Thanks for highlighting our neck of the woods! My dad, Rev. Jim Ewing Sr., was pastor of The Free Pentecostal Church of God at Pucketts Creek for 55 years before passing away in Nov. 2020. My brother, Jimmy Jr., is pastor there now. Claude Ely, who also happened to be my 2nd cousin, preached there many times and his funeral was held there in 1978.
You're welcome and thanks so much for watching! We think a lot of those folks in Lee county they're some of the best people you could meet anywhere. Sorry to hear about the passing of your father but after 55 years in the pulpit what a reward he must have. It's wonderful that your brother is preaching there now.
I'm from Lee County Did you ever know any webbs? Rogers? Deirths? Claude Ely was my Aunt Jackie and Aunt Karen's Uncle? If I'm not mistaken, Jackie has a daughter named Kristy I'm Linda Rogers daughter named Brandye

Hey Herman, it’s your cousin Misty. Long. (Kiley’s granddaughter & Bobby’s daughter) I was just looking up some stuff about Pennington Gap & this popped up & I started watching this video. And, I’ve only been there about 30 times in my whole life but I swear I saw the church at the end and told myself that it looked like uncle Gene’s & aunt Lill’s house. Then then after I watched the video I started reading the messages & I read your message & was like wait. And I put 2 & 2 together & realized it was the church & house.
For the past 30+years, I take a yearly roadtrip from coast to coast in the United States. Always a high point in the Appalachians. Thanks for showing me another destination! I sure hope things settle down soon... A new subscriber from Canada!
Love this video my mother was a Rogers and she lived on puckets creek as children we we would go and visit my grandma Rogers for 2 wks I wish you would have turned on the road by the store it was known as Garretts and as kids we would walk down to it for candy after we got out of church. Thank you for this video brings back good memories

Thanks for all your videos. It is relaxing for me to be driving on the road with you and your wife. Enjoy you and your wife talking about the area. I am from Kentucky and I sure miss it. Live in GA now. geeorgia
I'm reading Demon Copperhead and digging the videos to get a sense of place for the book. Definitely going to visit this area when I travel to the USA. Cheers to you and your missus mate.
I just told my parents I’m taking them for a drive to 421 Market next week to get a hamburger! We may drive up the creek too. Thanks for the wonderful video and for the drive suggestion! Keep them coming. We live outside of Barbourville and my parents and I like to take drives so we’re always looking for new places to go. My Dad loves to look at the old churches and take pictures of them. I’m excited to go! That’s a place I’ve never been.
That last church on the left is the Free Pentecostal Holiness Church of Puckett's Creek...It sits on land given to it by my Dad's father...back in the 40's ..the house above it..to the right is the home of those grandparents ...then taken over by my parents after looking after them up til the mid 60's

Thanks Terry! We will definitely stop and sample the menu of little mom and pop places when we find them, sadly there's just not many of them around anymore.

Great video Coyote! I love those out of the way small country stores like that! Tell Mrs. Coyote not to feel bad, I've been on a diet too! I've lost 75 pounds on the keto diet since last February! I still eat hamburgers, just not the bun.😀 thanks for the adventure!
On the Pucketts Creek side, y'all mentioned it in the video, Baltic Dr, there was 4 miners that died in a roof collapse/ rib roll in Feb 1991. It's at the end of the holler. The entrance has since been sealed off & the surrounding land reclaimed & turned into a nature preserve.
When I was younger, a baby copperhead tried to follow me into the 421 market. Thankfully my Dad has better eyes than I did.😳😅 My Mamaw and Papaw, and my great uncle live on Pucketts creek. The other great uncle lives on the Ely’s creek side. And it looks like my Mamaw and Papaw were at church lol.😊

I actually grew up in the house beside the chuch pine grove, its really a cinder block house. my mom got tired of seeing white all the time and painted it to look like a cabin, the house was actually used to belong to the church and was used as a parsonage
I was told by a retired Lee county sheriff deputy why they didn’t move into the new building, but I forgot 😂. And I still don’t know how that old building has held on as long as it has, and not slid into the creek

Having said that , can you please provide any links, ideas, or organizations that are actively looking for donations or help in saving these historic buildings and put them in your videos ? Hey coyote iam in bluefield, I was bored to tears so tomorrow I will head down to 421, cause up on this end everyone is on 420, they are woofing gasoline, at least I get a good burger 🍔.
The little mom and pop places have the best food...I guess they use actual hamburger and fresh vegetables, not mystery meat. I used to go along 421 to my grandparents house in Clay county, but seldom past Manchester. Back when tobacco farming was a thing, those little mom and pop places would be packed around lunchtime, and a lot of places had cold sandwiches, and snack stuff, even if they didn't have a grill. I prefer to stop at those little stores...to help the little guy out, and they have better stuff.
We went to the 421 market about 2 mos ago they have great food. We asked why they haven't moved to the new building and she told us someone stripped the wiring out of the new building😥
Have to say the hamburgers at the 421 market are among the top three hamburgers we've had the other ones being at the rail house grill in Putney Kentucky And the grippo burger at the verda quick stop in Evarts Kentucky
