Is a recording in a studio "live"? Actually, he's performing under optimal conditions. Performing live before an actual audience is much more difficult - no retakes.
@@josephpaul4548 Yes, he is recording live in the studio, in a way that practically nobody ever does. Sure it's optimal for sound, but he still has to deliver while a full orchestra is playing live with him. In that situation, you don't have the luxury that very successful small bands have of recording for months and mixing endlessly the best takes. When you're working with a full orchestra you can't keep that many musicians endlessly recording. That means he's got to deliver a great performance in very few takes. Plus, his "audience" is fellow professionals, who's good opinion he probably covets more than a non-professional, paying audience. Not to mention that the performance he delivers is immortalized, good or bad, while a performance before a paying audience instantly disappears. If you think it's easy, give it try. He was brilliant at it.
@Parker Allen That's all true, but not just for this session, of course. Weren't virtually all his albums from Columbia, Capitol, and Reprise, excepting the recorded concerts and other special public performances, recorded in this environment? By the time he recorded this (1964?) he was very much at home in the studio backed up by a first rate orchestra.

If I'm not mistaken, also written for the movie Swing Time and sung by Fred Astaire in a 10 minute dance sequence was another song made famous by Frank Sinatra was, "One for My Baby".
They don't call Frank "the chairman of the board" for nothing. Never will be another like him.
Right on. Frank is the man. I always wondered about that name and then I found out that he owned and was chairman of the board for Reprise Records! Even stranger, Reprise had the usual folks on it's label like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Duke Ellington but they also had Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Electric Prunes and Tiny Tim. Super eclectic and progressive artists. What a guy.
When Frank left capitol records he started Reprise Records. Since he was the president of Reprise records they referred to him as "The Chairman Of The Board". true story

So true! A lot of music today has no soul and heart. Frank Sinatra delivers both and then some.
Sinatra was considered to be a "song stylist" - he used his own unique phrasing and that combined with his smooth confident masculine tenor voice thrilled his audience.
Band leaders had to arrange songs to fit Sinatra - not the other way around.
My mom loved Frank and she got to see him in concert ( along with Sammy Davis Jr and Dean Martin) she actually got to shake Franks hand and told him " wow your eyes Really are that blue". Back in the day people called him Mr blue eyes because they were so blue.
My husband & his guy friends all sing this to me. They have been doing this for over 40 years. We recently lost one of the guys. Miss him dearly.
You can never go wrong with Frank! When my now 19 year old son was a baby, we used to rock him to sleep listening to Old Blue Eyes...worked every time🥰
One of my favorite Sinatra songs with an incredible Nelson Riddle arrangement. The combination of Sinatra and Riddle is hard to beat. If you want a bedtime song by Sinatra try pennies from heaven. My father used to sing it to me when I was a child.

I had always heard that one of Frank's signatures was his incomparable phrasing. For years as a youngster growing up in the '70's I really didn't understand what that meant until I realized how cool it made a song he sang to not always sing rigidly within the beat. Now I have an appreciation of Sinatra I never had before, oh, and Van Morrison for the same reason. You two are way ahead of me at the same age in time.
You're going to love him sing "Summer Wind"! It's about a summer romance that ended at the end of the season. And like so many people I've been there too!

I can't see that you've listened to "Young At Heart" yet. You should. It's a really great song. It has so much meaning to me, because of my Dad, who was young at heart his entire 94 years of life. My sister sang it to him at his 80th birthday party as well as at his Celebration of Life/Memorial that we had for him this past April. He loved Frank's music and was a fine singer himself.

Can't forget about all the other crooners: Tony Bennet, Vic Damone, Dean Martin, and so many others. But, Frank was the king.

My father in law who loved Frank had us, my wife and I, play Let me Play among the stars about 2 months ago while he was in the hospital. We played it over and over. On May 30th he went to play among the stars. While he was listening to it he sang it to my mother in law while holding her hand. I will never forget that. We love and miss him so much.

Anything Frank sang was perfection especially when he teamed up with Count Basie. I'd like to recommend more perfection from another crooner Robert Goulet singing "If Ever I Should Leave you". It's beautiful. Another great singer was Judy Garland. Check out one of her two versions of "The Man That Got Away".

@@corinnepmorrison1854 My favorite movie is "Meet Me in St. Louis." I love "The Man that Got Away," but the filming was weird to me. The angles or freeze frames or something. Though she deserved the Oscar. I don't like any of the 4 (?) versions. Nothing personal!! They all did many covers so won't differentiate; but "Embraceable You," "The Trolley Song," "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," "Get Happy," "Easter Parade," "When You're Smiling," her version of "Ol' Man River," her version of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." She did many enjoyable medleys with Liza, Barbara, Frank, Dino, Mel, Gene...her "Dear Mr. Gable: You Made Me Love You" is sweet. "Suwanee," "Chicago," "How About You," "By Myself," "Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody." Michael Jackson's favorite song, "Smile." Through all the versions of "The Shop Around the Corner," her "In the Good Old Summertime" is my favorite and only musical version, good song, too.. "You've Got Mail" was the last version as far as I know. And, for Christmas, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas!" I had her albums when I was a young teen. Read countless bios. Even saw "The Pirate," ha ha. I spend many evenings 40 years later listening to her on YT. And Liza's "Cabaret" songs. Solitary life!
@@cecilias6913 When they were really young, they sang "Embraceable You" together. Sounded great! I've seen her and Liza with the Rat Pack occasionally or just Judy with Frank or both Frank & Dino. Brings a smile to my face to see how cute and affectionate they were with each other. The Vegas Rat Pack shows were just drunken parties, at least when it was just the guys.
"Those horns" are the fantastic Count Basie Orchestra. Saw Frank and the Basie Orchestra live in Vegas in the early 70's. Absolutely the best live music show I've seen (and I'm a rock 'n roll guy).
That sounds more like the Nelson Riddle Orchestra to me. Both great though

I've put that I thought it was Nelson Riddle, but I am more than willing to agree it was Count Basie.
Sinatra is a master of phrasing. Note when he chooses to come back into the lyric after the instrumental break. His voice is one of the instruments. Sometimes he will playfully push the rhythm along. Other times he may hide behind the beat. But this is always in service to the song. He never goes for a dramatic note just to show off his vocal chops. It is always to convey a mood or feeling. Note when he sings the phrase "won't you please arrange it," he is playfully singing, or almost speaking the lyrics and emphatically stops on the last word, it. You get extra enjoyment listening to how he plays with the lyrics.

Sinatra has a “bed time song” called “Put Your Dreams Away”. It was his theme song that he would close out every radio show he did with. Such a slow and lovely song to listen to.

When I listen to Sinatra all I can think of is the feel of a classic men’s suit, complete with hat. My father’s suits and hats he wore to work remind me if this era, and I think that’s why I love his music-it takes me back to those memories of my dad when I was a little kid, a simpler, happier time with so many less complications than life today

Frank had a very unique and organic way of singing. Down to the very way he formed his words and delivered them made his sound iconic. What is a wonderful study sometime is to listen to how his style evolved from when he was in his 20's all the way through his 50's and 60's when his voice warmed and he had the air of the Grand Elder Statesman of music. He earned the respect of everyone in the business, even across genres and generations. So happy you're still enjoying Frank and all the crooners! ❤

I know you've already done Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon", but there's a great version of that song by Julie London. It has a faster tempo and a jazz sound. She was a legendary singer during Sinatra's prime time period.
She played a nurse...Dixie...on the TV series “Emergency” starring Randy Mantooth and Kevin Tighe... Julie’s husband, Bobby Troop, played a doctor on that show...
...and if they get around to Julie London, they also need to do her rendition of _'Sway'_ .

Frank and the orchestra cut most of these straight to a lacquer master disk, one side of the album at a time, all the way through, mistake free. Astounding.
Frankie DOES have an album of bedtime songs! (In effect.) His 1967 album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim. It is one of the greatest albums ever by anyone. Bossa Nova. Frankie style. He literally made the musicians play as soft as possible, so soft they could barely get sound from their instruments. His singing is so tender and heartfelt. Truly a masterpiece.

I absolutely love Franky Baby! This song is one of few that brings tears to my eyes (the lyrics). Many people don’t realize how Frank revolutionized singing. The phrasing, the way he breathes, holds notes. He developed it when singing with Tommy Dorsey and listening to how Tommy played the trombone. So basically Frank sings a little like a great jazz trombone.

My entire my family never missed a chance to throw a party. When I hear this song I see my mom and dad just gliding across the dance floor or the garage or the rental hall, where ever the party happens to be. They were so smooth together, this brings a happy tear to my eye. Thank you

You guys should really check out Tony Bennett! He does a great version of this song which is a bit more emotional and less hard swing. His biggest hit is I Left My Heart In San Fransisco. Or you could check out some of his recent duets with Lady Gaga.
They definitely should! My personal favorite by him was "The Best Is Yet To Come", but I'd love to see them react to anything by him. Frank Sinatra said Tony Bennett was the best singer in the business.

Frank started his career as a singer in clubs with big band groups during the swing era of music. I have my dad's collection of vinyls from back in the 30's and 40's, a lot of them you have to play on a 78 turntable speed, I don't even know where to get one of those. I grew up listening to all of it, glen Miller, jimmy and tommy Dorsey, Bennie Goodman, Artie shaw, cab calloway, a lot of greats.
Dean Martin was a good crooner. Doris day started like Frank too.
Amber, you hit the nail on the head when you talk about the relaxed feeling one gets when listening to him.
My folks were Sinatra's contemporaries--and loved Frank from the beginning. Along with other wonderful, legendary singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby, they grew up with the best. Not to ever take away from all those who have followed, but they were absolutely blessed having those songs as the soundtrack of their life. (And I was lucky enough to hear those same songs from the cradle onwards)
Nelson Riddle never gets enough props for his arrangements. He was always Sinatra's wingman in the studio.

I loved dancing to this song at family weddings with my dad and uncles, they all could dance so smooth and they made sure to dance with all of us. You should listen to “When You We’re Sweet Sixteen” by The Fureys.

He developed a unique way to breath ie take air in via the side of his mouth to keep a note going much longer then the normal singer! He definitely did it his way. He is much loved in my family as my late older brother used to play his Albums until the turned color from black to white. Love to old blue Eyes!!!

The thing about Frank Sinatra is... everything. Ok, he's got talent, a marvelous voice, looks that made girls swoon way back in the 30's when Elvis or the Beatles were just gleams in their daddy's eyes. Yes, he has all that. But he always sounds like he's having *fun*
And he brings us all along...

The songwriters in the 20's, 30's, '40's were geniuses. George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Jerome Jern, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin.Then wonderful singers sang their songs. The ordinary, repetitive junk today cannot compare to
Them. I grew up in the 60's, don't get me wrong, I loved the Beatles and great rock, but always loved
the earlier music.

This song is very very special to me.
I’ve been on my own up here in Montana since 2016.
My wife passed away back in May of 2015 after over 39 years of marriage.
I’ve got 4 kids…all married…and have given me 14 grandkids.
My point.
At least once a year at some event; usually her company Christmas party, they’d get to the dancing portion of the night.
Ultimately they would play this song and I’d grab my wife and take her out to the dance floor and fall in love all over again.
Thank you for sharing and I’m glad you’ve found how special of a crooner he was.

The best of this song is Fred Astaire. Classic by him singing to Ginger Rogers. Light and fun as the words and music is by him. This is too "jazzy".
I tend to agree. This was Frank's "badda bing hey ... JACK" period. Not always a fan of it. There are numerous better versions of this song.

Another two that I LOVE are The Summer Wind and A Very Good Year. My dad often sang us to sleep with Very Good Year. I sang it to my kids and now my kids are singing our grandchildren to sleep with it. Such wonderful songs.
