After being held back in grade school, I turned 19 in high school. There were definitely opportunities for someone to be a bit too old for high school and still be there. Great movie. Great reaction. Book was so much better.
David Howell My brother-in-law is a gym teacher. One school he taught in had students in their late 20s in Junior High. Apparently they would get money from the government to go back to school, then attend just long enough to get the payment and drop out. Then they did the same thing next year, and the next, and so on.
She's a 1958 Plymouth Fury; and the red is supposedly a custom (not normally available) color. Hope Carly is doing okay. This scene was recreated for a Car Insurance ad here in Australia and, at the end, I was just waiting for the newly repaired car to run the guy down 😆.
I was an extra in the movie. I was part of crowd in the stands. The stands in the background of Paramedics treating Dennis on field. My car was the yellow one (1973 Mercury Capri V6 2600) in the high school parking lot. The scene was between Arnie &;the police detective. The film needed pre-1978 cars and was paid a little more. Car colors not allowed were white, silver and a couple other colors. Great reaction Cassie. I didn't expect Christine to be shown. When you were to do the movie. I jumped at chance to watch it. Also I know one of the outdoor film locations. High school parking lot. (Arnie & the Detective) Van Nuys Senior High School, CA. The football game was either Saugus Or Agoura High School. I forgot.
I was an extra with Central Casting in Burbank all through the 1990s. And yes, directors do not like certain colors for cars. You always hear them say "no red, white, or black". These are the most common colors for cars. You dont want 15 cars in a shot and only 3 colors are represented.

Christine was a 1958 Plymouth Fury with a major attitude. I was alive in 1978. Unlike 2023 there wasn't a video camera on every storefront back then so there were no closed circuit videotapes of virtually every human activity as there are now. I love your reviews as well as how you refrain from cursing when you become agitated. "FRICK!" That really cracked me up. I could relate as I'm a retired secondary science teacher who had to censor himself while at school. I also tried to restrain my language when at home so I wouldn't slip at school.

This film really showcases Carpenter's talent. He successfully made Christine an actual character in the story, with her own personaity, motives and desires. She's definitely a contender for sexiest villainess put on film.

He makes the haunted car just as stupid as it sounds. Carpenter giving no origin for the car and making it all about how Arnie is seduced is what makes the movie so good. If he stuck too close to the book it would be too dumb to be spooky)
In the book Christine could only repair herself if she was moving. After she got trashed and couldn't run anymore, Arnie threw his back out pushing her around in circles in the garage until she repaired herself enough to run again.

One of the biggest differences between the book and movie was the ending having Arnie in Christine for the final fight. BOOK SPOILERS The book does a better job explaining the possession of Arnie and his strive for freedom. In Christine's final moments before getting crushed, Lebay's soul leaves Christine to find Arnie. Arnie's mom was driving him away so literally "distance" himself from the car. As Arnie felt Lebay try to possess him again, he jerks the wheel from his mother and crashes. Arnie unfortunately kills his mother and self, but he managed to die free from Lebay's corruption.
Fun fact: John Stockwell, who plays Dennis, was also Cougar from Top Gun and his niece is Florence Welch, famous singer/songwriter of the group Florence and the Machine.
1958 Plymouth Fury. My uncle's first car was a 58 Fury he bought brand new in October 57 and he still has it to this day, in pristine condition. It's currently valued at $190,000. He has had offers for it over the last decade+ for $200,000-$300,000, but refuses all offers.
Cool.. but your uncle is lying to you. Sorry to kill a good story with facts, but the actual movie car sold for $275,000. A '58 Fury is worth about $70K max in great condition. Which is still huge increase in value.
John Carpenter is the master of making a low budget movie seem like it was made for 10x what it actually was. The burning car sequence never ceases to impress me. The stunt man had to wear the full burn suit and use his own oxygen tank because the flames consumed all the air inside the vehicle. My favorite part of this movie was not the car, but the complex and evolving relationship between the main character and his best friend that turns demented by the car, their interactions are really good personal drama in an otherwise horror action movie.
Christine was definitely not a low budget movie. It cost $10 million which was a fairly high budget for the time. (By comparison, The Thing cost $15 million. Halloween cost about $300,000.) I’m going to guess most of the budget of Christine went toward the numerous Plymouth Furys that were used in the film.
In Escape From New York, the scene where Snake PIissken (Kurt Russell) is flying over the city looking through special "VR/Night Vision", that effect was created using a large model table comprising of spray painted styrofoam rectangles posing as buildings with their corners and edges covered in 3M Scotchlite tape. The effect was made by a young Hollywood newcomer named.. James Cameron.
At the gas station, you asked if there would be video tapes. Cassie, this was set in 1978. Only tape players/recorders would be thousands of dollars then. You have to remember, VCRs only became widely used in homes in the mid '80s.
1958 Plymouth Fury. My dad had one when he was a kid. Sold it for like, $500 before he enlisted into the Marines. Now days you can't find that car for anything less than $100k. Sigh...
Just one week after I bought my first car ('84 Ford Escort) my neighbor put his good-running '58 Plymouth Belvedere up for sale for $100 less than I had just paid. There was no way I could have known, it would have cost a fortune to maintain, but I have never regretted anything so much as that missed opportunity
Just watched this video for the first time. I actually recommended Christine at the start of October. The car Christine is a 1958 Plymouth Fury, chosen by Steven King as it was a Forgotten car at the time. In the 1950s, the Chevrolet Bel Air and Big finned Cadillacs ruled the roads and the Plymouth Fury was only available in the gold and white trim. Christine is the only one painted in 'Autumn Red' and white because she was considered a 'Special Order' by Rolan LeBay. 24 Plymouth Furys were used for the film and only 2 Survived and are in private collections to this day. Oh, and the scene where Christine "repairs" herself was done with hydraulics to suck to the car into itself and the footage was just played in reverse.

Keith Gordon who played Arnie is an amazing actor, who went on to do some really phenomenal directing later in his life. Genuinely one of the coolest people in Hollywood.
He also appeared in Dressed to Kill and Jaws 2 around this time. He was kind of like PJ Soles, who you'd see in everything for a short time and who then kind of faded from view.
I worked on the editorial staff on a film Keith Gordon directed called “Waking the Dead” in 1999. He was a great guy, easy to work with and excellent at his job. He’s one of the good guys in the industry.
Here's one of my favorite pieces of movie trivia: Christine Belford, who plays Arnold's mom, once lived in the house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. Yeah, _that_ house.
I think you were right about Artie seeming nice again when he came back and found out the guy died in the car. I think it was because he spent a night away from Christine. So that also supports your idea that if the car was destroyed he'd become himself again.
Little known fact, Alexandra Paul (who played Leigh) has a twin sister and decided to play a prank on Carpenter. In the scenes at the end when they fight Christine, they sneakily put her in the same clothes and had her sat in the bulldozer with Dennis, apparently Carpenter didn't notice at first but knew something was off until they came clean.
The kid who played Arnie directed a movie called The Chocolate War and I was an extra in the film - literally a face in the crowd - and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and as the camera zoomed in on one of the main characters I am right there! So with my family I got to see myself on the big screen in a theatre! I can see why actors can get so sucked in, seeing yourself on that huge screen and knowing a whole world of people are seeing you makes you feel unique and special even though it really means nothing at all. I felt that even as just a nobody in the crowd.
John Carpenter is mainly known for horror movies (which are among some of the best ever), but he also made a mainstream movie you would probably love, a sci-fi romance movie called Starman with Jeff Bridges (Big Lebowski) and Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark). It’s about an alien stranded on Earth that takes the form of a woman’s dead husband and she takes him across country to meet up with a rescue ship. It’s sort of an ET for grownups. You should definitely watch it.
I always considered Christine a love story rather than a horror story. Arnie and Christine brought each other back from the dead and loved each other too much for the rest of the world
I want to see a badass remake of Christine where another owner finds her, reformed but forgotten and decaying and supes her up with a new motor, wheels, suspension, neighborhood rattling speakers and subwoofers, the works
John Carpenter is as memorable as a filmmaker as he is a composer. He writes his own music and Christine's theme is certainly one of his best. More rhythmic variations exist on RUclips and are really catchy and are a real homage to the sound of the 80s.
I was in High School with a guy that looked just like Buddy Repperton, He would buy beer at 17, Our battles in shop class were epic. He went by the name "Choppy" He spent 7 years in High school.
This is one of my favourite horror movies. And the good ones CAN be done without all of the blood and gore. Keith Gordon was absolutely fantastic as Arnie. He played BOTH roles to perfection. Cheers from Canada!

I don't understand what I said that was so offense - and why you're being so insulting.
The book was so good. Dennis was the narrator of the first part the second part switches to third person. And then the third Dennis takes over the story again. The book is incredibly sad, and nostalgic. Especially as Arnie deteriorates. The book came out when I was in High School I loved it.
You’re absolutely right about the book. I typically don’t care for King’s work, but _Christine_ is nearly perfect. He really found his stride with it in a way that I’ve never known him to duplicate.
@@darthtrip7188 I guess that’s probably the difference between a King fan vs a non-fan. Admittedly, I’m no literary connoisseur-simple though they are, I did enjoy a couple of the Bachman books. Beyond that, though, I’ve never found much of his work to be remarkable. _Christine_ is the one standout exception, though. I’ve never understood why it resonated so deeply stood with me; it’s possible that it’s because I was 13 or 14 when I first read it, having already caught _most_ of the movie on cable _once._ It was right around this time that I had developed both an appreciation for classic cars _and_ a seething resentment for my peers and a number of other people in my daily life. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t interpret Arnie’s changing as a _decline,_ but rather as an _escape._ Beyond sentimentality, though, I also just recall the narrative "flow" of the book to be unique. Through the admittedly modest exposure I’ve had to King’s printed work (including as Bachman), I’ve never found others that measured up. Incidentally, regarding the movie: it feels weird to say this, but even though I know Arnie is being corrupted (rather than possessed), I think that if ever I was to become the bad guy, that’s how I’d want it to go down.
If you're not a King fan I would recommend Different Seasons. I think its one of his best collections. Stand By Me and Shawshank. Both come from that books.
My sister's name is Kristine and in 1987, she married a man named Wayne, so I sent them got videos of "Christine" and "Wayne's World" for Christmas. They loved it.
Growing up (I was born in 77) there were three movies I could watch over and over and never get bored of watching. Christine, Halloween and Dawn Of The Dead (1978 version, obviously).
This movie is a masterclass in direction, score, timing, and character development. Stephen King knows the only way to engage the audience is putting humans first. Human emotion, human strength, and human frailty. The supernatural elements are the fulcrum around which the story revolves. Brilliant film and great reaction as always
The movie is much different than the book. The movie completely misses the fraying of the lifelong friendship of Arnie and Dennis and the 'evil' of the car's genesis which is the never-ending fury of the original owner whose mother said a demon had played a trick on her and switched him out (changeling) as a baby. The death of the daughter in the car served as a sacrifice.
@@ujohnlynch2341 The fraying of the friendship is portrayed in the movie, so I don't know what you mean there. The idea of Arnie having a romance of sorts with Christine wouldn't play right in the movie if we thought it was possessed by the dead male owner. I would prefer if there was some explanation why it was possessed though, like by a woman who might've been murdered in it.
Yet another classic from John Carpenter, along with Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Escape From New York, Starman, and Big Trouble In Little China. This is one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel ever.
I forget the actor's name, but the old guy running the garage is one of the best grumpy old farts in movie history. He also ran the campground in *The Great Outdoors.*

The book Christine was part of what you call the second phase of Stephen King's career as a writer. The first phase he wrote with a lot of literary ambition and published several heavyweight novels that are among the most frightening ever written, but also elevated horror fiction into the limelight. The second phase his books were a lot less "serious" and more fun, and spawned a number of campy, spooky classics like Cujo, Firestarter, and Christine. The movie Christine revived John Carpenter's career as a filmmaker. Everybody from critics to studios to audiences hated him after The Thing, which was universally reviled. He was fired from jobs and more or less blacklisted. The only film he could get was Christine, so he took it. And, of course, critical evaluation of The Thing has shifted considerably in the intervening decades and it is now also considered a classic. For what it's worth, Christine is one of the rare examples where the movie is better than the book. The book is much darker. It's also structured strangely, going from first person to third and back to first. The movie slims it down and simplifies things and makes it more fun. The car is a 1958 Plymouth Fury (or Belvedere, which was a different trim level of the same car). Carpenter destroyed so many of them during production that there are very few left in existence. They're real collector's items among car and horror movie enthusiasts.
@@shag139 Absolutely nothing. It's one of the best horror movies with regards to why practical special effects will always be superior to cgi. It just had the bad luck of being released right after E.T., when people only wanted friendly aliens and refused to accept anything else.
OMG. I laughed my butt off at 26:14 when you said, "There's going to be video tapes of this is there not." Helped remind me just how old I'm getting compared to people like you. When this movie was made, video tapes were just starting to hit the scene, and the movie was set a few years before that. The first time I remember even hearing of a VCR was at a friend's birthday in 1983. The parents of probably the richest kid in school got one and we all saw it at his 12th birthday party. It was a sleepover, and his mom had rented a couple of movies from the brand new video rental store. Think we watched Rocky 3 about four times that night. They also had one of those Soda Stream machines (don't know if they were called that back then) where you can make your own carbonated beverages. Think I drank about 14 Pepsi's that night too. It was a few more years before many gas stations started installing security cameras. There were a few businesses that were early adopters of the technology, but it was probably closer to 1990 before they were in every gas station.
Awesome to hear. I remember in the early 80s, very few kids in primary school had VCRs. I didn't and I was probably a bit envious of the ones that did. The VCR seemed like the best thing ever. Yea they certainly weren't common back then. I remember being invited to someone's house and seeing Xanadu and Alien on video tape. It was probably about the mid 80s when we got our own VCR.
@@anzaeria I am pretty sure we got our VCR in 1984. Immediately started using it constantly to record stuff off TV and rent movies. We never had HBO, but that was how the "richer" kids were watching movies at home before that.

I Love this film.... One reason why I like It, is that it's So Different from the book. They can actually be taken as two totally different versions of the same story, as A Lot was watered down or changed for the film. The car repair scene was a one time filming, of a car being crushed and then played backwards. Stephen King chose the car as it was never a popular model with the hot rodders, or custom guys, so they disappeared into obscurity. They also cast unknown actors so no major names overshadowed the storyline, and this made the characters more relatable.
I was in high school when Christine came out. I really enjoyed it. John Carpenter is very good at building the suspense starting with a slow crawl, and hitting a crescendo later.
Not only is this a great Carpenter/King collab, but this movie also had Brett from Alien, Peter Venkman's test subject with the bubblegum he kept electrocuting in Ghostbusters, and Kevin McCallister's old neighbor from Home Alone.
Haha, I just saw this movie for the first time, and was staring at the Ghostbusters guy trying to tell if that's who it was. When he turned around in the car with his mouth gaped, that's when I was sure of it.
Christine was the first movie that my mother, brother, and sister worked on as extras. I dunno why I didn't get to work on it, too. but, of course, in my 40-plus years in the bidness, I never get to work on something cool or something I'd watch.
In high school the teacher said Friday we'll be watching 'Christine'. Awesome! Friday rolled around and she pops in 'Christy.' It's about a young teacher in early 1900s Tennessee... I don't know why for even 1/2 a second I thought my 70 year old home economics teacher would be playing a badass horror movie. One of my dumber moments.
I once snuck in late to my creative writing class and saw "Write to Jesus" on the chalkboard. Had NO CLUE this Jesus (Hay-soos) was the 12 year old new class pen-pal in southern Mexico our teacher had just talked about. Found out from a former classmate who has taught there for 20+ years that old bat says "Don't pull a Daniel" to this day.
I remember an episode from Garfield and Friends where they did a spoof of this movie. The car had an actual voice and stalked John around in a hilarious manner. I'd suggest watching that episode on your own time, gives a good giggle and it's called "Rolling Romance".
This is one of my favourite Stephen King stories, love the idea of a possessed car, love the idea of the milometer going backwards. Once got a call from my insurance company saying I was reported for causing a crash. But I was at work all that day with the car in our compound , the guys at work started calling my car Christine . Who's a good car ,who's a pretty car yes you are. I'm not taking any chances.
Roseanne is played by Kelly Preston, the former Mrs. John Travolta. And Dennis is played by John Stockwell where you last saw him in "Top Gun". You might also recognize the old guy who Christine to Arnie. He's that sweet old man with the snow shovel who helped Kevin in "Home Alone"

Christine was a 1958 Plymouth Fury (Though some Belvederes were used) She came with a 5.7 liter, 350 Cubic Inch Golden Commando, with 305 hp two 4-barrel carburetors. Extra fact. The Plymouth Fury did not come in red. She only came in one colour (not including trim), beige.
@@gail11 Its very hard to order a special colour for a car that has limited options. This usually only happens if one of the factory big wigs wants one custom for themselves, or someone really close to them orders it through them.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions Um... "back in the day", that was not all that uncommon to special order custom colors. I saw a Chevrolet Camaro that was special ordered from the factory in "plum crazy" which was a Dodge color. The factory actually went and got some of the Dodge color and painted the Chevy and the color identification tag under the hood said "other" Two tone colors were very popular back in the day, and you could have the paint job done in special schemes. I don't think these custom paint jobs are really possible now, and I don't even know if you can custom order anything on a car now. But way back when a LOT of people ordered car instead of buying them already made of of the lot.
I had totally forgotten that Kelly Preston was in this. Fun, but so sad she’s gone. Obviously this a Stephen King story that requires extreme suspension of disbelief, but John Carpenter was the right man for the job. A stylish and entertaining thriller despite being absolutely ridiculous. Dennis is indeed, a good, good friend. 😊

i highly recommend the book. the eerie atmosphere, the horror of it really comes alive in the book. In the book the last time Dennis and Arnie ride together in the car especially is really creepy because the whole appearance of the surroundings changed, Arnie changed, there hung a terrible smell of decay. Its masterly written.
This film is supposed to have taken place in 1978. To put car prices in perspective for you, you could buy a brand new Mustang in 1978 for $4,000 dollars, so $250 was a decent amount back then for a 20 year old used car that had been sitting in a yard collecting dust. Regarding the actors, oddly enough, Buddy was only 23 when this was filmed in April of 1983. John Stockwell, who played Dennis, and Keith Gordan, who played Arnie, were 22, so basically the same age. The hot girl, who played Leigh, Alexandra Paul, was later on Baywatch and on Melrose Place. Keith was also in Back to school with Rodney Dangerfield before becoming a director. You should put Back to School on one of your comedy polls.

In the novel you find out what's behind Christine's power as things start to escalate. I think I like how they made the car just plain evil by itself in the movie.
It's also a lot smarter than people who haven't seen it expect it to be. Yes the practical effects are amazing, but I would argue that it's also the best exploration of paranoia and distrust ever on film.
“It felt fun, which is weird to say because it’s a bunch of people getting killed” I think most horror fans can relate to getting into the genre and having these thoughts at first. It’s often a misunderstood genre of movies where the audience can be confused for sadists or weirdos, but I always think about the roller coaster analogy: It’s a fun amusement park experience that many people love, but at the end of the day, it’s just an adrenaline rush because you’re tricking your body and your brain that you’re about to die. Glad you liked the movie! Stephen King really knows how to write young characters coming of age.

Read this book when I was a kid, it ended differently. Artie lives after Christine is destroyed, but then he and his mom go on a road trip and get killed in an accident. A truck driver who witnessed the accident swore that he clearly saw an older man in the car fighting with Arties mom for the steering wheel, but no such person was in the wreckage or anywhere. It was a genius ending I thought. The man in the car was supposedly the ghost of the guy who owned Christine before Artie.
Arnie's character had more of a transformation as well. The movie is good but if you read the book it's a little bit of a letdown. Believe it or not I think this movie could be remade closer to the book with today's film making.

As it was one of the first movies I remember watching as a child on H.B.O., it'll always have some nostalgia. I read the book once in 2009, and again this year when I heard of a BlumHouse remake happening. If they stay true to the novel, and do a light touch of John Carpenters vision, this could be an ABSOLUTELY CLEAN remake down for us horror nuts
Hollywood frequent changes plots when they turn books into movies. For Fried Green Tomatoes, they made Idge and Jessica Tandy's character the Same person.

There have been a lot of killer car movies throughout the years. First one that I can remember was "The Car"(1977) starring James Brolin.(more of a possessed car movie, like Christine.) Duel(1971) directed by Steven Spielberg, a man being pursued and terrorized by the malevolent driver on the road. Or the B-movie called The Wraith(1986), starring Charlie Sheen, where a special car and it's driver go after a gang of bad guys.

David Howell My brother-in-law is a gym teacher. One school he taught in had students in their late 20s in Junior High. Apparently they would get money from the government to go back to school, then attend just long enough to get the payment and drop out. Then they did the same thing next year, and the next, and so on.

I remember watching this movie with my dad.... he's always been a GM guy, but he was on the verge of tears when they destroyed all the cars for it.
The scene in which Christine re-constructs herself is one of the most haunting, disturbing scenes I've ever watched, and I'm nearly 60!

I was an extra in the movie. I was part of crowd in the stands. The stands in the background of Paramedics treating Dennis on field. My car was the yellow one (1973 Mercury Capri V6 2600) in the high school parking lot. The scene was between Arnie &;the police detective. The film needed pre-1978 cars and was paid a little more. Car colors not allowed were white, silver and a couple other colors. Great reaction Cassie. I didn't expect Christine to be shown. When you were to do the movie. I jumped at chance to watch it. Also I know one of the outdoor film locations. High school parking lot. (Arnie & the Detective) Van Nuys Senior High School, CA. The football game was either Saugus Or Agoura High School. I forgot.

I was an extra with Central Casting in Burbank all through the 1990s. And yes, directors do not like certain colors for cars. You always hear them say "no red, white, or black". These are the most common colors for cars. You dont want 15 cars in a shot and only 3 colors are represented.

Christine was a 1958 Plymouth Fury with a major attitude. I was alive in 1978. Unlike 2023 there wasn't a video camera on every storefront back then so there were no closed circuit videotapes of virtually every human activity as there are now.

This film really showcases Carpenter's talent. He successfully made Christine an actual character in the story, with her own personaity, motives and desires. She's definitely a contender for sexiest villainess put on film.

In the book Christine could only repair herself if she was moving. After she got trashed and couldn't run anymore, Arnie threw his back out pushing her around in circles in the garage until she repaired herself enough to run again.
You could take point into the ending maybe something was moving just slightly or the radio trying to kick on

One of the biggest differences between the book and movie was the ending having Arnie in Christine for the final fight.
BOOK SPOILERS
The book does a better job explaining the possession of Arnie and his strive for freedom. In Christine's final moments before getting crushed, Lebay's soul leaves Christine to find Arnie. Arnie's mom was driving him away so literally "distance" himself from the car. As Arnie felt Lebay try to possess him again, he jerks the wheel from his mother and crashes. Arnie unfortunately kills his mother and self, but he managed to die free from Lebay's corruption.
Fun fact: John Stockwell, who plays Dennis, was also Cougar from Top Gun and his niece is Florence Welch, famous singer/songwriter of the group Florence and the Machine.

1958 Plymouth Fury. My uncle's first car was a 58 Fury he bought brand new in October 57 and he still has it to this day, in pristine condition. It's currently valued at $190,000. He has had offers for it over the last decade+ for $200,000-$300,000, but refuses all offers.

He's probably afraid his car would hunt him down if he sold it.

John Carpenter is the master of making a low budget movie seem like it was made for 10x what it actually was.
The burning car sequence never ceases to impress me. The stunt man had to wear the full burn suit and use his own oxygen tank because the flames consumed all the air inside the vehicle.
My favorite part of this movie was not the car, but the complex and evolving relationship between the main character and his best friend that turns demented by the car, their interactions are really good personal drama in an otherwise horror action movie.
Christine was definitely not a low budget movie. It cost $10 million which was a fairly high budget for the time. (By comparison, The Thing cost $15 million. Halloween cost about $300,000.) I’m going to guess most of the budget of Christine went toward the numerous Plymouth Furys that were used in the film.

In Escape From New York, the scene where Snake PIissken (Kurt Russell) is flying over the city looking through special "VR/Night Vision", that effect was created using a large model table comprising of spray painted styrofoam rectangles posing as buildings with their corners and edges covered in 3M Scotchlite tape. The effect was made by a young Hollywood newcomer named.. James Cameron.

Just one week after I bought my first car ('84 Ford Escort) my neighbor put his good-running '58 Plymouth Belvedere up for sale for $100 less than I had just paid. There was no way I could have known, it would have cost a fortune to maintain, but I have never regretted anything so much as that missed opportunity

Just watched this video for the first time. I actually recommended Christine at the start of October. The car Christine is a 1958 Plymouth Fury, chosen by Steven King as it was a Forgotten car at the time. In the 1950s, the Chevrolet Bel Air and Big finned Cadillacs ruled the roads and the Plymouth Fury was only available in the gold and white trim. Christine is the only one painted in 'Autumn Red' and white because she was considered a 'Special Order' by Rolan LeBay. 24 Plymouth Furys were used for the film and only 2 Survived and are in private collections to this day. Oh, and the scene where Christine "repairs" herself was done with hydraulics to suck to the car into itself and the footage was just played in reverse.

Keith Gordon who played Arnie is an amazing actor, who went on to do some really phenomenal directing later in his life. Genuinely one of the coolest people in Hollywood.
He also appeared in Dressed to Kill and Jaws 2 around this time. He was kind of like PJ Soles, who you'd see in everything for a short time and who then kind of faded from view.

The guy that played George Lebay, who sold Arnie the car, also played the old man that saves Kevin in Home Alone!
Little known fact, Alexandra Paul (who played Leigh) has a twin sister and decided to play a prank on Carpenter. In the scenes at the end when they fight Christine, they sneakily put her in the same clothes and had her sat in the bulldozer with Dennis, apparently Carpenter didn't notice at first but knew something was off until they came clean.
Alexandra walked up to Carpenter while filming that scene and asked "John, are you replacing me already?"
The kid who played Arnie directed a movie called The Chocolate War and I was an extra in the film - literally a face in the crowd - and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and as the camera zoomed in on one of the main characters I am right there! So with my family I got to see myself on the big screen in a theatre! I can see why actors can get so sucked in, seeing yourself on that huge screen and knowing a whole world of people are seeing you makes you feel unique and special even though it really means nothing at all. I felt that even as just a nobody in the crowd.
John Carpenter is mainly known for horror movies (which are among some of the best ever), but he also made a mainstream movie you would probably love, a sci-fi romance movie called Starman with Jeff Bridges (Big Lebowski) and Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark). It’s about an alien stranded on Earth that takes the form of a woman’s dead husband and she takes him across country to meet up with a rescue ship. It’s sort of an ET for grownups. You should definitely watch it.

John Carpenter is as memorable as a filmmaker as he is a composer. He writes his own music and Christine's theme is certainly one of his best. More rhythmic variations exist on RUclips and are really catchy and are a real homage to the sound of the 80s.

This is one of my favourite horror movies. And the good ones CAN be done without all of the blood and gore. Keith Gordon was absolutely fantastic as Arnie. He played BOTH roles to perfection. Cheers from Canada!

The book was so good. Dennis was the narrator of the first part the second part switches to third person. And then the third Dennis takes over the story again. The book is incredibly sad, and nostalgic. Especially as Arnie deteriorates. The book came out when I was in High School I loved it.

@@darthtrip7188 I guess that’s probably the difference between a King fan vs a non-fan. Admittedly, I’m no literary connoisseur-simple though they are, I did enjoy a couple of the Bachman books. Beyond that, though, I’ve never found much of his work to be remarkable. _Christine_ is the one standout exception, though. I’ve never understood why it resonated so deeply stood with me; it’s possible that it’s because I was 13 or 14 when I first read it, having already caught _most_ of the movie on cable _once._ It was right around this time that I had developed both an appreciation for classic cars _and_ a seething resentment for my peers and a number of other people in my daily life. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t interpret Arnie’s changing as a _decline,_ but rather as an _escape._
Beyond sentimentality, though, I also just recall the narrative "flow" of the book to be unique. Through the admittedly modest exposure I’ve had to King’s printed work (including as Bachman), I’ve never found others that measured up.
Incidentally, regarding the movie: it feels weird to say this, but even though I know Arnie is being corrupted (rather than possessed), I think that if ever I was to become the bad guy, that’s how I’d want it to go down.
If you're not a King fan I would recommend Different Seasons. I think its one of his best collections. Stand By Me and Shawshank. Both come from that books.

My sister's name is Kristine and in 1987, she married a man named Wayne, so I sent them got videos of "Christine" and "Wayne's World" for Christmas. They loved it.
Growing up (I was born in 77) there were three movies I could watch over and over and never get bored of watching. Christine, Halloween and Dawn Of The Dead (1978 version, obviously).

The movie is much different than the book. The movie completely misses the fraying of the lifelong friendship of Arnie and Dennis and the 'evil' of the car's genesis which is the never-ending fury of the original owner whose mother said a demon had played a trick on her and switched him out (changeling) as a baby. The death of the daughter in the car served as a sacrifice.

The idea of Arnie having a romance of sorts with Christine wouldn't play right in the movie if we thought it was possessed by the dead male owner. I would prefer if there was some explanation why it was possessed though, like by a woman who might've been murdered in it.
Yet another classic from John Carpenter, along with Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Escape From New York, Starman, and Big Trouble In Little China. This is one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel ever.

The book Christine was part of what you call the second phase of Stephen King's career as a writer. The first phase he wrote with a lot of literary ambition and published several heavyweight novels that are among the most frightening ever written, but also elevated horror fiction into the limelight. The second phase his books were a lot less "serious" and more fun, and spawned a number of campy, spooky classics like Cujo, Firestarter, and Christine.
The movie Christine revived John Carpenter's career as a filmmaker. Everybody from critics to studios to audiences hated him after The Thing, which was universally reviled. He was fired from jobs and more or less blacklisted. The only film he could get was Christine, so he took it. And, of course, critical evaluation of The Thing has shifted considerably in the intervening decades and it is now also considered a classic.
For what it's worth, Christine is one of the rare examples where the movie is better than the book. The book is much darker. It's also structured strangely, going from first person to third and back to first. The movie slims it down and simplifies things and makes it more fun.
The car is a 1958 Plymouth Fury (or Belvedere, which was a different trim level of the same car). Carpenter destroyed so many of them during production that there are very few left in existence. They're real collector's items among car and horror movie enthusiasts.

When this movie was made, video tapes were just starting to hit the scene, and the movie was set a few years before that. The first time I remember even hearing of a VCR was at a friend's birthday in 1983. The parents of probably the richest kid in school got one and we all saw it at his 12th birthday party. It was a sleepover, and his mom had rented a couple of movies from the brand new video rental store. Think we watched Rocky 3 about four times that night. They also had one of those Soda Stream machines (don't know if they were called that back then) where you can make your own carbonated beverages. Think I drank about 14 Pepsi's that night too. It was a few more years before many gas stations started installing security cameras. There were a few businesses that were early adopters of the technology, but it was probably closer to 1990 before they were in every gas station.
Awesome to hear. I remember in the early 80s, very few kids in primary school had VCRs. I didn't and I was probably a bit envious of the ones that did. The VCR seemed like the best thing ever. Yea they certainly weren't common back then. I remember being invited to someone's house and seeing Xanadu and Alien on video tape. It was probably about the mid 80s when we got our own VCR.
@@anzaeria I am pretty sure we got our VCR in 1984. Immediately started using it constantly to record stuff off TV and rent movies. We never had HBO, but that was how the "richer" kids were watching movies at home before that.
Christine is a 1958 Plymouth Fury. And is one of the most recreated movie cars next to the Delorean (Back To The Future) and the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am (Smokey And The Bandit). BTW... in case you were wondering where you've seen Dennis before, he was Cougar in Top Gun. He was the pilot in the beginning that turned in his wings. And also, Roseanne(?) is Kelly Preston, you know... John Travolta's wife.

One reason why I like It, is that it's So Different from the book.
They can actually be taken as two totally different versions of the same story, as A Lot was watered down or changed for the film.
The car repair scene was a one time filming, of a car being crushed and then played backwards.
Stephen King chose the car as it was never a popular model with the hot rodders, or custom guys, so they disappeared into obscurity.
They also cast unknown actors so no major names overshadowed the storyline, and this made the characters more relatable.
I was in high school when Christine came out. I really enjoyed it. John Carpenter is very good at building the suspense starting with a slow crawl, and hitting a crescendo later.
Not only is this a great Carpenter/King collab, but this movie also had Brett from Alien, Peter Venkman's test subject with the bubblegum he kept electrocuting in Ghostbusters, and Kevin McCallister's old neighbor from Home Alone.
Talk about a dream team!

Haha, I just saw this movie for the first time, and was staring at the Ghostbusters guy trying to tell if that's who it was. When he turned around in the car with his mouth gaped, that's when I was sure of it.
Christine was the first movie that my mother, brother, and sister worked on as extras. I dunno why I didn't get to work on it, too. but, of course, in my 40-plus years in the bidness, I never get to work on something cool or something I'd watch.
In high school the teacher said Friday we'll be watching 'Christine'. Awesome! Friday rolled around and she pops in 'Christy.' It's about a young teacher in early 1900s Tennessee...
I don't know why for even 1/2 a second I thought my 70 year old home economics teacher would be playing a badass horror movie. One of my dumber moments.
I once snuck in late to my creative writing class and saw "Write to Jesus" on the chalkboard. Had NO CLUE this Jesus (Hay-soos) was the 12 year old new class pen-pal in southern Mexico our teacher had just talked about. Found out from a former classmate who has taught there for 20+ years that old bat says "Don't pull a Daniel" to this day.

I remember an episode from Garfield and Friends where they did a spoof of this movie.
The car had an actual voice and stalked John around in a hilarious manner. I'd suggest watching that episode on your own time, gives a good giggle and it's called "Rolling Romance".

This is one of my favourite Stephen King stories, love the idea of a possessed car, love the idea of the milometer going backwards.
Once got a call from my insurance company saying I was reported for causing a crash.
But I was at work all that day with the car in our compound , the guys at work started calling my car Christine . Who's a good car ,who's a pretty car yes you are. I'm not taking any chances.
Why does it go backwards? I couldn't figure out what that meant.

The guy who played Dennis also played Cougar in the first Top Gun film (the character that has the panic attack in the air). The girl who likes Dennis and gets ignored by him, Roseanne, is played by Kelly Preston.
And the girl who plays Leigh went on to star in Baywatch. She also has a twin sister who switched out with her during Christine as a prank and ended up seen in part of the movie, but not her face.

Christine was a 1958 Plymouth Fury (Though some Belvederes were used) She came with a 5.7 liter, 350 Cubic Inch Golden Commando, with 305 hp two 4-barrel carburetors. Extra fact. The Plymouth Fury did not come in red. She only came in one colour (not including trim), beige.
Yes, the line of cars in the factory were the one color. The book indicated that LeBay special ordered the red paint job.
@@gail11 Its very hard to order a special colour for a car that has limited options. This usually only happens if one of the factory big wigs wants one custom for themselves, or someone really close to them orders it through them.

I saw a Chevrolet Camaro that was special ordered from the factory in "plum crazy" which was a Dodge color. The factory actually went and got some of the Dodge color and painted the Chevy and the color identification tag under the hood said "other" Two tone colors were very popular back in the day, and you could have the paint job done in special schemes. I don't think these custom paint jobs are really possible now, and I don't even know if you can custom order anything on a car now. But way back when a LOT of people ordered car instead of buying them already made of of the lot.

I had totally forgotten that Kelly Preston was in this. Fun, but so sad she’s gone. Obviously this a Stephen King story that requires extreme suspension of disbelief, but John Carpenter was the right man for the job. A stylish and entertaining thriller despite being absolutely ridiculous. Dennis is indeed, a good, good friend. 😊
I always liked this movie. Great script, memorable characters, good performances by everyone, and of course Carpenter's always going to deliver.

i highly recommend the book. the eerie atmosphere, the horror of it really comes alive in the book. In the book the last time Dennis and Arnie ride together in the car especially is really creepy because the whole appearance of the surroundings changed, Arnie changed, there hung a terrible smell of decay. Its masterly written.
This film is supposed to have taken place in 1978. To put car prices in perspective for you, you could buy a brand new Mustang in 1978 for $4,000 dollars, so $250 was a decent amount back then for a 20 year old used car that had been sitting in a yard collecting dust. Regarding the actors, oddly enough, Buddy was only 23 when this was filmed in April of 1983. John Stockwell, who played Dennis, and Keith Gordan, who played Arnie, were 22, so basically the same age. The hot girl, who played Leigh, Alexandra Paul, was later on Baywatch and on Melrose Place. Keith was also in Back to school with Rodney Dangerfield before becoming a director. You should put Back to School on one of your comedy polls.

In the novel you find out what's behind Christine's power as things start to escalate. I think I like how they made the car just plain evil by itself in the movie.
You must watch The Thing. It’s one of the greatest practical effect movies ever.
Definitely gotta get Carly in for that one.
It's also a lot smarter than people who haven't seen it expect it to be. Yes the practical effects are amazing, but I would argue that it's also the best exploration of paranoia and distrust ever on film.

“It felt fun, which is weird to say because it’s a bunch of people getting killed” I think most horror fans can relate to getting into the genre and having these thoughts at first. It’s often a misunderstood genre of movies where the audience can be confused for sadists or weirdos, but I always think about the roller coaster analogy: It’s a fun amusement park experience that many people love, but at the end of the day, it’s just an adrenaline rush because you’re tricking your body and your brain that you’re about to die.
Glad you liked the movie! Stephen King really knows how to write young characters coming of age.
I come for the character arc. Bubbly and happy, everyone and everything is so nice and it's all going to be butterflies and flowers, Then the reality sets in.
The guy that played Dennis, was also Cougar in Top Gun.
And Andy from Shawshank was Merlin who took Goose's spot in the final battle scene.
I honestly thought Dennis' actor would blow up more than he did.

This is a great John Carpenter/Stephen King combo. Great Carpenter film score.
Read this book when I was a kid, it ended differently. Artie lives after Christine is destroyed, but then he and his mom go on a road trip and get killed in an accident. A truck driver who witnessed the accident swore that he clearly saw an older man in the car fighting with Arties mom for the steering wheel, but no such person was in the wreckage or anywhere. It was a genius ending I thought. The man in the car was supposedly the ghost of the guy who owned Christine before Artie.
Arnie's character had more of a transformation as well. The movie is good but if you read the book it's a little bit of a letdown. Believe it or not I think this movie could be remade closer to the book with today's film making.

As it was one of the first movies I remember watching as a child on H.B.O., it'll always have some nostalgia. I read the book once in 2009, and again this year when I heard of a BlumHouse remake happening.
If they stay true to the novel, and do a light touch of John Carpenters vision, this could be an ABSOLUTELY CLEAN remake down for us horror nuts

Hollywood frequent changes plots when they turn books into movies. For Fried Green Tomatoes, they made Idge and Jessica Tandy's character the Same person.
Never thought to notice that the place where Moochie is dropped off hitchhiking seems like anything but a residential neighborhood, more like a warehouse or industrial district.

One of my favorite movies ever. We saw it in the theater when I was 9 years old, and there's not many movies that I have seen more.
It's a 1958 Plymouth Fury. Arnie's best friend drives a 1968 Dodge Charger. Not important for the story, unless you're a car person that loves horror movies!
1968 Dodge Charger is the car used as The General Lee in The Dukes Of Hazzard.

The character arcs are so good I such a short horror movie, really great. Carpenter makes all his own music too so that might be why it reminds you of Halloween.

There have been a lot of killer car movies throughout the years. First one that I can remember was "The Car"(1977) starring James Brolin.(more of a possessed car movie, like Christine.) Duel(1971) directed by Steven Spielberg, a man being pursued and terrorized by the malevolent driver on the road. Or the B-movie called The Wraith(1986), starring Charlie Sheen, where a special car and it's driver go after a gang of bad guys.
