women Want. If either of you haven’t seen it, it’d be a great movie to react to. You’ll both love it.
If you want to watch him in a musical i'd recommend --- (Pal Joey) Sinatra alongside Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak.
It must have been great to live back in that era to be at a concert and feel the power of a big band.
If "Night & Day" is the type of FS song that suits you (confident, swinging, HORN SECTION ON FIRE) then allow me to suggest "Ring a Ding Ding" and "Luck Be a Lady". They capture that "Rat Pack" spirit so to speak. Caution most versions of "Luck Be a Lady" start out slow but be patient - it gets going soon enough. "Ring a Ding Ding" is full throttle from the beginning. Regardless Rob Squad is great! Nice to see people appreciate good music that is all over the map, because good music = good music, full stop! 🙂
Nelson Riddle, who did most of the arrangements for Sinatra, left 'spaces' for Frank to phrase lyrics "his" way. Also, FYI, most of Sinatra's recordings were done live in the studio in one take.
Frank is amazing and by no means can you take away from his unique voice and phrasing.....but his arranger for this era Nelson Riddle was a pure genius with his horns, strings and amazing texture he added to these songs
Voted his best album w is SONGS FOR SWINGING LOVERS. Every song is a classic. Also, Nelson Riddle’s arrangements and orchestra. PENNIES FROM HEAVEN has an amazing horn arrangement. Glad you’re appreciating this genre. Peace
Frank was a master of vocal technique.
You just can't beat that big band sound & of course Frank too!
He had a great voice and phrasing and did some great songs including this one by Cole Porter. Another couple of great ones are 'One for my baby and one for the road' and 'Witchcraft'-Colin Ward
"Luck be a Lady" some great horns in that one too
My favorite FS song is “All the Way.”
This song was originally performed by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in The Gay Divorcee (1934). You should definitely check that out.
IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR - Haunting, or LOVE FOR SALE - Ella Fitzgerald I think you'll ♥️ ✌️ y'all !
One of my top 3 Sinatra songs. Written by the great Cole Porter. The amazing band was Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra. A true gem of a recording.
This makes me happy. I love Frank Sinatra!
So many great versions of this classic, Ella Fitzgerald and the Temptations are also worthy ❤️
There is a RUclips video of him doing this song from 1943 that I think you would enjoy.
Sinatra recorded five different versions of this song!
Yep even a disco version in the 70s 😮. My favorite is the sultry ballad recording from 1961.
@@179cpv I also prefer the ballad. Haunting.
My parents loved Sinatra but I didn't appreciate him until I was older. When my Mom had Alzheimer's, she didn't remember her husband or anything about her life but she sang every word of every Sinatra song until the day she died. Music is the answer. If you haven't listened to Come Rain or Come Shine you should.
Great reaction. This one is indeed special: it's Sinatra's best-ever recorded version of one of the great Cole Porter's very best tunes, sung at the peak of his vocal powers, over a stellar Nelson Riddle arrangement, played by an absolutely killing studio band. It's a cliche but, when it comes to mid-20th century American pop, it's quite accurate to say: It simply doesn't get much better than this.
You want to listen to Frank's phrasing --where he takes his breaths. The story is that early in his career with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the bandleader taught Frank how to hold a long note while breathing through his nose.
Listening to Sinatra takes me back to how my Dad would love to listen to Frank's early work. When he would sing on TV in his later years my dad would always remind me how great is earlier work was. And he was right.
CHECK OUT *FRANK LIVE AT THE SANDS*
Frank’s song One For My Baby( and One For The Road).either from his 50’s t.v. show or live at Royal Albert Hall early sixties. Need to check out Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers song and dance of Night And Day from the 1934 musical The Gay Divorcee
Jay, you mentioned previously you wanted to hear the rat pack sing together. There is a video called the rat pack, birth of the blues live. It has a little comedy as an extra treat. I really think you should check it out. I love your channel. You two have helped me through some tough times. You are very much loved and appreciated.
Ok...this was quite an age of music and Sinatra was a master in that age.
A new Sinatra song for Jay tonight.
More Sinatra: "You Make Me Feel So Young" / "Come Fly Away" / "My Kind Of Town, Chicago Is"
.. ..............."I've Got You Under My Skin" / "One For My Baby"
Song from the movie, Robin and The 7 Hoods ( A Rat Pack movie). "Style". (Video w/ Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby)
Song from the movie, High Society. " Well Did You Evah" ( video Sinatra and Bing Crosby)
I grew up with this music. There are several versions of this song with different arrangements. This version is from 1957. There is 1 from 1943 & another from 1962. I love all 3 versions, as this is my fav Frank Sinatra song of all time. Ole Blue Eyes & The Chairman Of The Board, the master.
Please check out the live version of Frank recording in the studio “It was a very good year” also Old man river, Fly me to the moon. So many great songs
Francis Albert Sinatra (/sɪˈnɑːtrə/; December 12, 1915 - May 14, 1998) was an American singer and actor. Nicknamed the "Chairman of the Board" and later called "Ol' Blue Eyes", he is regarded as one of the most popular entertainers of the mid-20th century. Sinatra is among the world's best-selling music artists, with an estimated 150 million record sales globally. From 1941 to 1995, Ol' Blue Eyes appeared in 61 feature films plus countless(1000s?) TV appearances. A bucket list show in Las Vegas for decades. The Wikipedia list of Frank's songs has alphabetical links because there are so many! Frank Sinatra is an American institution! One of the greats.
Knowing how much you like the style of Frank (not many don't), you may want to try a more modern take on that style of music. The artist I would recommend is Jamie Cullum who does the classics and his own new songs. Some good classic song versions are "Just One Of Those Things", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "What A Difference A Day Made". His good ones to start with are "All At Sea", "Twentysomething", "Photograph", "Wheels", and "High And Dry". He also wrote and performed "Grand Torino" with Clint Eastwood for the movie of the same name.
Cole Porter was a musical genius, but a conflicted person. There’s a great movie about him with Kevin Kline as Cole and Ashley Judd as his wife Linda called “De-Lovely”. I recommend it for one of your movie night reviews!
Wonderful selection and reaction you guys! Love that you have the broad spectrum of music that you feature and ENJOY. Now that you have heard this song you need to give another listen to LRB's "Reminiscing". The chorus starts "And a Porter tune - made us dance across the room." After the main vocals say "tune" there is a subtle additional background vocal saying "Night and Day" and there are synthesized horns as well. Cole Porter's "Night and Day" made it across 56 years (1932 to 1978) to thrill music fans. Amazing. Peace out.
Not only were the performers "classy", but the audiences exhibited class, enjoying the performance in their seats, mindful of those around them. Sadly, audiences of today, are too often drunk and screaming, jumping up and down, slipping around on spilled beer. As a collective, we need to clean up our act and respect one another more. The greatest music in the world is meaningless if you can't enjoy hearing it and watch the nuances of the performers on stage.
As always, thanks so much for sharing.
Steve
All the greats have a version of this classic Cole Porter song. Whether it's slow or swinging like Frank sang it, this song is part of the great American songbook. Such great music, isn't it?
Frank is the man. The female artists are just as stellar. Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn are two of my faves.
I love this .. I first heard it whilst on a Mediterranean cruise .. it was after the carnival night .. there was a warm Mediterranean breeze blowing the paper garlands around and Frank was singing this on a large screen ...
I saw Sinatra over 20 times, and have collected, along with all of his LP's, over a thousand of his concert recordings. There will never be another like him. Recommendations: Nice N'Easy, I Wish You Love, Witchcraft. For a beautiful ballad, listen to The Very Thought of You.
I 💕 the reaction. I am surprise you hadn't reacted to this yet. I shouldn't be surprised Frank has such a vast catalog. I was born in the 70' s so I was privileged to experience Frank on various tv shows growing up but my real Frank education was radio shows by an amazing Frank Sinatra aficionado Sid Mark. Sid Mark had a radio show called Friday' s with Frank & Sunday's with Sinatra. I use to listen to these programs every week & my relatives use to say where do you come from you must be recarnated listening to Frank Sinatra @ your age ? I see others have already suggested some great songs for your next reaction. I look fwd to it 😊
