reasons why alot of people buy replica rims is because companies/used car parts selling authentic wheels at a very high mark up price. the jdm tax is beyond comprehandable, 3k usd authentic te37 reach malaysia become 6k usd
Lol, I think Rays TE37 or BBS RI-A, FI-R etc are extreme example, not to mention BBS RI-D made of 7075. They are day and night even compared to "regular forged" with pre-forged billet + CNC cut spokes. They are the "real forged" throughout the manufacturing process, another reason they are limited to the few iconic classic designs, limited to few popular sizes, and 3-4 times the price of "regular forged". Nevertheless the replicas.

I noticed when I was in Thailand back in 2019, every car and truck was modded. I also did point out that every car has TE37s. I was skeptical about it the entire time!
It is a very common thing in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, among many others. They are generally more accessible to folks for reaching the aesthetic, rather than the real ones, so most chances you see a famous brands' wheels on a random passenger cars, then often times they are replicas. I mean, the real thing usually have astronomically high price (for example, a brand new original set of Work Emotion ZR10 costed an equivalent of a 150cc motorbike in Indonesia)
For track, authentic no doubt. For the street either is fine. Nobody is breaking replicas on the street. I had replicas of OEM S2000 wheels, then had them powder coated which I was told by the internet it would weaken them. Well after 5yrs of hard mountain drives and trips to tail of the dragon, guess what? The s2000 never had a wheel issue ever.

My opinion.. if you cant buy original rims never buy replicas, stick with stock rims instead. buying replicas can compromise your safety. keep in mind. that rims and tires are the things that connects your car to the road, so that makes it the most important part of a vehicle. Buying cheap and knock offs replicas aren't safe. it tends to break in a long use. given the fact that it never goes through a rigorous test like the authentic kinds, so you cant trust its quality and durability.
there are lots of quality rims that aren't expensive as Volk Rays, like Rota, XXR, konig, ESR.. buy these rims instead of replicas.
@baby amaReally!?? I heard a lot, and a friend of mine actually did had an accident, when his knock off te37 cracked and punctured the inner side wall of his front tire, that causes it to blow up, he loses control and ended up swerving on the other side of the road. Fortunately he survived.

Konig wheels make authentic wheels but Rotas, XXR and ESR make replica wheels. Nothing wrong with buying replica's wheels. Some folks can't afford the real deal so they just buy replica wheels.
Totally agree with you. It would be more accurate to call them knock-off rims, especially since you have no idea what kind of quality you’re buying with replicas. There’s a reason the real thing costs the amount that it does.
Replicas might be fine for a boulevard cruiser, but if you intend to demand any kind of serious performance from them you should never take the risk. Cracking a rim at high speed can turn real ugly, real fast.
not all replica rims are bad...the most important thing is to know which brands produce good quality replica rims. but still i dont recommend replica rims if u want to track your car or u always drive ur car at limit..
I agree with you. There's nothing wrong of buying replicas rim since not all of us don't afford to buy the authentic one but bear in mind, don't expect much because what you pay is what you will get. Until today, i still stick with my stock rim because safety is more important compare to the look.
In my country, an original set of enkei wheels are about US$3.6k, where replicas come at about 400 bucks. The difference is absurd. I got mine second hand from a friend who sold it for me less than half the original price, after using for about 3 years, otherwise I would buy a replica.
They're 150 to 550 each in the US. Your country must have really high import taxes.
I not buy only rims but I buy the value inside. I pay for show respect to the designers, Quality, Performance and when I go to car meet I can say “It’s real original”.

My man, u speak so much but all non technical. Car rims r require to undergo testing in EU~ there is a stipulated set of standard requirements; basically material mechanical strength, material fatigue at bend/impact/twisting etc.
Material science - forge vs cast = mechanical properties r different. Forged is thermal cutting to shape from billet vs cast whereby molten metal is set in shape-by these different processes, high temperatures change the lattice metal structure. Henceforth, forge is always stronger than cast n easier to passed strength/fatigue tests. Therefore more expensive - R/D involved in shape/thickness for strengthening/bracing n heat dissipation vs replica(copy-no R/D, further weaker material) will always be cheaper. However, do note when cornering, the centipedal/centrifugal forces act upon the spokes of the rims whilst frictional/traction reaction turned against directional momentum-therefore the rim undertakes a multidirectional forces accentuated at cornering. So, some lousy replicas failed poorly.

Do u know that this is an “e mark” requirement in EU and rims without this “e mark” cannot be sold there as per safety standards.
I deal with the public(businessman n professionals) concerning testing daily ~ and I can tell you; those “Melayu” engineers(Proton) cannot understand the basic S/S relationship; least to understand cementite and pearlite of microstructure of metal.
You underrated peoples’ interests ~ you don’t need to understand the complexities of a mobile phone: better cameras for photo and microchip speed/ram memory for gaming. Same as you don’t need to understand working of ABS/EB/VSC to know safety of a car.

Just not making an argument ~ daily use car or a performance enhanced car; a set good rims is essential because of incidentals as potholes and unfortunate accidents. On these occasions, the rims takes a tremendous impact. The logic is don’t be “pennies wise, pounds foolish”.
Also in Malaysia - the unwise opt for small fuel efficient car = kancil, savy, saga as “run around” cars. These cars r most unsafe if a head on accident occurs - they r “death trap”. It is better to have 1 meal lesser, 1 clothes lesser than risk lives in a “death trap”.
@@angxiang3186 standard ASTM complimce is sufficient for normal used. I u have fascination and admiration of ur deep knowledge, u dont have to impose that as nominal requirement for general use. Jeff is explaining the general guidlines and top tips for general users. My honest opinion about replicas are.. they are actually stealing design from the original maker and this is unfair as their sales and reputation will be affected.

The truth is original rim are made for racing, thats why its called "sports rim". But 99% people who change rims are just for looks.if you roll out in Sepang for time attack obviously go for originals. But if you just cruising 150kmj on the highway replica should be fine. Most important is tires as many people cheap on the tire to reduce overall cost. This is the real problem on safety and reliability

I personally don't think replica wheels are a problem if the quality is good. I want the look but not willing to pay the price if I'm not racing. Counterfeits wouldn't be an issue if manufacturers made cheaper options of the same wheel.
Why original branded wheels are expensive? A genuine TE37 with good offset for AE86 can cost up to RM8000. What so much you say? Usually the original wheels are made from a single piece of metal. Then means they remove and shape the metal to get the final product. This takes time. The machine that does that are also expensive. That is the core price of the wheels. The painting/ finishing are probably not much different than wheels made by casting method. Then there is also proprietary trademark color. Replica wheels usually does not have uniform paint color between batches. But original does. So a TE37 made in year 2000 would be the same color/hue as the one made in 2020. Also only closer inspection you can see the different finishing of the paint and visible cast lines of the replica product.
this is the way i see if IF you RACE,DRIFT ETc competition style ,Track etc get real wheels...if you DONT race and just daily drive on the street etc car meets etc... get the reps... other wise COMPLETE waste of money.

Thank you for the detail explanation. No matter what a knock-off is still a knock-off. The problem here is there's no straight law enforcement against counterfeit, piracy and copyright in MY no wonder they sell fake rims openly on the shelf. They are peoples trade in their stock rims which are the good rigid one that built acc. to mfr specification to some inferior one from unknown origin and that are overpriced just for the sake of the look itself. I suppose we have still a long way to go to get the right mindset on what authenticity and safety of a product is all about.

Very honest review. My don't doubt the quality of material used nowadays cause they basically come from the original manufacturers factories. I do have issues with wheel balancing though, which is why I rather buy original rims. Anyway I rather use stock rims than buy replicas or lesser known brands just because its affordable. Nothing is cheap if you want quality.

Just as with coilovers years back, BC and FA were trash brands. Now they are some of the most regarded.
A wheel example is ESR. They started out as a ebay brand and now makes very strong multi-piece wheels.
Ultimately for pros in autosport don't care half the time who sponsors them.
They'll run whatever as long as they can race.
The branding played a heavier degree in the 80-90s in Japan. And to this day all us Americans want to do is keep up with Asia and Japan because we never had as much access to the same stuff. We'll be the first to not fix a $100 timing chain issue but buy 4000 LMGT4s then have buyers remorse and sell it for 3k. 🤦🏽♂️
Kind of reminds me of Rota. They used to be known for low quality knock off wheels but now I see on their website that they are making flow forged wheels.

in turkey, there are broken replica rims when they re drifting on streets etc. i saw too many examples of broken replicas, especially 17 or higher inches.

Fake all the way. No one uses wheels to race, no one races at all. From what I the media has it everyone is doing dounts and tunes for back fire(flames). Fake work just fine. Plus 4k wheels just to have them stolen and wait months for a new set.

commonly instead of the differential by the price , first try to seek for the physical defect at the rim , then surely the weight , emblem or sticker marking , the spelling and lastly the paint quality of course . for sure your eye will notice it . it's easier when you already owns or had experience in wearing an original rim such as TE37 . and last not least , when you driving you will notice it

Had an experience with RP10X. lightweight and strong.
Had an accident that end up hitting the curb, to the point that my car went up the air for a bit.
However, only the outer protection lip is bent, the whole structure rigidity is retained.
Went to rim repair shop to sort out the bent lip, all good till now.
Since then, I've recommended the flow form rims from this brand to my friends.
Great quality and wont break your bank account.

Here In Malaysia, where most folk love the cheapest things with no consideration for their environment, safety, health and consumer rights. Our income is too low, and cost of living soars to new york grade bullshit. Folks are stressed out to the point where binge spenders and drug addicts are everywhere across.
This is why in here we have a lot of trash brands for tech, massive disposable vape black market, fake skincare products and "sport rims" that crack under the sun.
On the side note, the infamous Top Gear episode where Jeremy thrashed malaysian cars with an actual explosion claiming the company were profit hungry, malaysians were quite mad about it but consumers seemingly only care for the lowest price with no understanding of planned obsolescence has lead to everyone being poor, prideful and stupid.
