  • 'War on Standards': Stats appear to show that medical schools are not considering all medical students equally and are putting diversity before quality. Vijay Chokal-Ingam, who's of Indian heritage, says he presented himself as African-American, and it helped him get into medical school. #Tucker

Adam Whitehead Oh for sure, but an Asian or white male can still come from a shitty situation. This is not the solution. Fixing, helping, and preventing those crappy situations is. If we could get everyone growing up with equal opportunity, then I’m sure schools would see a lot more diversity, but fixing those problems is a lot harder than just making it easier for certain people to get into school.

    • @kveks87

He’s not honest. He didn’t attend undergrad at UCLA as a black student. He never had to have a sit down with a professor and ask why his grade was lower although the work shown and answer was identical to another student. I’m sure he never had a remark on a paper written that said “ brilliant, eloquent and beautifully written well done B+” knowing that you had done A work. There’s certain facets of life one will never experience unless they are actually black. That’s why interviews for post graduate admission are more important than tangible scores. In large quality universities with impacted majors graded on a curve you have to fight for every grade especially if you’re seen as an affirmative action case. His book tour and cycling around the country is a complete slap in the face to black students who gone through college settling with a B or lower when they deserved an A.

Which they could do, they have the right to decide who is a member of the Nation, but not how people identify their ancestors. I do have a Cherokee 3rd gr-grandfather identified as Indian on federal census rolls, but I don't know if any of his 11 offspring by 2 different white women made it onto the Rolls. I do know that at least my great-grandmother's parents took her to live with relatives 400 miles away so she would not have to go to the Indian School. She was a beautiful girl......look up what they did to some of those children, you would take your child away if you had the option.

@Saffron Sinclair white? I dont think so bro. We are talking about education here. Now asians have a very high score in literally everything because we are competing in large numbers. And obviously if schools remove the race factor in admission we all know it will be filled with asians more than white and black kids which will lead to problems. So the system is basically saying we need equality in races in schools so numbers in exams doesnt matter. What a stupid world this is.

John Smith Put your listening ears on children 😊 race is only categorization due to phenotypical (physical) features, such as skin tone. For example, there can be white latinos or black latinos, white asians or black asians (especially around the equator, but it’s rare that you see black asians portrayed over media considering the world’s history with denouncing black features, but that’s a convo for another day), etc. Ethnicity on the other hand, is categorization based on cultural background (this is where the Indian comes in). Example ethnicities include African American, German, Chinese, etc. In this case, this man has a dark complexion and other Afrocentric features, so racially, he would he black. But he’s also the son of Indian parents and most likely grew up around Indian culture, so ethnically, he’s Indian.

Those man also had parents who was able to put them in best schools. How would a female who is black or even white female growing up in bad school would be able to get into University like this. Sometimes it's not all about how smart this person is right now. We also have to look into how much opportunity he had. Did he worked hard for his gpa? Yes he probably had, but someone growing up in the hood with bad wi-fi might off worked harder for the same gpa. The point is there is more Asian and Indian man in med schools and we also need black people who are in med school as well. I speak with an extensive global experience: Okay, bravo to him for showing that he is indeed a black (deep dark-skinned) man from India. How many of you have traveled to India? Okay. I have so let's talk....He faked being African-American vs being Indian-American. The mistake US government made is associating African-Americanness with being black. In India, he is a black man vs brown vs white. Get it? He is black in his motherland. Let's continue... Blackness in America is not about color (it is about having some ancestry with Western African heritage, even if you have a beige complexion). Part of his study should delve into the fact that in India, no one with his color or complexion is on billboards to advertise any kind of products or service. Well, I spent a whole month traveling from the South to the North in India. His color (black) is shunned from Bollywood and in media to a large extent. In America where African-Americans are place in a 'second class' category; this allows him to feel superior (as an Indian/Asian) man.... Get it? Okay, let's continue.... I hope he eventually talks about the caste system in India that excluded many groups of people from pulling themselves out of poverty. What is his caste anyway? He should not get away with saying that he was African-American instead of being Asian-American (by law this is illegal). If he could have gotten away with saying he was Causcasian-American he would have do so. He has falsified his identity... Yes, he is a Black, but to state that he is African-America (Black) vs an Indian-American (Black) is illegal (by law). Again, remember India is a country like America with many (complexions/color, whatever you wish to label it). Asia is a continent like North America (with diverse groups of people). So, to sum this up African-American (is not a race, but an ethno-regional identity), Indian-American (is an ethno-regional identity). Black is a socio-politically constructed identity; white is a socio-political identity. By the way, whiteness as defined by US government is extended to North African and Middle-Eastern individuals with brown skin. Think about that for a moment.... Recently, we have been labelling people Brown (this is a label with no real identity). Nevertheless, this gentleman must address more than color in America... Let's go to India. Come with me.

I went to a top ten medical school and i can tell you that there were exactly 10% asian males and 10% asian females in every class. and this was a public university funded by taxpayers. I agree with everything that Tucker (you're the best!) and Vijay said. the excuse that the medical profession uses is that diversity is important to serve a diverse population. they will say that female patients want to see a female gynecologist, for example. or a latino patient will want a latino doctor that speaks their language and understands their culture. there is some truth in that, which shows that patients do not always want the most qualified (academically) doctor, but rather one that they can relate to, which is important in itself. on the other hand, the system is rejecting talented students that are male or asian or white, which is a loss to the profession. and what's worse, that latino/black doctor who got in through AA goes on to serve rich white folks, defeating the justification of AA in medicine.
