Hasselblad Havoc: Conquering Camera Drama for an Unforgettable Sunrise

  • I start this morning's video shooting a gorgeous sunrise at Sunset Beach, NC. Everything is going great, until I go to change lenses. My camera locks up, JUST as the light hits its peak. I am forced to switch over to digital, but am able to get set up just in time to capture some images I really love. I make the morning far more difficult than it should be, but what's life without a little bit of excitement.

I'm deeply honored and appreciative for such a kind gesture Jim. It's always been my #1 goal with my photography to make people "feel" and to know that someone across the distance is able to get what im going for is just awesome!

Thanks for the video and the link to Edgar Gallardo's work. FWIW, you have some outstanding (and inspiring) work on your web site too.

Thank you David! I’ve been slow to update the website. I have a lot to do. But I appreciate you checking it out! Happy to share Edgar’s work. No better way to learn and grow as a photographer than to expose yourself to as many different styles as possible.

Great work as always man! That image at 11:05 is really something. Well done! I used to live by the coast in SoCal and it is definitely a challenge

Thank you! I bet you miss the water too then. I had the opportunity to live in hawaii for a few years. I love Colorado but sometimes… the ocean calls me back haha

I like your images! The Hasselblad is a really complicated camera mechanism. When I was pro, it's reliability and maintenance, not for me! Agencies wanted me, to use Hassie! First I simply couldn't focus it. I used a borrowed Rolleiflex, later my own kit of Mamiyaflex C series Twin Lens. Very reliable Unlike Rollei I had various lenses, all good. Personally it's your push for film, whereas I love Digital. I'm also retired! Great series!

Thank you Jason! It’s definitely a finicky system. That’s why I usually prefer large format or digital. It’s just difficult to travel with sheet film and I really do love shooting film. I’m glad you enjoyed
The images, that means a lot!

Nice video with some great shots. I noticed when you were having issues with that lens. That you had the dark slide still installed on the back. As it wasn't installed when you removed the back. So unless you "reshot" that part for the video, it's no wonder the camera wouldn't fire.

Great eye. My film back has a film slide holder so when I’m shooting that’s where I put it. It looks like the slide is in but it’s actually behind the film. When I removed the back, the slide is in (can’t remove the back without the slide in). I did check that and I was able to get one shot before it froze up and you can see that one on the light table. I appreciate you taking a closer look though! I’m convinced it has something to do with the mirror lockup and the lens as it only freezes up when I lock the mirror.

Oof, apparently I wasn't paying attention to what I actually typed. I meant to type, "As it was installed when you removed the back". And as you said, can't remove the back without it. What a weird error.

Haha I figured that’s what you meant but just wanted to make sure. It is odd… but I’m sure it’s something I’m doing wrong haha

Beautiful work and my favorites are the 2 second exposure using the Hasselblad and last photo with the monotone blue in the sky and water. As a Hasselblad 500CM owner, I'm curious what the issue is with 250MM and body (note: I'm was thinking of getting that lens myself). Please let us know what the problem was.

Thank you. I’ll definitely follow up if I figure out the issue. The lens was just serviced so I’m not sure how it could be a lens issue, but it only seems to happen when I have this lens on.
