Many things to be sad about, agreed. 😪 But still many to be happy about also. And still so incredibly beautiful! 😍🇿🇦 If we have to focus on only the things to cry about, we'll never travel again!
Thank you so so much for this video. My great grandparents lived here and my grandfather grew up here. How lovely to be able to "walk" through the town with you ❤
Hi Curtis & Sonja. You will never understand just how grateful we are for being able to travel with you. No words can express our gratitude. We're seeing beautiful towns that we'de never be able to see if it weren't for Dustbugs. 🙏
We so appreciate your kind comment, thank you. 😊 For us, it's just as much fun having all of you on the backseat as we explore all these seemingly-forgotten places and every so often we happen upon a town like Strydenburg, which we really loved a lot! We look forward to showing you a good few more! 🚙🤩

So the horses race your car. They run for the fun of it. Such beautiful animals. The birds nests on the poles look like ostriches. Wow! You really can't beat a Karoo sunset. All one needs is a nice glass of good wine to go with it. That was a long road, you guys must have been bushed. At least you had a lovely place to stay. That is a paradise of a garden.
The horses were absolutely beautiful, we could've driven next to them for kilometres! 🚙🐎 Yup, it was a long stretch, but we're very happy we got to visit Strydenburg, it is a fantastic little town. Our accommodation was super nice and a great place to chill and relax. 😍🏡
Oh, it was so good! 👌🏻😆 I've never quite been able to understand why school buildings and the likes are destroyed, that makes no sense to my mind at all. Now that's definitely something to cry about! 😥📚
I'm always compelled to read the names and dates on the gravestones and, while all of them are sad, some just seem sadder than others, especially when babies, children and youngsters lost their lives so prematurely. 😥🏛️ I'm so glad you enjoyed this visit with us. 🚙😊
Hi guys amazing video the town seems back in time full of old houses with the front stoop my favourite style. The drive in great birds nests and running horses lovely old style accommodation with wonderful yard lemon tree and thick vegetation oasis in a dry place very unusual design of the church definitely 60s such a contrast to the old DFR church. The furniture factory and showroom so different to see and an emergency telephone number in case you need a sofa quickly lol shame about the museum I noticed the old door and the acitrave of the door surround looks old style. We'll done to the farmer and his wife for taking care of the cemetery. Love the story of the name of the town brilliant lol I think you can see by the school and the show ground this was once a thriving place great video enjoy your droeswors my mouth was watering cheerio till the next one
We've often needed a sofa in a hurry as we travel the long road, we'll try that after hours number next time! 😆🛋️ Those Karoo-style houses are our favourites too, we just can't get enough of them! Our accommodation was fantastic and we had such a good rest that night! It was sad to see the museum in its current state, it would've been such an asset to the town. 😥 Those horses running alongside the car was absolutely brilliant, we almost didn't want to leave them behind! 🥰🐎 Thanks for your company!
And there you went past the farm where I stayed last week, on the west of the N12, halfway between Britstown and Strydenburg...pity you travelled that part of the N12 in the dark because on the east side of the N12 driving south there are many potholes, and somebody painted ANC at every big pothole lol.. Glad you enjoyed your stay in Strydenburg, really a very nice little town. Following you to the next town.....
So we just missed each other! 🚙😆 We've wanted to visit Strydenburg for such a long time now and just never got there, so we went far out of our way to get there and, with the distances like they are in the Northern Cape, we just had to travel after dark, like we often have to nowadays to get where we want to go, all in one week! 🤷♂️🚙 I don't remember the road being bad, so just as well it was after dark! Beautiful countryside in this area, we loved it! Strydenburg didn't disappoint as far as interesting things and buildings go, so it was well worth the very long detour!
Again another incredible episode, its as if you have unearthed the gems above ground with those wild horses racing the Kwid, another stunning scene for the ad, the town itself in the new day, your guest house's garden with enough "runway" to land a Boeing 😊...as you were picturing scenes of how the "skougronde" may have looked, I was picturing the movie that could be made with the operational yet creaky turnstile and the derelict grandstand...the cemetery so lovingly cared for, such incredible people, the church's facade...wow , I have to agree, its incredible design. Whilst you were smiling with your droewors your Kwid was beaming seeing his flag standing tall at the Total Garage...I always wonder about the tales your Kwids share with their fellow hired cars. "I saw a Giraffe" one would say...thats nothing your Kwid would respond "I drove down a Mountain pass that even that Hilux would be too scared to drive down..." 😂
I enjoyed your comment so much tonight! I even read it out loud to Sonia and we had a good few chuckles! Thank you! 😆 The ad with those gorgeous horses and the movie with the turnstile sound extremely doable to me, now we just need producers to come to the party! 🚙🐎 We've waited a long time to visit Strydenburg, we always seemed to miss it one way or another, but we are so happy we eventually did! The facade of the church is indeed fascinating and very unusual. As for our guesthouse, it was an absolute oasis after a very long day on the road! I could easily spend a week there and not get bored of whiling away the time in different places in that garden, or the runway if you will! 😁 There were quite a number of gravestones in this particular cemetery that touched us deeply and we're so grateful that a farmer and his wife have taken ownership of keeping it clean and tidy. Strydenburg is clearly a town full of caring and loving folks, as we quickly discovered in our short time there. The cherry on top of your comment was the part where our Kwiddies compare experiences with the others in the rental car parking lot. I must agree, ours surely must go on adventures others only dream of. Or so I like to think at least. 🚙😍
Beautiful drone footage. My first thought about the name was that there was an argument involved. Little did I think it was about the name which I suppose nobody could argue about. Those looking after the cemetery must be appreciated. Enjoyed the visit. Passed by there a couple of times on my way to Kimberley. Sad though how things are allowed to deteriorate. Hurts.
I'm glad you enjoyed the visit! 🚙😁 The drone images capture the town in such a different light, I was super happy with them too! We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this interesting place and fortunately there was still a lot to see, despite some of the buildings having been destroyed. The cemetery is really looked after well, which is always fantastic to see! 🏛️
What a lovely town. Being an Aussie it looks so much like towns in outback Queensland complete with Budgies (native to Australia ) and B-double trucks!! The drone view really makes this like here!! Happy travels!!
I remember you saying that before when we used to travel in the Northern Cape! We can't wait to go and check the Outback out for ourselves. We have seen some pretty incredible rock formations in videos of Australia, can't wait to see those in person too! 🚙⛰️ I look forward to your comments on our video's once we do get to visit your beautiful country! 😁🇦🇺 I'm glad you enjoyed Strydenburg, it really is a great little town! 🤩
What an exciting day you have planned! Enjoy every moment in historic Berlin! 🏰🇧🇪 Those horses running alongside our car were just fantastic and so very beautiful! 🚙🐎 Thank you for taking the time to comment, even while you're away from home, we appreciate that!
What a nice town and so well kept by the people who live there. I was surprised by this town. Thank you for the drone footage. Well done. The place where you stayed is so nice and quiet. One should stay there for weeks and then just switch off and revitalize your life. Thanks guys well done trip I was so glad to drive with you. Till the next one
Totally true! We could easily spend a week in Strydenburg and just chill! It's a fantastic place and we thoroughly enjoyed our accommodation and the town, there was plenty to see! It's been on our list for a long time now, but we always seemed just to miss it and I'm so glad we finally got there! Glad you enjoyed it with us! Get some rest before the two trips this coming weekend, we'll see you then! 🚙😁
I went to school there before the school and hostel was in such a state, i kept watching your episodes hoping you would go there! My heart is at peace for seeing my old home town. BAIE DANKIE MANEER and MERVROU. By the way the guesthouse owners are my former school teachers 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for watching our video of your old hometown! 😁🚙 It's truly a fantastic place and we're also very happy we finally got to see it! It was rather sad to see the school and hostel in their current state, but fortunately so much more good and beautiful remain in town, which I hope made you very happy! How interesting that the owners of the guesthouse were your former teachers, we appreciate you sharing that with us! We hope that you'll continue watching our videos, we plan on visiting many more interesting places. 🤩

Hi you two! Thank you for this wonderful trip starting with a horserace, high bird nests and an amazing sunset! Once again your drone views and music made my day, showing what one misses if you just rush through on the N12. Your stay-over place looks very homely with that garden, soetkoek and cuppas! I love those gabled and pillared houses in the quiet streets but wonder where all the people are. The school is really sad to see. Where are all the kids? Same with the disused cattle auction site. Strydenburg is surely still a wool sheep farming area? It was nonetheless a very interesting trip being able to track the history through the cemetery and churches. The highlight of this trip for me is that sausage biltong you were devouring at the end. That alone is a good enough reason for me to visit Strydenburg! Thank you again. You'll find me on the road side wherever you go next. Keep safe!
I'm always surprised when viewers ask us where the people are! We actually thought there were quite a lot of people out-and-about in town the morning we were driving around. 😁 Sheep farming is most definitely the main agricultural acitvity in the area, mostly for meat, but a smaller amount for wool. There is a smaller number of cattle farmers in the area too! 🐑🐂 Our accommodation was lovely and so were the skuinskoek and cuppas. The cuppas were much needed that morning, we had another long drive ahead! ☕🚙 There is a school and hostel on the other side of the N12 and you'll see the buildings if you look carefully on the drone shots. The area is called Deetleffsville, but we didn't quite make it there. Stock up on the droewors and be ready on Saturday, bright and early!
Hi U two ...ive been living in the northern cape for almost 30 years ...always stopping at that garage at night ...Strydenburg is too cute for words !!!❤❤❤😊😊😊
Hi there, always enjoy your travels. One day, when I'm big, I'm only 60 now. I dream to follow in your travels. But stay longer in these places. Stay over and only leave when the backside itches. Keep up the great videos.
Oh man, watching you biting off that piece of droëwors made us so jealous and our mouths water.😋 So much to miss when you live abroad. Thanks again for a great and entertaining episode. You and Sonia are the best!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the wonderful town of Strydenburg, it was really a great visit! 🚙🤩 That droëwors was next level, let me tell you! I'm sure you have other delicacies where you live which we would also love to have a taste of! 😁
Howsit everyone. The horses and the camera work while on the move was just beautiful I shouted stop! stop! Curtis, let's see if they stop as well. They still look healthy in what looks like a barren surrounding. The town has beauty with fragments of sadness by ruin and history of those laid to rest, and like you said in essence " imagine what it was like in it's hey day". What is it with those of us who like wrap around verandas and stoops? Why do we yearn when we see them? Ta, for the ride.
We instantly fell in love with those horses, they were just too beautiful! 🥰🐎 They do look in fantastic shape, which was really great to see. 'Fragments of sadness'. So beautifully put, thank you. That's exactly what they are and the beauty which remains always outshines those fragments. Not sure what the lure is with wraparound verandahs, but they really do it for us. It somehow conveys this restful and peaceful atmosphere where long, lazy hours can be spent not doing or thinking much, just being and watching the world go by. That works for me. We appreciate you joining us again. 🚙🤩
Curtis, for me the veranda was at my granny’s house. In those days it was safe for her to sit on the veranda at night on her bench, after cooking on the coal stove , cleaning up after feeding everyone, She would then send us to Mr Croft’s shop to buy Todd o’ Lux. The shop was open ‘till late at night. All us cousins will get one each and we ran around the veranda and jumping over the walls. What fond memories we have of “my granny’s house “
Very nice to visit Strydenburg with you. Also very sad for me to witness the decay of the showgrounds/sportfields. Strydenburg was sort of the centre of the old Griqualand West rugby union which included Richmond, Victoria West, De Aar on the one end and all the way to Upington. In 1966 the Griqua under 19 rugby trials for the Craven team, of which I was part, were held on that premises. Sad for me. Thanks for taking me back
I'm glad you came along to Strydenburg! 🚙🤩 Wow, thank you for sharing that special memory of the rugby trials with us, that must've taken you back in time a bit! 🏉 Luckily no-one can take those precious memories away and I can feel the sadness in your comment! I also appreciate the info about the towns included in the Griqualand West Rugby Union, I had no idea.
Schenkskoek - never heard that name before and looked it up. Ah, gingerbread - nice. And yesterday I found what you call 'rusks' at our local bakery, of all places. They call it 'Zeeuws thee biscuit' - lekker bij de koffie 😋
The school and national monument broke my heart. The vandalism is so sad. Times change and the need for schools dwindles I suppose. Love traveling with you to places I will never get to greetings from Cape Town
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy our videos so much! 🚙🤩 The destruction of schools always sadden us too. In my mind, the need for schools can never cease to exist. There will always be a need for such facilities to educate the future leaders of our country. Senseless destruction like this makes absolutely no sense at all! 🤷♂️
No you naughty I’m in SA and been feeling like kudu biltong all day I hope you enjoyed it. You deserve it for all your travelling to show us what’s happening in the country. Stay safe and happy travels thank you for sharing
I mentioned in the comments of your Windsorton episode that the Town Clerck was Willie Deetlefs. He was also Town Clerck of Strydenburg at one stage and the colored settlement was named after him "Deetlefsville"
Dröewors in the dark is still tasty. A South African is about to set up big time in Berlin with Biltong, Boerewors, Dröewors and products -the whole tooty. Just opened today. He hails from the Free State, a real farm lad I'm told, so it might not be so bad for us ex-pats.
I'm glad you enjoyed the drone shots! 🚙👌🏻 I am not aware of any concentration camp in the vicinity, so assume the graves are those of townsfolk or from the surrounding farms.
We're on the road for many hours a day and are just too tired at night to braai, so we opt to eat out or buy ready-made food we can enjoy at our establishment. We braai enough at home! 😁
Sedert julle besoek aan Strydenburg, is die geboue by die skou gronde afgebreek. Dus is jou video profile pic nou uniek.... In die begraafplaas wat julle besoek het, is n groot klomp van my familie begrawe, onder andere my oupa en ouma....

Lol my gums were tingling for that dryworse. I do miss SA food
Beautiful garden but I’ll be worrying about the crawlies/slitheries hiding in that greenery yhoooooo!!!
I mentioned in the comments of your Windsorton episode that the Town Clerck was Willie Deetlefs. He was also Town Clerck of Strydenburg at one stage and the colored settlement was named after him "Deetlefsville"
Enjoy your Dröewors. At least we don't have Loadshedding.
Touché! 😆 Given a choice to pick between droëwors and no loadshedding, I'll struggle if I'm honest. One sounds just about as good as the other! 🥓💡
Dröewors in the dark is still tasty. A South African is about to set up big time in Berlin with Biltong, Boerewors, Dröewors and products -the whole tooty. Just opened today. He hails from the Free State, a real farm lad I'm told, so it might not be so bad for us ex-pats.
Waardeer. Veral die Drone .
Begraafplaas uiters intresant. Kan dalk Konsentrasie Kamp grafte wees ?
I'm glad you enjoyed the drone shots! 🚙👌🏻 I am not aware of any concentration camp in the vicinity, so assume the graves are those of townsfolk or from the surrounding farms.
Too shameful for words the destruction and desolation
Whey do not Braai?
We're on the road for many hours a day and are just too tired at night to braai, so we opt to eat out or buy ready-made food we can enjoy at our establishment. We braai enough at home! 😁
Sedert julle besoek aan Strydenburg, is die geboue by die skou gronde afgebreek.
Dus is jou video profile pic nou uniek....
In die begraafplaas wat julle besoek het, is n groot klomp van my familie begrawe, onder andere my oupa en ouma....
The school was totally destroyed yhooooo🙆♀️ All I can say is why though😳😳😳 No sense in that at all….
I will never, in one million years, understand why buildings have to be destroyed in the name of dissatisfaction for whatever reason. It's unfortunately become the culture in our beautiful country. 🇿🇦😥
