I'm suprised Ariana Grande isn't bald yet lol
Jojo Siwa as well!!!
i think that all the time too
You heard her. She sees it. She likes it. She wants it. She’s got it. Money gets her those extensions and wigs and treatments.
I heard she had alot of hair damage from the dye she used when she was acting. So the reason that she used ponytails is that is the only style her hair could go in.
Money
Little tip for people: my traction alopecia is gradually growing back!!! Yay!! In the interim... I use eyeshadow to fill in the gap. Works well. I make sure to cleanse and remove the make up each night and keep the skin clean and healthy 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 good luck everyone xxxx
Awesome that you are well informed on African American hair. Some professionals who are at the peak of of their professions still have no idea about African American hair. I live in Australia an it sucks howmuch of a struggle it is to find someone who even has a clue about black hair and skin.
As a person long subscribed to your channel, and as an African American female, thank you so much for this addressing this subject. I love you, Dr. Dray!❤️
I know right! I saw the picture of the black woman with the edges and I CLICKED IMMEDIATELY! Thank you Dr. Dray!
My exact sentiments!!!!!❤❤
As a black girl with coily hair, . Ive lost hair exactly where I used to tie my hair to pull it back during the weekend for only ONE YEAR. I'm now going to wear my afro after each wash and go
It's crazy how all this happened in just 1 year
Same here. I have couly 4a/4b hair. I pull my hair up in high buns with the elastic bands
Military females suffer from that as well. I try not to do my bun as tight anymore.
Same! I’ve still been getting migraines and a sensitive scalp even with a looser bun though...
My Dad was in the Korean Conflict and he lost a lot of hair. He said it was coming out in his helmet. I think it also has a lot to do with the intense stress that comes with being in a war, not knowing from day to day if it’s your last.
@@zephirinedrouhin3735 probably. I've also had friends deploy during enduring freedom and they lost a lot of hair. Some people think it might also be because of all the shots etc people get in a short amount of time before deployment.
@@katiej4554 me too!
I had the same problem! I love the sleek buns but I have to change my hairstyles up to limit tension
I’m an African American female going through this right now because of how I used to bun my hair. I would section my hair into five sections, put a rubber band around the middle section and then pull back and rubberband each of the other sections individually until I had one cohesive bun and it was all slicked down. That was me trying to make an effort to styling my hair and I ruined it by trying to make it look “neater.” It has started to grow back as I’ve learned to embrace my beautiful kinks and coils and just leave them be. Really great video. Like some other people in these comments not enough dermatologist know about African American hair care issues. Mine certainly didn’t have a clue what to suggest for me so I so appreciate you. ❤️❤️❤️
❤️
❤️same here . Ive lost hair exac5 where I used to tie my hair to pull it back. I'm now going to wear my afro and just let it be
I'm African American family health care provider. Thank you for addressing.
Can you do a video on loose hair styles that are good at keeping hair up without contributing to traction alopecia?
wear your hair out for a while
I would really appreciate a video on this subject as well.
Yes! I have to wear my hair up at work.
Possibly a very loose French braid? Just one braid. Or if you can hair down but contained in a hairnet
Thank you for asking this. I live in a tropical country with warm t stifling hot weather most of the time and having my hair down is not an option most days. Is a loose braid less damaging?
I used to be a competitive dancer, so my hairline is nonexistent....😭
My hairline is wonky and patchy in some spots and I never even thought about the constant bun wearing in ballet for years as why it’s like that lol
Dr Dray was a ballerina
Cindy Duhon I heard in the video, and it honestly makes sense! The reason I say that is because of when she uses her trampoline she does lots of moves seen in ballet.❤️👌
What a great breakdown with diverse examples! I appreciate that you address traction in a relative way for African American hair. I'm enjoying your channel but this was really awesome! Keep up the good work!
I used to be a dermatologist assistant and I love hearing all the information you give. Thanks for all the great content
That’s neat, how’d you go about doing that? Were you a PA or a CMA?
How do you become a Dermatologist Assistant?
@@thewadeeffect most of the ladies I know that assist a dermatologist is either a LPN or RN (a nurse). But I was told by these ladies you don't necessarily have to be a nurse but is highly requested by the hiring manager.
L.A Addicks got it!! Thank you
I experienced traction alopecia. I started Minoxidil, and within a couple months, my hair quickly grew back. Instead of styling gel, I've been using Vaseline. It works really well and also reduced my hair breakage A LOT. It makes your hair feel soft and conditioned instead of hardened and dried.
Did u stop the minoxidil? Did u use the hair u grown from it ?
Happy Monday, Dr. Dray! Much love from your neighbor DFW Texas ☺️ Thanks for the video addressing hair issues!
The way you described putting up the hair for dance is exactly how my mom used to do my hair into a ponytail every single day as a kid. (She also did ballet for years so that must be where she learned.) Love her, but I am surprised I have any hair left on my head lol. So thankful I have no traction hair loss.
Dr Dray my Father was abusive and He pulled alot of my hair out by the root and after that I had balding spots in alot of places just didn't grow back. In the frontal hair line and sides of my head. I had a pony tail in at the time. I was 4 and I have comments from people all the time since a kid! I tried Rogain but but it did nothing. Obviously it is possible because I have it but I wondered if you have heard of this happening to anyone else.
I'm so sorry to hear that..I experienced the same..Hope you are healing from your past..sending lots of love
i am so sorry, are you safe right now? i hope you are. did you think about hair implant?
I'm so sorry to hear this *hugs*
@@sunnynova6 yes I am safe. Thank you for asking. I am 48 years old now. I just wondered if anyone else had suffered hair loss this way.
@@sunnynova6 no I haven't I try to wear my hair down not up. It something that used to bother me alot but I can work around it with hair styles. Plus there so no money for surgery. I have always wondered why it all didn't grow back.
I used to have my ponytail in too tight. I have hair loss from traction plus thinning hair all over. I just started using Minoxidil, I'm seeing positive results in just 2-3 weeks. I love it, definitely recommend it.
Hi salonika,
Did Minoxidil worked for you ?
@@Qendresa-nl5hb yeah. It works. Then I told two of my family members, now they use it & got hair growth too.
@@salonika101 thankss for your answer. One more question. How long after your hair loss you started using it? Because for me its been a long time since hair loss from ponytail and now Im scared its too late to regrow them.
@@Qendresa-nl5hb i stated losing hair 10 yrs. Ago. I Started using last year. I have some bald spots, the growth is slow, but definitely noticeable.
I get the Rogaine from Walmart. The brand name is a little expensive for me.
@@salonika101 Hi! I think my thinning/hair loss in one spot is due to traction also. I've thought about using the Rogaine for a little while to give it a boost and get it growing back. But then I've read that once you start Rogaine, you can't stop or you'll lose what you grew. Have you tried stopping it to see what would happen since yours is from traction? Thanks!
Thanks for the variety of topics, & easy to understand info. And the access to many links. U r Awesome. Thanks 🙂
HI Dr. Dray! Hope you had a happy weekend!!! Cheers to a new day and the start of new possibilities!
You too!
Military girls have the same issues! I just had to stop pulling my buns so tight and I also made sure I didn’t pull it back wet. That’s the worst. Damp or dry and then use hairspray to keep the hairs in place. I could always tell if I had it too tight because I’d get a headache. I’d go in the bathroom and redo it looser. Not losing hair due to a tight bun! Now in my 40s, I have some hair loss right where my bangs are. Might try the minoxidil foam and see how that works.
I’m trying minoxidil currently (only been one month), and I’m hoping it works!
Greetings from New Mexico and thank you for another great video, Dr. Dray. I’m using those Goody clips now instead of tight elastic bands. Have a good week.
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Dr Dray I've been waiting for this. I've worn my hair up everyday super tight with 2 traditional hair ties and I've been waiting so long for you to do this as it's really getting to me and I'm not quite ready for a hair transplant finance wise
Love you xxx Hope you, mum and Tybee are well
We love you Dr. Dray. Thinking of your mommy and Tybee. Hope all is well with the fam. 😊
Dr Dray, how do you feel about PRP treatment, specifically for hair loss? It would be great if you could do a video on that topic
Thanks for the video Dr. Dray! This is very helpful. I've gotten my hair braided once and noticed those little bumps and irritation you were talking about along parts of my hairline. After I got the braids taken out I realized how bad it was for my edges, and they've slowly been growing back. I haven't gotten my hair braided since then (2-3 years ago) and I try to leave my baby hairs out and free when I style my hair. I also switch up my part a lot, which has been very helpful for me because I do like to wear my hair up and out of my face a lot! I also try to massage oils like castor oil into my hair (specifically the areas where my hair had broken off) every so often. These things have helped me see some improvement in the regrowth of y baby hairs, but I'm also a bit curious about the Rogaine you suggested. Thanks for the recommendation!
I always keep waiting for your videos dr dray. You are such a knowledgeable dermatologist I’ve ever come to know. You completely changed my skin care regime. I have learned the importance of applying sunscreen every single day! Now I swear by it and I also keep my skin care routine as simple as possible. Thank you so much for your great work and effort ❤️💕
WHAT! I was just about to look this up! Happy Tuesday dr dray!
Thank you doctor for your advice👍 very useful and insightful.
Nice. Braids are great. Once my friend did crochet on my hair BUT with tight tight tight, rubber band fake cornrows cuz she didnt want to cornrow my long hair. I kept it in for 2 months and it caused hair breakage.
I love the head band on you Dr Dray! It’s so pretty. 💗
You got my attention when you mentioned my hair gel lol. Thankfully I just use it to define my curly hair, not to put tension on it for any significant length of time
Hi, how is your mom doing ? Can you update us ? I miss her lovely personality, Best wishes to her and speedy recovery ♥️
What happened?
Kristina, Her mother has cancer 😢 but they are positive 🙏. I hope that she is doing well.
I know most of your viewers will not understand or benefit from this video in anyway, but I really appreciate this video. Thank you!! ❤️🌻
Happy Monday Dr. Dray!
That’s amazing I didn’t know you were a ballerina. 💕🩰
Happy Monday 🌼 thanks for the hair video
I’m so glad you didn’t mention black castor oil. I’m so tired of people telling me it will cure my alopecia
I look forward to your videos everyday. :)
Hi Dr. Dray, do you think you could do a video on how air flow/fans affect your skin? It’s summer so I constantly have my personal fan blowing to cool me down, but I noticed my skin drying out. I ordered a humidifier from dyson to try and help, but some tips and information would really helpful! Thanks ♥️

Thank you for doing this video 👌 very informative
Dr Gray, what do you think of the Purito oil cleanser? Could you do a video reviewing more of their products? I know you've talked about a couple in some other videos including their sun screen but would love to hear your views on more of their products like the from green oil cleanser and some serums and creams. Thank you!!! You're amazing! 💜💜💜💜
Please make recommendations for hair gels or hair sprays someone can use if they need to wear it every day ♥️☺️☺️
Thanks 😊
Hi :) this started happening to me and I switched over to alcohol feee gel

Thank you for addressing this Dr. Dray! Can Rogaine be used during Post partum hair loss?
Eep, I think I caused this on myself from pulling on my hair when I would study. Its not terrible, but I'm working on it.
Ive been trying to find hairstyles that don’t pull my hair :( but its so hard to study long hours with hair on my face :((((((
jacinta abelia i find that French braiding my hair allows me to keep my hair out of my face without pulling.
@@jacintaabelia9248 I have this problem too!! I also can't fall asleep if I can feel any stray hairs brushing my face cos it's sooooooooooo itchy, so I keep my hair up in a super tight french braid-bun every day and every night :(

Hi Andrea , hope everything is good specially your mom
Thanks Dr. Dray!
Can you review the OLAPLEX hair care range?????????? ps. love your videoss!!!
YES PLEASEEEE DO DR.DRAY!!!!
Yes!!!
Happy Monday, Dr Dray! It never occurred to me that the alcohol in leave in hair products could contribute to this issue. Thanks for the info! I hope you have a wonderful evening! 💖
Hi Mary!! Happy Monday Evening!! Hope You Had a Nice Day!! I'm About To Have Some Tea Join me Sweet Friend? Sending Love and Hugs!! Always! Sweet Dreams!! Hope To Talk To You Tomortow!! XOxoxox!
Great vid? Wondering if you would do a video about drugstore shampoo recommendations. I remember you mentioning Kristin Ess in a previous video, the fragrance free shampoo/conditioner, wondering if you have had a chance to use it?
Thanks!
maui moisture is pretty good without sulfate/silicon/fragrance
How about edge control? Are those bad products? This product is very popular in the African American community.
yes, that can contribute
It can cause breakouts in the hairline
Dr Dray what if they have very moisturising ingredients?
papito yeah what if it doesn’t have alcohol or drying ingredients
@@kavita2937 based on what shes said in her other hair videos, those products can cause build up on the hair follecules and cause hair loss. She said people who dont shampoo very often could benefit from a scalp scrubs between washes
Could you please do a review of the Monat hair products ? I keep hearing how bad it is, but my friend is selling it. I have never heard of the brand before, but I keep seeing posts that it causes hair loss. Thanks ! Love your videos 💕
I’m glad I keep my hair super short!
Love you dr Dray!!!
Very informative,
thank you ;-)
I can never tie my hair back. My hairline has always been messy and uneven with lots of baby hairs and I have scars on my forehead from a car crash I was in as a baby. Whenever I see people with chic slicked-back styles, I always wish I could do them too, but hey at least I won't get traction alopecia (hopefully).
Please share more about being a ballerina!!
You're awesome, thank you
I stay away from anything that's too tight, including my ponytail!
Ontario will soon be entering stage 3!! Alot of hard work and commitment has gotten us here, hopefully we'll be able to maintain 😷🍁
Hi I know this is random but how is it living in Ontario. My parents were thinking of moving there.
@@katiemarie6567 Ontario is a wonderful place to live! It's a very large province! Toronto is it's largest city , and one of the world's most multicultural.Ottawa on the border of Quebec is our nation's capital, a beautiful city with many museum. We have large sections of beautiful green forest along with the Great Lakes, the largest bodies of fresh water in the world. Our Lake House , that I have mentioned many times is in Muskoka, in what we call cottage country. Many small and medium sized towns and cities make up the majority where our citizens live.
I would recommend when it's safe to travel again, for your parents to come and visit Ontario for a week and see if it's a place to call home.
Dr Dray can you please do a video on PRP for skin & hair??? :)
When I was in my early 20's I used to wear weaves and the lady always cornrowed it so tight that I would have a headache for the first few days. I also had those bumps on my scalp that Dr. Dray talked about. I have very fine curly hair ( I'm European) My hair in the temples has never gotten back to its normal thickness :'(
I guess I should keep cutting and pasting this same comment : Thanks so much for being inclusive!!!!! We love you💕💕
Right!
VR headsets can cause this issue too. Like oculus quest 2. The straps are horrible for hair. Also you have the 4 pound or so headset concentrated to one area on the face and the straps rap around your temples scalp, crown, mid hairline. Depending on your hairstyle, how long you use it and what games you play, how tight you tie it and how fast you move it can definitley pull your hair out.
Thank you for this video, I love your content. I’d like to request a video addressing bleach on the scalp. I heard from a doctor that it can cause cancer over time. Is that true?
I have recently noticed this and have stopped wearing my hair like that in the last several months. I wore a tight bun for years. I'm very self conscious
She’s addressing some great points here . I know women are just too rough with their hair and we often forget how fragile it is ! Ladies you do not have to put your hair too tight , it can cause headaches too . Wear bonnets if you’re sleeping , do a hair mask every week too! If you have curly hair try to detangle along with a detangler for less breakage. When you brush to rough you’re also breaking more hair than needed too. To avoid gel usage you can also use aloe Vera gel which is amazing if you want to save your edges and are also prone to break outs . If you do braids, just ask for them to not do them so tight and to not braid your edges away if you think they take too much in the front
Dr Dray, could you also talk about itchy, oily scalp?
Camelia Stoicea: Type “dr dray itchy scalp” and “dr dray oily scalp” in the RUclips search bar to find videos on these topics. 👏
She said to use a salicylic acid shampoo (specifically recommended neutrogena t sal))
Hi Dr Dray Do you enjoy adding black peppercon to your dishes or have you ever tried it?
I have heard it's anti inflammatory
wow now that I know my hair glue is damaging my hair I could reallyyy use a video on gels/mousses/hair sculpting products that are harmless!!
HIIIIIIIII DR DRAY YOU ARE A GODSEND IN THE SKIN AND HAIR CARE COMMUNITY. Thank you for everything you do!! Seriously so appreciative ❤️
Thanks so much
Good to know. Thank you.
Hi Dr. Dray! Please make a video o comment about a procedure call enerject for acne scars. I hace recently talk to a dermatologist in Perú and he says its a recent and effective procedure. I would lime to know you opinión. Love your channel!
Wow thank you 🙏🏾 ❤
My cute long-haired Havanese dog developed Traction Alopecia due to wearing tight scrunchies on the top of her head; therefore, I no longer put her hair up like that. Luckily, the hair around her bald spot has grown out and covers it up for the most part. But now when I take her to the dog beach, I put sunscreen on the spot so she doesn’t get sunburned there. Note that I took her to a vet dermatologist who was able to correctly diagnose the alopecia after her regular vet was unable to; he thought it was an allergy issue. The derm prescribed some medication that she took for months which we hoped would bring back the hair follicles but to no avail. So for those of you with small fluffy dogs, don’t put their hair in tight ponytails or clips, or at least only on special occasions. 🐾 💗 😊
Wow I didn't know thatsuscreen for pets (or vet dermatologist) was a think 🤯😳😖
I have too many flyaways. I need to do a lot to my hair to tame it. This includes small braids, tight ponytails, and plenty of hair gel and mousse. 😭😭
This happened to me🤦🏻♂️I used always get my hair braided really tight and now my hairline is messed up😫
Great video - thank you. I wear gel in my hair and use Eco gel which is alcohol free 😊xx
This is related to hair but kind of in a different direction to hair growth, I know you’re not an expert with curly or coiled hair because you have straight hair but my question is, is there a difference between hot oil treatments and room temperature oils on the hair? I want to know because I read an article saying that microwaving the oils your putting in your hair can lose its nutrients that it provides for you. Even if you have water in a pot (stovetop) and steam the oils in a glass or metal bowl it loses some nutrients but it doesn’t lose as much nutrients like the microwave does
Thank you for all your wisdom and sharing your knowledge!!
You are so welcome
Some other suggestions might be....switching up your part every couple of days, try loose low pony tails as opposed to tight high ones, try letting your hair air dry a few days a week and try claw clips as opposed to pony tails? Are any of these things good to try to avoid this problem!?
Switching up your part works for me.
Wearing a low ponytail reduces traction alopecia in the front of my hairline, the part behind my ears, and at the nape, but I still have thinning around the sides of my forehead. Worth noting, even though I wear low ponytails, I wear still wear them tight.
you were a ballet dancer?! omg that's so cute 😭💞
She does have the typical ballerina look lol
I think i have hair loss on my temporal area. After watching your previous video i lossen my hair style. Thanks Dr Dray. By the way i always watch your videos. ☺
What hair mask do you recommend? I used to use coconut oil my it made my back break out.
I am using Toppik hair fibers to hide my bald spots. Could they clog up hair follicles and contribute to hair loss?
I'm a hairstylist and I'm required to use heat/traction on my hair every day because of my job and it's wreaking havoc on my hair. People wonder why they see my hair unstyled on my days off. This is why. My hair needs a break!
Experiment with wigs, protective styling and loose low buns
Please make a video about the time you were a ballet dancer!
Hi Dr. Dray, can you please do a video on Alopecia Areata? I couldn’t find one on your channel. I have these multiple bald patches on my scalp now which developed over the last couple of months. Are these really stress induced? TIA.
Perfectly timed video! I have a spot near my hairline that I was just wondering might be the victim of traction alopecia. For this issue, if you stop taking the Rogaine, will the effect go away?
Yes, it will, but it won’t cause that hair to fall out right away; it’ll happen over time so it won’t be super noticeable
I tried rogain but I noticed I was getting a headache. However, I think it helped.
