Kenny, I have been following you for quite some time now and you never fail to impress with your depth of knowledge and continued support of the Reaper community by sharing it with us all. Truly, Thank You!
Wow, just the thing I needed. I'm using markers in Reaper as a sampler of sorts, like a songwriting tool , so I can test live playback of sections and see how they all fit into one another. This is perfect for me instead of having to use another program. Thank you.!
Wow that is a powerful tool and feature. Great information! Works great Thinking this is another way to output stems in real time, ride the mixer levels etc.... Tons of possibilities love the new intro
That's amazing! We do live looping with my band, and I needed a way to be able to have master mix and final routing for all projects in one, and I think this is the solution for us. Thanks!
I can finally record my vocal commentary in Reaper while mixing instead of having to strip it from the OBS file. Makes everything easier when creating tutorial videos. I can see lots of other uses as well.
Another solution in Mac is; 1) Create an aggregate device (for example 2 channel built-in or external sound device and Blackhole 2 channel virtual sound device) 2) In Reaper's audio device preferences set the input to Blackhole 2 channel and output to 4 channel Aggregate Device 3) Send the first tabs master output only to the Blackhole, in this case channels 3-4. 4) In the second tab set the audio track input to 1-2(Blackhole). Master output already goes to 1-2 (built-in)
it should be noted... that by using the loopback method... it disables the standard rearoute outputs to external audio programs(unless this has channged in recent updates)
Makes also a big difference in rendering, on my system, tho. Now I have to render only 1 track with plugins included. Every time I see a new tutorial from you, I learn important stuff. Thanks for providing us with all these great features in Reaper. PS: also a great song, it's in my favorites now. Great work.
Thank You!!! I have been trying to figure out a setup where I can record a live jam of my guitar/vocals along with my keyboard backing accompaniment while recording video on my phone but I want to be able to stop Reaper to edit backing parts or arrangements without having to stop and start phone video. Leaving the phone recording while Reaper is stopped creates too much syncing (creating multiple start points). My solution was to have a stoppable Reaper routed to a Reaper that records continuously with the phone creating only one start time to sync. I have tried opening two Reaper apps and routing via ReaRoute but every time I open my setup the audio devices all need to be reassigned. So recording from one tab to another should solve this issue seeing as it is one Reaper running on 1 soundcard vs 2 Reapers with independent soundcards. Testing now 🤞. It would be really great to be able to open a template, start phone recording, start Reaper recording, play, import video, done! I could do a jam or quick song every night after work and not waste time setting up Reaper to Reaper. I have also made cycle actions that split, group, colour, and add regions at every 4 bars and another custom action that cuts out unwanted 2 bar segments on the fly with ripple edit on, editing my jam as I listen back. Anyway Thanks Kenny
This will definitely speed up my workflow for mastering and reference track comparing! A HUGE golden nugget this was, thank you Kenny! Also I like the new intro for your video. The project file you showed as an example had a synth wave texture to it - who is the artist if I may ask?
Great feature! But I checked it just right away after I saw this video and ... I made working this smart trick (recording from mastering output) without these manipulations with ini file because my interface card (MOTU M4) have a Loopback mix capabilities by default. I just create the blank tab for new project, set up the loopback mix 1/2 for AUDIO IN, pushed REC and started the mastering mix from the parallel tab with loaded project. It works! I'm really so happy with it - soo helpful, it can save lot amount of time =) But (again) only if you changed the ini-file you can record the selected tracks through the separate outputs (created Reaper`s loopback (not a MOTU M4's in my case). Well, so I did the changes in my ini file too. I tried to do the same recordings with just a MOTU M4`s loopback mix technology with Reaper`s ReaRoute/ReWire - it didn't work at this time. Ah yes, one important thing. If you changed the ini file (just like in this video) you will lose all ReaRoute channels. Thank you very much, Kenny. It's really worth video tutorial.
Can I code reaper to allow Undos while reaper is recording like this? I like to edit and record at the same time and it’s a pain when I mess up an edit, because I have to wait for the recording to stop, before I can fix the bad edit.
Gonna need more HDs... Background recording is very interesting. Is there a way to ditch it on the spot from within Reaper without having to go and delete it in the OS folder?
Can someone help please I am new to reaper and I accidentally clicked the little red X by the tab at the top I think it’s the project tab. But I had 160 takes just all under that one tab and when I clicked it it erased everything. I did save before this happened tho yet when I re launch reaper it doesn’t load how it was it loads blank.
Excellent. Question - does Reaper has a built-in ability to loopback midi or will it only work for audio? Have been using an external midi loopback device for this but it's something that needs to be set up separately (a nuisance).
@@REAPERMania on the pc, I use Loopback Midi. It works though would be better built-in. (FWIW, the reason I do it is to record midi as input, but _after_ transposing up/down an octave. Very useful if you are tracking session horns plug-in or whatever. Makes it very easy to switch between instruments on the same controller.)
Love your channel, Kenny. But sadly this does not seem to work for me. I'm running Reaper 6.68 under Windows 11. As per your video, via the resource explorer I update reaper.ini in the [reaper] section with a reroute_loopback=2 & save it. When I restart Reaper & expand the Route button on (say) the master track there are no loopback options. I'm pretty confident I'm doing this as per your instructions.
Hey! I've done exactly like you did, but for some reason my loopback inputs and outputs are called "Aux Loopback", and the signal doesn't go through. Do you have any idea how to fix that?
Hello, great video! . I tried this and worked . However It is not possible to record in a project tab with a different sampling rate or bit depth. I mean, Is there a way to record in another project tab with a different sampling rate and bit depth???? or Is there another way to do it?
Something like this is very specific, so you have to make a custom action. You can find it in the action list, then click on "New action". You can then combine all the actions you need into that one action, then assign a keyboard shortcut to it
@@Jazzmasterer AFAIK actions are only applicable to the active project tab, can't manipulate transport in another one with them probably a script is needed
@@ARE_YOU_SICK_OF_YT_CENSORSHIP You are correct on actions only being on the active tab. That's why there is a "Next project tab" or "Previous project tab" action that can used. A script would make it run a little bit cleaner, but is not necessary, and takes more know-how to make.
@@Jazzmasterer actually yes, if it's meant for recording then recording can start earlier than the playback and the lag introduced by switching tabs with actions won't be a problem someone also asked if playback can be started simultaneously in more than one tabbed projects, which is something this method will probably not be suitable for

I have been messing around Macros custom keybinds in reaper. If your audio interface supports the "loopback" function, then you can record sound through it.

this is a great titanic job i respect you Kenny!!!
Wow! That’s a pretty amazing trick. So cool. Thanks.
hi thank you for making so many tutorials on reaper, I've learned so much from you!
With all this power I see myself completely abandoning Ableton live
I only use Ableton when am performing live ether as a keys rig or backing tracks...Since discovering Reaper,I haven't turned back.
Only thing Reaper needs is a better sampler.
