when that vegan teacher compared being vegan to the struggles that LGBTQ+ people, people of colour and women face was disgusting. vegan people aren’t abused and oppressed for being themselves. ‘vegan phobia’ doesn’t exist. also, being made fun of for being vegan is absolutely NOWHERE comparable for domestic abuse. she’s giving vegans a bad name. sorry for the rant, everyone have a lovely day

It is not comparable. People hate the extregans, as she says, due to ther extremism. LGBTQ+ people, people of a darker skin color, and women have all been oppressed and still are in some places. There are 71 countries where it is illegal to be LGBTQ+ and countless countries where women are still being oppressed in, as well as racism still being a problem even if it isn't as extreme as it was in, say, the early 1800s.

I knew a vegan lady once. She was in a peer-led cooking class I was in, actually. She would not eat any of the food we made, but she was happy enough to help us make it and if the recipe allowed it, she'd bring in vegan substitutes for things (we made personal pizzas once and she brought in vegan toppings for hers). She told us that she was taking the recipes home and finding ways to make them vegan for herself and would share her changes if we wanted to know them. She also encouraged us to try some of the vegan substitutes she brought in so we could see if we liked it. Sometimes we did, sometimes we didn't, but the fact that she didn't force feed it to us made us more willing to give it a chance. She's also how I learned that you could use mashed banana in place of eggs and I tried it once and my cake turned out amazing.
She was a really nice lady and since she didn't force her diet on us, we one day all decided to make vegan burgers so that she could eat the food without having to bring in a substitute (we voted on the recipes ahead of time). Definitely a good example of positive influence making us more willing to try something.

"what about people on food stamps?"
THANK YOU for saying that. A good chunk of my food budget comes from food assistance which is between $200-300 a *month* so getting enough to eat is soooo hard, and I often don't have energy to prepare meals and premade vegan food is expensive, especially since my bf and I both have specific medical diets. (My doctor specifically told me not to cut anymore foods than what my intolerance requires.) We'd both *love* to be vegan, but as it is, we can't manage. We don't eat much meat or dairy but a lot of shelter food isn't vegan so we don't often have a choice. Being disabled, trans, and poor we have a lot of hurdles before we could comfortably and healthily be vegan, especially since we both have unhealthy relationships with food that border on ED. Needless to say I do get tired of people not being sympathetic to my "excuses". So thanks for thinking of others so kindly.

We all just need to try to do our best and think about changing the things that we can change. Just do what you can other than being vegan. Just try. You don't owe some random bitch on the internet anything. You don't have to be vegan to be trying to do better, and doing better is for you to monitor, and for you to work out. Maybe that is why so many vegans on YT are like this- because you are not making these changes to please others or be praised by others. And almost every time the word “veggiedog” comes out of my mouth, a preteen girl will try to flame me for being vegan. I have to explain to this, like, 13 year old that no, I’m not vegan, I’m vegetarian.
9/10 times they’ll compare me to the Vegan Teacher and I just have to sit there while these girls have mental breakdowns and tape me on IGLive trying to tell all 12 of their viewers that there’s this crazy vegan man is in a hotdog restaurant. I get my veggiedog and they usually follow me to my table, trying to ask me how it feels to be ‘exposed for being an idiot.’
Several times now, my boyfriend has had to show up to his workplace while he’s off shift. He, almost daily, puts on his apron purely to chase off these crazy children. His coworker had to call the police one time, as one of the girls’ parents decided to try to hit me upside the head with a broken plate.
Apparently, having an employee tell your kid off for harassing someone is enough to attempt to cut someone’s head open.

The large companies who produce dairy are definitely horrible, but there are lots of small dairy farmers where I live in the US and the cows and goats are treated wonderfully. We could go to their little shop, grab a gallon of milk, and go visit the cows and goats that made it. They weren't given steroids because the shop didn't rely on that. The cows had space to run around, raise their babies, they had names, everything. The kids of the family got sad when the animals got older and died. Small local farmers can be very ethical to buy from.

Yeah, I'm a minor and live with my parents so I don't have as much of a say in what we buy (but my parents are encouraging me to write down anything I want to eat on the grocery list). My mom buys a ton of milk, ice cream, cheese, and other dairy products from a small dairy farm. The farmers there devised a machine that milks the cows in a more natural way. They always have some baby goats and a baby cow in a little area near the building and the kids are always delighted (myself included, lol) to pet the animals and feed them weeds and grass they rip out of the ground. Away from the main building, there is a giant field where the other cows run around freely and it's enlightening how these farmers treat their animals with care.

As someone who's vegan for almost 3 years now, thank you for this video, especially the last part of it. Yes, vegan activism is important, yes, it's important to advocate for animal's rights, but nothing can be achieved by downright attacking people. Most omnivores are not aware of how cruel meat & diary industries are, and telling them that they're the Antichrist because of a choice they made while they were uninformed just sounds counter-productive. Imho it's way more effective if you simply talk with them as a friend and get your points across, and show them some cool vegan cooking so they know plant-based food is not just salads and veggies, but can be really tasty and fun.
Also, how dare she talk about empathy and then talk down to people who suffer from EDs is beyond my understanding.

      @DatBlackCatKitty 3 года назад +13

@@kellyvega6372 that’s true, and I do that anyway. But generally chips aren’t that healthy. Yes the best source of salt is just salt, and I always over salt my food (I make a lot of eggs because you can typically add a whole lot of salt and hardly really taste it). But meat is generally naturally salty and I add salt to it to make it even more high in sodium. To go vegan would be removing eggs (one of my go tos for high salt) as well as meat and cheese (that also has salt). Of course there is chips but that isn’t super healthy, I can’t really survive on chips.

When I first went vegetarian, I found that I was getting dizzy pretty often. My mom took me to the doctor. They found it was because I wasn’t taking in as much salt. I was a teenager and was really quite surprised that could be a thing. At that age, salt equaled unhealthy because people always talked about the dangers of taking in too much sodium.
I know better now. Our bodies need fat and sodium. Many take in too much, but taking in too little can be just as bad.
I will say, other aspects of my health improved from cutting out meat. My body doesn’t digest fat (especially animal fat) very well. I used to get majorly bad stomach cramps and not be able to relieve myself for weeks at a time.

I used to always buy 3-4 kinds of cheese every week, and now I‘ve started to always choose one per week (the one I feel like most/that matches what I plan to cook). Interestingly, I feel like eating the one cheese that I bought feels more special that eating lots of cheese used to, because now it basically has „treat“ status lol.

@@samiraansari5686 I was in this position for a very long time. I stopped eating meat when I was a child but it took me well into adulthood to also ditch dairy (and even eggs). Since stopping, I've learned that there are hormones in dairy products that are basically addictive (www.healthline.com/nutrition/is-cheese-addictive). Milk is produced by the mother to feed and also soothe her baby, so there are "comfort" hormones in dairy products. That is why it seems so much harder to give up dairy, especially cheese. You are not a bad person for enjoying cheese at all, it's very natural to feel a dopamine kick from your treat. Personally, I was very surprised that after a few weeks of not eating cheese, the cravings stopped. I do eat vegan cheese alternatives, mostly in the form of nutritional yeast for a cheesy taste, but I don't get that voracious craving for cheese anymore.

You know, I really love the concept of promoting "make more vegan choices" over "become totally vegan" because it is so much more accessible to many people, and I appreciate the fact that a larger group of people making more vegan choices over a handful going 100% vegan would make a greater impact on the industry as a whole. As you say, perhaps becoming fully vegan would be the morally positive option but at least it's more widely effective to promote even just making more vegan choices to people that would hesitate to go totally vegan.

They don't kill the chicks and don't sell chicken meat. Some of them sell hen meat, from hens that have mostly lived out their lifespan (but you can easily choose farms that don't do this). It's such a wildly different world from industrial egg production.

I’m an entire year late for this- but my input: I’m autistic and have a really nasty food sensitivity and there’s only a handful of foods I have been able to eat. Milk happens to be one of the only drinks I can handle without feeling very sick, just because my brain rejects almost everything else. I can’t even drink water, bottled or tap. I’ve tried different kinds of milk alternatives and all produce the same reaction from me. Worst part is I’m actually lactose intolerant. So with just that alone I’d have severe difficulty. I appreciate hearing your comment on the eating disorder bit. It means a lot to me.
I love animals and do what I can in other ways, but there are just some that some people are not capable of doing.

Sympathize with people, remember how you once were just like them. It didn't make you a bad person, just someone who didn't know yet, and/or couldn't access vegan meals, etc. Small changes do make a big difference! I see tons of people who aren't vegan drinking plant milk, for example, and the impact is pretty big. We need a change across the board, so workers everywhere are compensated fairly and work in safe conditions. However, once that is accomplished, the mental and emotional toll of killing sentient beings will still remain. When I was in university I was forced to take a Philosophy 101 class, and we read one paper on veganism and had a short class discussion about it. I don't remember what really went on in the discussion, but I remember how at the end, the professor suggested that even picking one day a week to eat vegan instead of animal products could help. And that completely blew my mind for some reason. My whole life, I had only been introduced to the concept of veganism as "all or nothing." So the thought that you could just make more vegan choices some times as a stepping stone was completely new to me.
