Yvan, can I add “a sense of humour” to that list. It’s essential to have one of those, not just in business but life in general.

The first thing I did when I started my business was buy insurance. I have a tailored policy that includes Garage Keepers and covers the customer property, my building, all equipment & fixtures, and a radius for when I am driving a customer's vehicle in the event I need to pick up or drop off. One of the 10 things I think a detailer must have is to KNOW WHAT YOUR TIME IS WORTH AND YOUR VALUE.

Great info again. Going from a collision repair career for nearly 40 years, I can attest these are all true. Don't try to do or be everything in your business. You're a business owner that knows detailing. It's much harder being a detailer trying to run business.

I would add: Keep you're family in the loop. Recently my wife took an interest in learning at least a little about my plans for my detailing side hustle. Keeping them in the loop of the business would and could be beneficial when it comes to positive involvement and business brainstorming. We can't always come up with good ideas on our own and having them could help improve

Do you have suggestions on making a business plan. I've tried to do it in the past, but I've gotten to a road block in the financials part. I feel like it's asking you to look into some crystal ball to come up with how much revenue you will bring in. I don't want to necessarily just pull something out of my rear end, but I have to make some sort of projection.

I struggle with the idea of whether or not I want to try to grow to the point where I need employees. There's a part of me who knows I'm not a good leader per se and don't want to create a potentially toxic environment possibly turning off some great people off to detailing and business ownership. My main goal at this point is to get enough revenue to allow my wife to quit her job so she can help manage the business and I can do the main direct work and maybe build a nice shop in the process.

@@Detailers-Business-Academy Doing this as a side job, before I started was understanding the business first as an enthusiast besides practicing a lot not necessarily on speed but in quality and always have a checklist on what to do. I educated myself doing things in my own vehicles. You know the processes and procedures besides use of different products and approaches. Still learning since I don't do this full time, wanted to invest in getting properly trained and certified but covid-19 hit. Working at a bank and with my business education from the university, I have a small liability insurance since I don't store vehicles and I take small to medium sized cars. Also, worked on a contract with one of my friends who happens to be a lawyer for the type of services provided and costs and an inspection sheet and a notes section which highlights customer request; you know what they are more likely to see clean or catches their eyes the most. Sometimes, customers wanted jobs to be divided on engine only one day, interiors another day and exterior another day, but I always perform a basic wash of their vehicle with ONR which always is a great product and apply Bead Maker and allows me to get them coming back and I save on water a lot and customer love it.😉👌
How I started? The story is a bit odd.
One of my neighbors who was way older than me but was a vehicles enthusiast and retired as an engineer. Whenever I detailed my vehicles, he came out and watched whatever I was doing and we always had a conversation while I was doing my thing, and instead of me being annoyed by his interruptions I find it amusing because he was like keeping me in check, somehow resembles my programming and technology job. He also came out to wash his BMW M3 and his wife's Lexus, sometimes I helped him out and had long conversations about anything. He was like me, he never had alcohol or smoked in his life. We had many things in common(besides had 3 kids and grandchildren, me just 4 sons young aged and a mathematical background) and became very good friends. One day, he asked me if I could help him out with his engine bay because he liked what I did and how careful I was but he had a back pain; of course I did it all. Days later he had a heart attack. We didn't know about that but after weeks of not seeing him I thought they were on vacations traveling. One day, I saw his wife coming out receiving relatives and I asked about him and then she told me. So, that weekend I went with my oldest son and we did their front yard. Also, did the outside of their Lexus which was in the drive way. One of their sons came home and asked me if that was me who did it all and were very thankful. I told him I did it because I knew they were not in good health and their children and grandchildren lived in the states so just wanted to help out and teach my children about service and kindness. I ended up helping his 2 sons with painting the outside of their house and I detailed his cars just like I did with mine; something for him not to worry about since he knew I would take very good care of them and it was free 😉🤑. Several months later he referred me to some of his friends who were doctors, lawyers, engineers, cleaning services company owners, etc. and I was overwhelmed. I told them I couldn't do it because I was not a professional besides I didn't have insurance, you know it was a big responsibility doing that to take upon myself when your behind is not covered🤦🏽‍♂️. So one of his lawyer friends helped me out with a some sort of a contract waiver(freeing me from any claims of being sued since they knew I had no insurance or being a registered as a professional) but he insisted as well as the other 6 on me doing their vehicles because they liked what they saw on my neighbor's vehicles.
