I feel like there is a common idea that floats around the PC community. Basically buy the highest end components and it will last a really long time. The way I see it. Buy an i5 for less than half the price and a 3060 and you can upgrade twice as much. It’s way more fun that way. It’s cool to have a 3090ti and i9 but that will wear off. It will last you 4-5 gpu cycles but I feel like it is more fun to upgrade every 2 cycles and just buy the low/mid tier stuff
Funny that you say that because I literally have a i5 12400 and a RX 6600 XT. I definitely agree with you especially since you can play 95% of games with good settings on just mid end hardware. Buying the best of the best doesn't make sense for most people as there will always be new and improved hardware, plus you lose out on the feeling of upgrading your PC.
That makes sense for a casual player but for a competitive player or a streamer or a graphic designer, using high end components is a must because they need every extra fps and performance.
This is true. It's also leaves room for components dying/wearing out and being able to replace them much easier... Or God forbid you fry them. That said, it's hard to resist the new sexy stuff
I got myself a SeaSonic titanium-rated 1000W PSU in 2019 for a new build containing a 9900K + 2080 Ti. It was certainly overkill at the time and I don’t quite remember why I bought it, but I’m lucky that I did because I just bought a 3090 Ti and don’t have to upgrade any other component in my PC. I guess the term to use in my case would be, “headroom.” I got a PSU with some headroom that was able to handle a future upgrade.
IMHO the power supply is one of the best components to go overkill on, a high end 750w as an example will last multiple builds and maintain a higher efficiency than a current mid tier unit and likely come with a 10+ year warranty. They don't draw more power, they are more efficient at different areas of the curve.
I've just finished my second build & decided to go higher end than my last build which was 4yrs ago (i5 7600k, msi z270 MBoard, 500GB Samsung M.2, 16GB 3000mhz, Corsair Vengeance & GTX 1050ti), although a pretty low end build 4yrs ago I was happy with it as it was my first build & I could probably got a few more years out of it for the games I play, shooters, Elite etc. I decided to go higher end this time though with an msi z690 Tomahawk ddr4 WiFi MBoard, i7 12700k, 64GB Patriot Viper Steel 3600mhz, 4 x 2TB Samsung m.2 & RTX 3070ti , in a Be Quiet Dark Base Pro 900 rev 2. I'll also be populating 5 HDD bays with 4TB HDD & the 2 SATA bays with 2TB SATA drives depending on funds , giving 32TB of total storage. As well as wanting to play the latest titles at ultra 1440p I also do Astrophotography, the image processing software I use (PixInsight & bits of Photoshop) is very CPU heavy & benefits from a lot of RAM, also the exposures I take can take up a massive amount of storage with images sizes regularly exceeding 50GB. So I haven't really built this with future proofing in mind although it will be up to date for a fair while. Its main purpose is for the photography side of things in which case it should last me a fairly long time. But, theres always something new just around the corner 🙄
Looking back on this now, the situation with Intel and Ryzen CPU's was just flipped lol. Instead of AMD switching sockets, it was Intel who is now switching off of 1700. Ryzen will be AM5 for a few more years, which is why I'll buy a Ryzen 5 7600x for my new build, then upgrade to a Ryzen 7 two years down the line.
Thanks a lot for this video. I'm lost in terms of upgrading my PC after using it for over 5 years. Only have two choices, waiting for AMD 7000 or going for Intel 12th gen. I don't know if it's a good question, but can b660 last for 5 years? lol I just work with Ms. office, multitask like listening to music while opening 5-10 chrome tabs, and online gaming like Valorant and Genshin. Once again, huge thanks for opening my eyes, lol.
Get the newer socket motherboards. It’ll make it cheaper to upgrade in the future. For your use, you’ll be fine. That’s very low demanding use on a pc. I’m using all 2017 components and this will last me another few years until it breaks doing what you’re doing.
I just did this but I feel I did it right… upgraded a mid size Corsair Case to a Corsair icue 7000x RGB, Corsair ICUE H150i Elite LCD, Corsair RM1000x 80 plus PSU, along with a 3 pack Corsair ICUE SP120 RGB Elite. Added a 1 TB 870 EVO SSD SAMSUNG. ROG STRIX Z390-H mobo, old PSU from Corsair was an 850 from 8-9 years ago, intel i7-9700, EVGA SUPER XC Ultra RTX 2080 SUPER 8GB, and some decent RAM….. upgrading those 3 items eventually
Wear and tear is my concern when future proofing high end pc. So i go mid tier instead. At least if gpu fails or I want new games I could just upgrade it
My SFF case means i'm stuck with a 1650(G6). But then, upgrading the cpu is an option... if boards and processors were cheaper. A rough estimate for a 12th gen mobo+cpu is SGD250, I can buy a custom build 10100 at base specs(8GB RAM,128G SSD) at $540(which I have). The same specs for a 12100 would cost be at least $150 more. I don't build my own pc so the prices I'm quoting are from custom builders
I will also get a spare mobo or two (same as the one in my PC), coz the humidity has been repeatedly killing my mobos in 3 to 4 years of use while the CPU soldiers on past its 10 years of life. Will be hard to find the exact mobo 10 years down the line.

Just look up for "PSU calculator" and you can add any components you want. That's how I learned I could get away with a 450W PSU atm even after I did my CPU upgrade (I still own a GTX 950). My previous PSU fried when PC parts were at a high price after all.
Hi, I hope you can help me to decide to build my first computer. I would like to build a PC for editing, and streaming as well. I would love to go with rxt 3080ti but due to some issue with my budget. i will go with 3070 ti. how big is the difference when it comes to performance of 3080ti and 3070ti. thank you.
I disagree if for exemple you need 500w taking a 750w psu is worth it because when you'll upgrade the GPU in 2 years you would probably be able to keep the 750w one...
