So yes, you have Thai Muslims and Malay Muslims that live harmoniously together and learn each other’s languages and in principle have a lot of similarities in culture, custom, food and religion.
Crossed there tens of time, over last 28 years, last time 3 months ago, absolutely no problem for foreigners, the border crossing is easier than further west because foreigners stay away.

I have lived in Hatyai and frequented Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani for over 12 years. Overall as a tourist these places are far safer than Bangkok. Unless you are getting involved in the fight intentially these provinces are just as safe as any other.

I had seen RUclips videos of travellers saying the Thai immigration would not allow them back into Thailand from Malaysia stating they had to stay in Malaysia for at least 2 days! So I asked the Thai immigration before I left Thailand, they told me 'no' I can't stamp out and then return straight away. I even had the return train booked In the end we were sent to a different immigration office a few minutes away where vehicles pass through. After my wife pleaded with them they finally stamped me back into Thailand.

That first hotel you stayed at is the stuff that's going to give me nightmares I guarantee it will go into my nightmare catalog. I used to be a plumber. I went everywhere The Good the Bad and the Ugly and I wanted this huge dodgy apartment complex with some 500 Apartments all set up like a little city. It haunts my dreams to this day. I have a couple other places that I've been that haunt my dreams to this day I don't know why😮 they're always potentially scary desolate places. Or I definitely know stuff could go wrong and is going on currently while I'm there. That's what that hotel looks like to me😮

It eas so hot, i couldn’t even go to the temples in dress code, & the hotel had bad aircon.
