My neighbor mounted a surf board up in tree branches where his goat loved to hang out. It was next to the road, and as you drove by it wasn't unusual to see a goat on the surf board up in the air. The locals were used to seeing him, but it did take the tourists by surprise. Your Fred is wonderful. I'd love to have him.
So cool! Makes me SO "farmsick" for my old horse farm. We had a horse farm for a few years...with all the barnyard animals. The donkeys and goats were big favorites, of course. So playful, emotional, and sweet. Smart, too. Wife/daughter got tired of the farm life, and we had to move back to the city. But...the farm life was my bliss.
The genetic memory of goat climbing is amazing. They would be happy on any crags throughout the world no matter how many millennia of domestication. And the donkey gets a free back massage : )
Just had this video come across my feed. What a lovely, sweet and fun video. Hope you have shared a lot more of this of thing. So needed in these days. Animal therapy is such a great healer. I did not know there were such large donkeys. He is the size of a mule but probably with a sweeter temperament.....as you have captured here. What seems to be a common thread in donkeys is their affection for their herd and their people. So humbling to have the love and trust of an animal. Relationship with animals always make me feel closer to God.
Fred was a 'problem' donkey because he didn't receive much attention and didn't have other company where his previous owners kept him, plus he was very aggressive with her goats. I purchased him for only $500 because the owner (a widow) couldn't take care of him any longer. As soon as I got him home from a 2hr road-trip, he immediately took a liking to Jenny, our female standard donkey. He couldn't have been happier! They ran around the big pastures chasing one another for hours, playing and frolicking. He's been a real pleasure to have on our farm, keeping everyone safe from the predators. We will always love and cherish Fred!
This was so much fun thank you. I'm so glad you had NO MUSIC. we can play music anytime but see those kids n donkey once in lifetime. And country sound of joy is great.
Fred is very similar to my Handy. Mine's about 900 lb and has the same coloring. I ride Handy a lot. He's a wonderful companion, so willing and tame and tolerant. I can put a guest rider on him anytime and he's glad to meet the new person. This is a great video with the goats and you having fun! 👏
Fred is still doing his duties, guarding the dams and doelings. Most every doe is preggo now by 'White Knight'. We have a coyote roaming around the chicken yard and the does' night pen at night, so we do some patrols after dark to keep the rascal from doing any damage. Fred will undoubtedly keep the goats safe and secure just as he has always done. He does his job very well. Every morning he greets me and wants my first attentions before the goats get theirs'. He likes to be rubbed just in front of his ears, and have his eye 'sleepers' picked out of his eyes. He likes to lip my hair as I'm petting and checking the girls. Then he grabs my jacket in an attempt to get more attention for himself. Good ol' gentle Fred!
Would love to have our Mammoth Donkey - Gypsy - meet Fred. She has the same personality. But she is the leader to one mini jack, 2 calves and a heifer and steer. Nothing gets past her.
You sound kind and relaxed with them. Such great way to release the stress, especially in this modern era where most of our communication or interaction takes place virtually. I live in downtown and there are only seagulls amidst who occasionally steal your fries. 🙁
Hi Kitty. All our animals, donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens and cats enjoy us talking to them in calm and relaxed tones (especially each other!). It soothes and relaxes them and lets them understand that everything is ok in their little world. Try as we may, we are not considered part of their herds. So when we enter the pastures or areas that they are being kept, sometimes the male animals become a little apprehensive, especially the full grown bucks (they are very protective of the younger bucks and does when a perceived danger is present) So, a slower, calm, easy demeanor and soft voice let's them understand that we are their friends. Most of them love to be gently stroked on their cheeks.... it is what they do when they greet one another, so it is another good way of calming an animal. When visitors come to see the animals, it is always a struggle for them to slow their movements down slow enough to keep the animals from becoming apprehensive of them. Especially children. A person has to have two speeds while working on a farm: FAST (but careful) for getting the heavy work done, and SLOW and GENTLE for talking and working with the animals. Watching happy animals can provide good lessons for happy relationships. Never pass up an opportunity to greet one another in a joyful manner. :) Thanks for commenting, Kitty!
I agree. In a present era, where people hardly greet each other on the public commute, or places -- let alone knowing and learning how to approach and befriend an animal. If it isn't a small dog or cat, they just don't want to understand them. Sad. I wish i lived on a farm surrounded with animals. I could be their Snow White singing beautiful songs to them... :)
Playground "equipment" for baby goats. It's "dangerous" in that watching them could become "addictive", they're so very funny and cute, all of them. Love, love, especially the very placid donkey "Fred". Thank you for sharing this video. :)
We decided to keep the mostly-white buckling ('White Knight') for donating his excellent genes to the herd. He now is at least 240 lbs and is a real ladies' man (buck). Handsome as the mountains. Just about as big, too. His horns span about 5 feet wide, tip to tip. All the other buckling from this year (2015) were sold to other goat herds needing good sires. So they are having the times of their lives having their way with the ladies. We still have some bucklings from last year that need good homes. They're getting big (and horny!), too! You know how crazy bucks get around this time of year, right? RUT SEASON! It's not just for deer, ya know.
When you were talking about them sounded just like little children trying to do it too lol. That Donkey Fred is beautiful. The red with white eyes he is beautiful. K
Fred us huge. He’s so calm. He looks when one falls off as if to say what happened little buddy. He’s just letting them climb all over him. I imagine this is a daily thing
Sweet! Think it would be good to not leave halter on cuz if he scratches his head his hoof could get stuck..that usually doesn't work out well.what a great donkey, and cute kids..
Mountain Goats without a mountain to climb, "Hey this Mammoth Donkey looks good"! Funny video thanks for sharing the laughs. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith
So beautiful so sweet great video I love baby, sweet,goat's, and,Fred. Is.so.good,is,he,sleeping, HA,HA, THIS,IS,THE,BEST,GREAY.JOB.LOVE,YOU,FRED,HA,HA,LOVE,YOU,GOAT'S, please, send.more, i.can.watch.this.all.nights, let.,me,live,there, ha😁😎😉😄😎😍😚😁💙💙💙
Bosses have to get impatient so that stuff gets done, and so their bosses don't get too impatient with them. :( Working for impatient people is double un-fun. Yeah, we now have 15 of these little rascals (kids), all between 3 to 6 weeks old, running around, causing all sorts of crazy, wonderful moments. They organize impromptu races around their sheds, all of them running and chasing after one another. Playing, jumping, running about... it's just amazing! Initially, their freshener mothers were beside themselves with worry that their kids would get lost, but now they've grown accustomed to the kids' shenanigans. So funny to watch! Goat TV! I'll have to try to catch them in action on vid and post it here.
Who needs tranquillizers, when there are such calming videos.
Thank you for sharing this.

There is a certain wisdom in Fred which makes him so precious and endearing...i wish i could have Fred....

That's the largest donkey I've ever seen - and so patient.
He’s so loving with those little ones.
It's amazing how goats are able to balance on hooves like a ballerina and navigate the most precarious crags , nooks and such
Awww he IS such a good boy!
This was so much fun thank you. I'm so glad you had NO MUSIC. we can play music anytime but see those kids n donkey once in lifetime. And country sound of joy is great.

The donkey probably thinks he’s getting a massage
Mules and mamoth jacks, while stong, spend a lot of time in energy saver mode.
Would love to have our Mammoth Donkey - Gypsy - meet Fred. She has the same personality. But she is the leader to one mini jack, 2 calves and a heifer and steer. Nothing gets past her.
This is a precious video. Thanks for sharing.

How do you get any work done? Good stuff. My boss is named Fred but he is not so patient.
