This song gets me to my soul. It is so hard to feel happy for someone as they are doing so well without you but you are not doing well at all, your life is falling apart in ways that go beyond your pain of missing and loving them and all you want to do is ring them up and have them say it is all ok but you can't. They are happy and have a life with someone else, that someone else has the life you should have and the family you never could give the one you love. Life fucking sucks. As someone who is young and has a shitty medical condition that shortens my life, do not push people away thinking you are doing them a favor saving them from the burden of you. Do not take their choice away to love you and stay because you are afraid they will leave you anyway or be hurt by the inevitable death. I wouldn't change anything about my life or my illnesses if I could just go back and let him love me.
I found this song trying to find if Nick Cave did a Christmas song and this popped up.... I remember smoking American Spirits Perique cigarettes at Starbucks listening to this on my mp3 player during Xmas time cuz at the time I didn't have a smartphone yet.... A very good song, probably the sister song to "Little Empty Boat"....
I have recently discovered this song thanks to this kind soul nvldctrn (thank you!). Each time I listen to it and the lyrics end, and the music continues as if it wants to convince us of the truth that the words just sung, I find myself longing for this truth and I wish the man behind the voice would come back and the music would never end...Alas!....the music ends, the man does not come back ....but what an experience I did have....I love you, Nick and the Bad Seeds

Should have been the album closer instead of Green Eyes -- an unnecessarily obscene and melodically banal song, the only flaw in the album. That way the album would have been truly unimpeachable.

This song gets me to my soul. It is so hard to feel happy for someone as they are doing so well without you but you are not doing well at all, your life is falling apart in ways that go beyond your pain of missing and loving them and all you want to do is ring them up and have them say it is all ok but you can't. They are happy and have a life with someone else, that someone else has the life you should have and the family you never could give the one you love. Life fucking sucks.
