SPOILERS (Just my interpretation of course) First time I watched I thought the mother was crazy, ruling her household with a narcissistic and obsessive compulsive world view that she projects onto her daughter. However, a second look reveals that the mother is just as much a victim as the daughter. A victim of the father’s constant paranoia and psychosis. Their home is filled with disturbing artwork and grotesque Frankenstein taxidermy projects. A sign on the door demanding to keep it locked, and a glance at a page in his journal reveals a paranoia under which he demands everyone in the house live. He’s taught Rachel many things, like throwing a bone in the forest to see where it leads to, picking up dead pieces of hair and flesh in the forest and holding them to her ear to listen. We know she didn’t learn this from her mother who wouldn’t dare go into the woods for fear of mud and dirt. Her father was out of his mind, and clues in the film point to Rachel possessing the same mental illness as her father. She seems to hear and see things that aren’t there, and as the film progresses and the imagery of the millions of bugs crawling gets more and more frenzied, that’s Rachel slowly succumbing to her psychosis. That moment in the woods, staring into the goats dead eye, is the moment her mind left the “in-between” and her inherited insanity rose to the surface. She then goes home and bludgeons her mother, ties her up, vacuum seals her father, and recites a poem about how she found the “in between” in the woods. Even after his death, the father is an ominous presence in the house. The women are afraid of offending him, worried he’s pretending and that he’ll overhear something he doesn’t like and won’t come back. They’re convinced he’s testing them so they must be on their best behavior, doting on him, bringing him gifts and reciting poems and making sure the house is clean to his liking because as the mother says “you know what your father is like”. She is insistent on carrying on as normal and pretending like nothing bad is happening, because that is how she copes, and perhaps how he expects the household to cope. And if she follows his rules, he’ll notice and come back. This film is Intuitive and clever and grim, the imagery is spot on but the symbolism is not overbearing. The actress playing the mother is so fantastic she really makes this story what it is. I’m so impressed. Serious dogtooth vibes!!
Dolce Luxe thank you for this! You are bang on - the father and daughter are indeed similar in a way the mother isn't, and your interpretations are very true. This should be a top comment!

The edgy madness of mother and quiet insanity of this whole situation is sheer terror, and it is literally right up in your face silently screaming at you, and you just cannot look away. The actress who does the crazy abusive mother does a spot on job! Perfect! The clipped words, the shrill voice, and the obsession with cleanliness. Does a very good imitation of the abusive mother.

Ooooo somebody's been watching RUclips "horror story" channels. There's a law that if you put a horror story on RUclips, it MUST include the word "palpable". Without that word, the video will not be allowed to be published.
@dani cali why does it have to be one country vs the other? With 7 billion people on this planet I'm sure anyone from anywhere can come up with a harrowing horror idea. It doesn't matter where you're from. Horror is universal.
I homeschool my kids and honestly most of the other mom's sound like this woman. Science curriculum should be monitored and knowledge tested just like math and language arts.
I was homeschooled and yeah there were no exams. Luckily, I didn't need them. Now I am a Computer Science senior in uni with a gpa of 3.70 out of 4. So it worked out for me.
In my country, homeschooled kids aren't even registered. It's really sad because for kids with severe anxiety or special educational needs, homeschooling could be really useful, but it's often used by weird people like this woman, and they teach their children that schooling is bad so wrong information is passed down through generations.
I find your comment very interesting. I was homeschooled, and I met some of the craziest and most backwards family from it. There is no doubt that homeschooling certainly has some major downsides, I feel like I suffer from some issues that worsened due to being homeschooled. Now as a college student, i feel free from it all though
There are...SOOO many half-truths in what the mother is teaching. She's not an intentional liar and she loves her family...she's just a zealot and in denial. This is SUPER well written.
I know, right? She's brilliant! I hope she'll be given new opportunities to be an actress again, she was so natural and convincing! I found out she took part to another short movie ("Our Broken Heart"), and in that one she was soooo good, too! She plays a dramatic role, and she kills it! Lovely and very talented!
I said she ALSO, not BECAUSE. Her having depths and her, looking like Anne Hathaway, are 2 UNRELATED/UNRELATED observations. BTW, If you don't agree with any of those 2 DIFFERENT/UNRELATED feedback, fine :) @@littleleah310
The acting, the cinematography, the not traditional set up, it's so good and so refreshing. It's not cheap horror with jump scares, it's horror that makes you think and the best part (or actually worst), you can sort of see this sort of thing in real life.
Mom: He must be proud. It's not easy making rhymes like that. The Girl: Oh dad, you the best dad I've had. I'm glad. But you're dead and that's bad, and makes me sad.
This short was brilliant, and I love how it unfolded. There is definitely abuse going on here and my perception is that both the mother and the daughter were abused in this home by the father. I think that there was possibly violence and emotional abuse towards the mother first by her domineering husband and that when she domestically instructs her daughter and slaps her for being out of line, it is so the girl can navigate around her father and avoid more serious violence from him towards her and possibly back to the mother for not doing enough to educate her daughter "right". The mother was probably already broken when her daughter was born and appears to be obsessive compulsive and is clearly uneducated in matters of science, which is kind of funny if the situation was not so serious. The only way to get her to listen was to tape up her mouth, and as we leave her tied up in the chair, she will now be a victim of all the faulty education she has imparted in this years-long tyranny. Couldn't happen shiver a nicer person!
Why are all of you so averse to the idea of a woman (especially a white woman) being an evil, manipulative abuser? Isn't there enough evidence in the video suggesting that that is so?
hey damn that makes so much sense- i didn't even consider that. Thats why she couldn't let go of her stubborn behavior- people experiencing abuse are still often suffering the consequences even if the abuser isn't around anymore.
20:13 : “Hi” 😂😂😂😂😂 she just said Hi like nothing has happened. Lol. She is an awesome actress. ALTER u never cease to amaze me!!!! Thank u for always making videos to share to horror lovers like me❤️

Absolutely brilliant, the film oscillates in perfect balance between art and horror, creating this intelligent movie of poetic angst. And the young woman is such a genuine talented actress.
A beautifully disturbing film about two people grappling with the idea of mortality and grief, the mother with denial and the need to control and the daughter with naïvety yet curiosity and creativity.
1. 5:00If you look closely at their handwritten books You can see the following The word "spelling" is wrong Woods- super physics (Wood is botany, not physics) "Drawring" is spelled instead of drawing 2. My own theory about the "images" The whole "Imagery" is based on Plato's "allegory of the cave". The light shining in the dark represents knowledge. The urge learn. And the darkness represents ignorance, superstition etc. The "puddle scene" after the "image" represents that you are learning and escape ignorance.
One slight mistake. If he was rotten enough for flies then the fathers body would really smell the whole house out, not just when the blankets were pulled back: the flies would be the least of their concerns. Apologies if said before but otherwise a great film.

"In the woods" In the woods is where i go Whenever i am free And when i go into the woods I see the in-between We dont know how the place works But we do know that its there We all know its the door That opens here to there Because that is where there is the space That crosses in between The things we see right here And the ones we havent seen And when we all go through that place The world will turn around There foxes fly water is dry And trees are upside down The flies are in the sky And the sky is on the ground So we must keep on exploring Until the day we doubt That the way into the nightmare Is our only way out Love this so muchhh

Everyone is making smartass comments for the laughs, but I actually wanted to congratulate this short movie : it was INCREDIBLE. The lightning, aesthetic, the actor's way of playing, the theme that reminds us a little bit of ''Stranger Things'' with the whole upside down concept and this very suffocating atmosphere that we can have in ''huit clos'' type of movies. The tension in this film is palpable. It felt like it was bleeding out of my screen with every shot. The composition is gorgeous and edited well. The soundtrack really cranks it up. Really hope to see the actress who played Rachel in more things to come.
it was really well at building a world that sucked me in and i wanted to somehow see or know more from those characters
Ooooo somebody's been watching RUclips "horror story" channels. There's a law that if you put a horror story on RUclips, it MUST include the word "palpable". Without that word, the video will not be allowed to be published.
*Obsesses over things being clean*
Rachel:*crawls near dead things and bugs on the forest floor*

@dani cali why does it have to be one country vs the other? With 7 billion people on this planet I'm sure anyone from anywhere can come up with a harrowing horror idea. It doesn't matter where you're from. Horror is universal.
@dani cali u sound dumb
Yet you spelt "moms" wrong.
In my country if you are home schooled you should be registered in a normal school so teachers can come to your house and help you learn
There are...SOOO many half-truths in what the mother is teaching. She's not an intentional liar and she loves her family...she's just a zealot and in denial. This is SUPER well written.
I can't believe that the girl, Kate Reed, career didn't just rocket. She is amazing.
She has depths not all actors can reach. She also looks like Anne Hathaway ❤
@@divinearellano7019so her looks is her depth?!
Kudos to the main actress who’s out there vibing with the worms and listening to death in some creepy ass forest for the sake of our enjoyment

Excellent analysis 👌🏼
Why are all of you so averse to the idea of a woman (especially a white woman) being an evil, manipulative abuser? Isn't there enough evidence in the video suggesting that that is so?
hey damn that makes so much sense- i didn't even consider that. Thats why she couldn't let go of her stubborn behavior- people experiencing abuse are still often suffering the consequences even if the abuser isn't around anymore.

The only thing that I understood is that home education is terrific
Thank you! That means a lot :)
well it is. Think about what the hell happens when parents decide to go full woke by "teaching" their flat earth BS to their non vaccinated kid
Yeah because this is an accurate representation of home education....
I guess they should now make a horror video about governmental school education and show you how great that is, maybe something like Nazi Germany governmental school education.

But forreal, this was my first Alter short horror, and I absolutely fell in love 😩👏🏾
Mum is "complicated and dangerous" for her daughter. It's sick to want to live with a dead person.
The mother might be a victim of a supressive husband and be totally lost without his guidance, she probably really believes he will come back.
Did anyone else thought about what these guys were doing before the man died? Like was the whole family crazy? And what was that thing that was shown in dark anyway?
I wonder what context clues are, it's not like we where taught this in 8th grade English 🙄

I know people are talking about the "no one wants to rot" line, but I burst out laughing when Rachel finished vacuuming her dad with "hi"
The two actresses here both sold it amazingly, some of the best acting I've seen in a horror short.
The way they believe he will be back, is like my kids telling me they will clean their room soon .
Cuz no one wants to . Saying that from a kids heart (I'm am a kid)

Rather... incorrect, perverse, erroneous, psychopathic, horrific , sick and evil home education. Wonder what the final exam entails? What kind of school did lovely mom attend? Great job Alter. Thanks.
Absolutely brilliant, the film oscillates in perfect balance between art and horror, creating this intelligent movie of poetic angst. And the young woman is such a genuine talented actress.

1.
5:00If you look closely at their handwritten books You can see the following
The word "spelling" is wrong
Woods- super physics (Wood is botany, not physics)
"Drawring" is spelled instead of drawing
2. My own theory about the "images"
The whole "Imagery" is based on Plato's "allegory of the cave". The light shining in the dark represents knowledge. The urge learn. And the darkness represents ignorance, superstition etc.
The "puddle scene" after the "image" represents that you are learning and escape ignorance.
Sewing is also spelled Sowing
Bacteria are mammals.☺

And Rachel and moms have many bacterias on their body. Wooo..
Reply to this comment if you have a small dick
One slight mistake. If he was rotten enough for flies then the fathers body would really smell the whole house out, not just when the blankets were pulled back: the flies would be the least of their concerns. Apologies if said before but otherwise a great film.
MrCrisp yes and if there were flies there would probably be maggots which would happen after around 2-3 weeks of rotting.
MrCrisp thanks will try. 👍
He’s been taxidermied at least somewhat.
Don’t forget nose blindness will prevent them from smelling.
Mrs G No it won’t, it really won’t

It was disturbing in a beautiful way- not unsettling. The mother wasn't really a bad person- just undereducated and naive. I'm glad she wasn't that typical psychotic- violent clicheed character

In the woods is where i go
Whenever i am free
And when i go into the woods
I see the in-between
We dont know how the place works
But we do know that its there
We all know its the door
That opens here to there
Because that is where there is the space
That crosses in between
The things we see right here
And the ones we havent seen
And when we all go through that place
The world will turn around
There foxes fly water is dry
And trees are upside down
The flies are in the sky
And the sky is on the ground
So we must keep on exploring
Until the day we doubt
That the way into the nightmare
Is our only way out

Everyone is making smartass comments for the laughs, but I actually wanted to congratulate this short movie : it was INCREDIBLE.
The lightning, aesthetic, the actor's way of playing, the theme that reminds us a little bit of ''Stranger Things'' with the whole upside down concept and this very suffocating atmosphere that we can have in ''huit clos'' type of movies.
