- Our visit to the historical village of Thomas River was truly amazing. After hearing recommendations from our viewers, we decided to explore this charming place, and it exceeded our expectations. The meticulous restoration of the village transported us back in time, with highlights like the enchanting old church, informative museums, and a delightful bar and restaurant venue. Spending the evening there was a privilege, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the fascinating stories and heritage of Thomas River. This village with its rich history dating back to 1801 is a must-visit for anyone looking for authenticity, peace and quiet, away from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life. It was a special and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #thomasriver

Very special and unique. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🚙🤩
And what a fantastic little dorpie !! Thanks❤
That tracks in the mist ❤
Those got Sonia going all lyrical on me. I'm so glad we went looking for the old station, the mist made it all the more special. Thank you so much for watching and supporting our channel. 😊🛤️
And the food is good as well.
The food was divine! Sonia still talks about how good the shepherds pie was! 🤣🍲
One of your best videos.... whach it 3 times
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed Thomas River! 🚙🤩 I could visit this place over and over again.
Wow, wow, wow. I love Thomas River. ❤
Yup, I know why. We love it too! 🚙😍
Quite a veriety of modes of transport, loved the mobile home, eish.🙃🙏🎶🎶🙃
The motorhome was absolutely fantastic, I couldn't get enough of it and found it incredible that it was from so long ago already! Those old items were super interesting to me too. 🚙🚌
What an amazing place. Thank you for taking us with you. Was wonderful to see all the old things
Our pleasure! I also thoroughly enjoyed all the old items in the library and the museums. Each one of them belonged to someone and can tell so many stories of a rich past, I'm sure. I appreciate you hopping on board to explore Thomas River. 🚙😁
This is what being a transporter is all about the brotherhood help one another to grow and be the best not the competition
Luvit! I'm with you everywhere you go in the Eastern Cape. This place is just incredible. Such a pleasant surprise.
We were just as surprised when we drove into Thomas River! We never expected to find so many treasures or to overnight there. All-in-all it was a fantastic experience for us. I'm so glad you enjoyed the trip too! 🚙🤩
What a beautiful little place is Thomas River. Thank you for sharing. Drive safe
Our pleasure, thank you for travelling with us. 🚙😁
It was really nice to see the DVD and book collection. As well as the other things including that Rugby camper van. Really love the design. Really cool. 👍
I'm so glad you enjoyed that, thank you for coming to Thomas River with us! 📚📀🚌
Hallo to you both. Another unheard of place. Looking forward to the visit. Thank you!!!!🙃🎶🎶🙏❤
Yet, lekker!
@susannaemmerich1 I have no doubt that you'll enjoy it every bit as much as we did. It's an amazing place. 🚙😍
First time seeing the Rugby camper van!! Wooow 😄🏆 Beautiful Editing, Great Choices Of Musical Backgrounds as always!!! A great episode, yet again!!! My wife and I will certainly be putting Thomas Historical Village in our list of locations to check out. As Always, Thanks for sharing Our Countries beautiful History, DustBugs Travel!! 😍 As we patiently wait For The Next Novel Inspired By Thomes Village 🍻🍺
It was my first Rugby campervan too and what a treasure! 😍🚌 Thank you for your kind comment, editing our videos is an enormous job, so I'm always happy to hear when that is acknowledged. 😊 You and your wife will love, love, love this place. If ever possible for you, check it out. I have a sneaky suspicion you may wait a very long time for that novel from the pen of Mrs Station Foreman! 🤣📚
@@DustBugsTravel!!! We shall Patiently await the Award winning Novel From The One And Only Mrs Station Foreman! 👑📥😆🧑🎄
Love the aqua rooftops. Although there's many South African places which are special, there's something unique about this area. In my opinion, it looks like they do more with less. Not easy to pull off without dedication and hard work. Something in which South Africans are not allergic to, unlike a lot of places on the globe. Unfortunately...
Yup, I know what you mean. And they value history and are keen to make major efforts to preserve it, that's what I also enjoy very much. The folks at Thomas River did an unbelievable job restoring the place to what we see today. I'd go back there again and again! 🚙😁 It makes me happy to hear that you loved it too, thanks for coming along! 👍🏻
Hi you two! Blue skies and gravel roads into history! This place is fantastic. Hats off to the people who have done the meticulous restoration work and to those who are keeping it up. I really hope that it will receive enough visitors to keep it going in the fine state it is in now. I have never even heard of the place, but is now on my list of go to's for sure! Will need more than a few days to see and visit the museums and the surrounding reservation(s).
Thank you for this fascinating exploration! I'm ready for the next trip.
Keep safe!
We're happy to share this incredible place with as many folks as possible to also go and experience the magic for themselves. 🚙🤩 The current owners did a magnificent job restoring and maintaining this place. I was literally like a kid in a candy store with everything there was to see. I hope you do find your way one day to Thomas River, it will not disappoint, that much I can guarantee you. 😁
Thank you for this trip. Amazing that there are so much to see. The church and library was nice to check. We have such beautiful places in our country. I am on board the next one
Thomas River is a super cool place and I'll for sure visit again. Such beautiful places which we had no clue about, that is why we will continue travelling. 🇿🇦😍 We look forward to showing you where we were headed next. I hope you enjoy that one too! 🚙😁
They run a diesel locomotive along those tracks on the section between Queenstown and East London. We all stayed in the Station Masters House at Thomas River in 2015. Ek is nou honger vir daardie pie!!
What an amazing place! Kudos to all of those who work so hard to preserve the country's heritage.🙏
I echo those sentiments. Without folks who steadfastly believe in the preservation of history and historical sites, folks like us wouldn't be able to visit places like these and spread the word for more people to go and support them. 🚙😊
Thanks for showing us Thomas River! Never heard of the place. Also nice to hear those nightjars calling: "Good Lord, deliver us!"
Thanks for coming along, it's a special place which has to be shared. 🚙😍 I also love the call of nightjars and I listened to them for quite a long time that evening. 🐦
Wow. You could knock me over with a feather, never in my wildest dreams did I think a place like that existed. Totally go smacked. Thank you so so much . Are my eyes deceiving me? Didn't see many burglar bars. Nice to hear Joan Harrisons name, she was my uncle's sister in law🏊. Looks as if Dusty had a whale of a time too.🚗🚗
Nope, there aren't many burglar bars. I don't think there is any need for them. With only one road in and with a boom and camera system in place, I'm sure it's too much of a risk for anyone to come and take chances in this special place. 😨 How cool that you can call an Olympic medallist family! 🏊♀️ Dusty was totally bushed that night after all the fun he had that day! 🚙😍🧸
Never heard of Thomas River before. What a wonderful find! The gravel road is so pretty, especially the old bridge over the river, that takes me back a few. Love the church full of bees. Would love to explore that library. The old motor home is amazing. The model railway look just like my dads old Hornby trains. Wow! The old telefoonhokkie with the old telephone!! This place is just so rich in many things to see. Back in my youth my dad had a Kodak projector and as a teacher he would get movies from the education department. So once a fortnight was movie night!! I can remember when petrol was bought in gallons. Sjoe!! I am old!! The old station is so special. Its so amazing how well preserved ll these places are, this whole town should be declared a national monument. So amazing to discover the old rail bridge.
Wow how interesting and the old camper van made by Rugby - out of this world! Didn't know that Thomas River existed! Awesome visit - keep up the good work! Safe travels you two!
That Rugby campervan was my favourite too! 😍🚌 We only learnt about Thomas River a few months ago when we came close, but I'm so glad we actually visited this time. It will forever be one of the most memorable places we've visited.
So special, thank you. That hour flew by so quickly , such a gem
I know! I can't believe we arrived mid-afternoon and the three hours I spent walking around there, felt like five minutes. A fascinating place! 🚙😁
@DustBugsTravel have immense love and respect to those preserving our history, and you guys showing us places we can't get too!!!
Now that was just a fantastic visit to Thomas River. What a great place. Curtis remember that phone booth used to be called a Tickey Box. The curry looked yum as well as that nice Shepherds pie that Sonia ordered. Thanks both of you for showing us this gem of a place. A credit to the owners for keeping the history alive with the museums. You sadly did not make it to Pacaltsdorp historic church on your visit to George. We used to stay at Carmel Christian guest Farm in the 1960's. I attended Manie le Roux Primary and Mr Weppenar was our Principal. Then off to Outeniqua Hoer Skool for Std 6. So Sonia and I can share some memories of the sixties and early seventies in George. I loved the old library with the oak tree out front. Used to get all my Tintin and Biggles books there.
This is a fantastic place, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🚙🤩 I remember a tiekieboks very well! 🤣☎️ The owners are doing a sterling job to maintain this historical village. 👏🏻 If we have to visit every single place in a town or area we get to, we'll never be at home or get any work done. It's simply not possible. 🤷🏻♂️ Sonia made it to George in the mid-70's, so you may have left by then.
I agree with you about not having enough time to see everything. We sold our farm at Hansmoeskraal in 1974 and bought a Boer Bok farm at Withoogte just outside Uitenhage. Did Sonia attend the new Primary School which replaced Manie le Roux ? So many fights at that Primary school between us Rooinekke and the Rockspiders. York High English school was being built in 1974 when we left. Interesting that her brother also attended Outeniqua High. So sad that George was living up to its reputation of Cold And Wet when you were there.@@DustBugsTravel
Sonia attended the George Preparatory School from 1975, she's not familiar with the other one you're referring to. 📚
Hello Ma’am and Curtis,
I am still following you on every visit. Thank you for this fascinating and most interesting place. I was aware of Thomas River, was mentioned a lot by friends in Stutterheim. But I was so close to it, never visited.
I salute the people that look after the place, just hope the next generation will keep it up.
Thomas River, two train stations, reminded me of Thomas The Train tv series. Ma’am the station master’s wife might consider Thomas River Train as a title for her new book.
I just loved all the items in those buildings and would love to wander along and thoroughly explore, too much to mention.
Thanks you lovely couple.
Frans
The folks who currently own Thomas River, did a fantastic job of restoring and maintaining the place for tourists like us to take a walk through the past. 😍 The few hours I walked around there, flew by in the blink of an eye, it was fantastic! I'll be sure to pass on your proposed title to Mrs Station Foreman, thank you for the fantastic suggestion! 😁🚂📚
Hi guys when I think I've seen it all Thomas river shows up .down gravel Road to a trip back in time I could see you two were in your element and so was I!! I loved every thing about it the history about the name a British deserter killed by a poison Bushmans arrow unbelievable you could not make it up !!! .it seems like the Wardle family have a great deal of history here and how great you met the present generations. My brain and eyes struggled to pick up the old item's so I'll just list a few the Rugby camper van crazy love it .cut the legs off the chair to wash the kids in a tin bath like in my uncles house. The old webbing and helmets so many memories. The repurposed bar from the post, office also the poster of the showmans traction engine as it relates to my ancestors. The Sap station with the rondevelles accommodation. The old train water pump building photo spot .three dustbugs on the stoop set the scene ( my gills were flapping with that cold larger lol) I think you two should write a book ( Railway tracks in the mist a African adventure) I would definitely read it .guys this video has blown my mind wonderful on a rainy day in kent. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
I know! Thomas River was the perfect place for that particular day. 🚙🤩 The Wardle family definitely has deep roots in this area and it was great to get some of the background. Railway Tracks in the Mist, you say! That works! 🤩🛤️🌧️ The Rugby campervan was definitely a highlight for me, but then again it's hard to pick one here. Stay dry in rainy Kent and thank you, as always, for watching!
Oh my what a lovely place. That sundowner stoep was something else. So glad you called it a stoep and not a veranda. Thank you for that visit.
Stoep / veranda, all the same to us. 😁 It was a lovely evening in such a peaceful place. I'm glad you came along and so happy to hear you enjoyed it too. 🚙😁
Hello Curtis Sonia and Dusty, it felt like I nodded off on the back seat and got transported to yesteryear, what an absolutely amazing place, almost magical. Ready for the next stop, safe journey ❤
love this video! so much! love the music!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the music too. I picked an extra dramatic ending for the abrupt drone landing. 😁🎶
From my couch 😊 ~ what a fantastic TOUR with you guys ~ thanks for taking us to the most unique dear outback cool places in this amazing old country of ours ❤ we have SUCH a precious history.
Thank you, I'm glad you had fun exploring Thomas River Historical Village with us. It is such a treasure and we're happy to share it with as many folks as possible. There is no end to the rich history and breathtaking beauty of our country. 🚙😍🇿🇦
This is my favourite episode thus far! Thank you for letting us tag along.
Thanks for this great video. I've been past the turnoff but never been to the village. It's beautiful, different and theres so much to see. Thank you!! ❤❤
I'm very happy to hear you enjoyed Thomas River! 🚙😁 Perhaps next time you'll turn off and have a walk around there yourself, you will love it even more then!
ONE OF YOUR BEST ...THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Epic video, you two know how to find the extraordinary. I cant tell you how many times i have driven past this place and never thought to go look. You know what im doing next time I am in that neck of the woods. I cant single out anything, maybe the rugby camper. everything was mindblowing. And then all the memories seeing all the old phones and items in the museums. Such a worthwhile visit this will be, thank you so much for taking us along for the drive
Thomas River was most certainly an extraordinary place. 🚙😍 You should take that turnoff next time and go check it out. Have lunch while you're there, the food is fantastic too! 🍲 I'm right there with you, that campervan blew my mind. Way ahead of their time those folks were, I loved it! Thank you for always coming with us, I hope you know it means a lot to both of us. 😊
@@DustBugsTravel im not missing an episode. I seen everyone you know mos. From the ben..ning..ging.....lol🥁🥁🥁🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🥁🥁🥁👆👆👆👆🤣🤣🤣😍😍
A first time for a lot of us!! Unfortunately the sound is very soft! Would have loved if I could hear more....
In any case: a brilliant find!❤❤
I'm not sure what problem you're experiencing with the sound on your side, it sounds just fine on our end. 🤷🏻♂️
I am going to try and re-run it.....The 2nd half ,in the car, was perfect! But while you were walking around, there was beautiful pics, but no sound...! It is the 1st time that it happened... Such a stunning place!❤❤
I did the rerun and it is 100%! I tried to watch your programme during our xxxxx load shedding ,after downloading it and the jealous government did not want me to have good time....😢😢 Now everything is perfect!!Thank you once more!!❤❤❤❤❤
Hello you two.. Great is though faithfulness!!
I am enjoying Thomas river so much!! Astounding!! Thank you sooooo much!🇿🇦💞😊
This town reminds me of the Natal Midlands!
We got to watch the whole episode! We were there around 2015, unfortunately it was only a brief stay. We stopped there for lunch (I think the menu has improved since then!). Got to look around at a number of the incredible museums and other exhibits and points of interest.
Thank you for your wonderful video covering about 90% of what we missed out on!
And thank you to the family and people who have preserved and developed such a wonderful heritage site.
Luv your videos brilliant video again keep up the good work😊😊
Very nice, we use to drive past Thomas River turn off, but never turn in.
Brilliant! I grew up on a farm in the 1960's down the Toise River/Henderson turn-off that you passed at 1:08 into your video. My grandmother had a trading store at Toise River. Such memories! 🥰
Loving your videos - thank you. I grew up in Queenstown so love the Eastern Cape episodes. Look up Basie Diedericks, he is a train driver between East London and Queenstown and also has a RUclips channel. You will be able to see your stations from the train driver’s perspective. Keep up the good work and safe travels. Cheers, Kevin
Die ou rooi postbox en phone hokkie. Cricket veld. Nog seker mooi
Hi guys, love your show, you must try Napier in the Western Cape, also nice and quiet
We visited Napier long ago already and stayed on a farm outside the town. It was shortly after we started our channel though, so we didn't explore as in-depth as we do nowadays. You can check out Episode 40 if you like. 🚙😁
Dustbugs in the mist
it must be cool in the mist?
It was rather chilly. 🥶
think of the time it took to build that and dress the stone?
Yup, I only have the highest admiration for the stonemasons of that era. 🧱
We enjoy your programme, the history and points of interests ..however your episodes are far too long! It used to be about 20 minutes now it stretches to an hour or more ..you can certainly cut some content out!
I've been following your trips for months now, thanks. BUT - and I'm not even religious: please don't walk onto church's pulpits, it's just disrespectful.
🚙🤩
