What intrigues me is how this will impact the Russo-Ukrainian war. Russia invested a lot of money (at the request of Assad) to protect Assad in order to protect their vital naval facility in Tartus. Now that Russia is stuck in a stalemate with Ukraine, Russia will have less resources to protect their interests in Syria. They'll either have to abandon Assad, or invest their Ukrainian resources into Syria.
You also forget Hezbollah and Iran basically did Assads dirty work on the ground while Russia was in the sky Israel removed Hezbollah and Iran from the picture
When Armenia was invaded by Azerbaijan in 2020 Russia was obligated to help them militarily because they were both part of the CSTO (Russia's version of NATO), but Russia did absolutely nothing because they were preoccupied in Ukraine. I wouldn't be surprised if Russia leaves Assad by the wayside just like he did with Armenia.
@@Dorgpoop I don't think that's a fair equivalence. Armenia (and by extension the CSTO) has little strategic value to Russia, since it's pretty clear that Russia may plan to retake the former Soviet states to incorporate them into Russia. The Tartus naval facility, however, is very important to Russia from a strategic perspective , as it's the only naval facility that connects the Russia Navy to the Mediterranean Sea.

Oh well... that's life in a nutshell. Sometimes you're on top of the wheel, most of the times you're at the bottom; you win some, you lose some. That's all I've got to say about that.
The problem for Assad is that the rebels grow with growing territorial population, because they are much more popular than the government, while the government can only grow with taxes and foreign support. So, if Assad doesn't get foreign support, he might lose his power, and the more lands he loses, the more accelerated rebels growth gets.
@@julianshepherd2038 arguably, yes, I assume. But I believe they get indirect supports, like, for example, the turkish government gives some of its secret agents weapons, those secret agents also work for the rebels and they give them the weapons as if they were from their personal arms stocks and th rebels accept it as weapons given by an ally or a member, the lower rank individuals not knowing it came from a foreign government. This is hypothetical, but this is how I imagine foreign fores helping the rebels. OBVIOUSLY, the rebels don't have anyone to give them air support, like assad does. The russian forces airstriked the rebels for years and days before now, and they even got intense airstrikes today morning. Therefore, they don't get much foreign support like Assad gets.
People were literally protesting against rebels ironically. They by any means are not popular. At this point every Syrian just wants the war to end and hates anyone prolonging it.
@christianbroadbent7489 After losing large parts of the Aleppo countryside, last night the city of Aleppo was peacefully surrendered and they withdrew completely. A curfew was imposed for civilians throughout the night and people are still in shock and not leaving their homes.

Their borders were designed by outsiders to be impossible to rule from within. There are so many disparate populations with these two nations that want nothing to do with one another. Balkanization would probably lead to much more stable nation states. Instead, foreign governments leverage and prop up internal groups to seize power and suppress the others. It is precisely because they are divided that foreign governments meddle, not the other way around.
Yes! Thank you for the animating the video. I have no clue what's going on and the visuals made it easier to understanding. Looking forward to updates.
This shows how biased the sample here is, assuming they're even Syrians. Meanwhile, you'll never hear from the vast majority of the real Syrians on the ground
As someone who was obsessed with learning everything I possibly could about the conflict in the 2012-2015 time frame, I genuinely appreciate how often this video said "it's complicated" and moved on to the next point. Frankly, I think this is as decent a summary as possible in only 8 minutes. The only point I would add is that large portions of the HTS coalition are either Islamist or even Salafi (but mostly not Salafi-Jihadist - except for the Al-Qaeda offshoot which is a part of HTS, but also hostile to ISIS). This is another reason why the US does not back HTS, but Türkiye does (not that Türkiye supports Al-Qaeda, but they do consider them less bad than the Kurdish PKK; also the more moderately Islamist ideology of other components of the coalition probably suits Erdoğan).
Great video, but small factual correction: Golan Heights are also part of Syrian territory. All the maps used and the explanation of control on 3:50 don’t mention this.
The southern Golan heights are in the control of Israel. When you report news you can't get biased about that, they must to show you the real map of the world.
Not Syrian myself, but my fiancée is. There's one key flaw in this video: the government only really controls the borders, Damascus and Latakia, not 60% of the territory. Most cities and groups essentially self-govern.
only true about, Dar'aa and Al-Suwayda Governorates, and Dier Azzour ( Which is held by the US for its rich oil fields, surprisingly this video does not show it on the map lol)
How is this possible? How is the Syrian military this weak? Why dont they understand that they just cant withdraw from the second largest city like cowards, retaking it is gonna be hell. This is like ISIS all over again.
Well two things First, this is the true ability of the syrian army without the iranian support on the ground and the russian aerial support Second, the rebels HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH isis .. they fought isis in the past plus they are pretty much welcomed in the city in contrary to isis .. most of these fighters are aleppines who were kicked out in 2016 by assad vicious campaign back then and they are just returning to their city and homes .. and that's why they are welcomed by the people
Every single middle eastern military is an absolute joke side from Israel. They are so incompetent and weak it is just mind blowing how they all think they are tough
My heart goes out to all Syrians their country has been turned into a battle ground for all these other players who don't care about them and constantly go around complaining about refugees
Q: Why is a ceasefire that was held for 4 years suddenly collapsed? A: The "rebels" (more like terrorists that used to be part of ISIS ) caught the scent of weakness and struck with precision.
America doesn’t have any legal or democratic mandate to be involved in this. We are here just to ensure we are constantly entangled in middle eastern conflicts.
You forgot to mention the most important reason for the success of this offensive which is the relative absence of Russian jets which made the difference in 2026 and allowed Assad to take control over Aleppo. Russia being preoccupied with its war against Ukrain, Hezbullah being nearly destroyed by Israel, this presented golden opportunity to the opposition to gain as much control as they can.

@@gregorymalchuk272 because assad is dictator. might be the worst one on par with kim jong un and netanyahu. he killed his own citizens who wanted to be free (to some degree) which fueled to Islamist uprising
Syrians don't like the government so they would never defend it. As for fleeing, people flee from the government, not from the rebels. All Syrian refugees around the world were running away from the government. Not just that, there are many people who smuggle themselves from government-controlled territory to rebel-controlled territory. The more territory the rebels capture the more the Syrians that go back to Syria.
Israel has a lot to do with Syrian civil war. Briefly, Syria is ally of Israel's arch enemy Iran. Also Hezbollah which is an armed shia faction in Lebanon which threatens Israel, supported by Iran through Syria. So a friendly regime to Iran in Syria is detrimental for Israel's security. So here is why for you. Just check out Israel's air raids in Syria. They are directly targeting Iran's proxies in Syria.
Because syrians view the rebels are liberators, most syrians are sunni while assad and iranian and lebanese militias as shia Assad and his allies did atrocious things to syrians, carpet bombings, mass rape campaigns and torturing in prisons he even used chemical weapons against them

Masy they are 100% extremists. Most of the group are the new younger generation of Syria. But some of the people who control it where apart of other terrorist organizations and killed many innocent civilians. This is a Fact not an opinion. They did say they won’t impose sharia law but I don’t know if I believe them
It's not a civil war if hundred countries are there fighting
its shameful that these sunni fundamentalists care so much of sunni revolution in syria that they would travel across the world but they do nothing about their brethren being slaughtered about gaza. It's why Israel has no issue providing medical aid to Al-Nusra fighters and prefer ISIS over Assad. These rebels are no threat to western imperialist powers. theyre just pawns and a joke. You'll never see these rebels travel to defend palestine
That’s basically what a civil war is. Everybody gets their hands dirty because the host country can’t control itself.
A hundred countries are there so that the civil war ends faster, they just can't agree on how to end it faster. If they don't do anything, more problems will spread to these hundred countries and more. It's not like the local government is doing anything, so others have to do it for them. Do you understand?
exactly. its not a civil war. its another front in the larger war between east and west. 24 hours after the cease fire isis and al quada funded and baked by turkey, the u.s and isreal started attacking the syrian government to distabilise supply routs that iran uses to supply weapons to the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine and iraq. also turkey and russia are having a dispute about the oil pipeline that runs through there as well. there are over 14 different facts in Syria fighting each other right now and no they arnt al on the same side. some are funded by turkey who are fighting isis who is funded and trained by the u.s and so on
That’s quite literally how a lot of civil wars are….
Music to our ears.. 🎵🎶
You also forget Hezbollah and Iran basically did Assads dirty work on the ground while Russia was in the sky Israel removed Hezbollah and Iran from the picture
Tartus is more symbolic. The russian navy is shrinking too.

The problem for Assad is that the rebels grow with growing territorial population, because they are much more popular than the government, while the government can only grow with taxes and foreign support. So, if Assad doesn't get foreign support, he might lose his power, and the more lands he loses, the more accelerated rebels growth gets.

This is hypothetical, but this is how I imagine foreign fores helping the rebels.

Fights will never stop until Syria and Iraq is divided into segments, which makes it easier to rule by outsiders.
