    Stay cool, keep control, there's no magic solution, I think you must combine different strategies, surprised them, do unexpected things. One thing it works for me, I do when it's a rainy or windy day and kids have are out of control, yelling, running around... I start having a conversation with the blackboard, or a table, a chair. Then you wait for the click, for that student that spots what's going on and says to another one, is he talking to the blackboard ? And then, in few seconds all pupils are looking at you and listening to the conversation, then I finish with the board, saying , thanks for listening to me, nice chat, take care, and I get back with the students. Real story, it works for me !

      @etacude  4 года назад +37

      That's a great tip Al! I do something similar sometimes where I would start chatting to the students closest to me about anything interesting. The rest of the class usually quiets down to listen in. 😄

    I turn off a light usually during group activities. But, I also refuse to raise my voice with students. I find that turning off a light is effective during group speaking games, because the noise level is loud and their attention is on each other. Students usually quiet down in a few seconds and then I make my announcement.
    I think there are 3 reasons it works. First, it works because that is an expectation that they have when they do group activities. Second, it works because I'm not doing it out of frustration or anger. It is the plan. Lastly, I don't raise my voice, I don't speak when students are speaking. My students know that to hear me they need to quiet down.

    • @etacude
      @etacude  4 года назад +6

      Excellent point Julie. Switching off the light is a tool but not done out of spite. You stay in control and get the students' attention. Thank you for sharing!!

  • @planforfunESL

    I have noticed that the silence treatment works with teenagers and raising your voice works better with very young learners. I send students out in isolation with a worksheet so they cannot play or talk with their classmates but they still have to do the work. I warn them that is going to happen though.

    I've observed a lot of teachers and I've seen a variety in action. I've noticed teachers who are overly strict, uptight, or otherwise yell the most are the ones who have the worst-behaved classes. Especially when the students learn the teacher is all bark and no bite. Kids will see through that in a heartbeat.

    • @etacude
      @etacude  3 года назад +2

      Kids do have a 6th sense about sniffing out teacher who might be faking it. Being in control and offering a valuable learning experience is important, but it shouldn't be interpreted as being overly strict for no reason. On the other hand it's also necessary to set firm boundaries with students.

    You are helping us so much thank you a lot for your advice! My first day of teaching kids younger than 9 years old was such a disaster i had totally lost the control .They were fighting, shouting and one of them was denying for fun anything I was trying to say
    or others were standing up to go out of the class. Also, there was a girl who couldn't stand that mess that she was trying to help me to take back the control of the class by saying to me which kids were noisy and by giving me the bottle of water which belonged to another girl that was making noise with it . Instead of doing these tricks I was trying all the time to separate the kids who were fighting for fun each other and to raise my voice but the situation was a mess and I remember I was ready many times to cry and I believe that kids, when they were looking at me that day, they were thinking " such a desperate teacher who cant control her own class".

      We use our voices so very much and I've been working to speak less. I have Pavlov style taught my students to stop and look at me with the bell sound 🛎 one tap and most stop. The other students start to notice the level has lowered in the room. If not another tap 🛎 and PROXIMITY IS KEY so I move closer to students still talking. I also may use call and response. The bell is no gimmick to me. This video insulted a couple of my very successful ways to gain and keep attention from the class. But there were good points as well.

    Great advice, thank you. But sometimes there's one or two students who are forced to study English, for example, by their parents (I'm not talking about school classes, but supplementary courses) and nothing can interest them- I provide them with games, songs, crosswords, fun pair and group activities and they can still remain uninterested and distracted. What can we do to raise the effectiveness of work with such students?

      How can you teach somebody who isn't there of their own free will, and just doesn't want to know?
      After you've tried everything, try something different. Get them to 'bring and show' their favourite object from home (as long as it's not a pet) and tell you about it. Ask their favourite song in English and go through and explain the lyrics. Find out from their parent what their favourite pastimes and interests are (the child won't always tell you) and base a lesson around that subject.

    I keep telling myself that I won't shout no matter what, but once I am in the class with 22 kids , kept in a classroom from 9 to 4:40, moving around, shouting, going about their business, not doing the activity, I lose my temper and I start shouting literally on top of my lungs. I have tried it all, I have gone through rules and procedures, we have modelled it multiple times we have talked about right choices. The 123 eyes on me hocus pocus everybody focus ears engaged mouth locked... transition songs .... All this work only for few seconds and then they go back to making noise ; not finishing up work and running in the classroom. This is my first year as a first grade teacher and I am about to resign just because I can't manage the class and I have stopped liking going to work, I even started hating it. I have lost the battle.

      Imane, I'm so sorry that you're going through such a difficult time.
      Myself and thousands of other teachers know exactly what you are going through.
      With very little support and resources you've been placed in charge of difficult students. We've all been in that situation where you are trying to teach a class that is out of control. ~ There is no discipline and the students are running wild.
      You have tried everything but it feels like a temporary bandaid, making you dread going to school each day.
      The truth is that you need more experience dealing with kids and that this group is out of control. You are hoping to restart with a better group students cause these are far too gone.
      I understand if you want to quit. Perhaps don't quit teaching, but find a better school where discipline is better and you receive the support you need. Try not to quite teaching as a whole if that is what you made your mind up to do.
      However, if you want to persevere and push through I can give some advice bit know that it will be tough. Soon I will start creating a Classroom Management Course to help teachers around the world, because I see a need for it. But I'll need time to complete it. In the mean time, if you want to improve and continue, you'll need to prepare for a difficult, but character-building experience.
      You need a "hard-reset". A new you has to come in the class. This week you need to write an action plan. Write down the problems you have as well as procedures the kids need to follow step by step. If they don't follow the rules, what punishments will you use. Write all of these down and make a classroom management plan. You say you have one already, fine tune it to work. Make sure to write down the setup and sequencing of your class ~ What activities and games can they expect and what behavior do you want to see.
      Write this action plan down, then share it with colleagues and your head teacher. Ask them what they think. Then, send these rules home to the parents. When the kids come to class, go through it with them and explain it tjoroughly. The parents should sign off on it. From now on you will strictly enforce the rules.
      I hope this helps. There is much I want to say but it's too much to type.
      God bless and good luck!

      @@etacude Hello Eric, thanks for trying to help. I have about 7 years of experience as a French teacher in high school , this is the first time I teach Primary and that, to kids who do not understand the language of instruction. I was silly thinking that primary would be way easier to teach and that it would require less amount of work! I appreciate the idea of engaging the parents to re explain the classroom rules again at home. It might work!! The only issue is again the language of instruction that the parents don't speak. If it does work , I will let you know ☺️

    great stuff! But what is your advice if you have a class of kids of various ages (5-9) in which a few have either learning differences like dyslexia and so can get very frustrated or ADHD which again can affect them in many different ways. I have tried to separate them by age at least, the school won't agree to it. So with the ADHD ones I find that the only thing that does work on their bad days when they absolutely cannot focus or be still is to get them to help me, hand out papers, pencils, wipe the board, etc....I do my best to adapt to every different need they have but it can be extremely difficult sometimes and even more difficult to use a classroom management technique that works for all of them. Any thoughts are highly appreciated! All the best from France!

      I also according to this video, "give away my power" to "troublemaker" students by allowing them to do jobs. The thing that's different is it has worked much more than 1 or 2 times, and if the other kids resent me... They have yet to show it. When kids have disability, trauma or terrible parenting at home, it can cause them to act as "trouble makers" so I try to take that into consideration when giving them more choice and control over their life. I also teach STEM to each class in the school k-5 so I have the luxury of being able to allow this perhaps due to seeing each class only 50 minutes a week.

    Ergonomics are a big issue for me so I'm already behind the eight ball i.e. kindy desks for teenagers PLUS hassles with getting class resources e.g. printing, as well as extremes in English language competencies, raging hormones, mid-late afternoon classes = lagging energies, students who just don't even want to be there with an "I don't need to learn English anyway" attitude, all of which is a recipe for rowdy-heads. I'm assertive, don't shout as I use a mouth speaker, and I send students outside without hesitation as I won't engage in their shenanigans since there's 25 students that are patiently waiting for their studies. I often call in the specially dedicated 'go to man' to take over unruly students in their language! Turns out those same students are perennial squawkers and disruptors in all other classes. It only takes a few bad eggs to spoil it for the rest.

    Sir, today I made a mistake in copy correction. I teach maths. There was a division sum the answer should be 603 as quotient but the child has written 63 and missed 0 . It was my mistake I saw the statement for that word problem and sent a correction mark ✔️✔️ and the parent called me and scolded me for that mistake and told me that he should complain to my principal about this. I apologized sincerely for my mistake and he said it's fine. But I am feeling extremely guilty and scared about this. I am in my first year of teaching.
    Please sir suggest me what I can do about this...

    • @etacude
      @etacude  3 года назад +7

      Dear Hayley,
      Mistakes happen, we are human. I don't care about the parent - they must be a very sour human being if they cannot forgive a teacher who made a small mistake.
      You apologized sincerely ~ That is all you can do... nothing more.
      Worrying about it won't do any good. Let it go.
      If I can teach you one thing that all my experience has taught me... is that life goes on. Whether you worry or not.
      Free yourself from worry, focus on your job and enjoy the work you do and students under your care.
      Enjoy life, forgive yourself and be strong.There will always be negative parents, but only one you.
