  • Join me in learning how to melt down aluminum and cast your own fishing sinkers! I have to admit, I messed up a few until I got the hang of it.....The great part is that you can just re-melt any aluminum cast that doesn't turn out right. Just throw it right back in the forge and try again!

    Just drill a hole in a stone and superglue a swivel in there.. Easy, no melting, no fire and the same size stone would generally be heavier for the same size ally one.
    Also the pebble / stone will look totally natural to the fish.

      I am thinking about doing this else well. It's easy cheaper and less work

    I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a ruclips.net/user/postUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

    Lead melts easy and is very heavy. Alum is harder to melt and very light. You'd be better off just using steel nuts as sinkers.

      Exactly Gary..The Aluminum is to lite for a sinker...I think he should pour is into his hand first to make sure he gets the right amount before he pours it in the mold..I would like to see that. i am sure it would get a million views.. :~)

      a piece of round sandstone is the perfect sinker, or making sinkers out or concrete, its really easy to make and cheap.

      also alluminium wouldnt work for the sea (salt corrodes alluminium and alluminium alloys really fast)

    You could always add steel but in the mix to make weight heavier

    What was the cost of energy to heat the alum. to 1221 degrees? Tin cans melt at 450 deg. and it is a heavier metal. Just a thought. Plus tin would rust out if lost fishing.

    i think if you add some sort of wax to the sand (probably in a smaller jar) it'll give you cleaner blanks.

    Aluminium is way too light and the paper clip eye would rust out in 2 weeks.. use lead and brass wire for the eye...just like the shop bought ones.

    How do you heat your aluminum. How hot does it have to get. But cool deal I make the 3 oz weights like to that not many use down here. Mostly on beaches I guess I've got hundreds I made to sell nothen no one wants so I use them. But great video thumbs up from me. God bless

      I have 2 different forges now. One uses coal, and the other uses propane. I forget the temp, but aluminum has a pretty low melting point. If the forge can get steel a medium red hot, it can melt aluminum no problem.

    hey i was wondering, ive been melting aluminum for a while but i learned a while ago that aluminum is a toxic metal that is bad to breath in, but so many people are doing it anyways, am i missing something? is it really not that bad?

    • @animalmansurvivor1452

      Hi! While I am definitely no expert, my research has shown that aluminum is pretty safe. Metals that are definitely on the no-no list include: zinc, brass, galvanized steel, lead, nickel and cadmium. I have melted aluminum several times now and never had an issue. Obviously you should only do this outdoors and not stand over the forge and breath in the fumes. I think ventilation is the big key here. Happy melting!

      Here is an excerpt I've pasted in from a website concerning Brass and Copper:
      Inhalation of fumes or dusts may cause a variety
      of adverse health effects to the respiratory system, including (but not necessarily
      limited to) lesions of the mucous membrane, bronchitis, pneumonia and cancers
      of the nasal cavity and respiratory tract.

      The copper and zinc in the brass are not pure. Therefore you get a many very toxic metals from the vapors, cadmium, lead, antimony, and arsenic to name a few. These last four are very toxic and/or carcinogenic. Zinc is not very toxic, but it is not good for one to breath ANY metal fumes or dust.

    The mass of aluminum compared to lead is a bit shy of .24 so aluminum poured in a mold for a 2 oz. lead sinker would be about a half ounce. It would be a usable sinker in water without current but in moving water completely useless. With the aluminum sinker having 4 times the mass it would also be subjected to 4 times the force of a lead sinker and not likely to hold bottom at all. In addition to the current rolling it over the bottom there is also the current flowing against the fishing line. When selecting a material to make sinkers density is paramount.

    Why use one of the lighter metals for something that needs one of the heavier ones? Don't get me wrong, it's all fun trying things and experimenting. But.... what happened to simple common sense?

  • @IberianCraftsman
    @IberianCraftsman 6 лет назад +1

    i hope you dont use this in the sea (alluminium corrodes enormously with salt)

    • @lachlanoneil8938
      @lachlanoneil8938 5 лет назад

      Nope it doesn't it does corrode but aluminum oxide is harder than aluminium and it seals it self from other layers of aluminium being exposed to water.
