The song drags behind the beats to create such an ominous feel. The razor sharp guitar sounds coupled with the the atmospheric howl of the keys. So intense. Amazing writing and performance. One of the greatest songs ever recorded. Robert Johnson at the cross roads...Neil Young....Bob Dylan...Mozart...Beethoven. Nick FORCES his way into that arena. He cannot be denied. What an artist.
The beginning of the song makes me thing of a quiet, dark, closed down café in a city in the night, with neon lights shining in from the large glass windows illuminating a single person sitting alone at a table staring into nothingness. Then they exit the café and start walking down the street in the still night.
I like both, the 1 and the 2. the part 2 is like the "end of the party" atnosphere, like "the carnival is over", but we know, it'd be a dark carnival, a sad one, or broken, terrible, well, after the passion and the anger.
This song is great. The lyrics are a masterpiece. It reminds me alot of Dress Rehearsal Rag by Leonard Cohen though. Their voices sound so alike in these two songs!
I've always thought this is a comparison between the act of whoring oneself to the struggle as an artist/actor/musician. It's most certainly about selling oneself.
The song is actually about a boy who got sexually abused at the cinema. Its all in the lyrics: And the clock of my boyhood was wound down and stopped And my handsome little body oddly propped And my trousers right down to my ankles Yes, onward! And upward! And I'm off to find love Do you love me? If you do, I'm thankful Some say it's connected to the short story 'The Juniper Tree' by Peter Straub, I haven't read at this time so I can't say for sure. This is one of his darkest songs IMO.
Has Nick *himself* ever stated anywhere that this song is based off of 'The Juniper Tree' by Peter Straub? I'm unsure whether this information comes solely from hearsay... but would really love to know, as this is my favourite of Nick's songs. Thanks to anyone who replies.
it's a great ending to an amazing album, I'm highly critical when it comes to an album in its entirety, but Let Love In is a great force within itself, The Downward Spiral oddly enough was released within same year which was a great album in its entirety.I mean Fuck pour some burbon hit play and disapear for forty five mins,
See, i dont think its being sexually abused, i think its more about a young man's fist sexual experience. Being gay at the time when Nick wrote this song would have been seen as taboo, homosexuals were marginalised and would have sought love in secluded hidden places, away from judging eyes The setting of the theatre epitomises this sad isolation they would have felt. Clearly the young man seeking love in such a place from a stranger is the tragedy of the song, rather than the sexual act itself.

Absolutely stunning and horrific. This nasty song took me weeks to understand and it still makes me feel uncomfortable.
Thank you Nick, for the art.
@southerncoldwind it's called "cocaine"
@will221119912 Correct me if I'm wrong, but you won't get any of the effect of the juxtaposition if you don't listen to them together?
I actually prefer this one... but that may be because I've completely overplayed part 1.
