Hey friends! If you'd like to learn more about the species I planted and how it was all done, here's the first video - Planting a Forest in a Day ruclips.net/video/u_FKy9Wr4ds/видео.html Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year! :) Kalem
Thanks, I am in tropical North Queensland, it has become a really dry and painful to look at landscape covered by imported impossible to get rid of trees. I planted a rainforest in my back yard so only a small one. When I win lotto (?) I will do what you have done.
I was in Portugal last week and found a tree I used to have in my garden in LA - one of my favorite - and it's actually the tree you used Pittosporum. I took a few cuttings and planted them yesterday in a pot here in Serbia, hopefully it will root and I can plant it out in my forest or at least in a pot here in my garden. Another tree I had in LA is Manuka - I'd like to grow one here in Serbia but I have not seen them at all, not sure if they could survive the frost - the climate where I live is kind of like Milan in Italy. I showed your videos to my friends in Portugal - they bought a lot of land close to Porto and want to do similar thing you did in NZ. They loved your videos
Your native forest is shaping up nicely! I've been gradually converting our property here in Northern Ohio from non native plants to native ones. It's amazing how quickly native pollinators start showing up. Good stuff, Kalem! ❤
I love the Miyawaki method of planting and seeing how well you have done. Mother nature and her inhabitants thank you. I also love seeing chickens running around with lots of space, adventures, and mental stimulation. Thanks for giving them their best life. My three girls and I love your videos. You are making a bjg difference in this world. Thank you.
In case anyone like me only has a small area to grow in, planting a dense hedge of small native trees or shrubs can be a great down-sized option for city dwellers. If you start with seedlings or young saplings, many tree species can be pruned to be more like shrubs if space is a concern. Obviously it’s better to have bigger trees if you have room but you’d be amazed how much habitat you can create with trees that you keep at only a couple meters tall as long as they are allowed to flower and fruit. 😊
I remember watching you plant all of these! Its so cool to see it growing so well! I dont have the same space, but decided to plant a tomato in a pot and a little chilli plant on my balcony after watching your videos and recently had a pizza with my own tomatoes on it! I have a few more ready to go and we're going to make tomato and chilli pasta tonight!
What a beautiful native planting, and it’s looking amazing now after only 2 years. Your look of utter joy at 0:38 says it all to me 💚💚💚 Keep inspiring us and nurturing the planet!
Thanks a lot Kalem! We've just bought a little piece of grassland and you've given me some great ideas of what to do with the border and how to have a thriving ecosystem succesfully. Let's make the world a better place!
thanks for sharing. I have an area on my block which I have been umming and ahing about what to do with for a while now. Its now going to be a 100% native planting section. I had been put off planting natives as I though they were really slow growing. Well, thats clearly not the case from what I see here.
I love this so much. Do yourself a favor and curl up on the couch to watch the Man Who Planted Trees as soon as you can. This reminds me of it so much. It's my favorite short animation of all time. One man can literally change the world through trees and you're doing it. Positive thoughts and well wishes your way.
@@TheKiwiGrower I'm glad you watched it. You're doing the same sort of work and you're having a positive impact on this world. I hope you feel good about the legacy you're creating. All the best to you.
Awesome video. I live next to a park, and there is a bird sanctuary behind our property. The planting of cabbage trees, kowhai, kaka beak and many other native trees have encouraged the comeback/resurgence of tui, fantails and other native bird species into our neighbourhood (the distinct sound of the tui is refreshing). I just saw an adult and baby pukeko roaming freely in the park yesterday. Love watching your videos, like watching a tutorial giving me great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Hey! Im from Costa Rica and i really feel ya bro! Conservation of our environment is key for our future as a species! Would love to see a part of your property full of local flowering trees! ❤
I have spent 7 years planting fruit trees on a blank flood prone acre. It certainly has been challenging but now the ground is absorbing the flood waters better, the trees planted on mounds seem to be thriving too. Love your channel 😊
It’s wonderful to see what you have achieved with a days work planting trees and two years growth. Putting the “girls” hens to work is something my friend who has a farm did using bottomless cages in her garden so they didn’t eat her garden also.
Congrats on now almost being at Half a Million! Yet the most congrats is for planting these trees and having them grow into something that is actually helping all of us around the world by your inspiration. It is mid winter now here in Vermont USA but I do promise to plant come springtime.
Thank you for helping to make the world a better place with so much climate devastation, deforestation, extinctions, etc. You are my fan and congratulations 😊
Well young man Happy New Year and wow this is so precious that many of these trees I remember as a kid living out in the Countryside of Te Waipounamu, One in particular was the shrub of kawakawa which my mum prepared for us and it was our cough mixture and honestly we were healthy kids that hardly got a cold (back late 1949's 50's ) I am now 78 and just love your chanel and exposing the natural beauty of refurbishing Native Wildlife in a family plot. The loss of seeing Bumble Bees, native frogs, insects and many other types of wildlife, I can imagine what NZ would look in ten years if we all planted a Native tree or two. gorgeous I reckon. So cheers Kiwigrower love it.
I would LOVE to do this. You might want to put another chook house in that section….temporarily. Respect for the work you have done and are doing. Well done👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
I absolutely love it! My father and I are still searching for a field in the Netherlands where we can do something similar. Have you heard of the Miyawaki method? It’s a technique similar to what you're doing, but with a focus on densely planting a mix of slow- and fast-growing species to create a forest much faster than it would develop naturally.
That's awesome! Yup I've heard of that method - it seem's really effective. I guess this forest kind of similar though bringing the slow growing ones in later since they need that frost protection and shade first :). Good luck with the land searching!
Very good job, well done, I would suggest to plant some acorn trees, most animals love to eat them because they are a good source of protein & Fat, and they will improve the composition & fertilization of the soil, thank YOU 4 sharing, All the best.
This is awesome. My partner and I are in the Waikato and have always wanted to establish more native bush, when we are able to get land! It's cool to see others doing it, thank you for caring
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant the growth you achieved in two years. Love the chickens doing the work. Well done - continue your exceptional work. Cheers
Thank you very much for these videos ! I remember having so much fun watching your plantation video and I couldn’t believe that it was 2 years ago when you said it. I hope that you will always record and share your adventures so I can carry on feeling joy watching them. ❤
Nice update of the forest, it's great to see it thrive. I think it's a great initiative that you're taking by attempting to restore the habitat that may have once stood on your property. I hope it inspires others to do the same. Imagine the difference if everyone planted just a few native trees or shrubs on some spare land in their property, it may not be a lot individually, but it will all add up and improve biodiversity.
Excellent work. Greetings from far away: The Netherlands. Each winter, I plant hundreds of mostly native trees and shrubs for local wildlife (and for my own enjoyment as well). I do this on the estate of my employer. You're correct in that first you have to plant the pioneer species and later on more sensitive species can be introduced or they arrive naturally. Depending on the local circumstances, these pioneers can be willows or alders, poplars, birch, and later on nut and fruit plants will do nicely, especially when sheltered from the wind or too much sunlight. Also, the soil needs to build up organic matter and fungal presence. The species in the video are unfamiliar to me, but I see chickens are the same all over the world :)
I love to see it. It always makes me a little sad to see new Zealand so deforested. Yes, in Europe where I live there's hardly any native forest left, but new Zealand kept it's own for so long, it's a little disheartening to see. Which is why I love what you do and am happy for your education and encouragement about planting native plants and raising awareness about their great impact. Another benefit to all those you already listed is that the trees you plant will reseed in the area if possible, thus you help those plants return sooner than they may be able to naturally, if at all under current conditions. Looks like a lovely summer over there! Cheers!

This guy is living my dream
Thanks, Obama
And you've lived my dream, Mr. Obama!
Thank you, Mr. Obama. The first and the last black president.

Can’t believe it’s been 2 years! Loved seeing those chickens having the time of their life!

Clever way of thinking using the chickens to help trample the grass, plus fertilise the earth.
@@TheKillerJW Im going to have to try this trick myself
Great vidio love what yuor doing😂❤
They're the best for improving the soil.

And if you buy trees with grafted varieties, you can have an orchard in a relatively small place.
I remember watching you plant all of these! Its so cool to see it growing so well!

That's awesome - well done! So satisfying eating your own produce :). Enjoy
Wow, Kalem those trees are absolutely thriving! If more people did this it would really help local wildlife thrive.
Only on 160 acres just outside Rotorua but Bene watching your journey for quite a while now and inspired me to do something similar. Well done mate
That's awesome, hope it goes well!
Only 160 acres! That's a fair bit 😮
Love how the dogs follow you everywhere. such good helpers!
This looks like an amazing place to spend the day.
wow soo beautiful! , the forest is nice too
So awesome to see people like you doing their best to restore natives. Thanks for the hard work
What a beautiful native planting, and it’s looking amazing now after only 2 years. Your look of utter joy at 0:38 says it all to me 💚💚💚 Keep inspiring us and nurturing the planet!
Jeez. Those biceps are glorious.😊
You're one of a kind brother. Keep it up.

Wonderful Concept and makes great sense ... payout is Beautiful 😊
im proud of you for planting native. native gardening will always triumph over agricultural gardening
This is fantastic. Thank you for understanding the importance of native plants in the process of recovering the destroyed eco systems.
Good story, good cause. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you. Thank you for caring and launching this project! Thank you for being so thoughtful and proactive!

Great! Thank you for making the world a better place.
I love seeing all the shrubs that we use for landscaping here in CA in their native climate. Way to go mate.
You did a great job! Also nice analysis on what went wrong in the not quite thriving area. Lets all grow some more trees!
Looks amazing! Hope you increase this mini forest in the near future. 🦗
Wow the fact you can grow so much abundance in 2 years gives me so much hope for the planet. i hope those that own land do what you do.
All the effort was worth it 💪🏼
Thank you, this is fantastic! We’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching today.
I have spent 7 years planting fruit trees on a blank flood prone acre. It certainly has been challenging but now the ground is absorbing the flood waters better, the trees planted on mounds seem to be thriving too. Love your channel 😊

Good job my friend. I had planted trees with a small team here in my country, it's a so good feeling to see them grow.
That's awesome
Well done! Doing same here in Ireland, native plants all the way from meadows, pond to native trees. Habitat restoration is so rewarding 💚🌳🌳🌳
Looking great, inspiring 😀
